Barcelona Public Library is in the middle of courtyard of a historic site. Regardless of the site context, seven objects were picked to represent each part of architecture such as color, construction, form, glow (light), energy, surface, and space. These were fused altogether into one giant hairy massing where the spaghetti leges became the energy source of this building. It contained water and shoot to the top of the building, and as it fell through the complicated small columns within the massing, it turned built-in turbines to create energy. As the lower floors of the library public uses will experience uncanny and eerie spaces that is very tall and dense but empty at the same time. The Cantilever Academic Project | SCI-Arc | Instructor : Margaret Griffin | Sept-Dec 2018 In Collaboration with Gregory Khachatryan Program : Multipurpose High Rise Location : Los Angeles, California

The cantilever is a multipurpose high-rise located in the downtown Los Angeles. The massive cantilever acts as a gateway to downtown as it sits in the perimeter of downtown LA, between art district and downtown LA. It is positioned to look animated, which implies the activeness of downtown area, bringing more public engagement. The first three floors have commercial programs, the two towers and the bottom half of the cantilever part are offices, and the top nine floors are hotel. Cantilevered part of the massing is purposely positioned diagonally, facing northwest and southeast. This not only extends the perimeter of the downtown area, but also opens up and connects to the arts district area, enlarging the downtown Los Angeles.

The slit through the upper part of the massing is all in glass to bring more natural light into the center of the building. The various thickness of the brick patterned cladding brings various programs inside. Some part of the cladding is thick enough that it creates side apertures so that the users can look view outside but keeps privacy at the same time from adjacent buildings.

The Gateway Building

Lack of public space is one of many urban issues in Downtown Los Angeles. Many public spaces became not safe, or users started to question the saf Downtown is worse. By cantilevering majority of the massing, it created another semi-pubic area on the ground level, engaging public more to downtown awareness of homelessness to LA citizens and become an iconic landmark as well.

The Puzzle House is a single-family housing located in Bolye Heights, Los Angeles, CA. It contains total four units, where each house is interlocked under and over the adjacent units. Massing is formed by extruding a specific profile that is deviated from the precedent building, Burroughs Wellcome Building by Paul Rudolph. The combinate of these extrusions and harsh urbans cuts of the property line ended up creating various new profiles. The position of aperture and solid walls were decided on the 2d profile shape before the extrusion so that the extrusion already contained the materiality and thicknesses. For privacy, all the windows are in an angle, so that its only function is to bring natural light, but still preserve privacy. Each puzzle houses are united by two different grid systems to give units regularity and homogeneity. On the ground level, the shadows of houses make territory between the public sidewalk and the private property. The Puzzle House is composed to face back to outside, creating semi-interior courtyard space within houses for the residents.

Extrusion and Property Line As property lines and set back lines usually restricts the overall concept/design, integrating it as part of the design strategy was another way to treat it differently than before. The extrusion of a simple wall sections, where lines has pre-defined materials of either glass or solid wall, was also another way to treat a 2d profile of building differently. The combination of these two strategies of extruding and trimming the edges with the property line became an urban strategy in terms of a residential project, exaggerating the property line in massing rather than fitting a design within itself. The proposed monastery respects the existing ‘Baralha Fortress’ by building over it and spanning over the historic structure. The project presents a flow through a variety of zones within the building for solitude, incorporating the fortress plinth. Instead of meditating on one fixed space or in a still position, people will be able to contemplate within the movement through the flow of one space to another within the building, seeking for one’s true self. It also creates playful relationships between view and viewer using the literal and metaphorical use of the curtain as an architectural element. The curtains offer flexibility to create semi-interior spaces, which can be operated by users. The viewers will start the journey by following the existing trail to the ruins. Once they reach the entrance, they are welcomed by the framed view of the scenery in Cape Espichel. The trail will be extended into the monastery, continued by a shallow body of water that will cleanse them from the impurities (Image 3). This will take them to the stairs guiding from one level to another. In order to seek for their true self, they will have to look up and follow the light which will guide their next path (Image 4). The light directs them linearly through programs up to the roof (Image 5), where they will be emerged by the open scenery of Baralha Fortress as they conclude their journey.

Monte D’orio Wine Tasting Room - competition Academic Project | SCI-Arc | Instructor : John Enright | Feb 2020 In Collaboration with Malvin Wibowo

The Dancing Curtains proposes five towers at Arena Green Park West with heights ranging from 175 to 200 feet. Two of the five towers will be made out of sheer blue billowing fabric while the rest will be frozen drape-like precast concrete structure. The proposal invokes netzero energy design principles in the lighting design. Instead of creating an enclosure, the project establishes multiple relaxed, comfortable, and informal public spaces, where people can not only act and perform, but also take photos, sit, eat and lie down. Formally and materially, the proposal toggles back and forth between what is understood as real and fake curtain, soft and hard, light and heavy, smooth and rough. With the technological development in Silicon Valley, social media becomes an important standard of verification for a landmark. The proposal challenges the idea of a monument that is traditionally identified by its scale. Instead of its height, the project considers social media monumentality to define its landmark quality. As a critique to contemporary culture, the fame on social media assigns a new definition of monumentality. The physical scale does not matter, but its digital footprint on the internet afterward is the most important aspect for it to become an icon.
