HOW OFTEN DO YOU POST THINGS ON INSTAGRAM?

1 photo at least once a day. It is rare for me to have long stretches of time where I don't post/am inactive on Instagram.

20 LIKES Carlos + June, Live at The Whale (2/11/89)

WHAT KINDS OF SUBJECT MATTER DO YOU LIKE TO POST ON INSTAGRAM?

Everything from pop culture and music/film/TV references to my personal artwork and explorations of nostalgia, impermanence, and the human experience.

Chances Are I Wanted You

DID YOU USE ANY APPS TO EDIT YOUR PHOTO?

I used Instasize to edit and post the photo to Instagram. It’ll always be my “go-to” app, even though Instagram has started to phase out the grid/strictly square format method of displaying photos.

Take a picture that shows your passion or hobby HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TO SHOW IN YOUR PHOTO? WERE THERE ANY ELEMENTS/THINGS YOU DECIDED NOT TO SHOW?

This is a photo of my vinyl record collection that I have been working on packing up and bringing back to Baltimore from my hometown of Miami, FL. I decided to showcase typography and feature/create the phrase “Chances Are I Wanted You”. This reflects the underlying melancholy and explorations of desire that I tend to explore through posts on my account.

IF YOU EDITED YOUR PHOTO, WHAT EDITING PROCESS DID YOU GO THROUGH?

I made changes to the brightness and contrast of the photo.

I chose these objects and photo to further communicate my overall themes stated above and because I am extremely passionate about music and collecting vinyl records. I also have a huge interest in music packaging/promotional material, which is an area that I am planning to continue to explore for my thesis.

WHAT KINDS OF SUBJECT MATTER DO YOU LIKE TO POST ON INSTAGRAM?

I usually post about funny things I see on the street or my work that I’ve been making. Mostly I post pictures of things that I find intriguing - at galleries, art related things, friends doing weird stuff, occasionally dogs. I never post about food I eat or latte art stuff.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TO SHOW IN YOUR PHOTO? WERE THERE ANY ELEMENTS/THINGS YOU DECIDED NOT TO SHOW?

Take a picture of things that inspire you

I took a picture of engraved/ printed rocks I found at Michael’s, the craft store. I found them in a home decoration aisle, which I thought was so absurd and funny because it’s a kitsch object done with a high-tech tool! (stone engraving in Helvetica!) I find inspiration in weird things like this. I think humor always takes art to the next step, so I hashtagged it #rocktype and #stonedtype. My favorite is when there's an emoji that perfectly matches the subject matter in my photo. I use the sparkle emoji, rose emoji, fire emoji (to indicate something is “lit”), praying hands emoji the most.

DID YOU USE ANY APPS TO EDIT YOUR PHOTO?

No. But, I edit my photos on Instagram directly. I always do my same routinemake a photo brighter, sharper, cooler (warmth- I hate yellow/grainy photos).

SHARE SOME THOUGHT/DESIGN PROCESS BEHIND YOUR PHOTO. IF YOU EDITED YOUR PHOTO, WHAT EDITING PROCESS DID YOU GO THROUGH?

I am a #nofilter instagrammer. I mostly like my photos to be cooler (warmth wise, hopefully content wise too) and brighter.

SQUARE PEOPLE

14

I don’t really have a design process for it. I tend to place things in the center of the composition because Instagram used to require all photos to be in a square format. Now that users can post vertical or horizontal photos, I just try to cram a lot of things into one photo. I chose to take the picture at Michael’s because sometimes you find unexplored ideas in the hub of cliché!

IF YOU EDITED YOUR PHOTO, WHAT EDITING PROCESS DID YOU GO THROUGH?

Overall I have been editing my photos to look more washed out and bright. As for cropping, I crop out anything that will seem out of place in the photo. As for choosing which photo : I typically take a few of the same subject matter but I change the viewpoint of the camera to see which composition works the best and if the subject translates well to photo. Also I try to crop out the wrinkled napkins, straw wrapper, my legs... Things that will break the picturesque aesthetics.

I like to post things I observe in life, during the day when I notice a nice composition of shapes/colors/forms, I try to capture it through pictures. I only upload pictures of food if there is something unusual about it like colors, or decoration, or forms. I like to take pictures of things that are generally colorful, but I also had a phase of uploading things that were completely colorless -- cool grey and blue tones. Subjects don’t matter to me as much as how they come together as a whole in a square picture frame. I use Instagram as a documentation of the things I see. Sometimes I will upload personal events and happenings, but not often.

This picture was triggered by the fact that I was wearing all black, but they were each different textures. I liked that contrast so I wanted to capture it in one picture frame. I originally had my friend taking the picture for me, but it was a frustrating process where she could never fully understand my perspective on the final picture.

In this photo I chose to respond to the recent (sneaker as phone trend) and 1 up the game with the double phones. This release was especially hard to obtain, so while some collectors may have failed or only been able to purchase 1 of the 3 color variations that released - I display my success in acquiring 2 of 3.

No. I only used Instagram's filters.

Whatever looks visually pleasing and best fits in a square composition. Of course the main subject needs to be fully incorporated in (like a selfie, you want majority of the face, OOTD is primarily outfit + face, etc).

IF YOU DID EDIT YOUR PICTURE, WHAT EDITING PROCESS DID YOU GO THROUGH?

I didn’t realize I had a process until I started writing this down. I usually start off using a filter since it corrects color. I usually gravitate towards one of the 3 filters out of many in VSCO cam app (A1, B3, M5), increase the exposure, and crop the edited picture to a square format. Instagram changed its app to allow for different size format but I like something about the square format so I continue with it.

I chose a white plate and a cup since food shows well in contrast to white. You can see I cropped out a bit of the background (floor tiles) to frame the plating better. And plus, I like the square format like I mentioned before.

All the surrounding items and ingredients in the picture just came together as I was cooking. My mornings are usually pretty hectic and this kind of quiet ritual of making breakfast for myself is rare. I enjoyed making small decisions to get to this picture.. and I enjoyed my sandwich afterwards.

DID YOU USE ANY APPS TO EDIT YOUR PHOTO? IF SO, WHAT APP DID YOU USE AND WHY DO YOU PREFER USING THAT APP?

I just used the Instagram editing tools to edit my photos.

IF YOU DID EDIT YOUR PICTURE, WHAT EDITING PROCESS DID YOU GO THROUGH?

First I used the Lark filter, it's my go to. Then, depending on the picture, I go up on brightness and contrast. Sometimes, I would adjust the warmth of the photo if I took it in a yellow lighting situation. I don't really like my photos to be warm if it's indoor. I only use warmth when it's for an outdoor photo. The color function I use sometimes. If I don't like the tone of the picture, I would change it, but only slightly. I always move the bar for color below 10. If the highlight and shadow needs a little bit of tweaking I also do that, but again, it's only for subtle changes. After all the color corrections and editing, I then up the sharpen to ~80-90, and that's the end of my process.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TO SHOW IN YOUR PHOTO? WERE THERE ANY ELEMENTS/THINGS YOU DECIDED NOT TO SHOW?

Yeah. I moved a lot of things out of the frame. Things like scrap paper or random pens that were just lying around, I moved it out. I wanted the photo to be just about the plants. I also made sure that the colors were balanced in the composition.

SHARE SOME THOUGHT/DESIGN PROCESS BEHIND YOUR PICTURE.

SQUARE PEOPLE

I knew that I wanted my plants to stand out, so I positioned it in the 3rd right of the photo (using the Golden Ratio, a default). I added in the black Nespresso tube and my black laptop fan to, mainly, create a frame that highlights the lighter colored plants, but also to give more contrasts from the table and to give the photo some visual weight.

Nothing like the warmth and welcome of your own bed. My happy place.

DID YOU USE ANY APPS TO EDIT YOUR PHOTO?

I always use VSCO cam. It's easily understandable and I feel as though the filters are not too harsh and overbearing. The app itself is well designed too, so it helps with the editing process. HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TO SHOW IN YOUR PHOTO? WERE THERE ANY ELEMENTS/THINGS YOU DECIDED NOT TO SHOW?

I like filling the whole picture frame as much as I can, even though it is an up close shot. I didn't want to show all of my room because it is such a personal space. I consider my bed a place that makes me very happy, so I just decided to show small parts of it (like my blanket and pillows). IF YOU EDITED YOUR PHOTO, WHAT EDITING PROCESS DID YOU GO THROUGH?

I usually just stick with one filter. I like filters that accentuate whites and blacks, specifically. Other than that, I try not to mess too much with the photo, since I think it messes with the integrity of the content.

I guess I just want to advertise my world through my eyes. When I first joined Instagram, I had no intention of letting anyone know I had Instagram. Honestly, I tried really hard not take a shot that included colorful leaves, since that’s what everyone takes. But I realized that that’s why I love the fall. If it weren’t for the turning leaves, spring would be my favorite season. I love cool weather, especially after a sweltering, hellish East coast summer. Having grown up by the beach in the West coast, I’m used to 50-70 degree weather everyday all year round. And the Fall reminds me of those cold, California mornings going to school.

IF YOU EDITED YOUR PHOTO, WHAT EDITING PROCESS DID YOU GO THROUGH?

HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT TO SHOW IN YOUR PHOTO? WERE THERE ANY ELEMENTS/THINGS YOU DECIDED NOT TO SHOW?

I didn’t use editing on Instagrams app because it changes the previews color corrections I did. For this image I used a quasi monte carlo global illumination preset with ambient occlusion on an HDRI GSG light kit studio pro setup. Edited in photoshop with gaussian blur, motion blur, high passes and curve adjustment layers. Then color corrected in light room and exported as jpg.

I usually think of a design piece that I thought was cool from the images previously created in my work. This one in particular spoke to me after using it on the games site and since it wont make it onto the final chosen banners I thought id still posted for fun. The entire scene is cropped out, this is a mere glimpse of the scene, I look showing closeups because people miss out on a lot of detail I spent time on when looking at the entire scene rather than just a small caption.

This is a photo of Queen Victoria, the goddess of beauty who ruled the Kingdom on Lust in my game Relentless. Heres a glymps of the story behind her (Over the centuries, two of the immortal rulers—Victoria and Romane—lost their purpose for living and engaged only in pleasure. Krizched’s anger toward his siblings grew until he retreated deep into isolation, locked in his castle near the Dead Alleys of Rogunz. Eventually, Victoria and Romane—mired in hedonism—became desperate to regain control over their kingdoms and struck upon a solution in counsel with Krizched. Mankind would be created—in the image of gods—but with limited time on Earth, forcing each human to make the most out of his or her life.
