Higham Races 2011

F

ine & Country in Essex and Norfolk are delighted to be sponsoring the Point-toPoint Series 2011 at Higham Races.

Higham Point-to-Point moved from Newton Green to its current site, one mile off the A12 between Ipswich and Colchester on the B1068, in 1957. For the first two years the course ran clockwise but there were so many accidents and falls that it was perceived as dangerous and, therefore, reversed. With the exception of Foot and Mouth in 2001, the point-to-point has run every year since. Over this time it has built up to four scheduled meetings per year, each with a minimum of six amateur races run over three miles and nineteen fences. The races are scheduled to cover all abilities of horses from young to old, novice to talented. The crowd get the ability to stand close to the action and experience the thrills and spills of a heated race.

In 1993 Desert Orchid was paraded and well-known racing figures such as Dick Saunders and the Sherwood Brothers have ridden there, who went on to train under rules. The Marquis of Bristol once landed in a helicopter in the middle of the course during a race and was fined by the then Clerk of the Course for doing so. A trip to the point-to-point is a fun day out for all the family with the added attractions of a bar, food vendors, numerous trade stands.
