“It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.” Gabriel Garcí a Márquez
Yelena was born in Almaty, the Republic of Kazakhstan (former USSR republic) and lived there until 1997, when she immigrated to the United States. Her interest in graphic arts became apparent when she began painting posters for her school using water-colors and gouache paints. After high school she participated in an exhibition of amateur works in the Academy of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. She was featured again in a personal exhibition at the Central Gallery of Almaty. At the time, her works were illustrative in nature and often seemed to unintentionally depict the people around her in the forms of creatures in vibrant places. After moving to the U.S. her works were displayed and sold at the Sloane Gallery of contemporary Russian Art in Denver, Colorado. Yelena produced few paintings in the decade after the migration, until she decided to seriously address her interest in painting by enrolling at Houston’s Glassel School of Art in 2007. Through her art she explores new techniques and experiments with applications of various media, such as gravel, sand, and gold leaf. Her paintings are acquiring a unique sense of depth and each one explores new means of creating intriguing visual effects and scenarios that capture the imagination and saturate the senses. Yelena’s art cannot be demystified through a scrupulous analysis as her characters and settings are products of raw and uncontrived emotion; they are born from a fluid and playful subconscious. Yelena shares with the world the intimate and intense instances of a mystical and poignant world inhabited by dream-like creatures. Her paintings are not larger than life to Yelena, distinctive and vibrant as they are, she views them as her natural works. This portfolio represents the paintings dating from 2009 until 2011. They derived from in-class studies and grew into their own creations; each one is a sample of ardor and a dedication to perfection.
