PROJECT OVERVIEW

abstract H

ostels had been labeled as cheap, unsafe, unsanitary, and so on for a long time. The hostel is a hotel format that allows travelers with limited budgets to share their culture and living habits with other like-minded travelers in a safe and clean space. Developing a new trend of a hostel to satisfy the high demand for budget hospitality by renovating an existing building will be my project. The two-stories existing building is located in North Beach, which is classified by the government as the northeast waterfront district. The total size of the building is around 36,000sqft and is certified as a LEED Gold building. In the past, this beautiful building was once the famous TV show, the indoor shooting scene of “The Street of San Francisco. The interior of the building still has the movie set ambiance at the time. Mien Yong Chan is the client of the project, and he decides to convert the interior of the building into a unique hostel. He names the hostel as The Mad hostel, so he requires a dramatic and fun interior design to match the name. He knew that the higher requirement of travelers but lower their budget in the new era. Also, The Mad Hostel will be managed with reasonably priced because most of the travelers have a limited budget. The safety, clean, and environmentally friendly will be one of the highlights in the hostel. There are six types of guest rooms, and they are divided between private hotel rooms and dorm-style rooms. There are some amenities and spaces not available in a traditional hostel, but in The Mad hostel are available. Therefore, he considers that an excellent fantastic hostel is needed in this beautiful place. Chapter 1 Project Overview

he client of this design project is a late 20s successful person who is Mien Yong Chan, and he runs two businesses. In 2015, he and his business partners founded Tripviss, which provides travel network platforms for travelers. In a short period, his company has become the most promising new internet operation company in Malaysia. After two years later, he started his second business, which was selling suitcases on the Internet. Therefore, he travels throughout different countries for business purposes. As the client frequently travels because of his work, the hostel has become his second home. He found that the hostel is one of the ways he expands his relationships and gains opportunities for business cooperation. Also, he realized that the young generation had a particular liking for the hostel, and he was no exception. In 2018, he decided to start his third business in San Francisco, USA, which is a unique hostel. The reason he picked the location is North Beach has gradually surrounded by those critical tourist attractions and the convenience of transportation in San Francisco. He believes that a new trend hostel should be more dynamic and creative, which makes the project exciting and challenging.

inspiration H

aving a good inspiration can be simple but also challenging. It can be researched from books to movies, from text to images. As long as it is a fairy tale related to the elements of “mad,” “fun,” and “childlike,” everyone usually thinks of “Alice in Wonderland.” Therefore, some of the scenes in the story became the primary source of inspiration for the project. Fascinating preliminary inspirations and design elements were inspired by the fairy tale, such as scale, upside down, and so on. It is an example that inspired by the story is the scaled version of Alice has entered a wonderfully perfect place. The place is filling with strange and unusual things, such as massive, talking flowers, flying rocking horses, intelligent blue caterpillars, and others. Thus, the space of the project needs to design with those elements. Also, the color in the animated movie is one of the main points of inspiration. The primary color of the characters in the story is bright tones, while gray tones dominate the background color of the scene. For example, the gray-toned background and dark green grass of the scene highlight the red heart queen and rabbit. The red queen wears a red, yellow, black, and orange skirt with a bright yellow crown on his head and a red-hearted scepter in his hand. The white rabbit in the animation scene wears red long-sleeved clothes and a white coat with red hearts with a yellow trumpet in his hand.

an Francisco is a city surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. Also, it has a prosperous economy, mature computer technology, and a variety of entertainment. In 1849, the San Francisco Bay was a key area of population growth as it provided a natural port. Besides, the Northeast Waterfront and Fisherman’s Wharf to the Chinese Basin were the critical areas for population growth at the time.

Unknown (Courtesy of a Private Collector)-

The ancient waterfront areas were both sailors and merchants, while residents enjoyed the most beautiful views of the port and the bay. Telegraph Hill was also the earliest settlement at the time, and the houses there today are expensive. From that time, the ferry building was opened and became an iconic building in the waterfront. After the removal of the Embarcadero Expressway, the public’s keen interest in the waterfront caused public transportation and improved measures in the area. Most of the empty warehouses and waste industries have also been converted to commercial or residential uses. The waterfront has gradually become the most important tourist attraction in San Francisco.

history of hostel

T

he early hostels are not as characteristic as the current hostels, nor are they as luxurious as the hotel. But because of the low price, it is barely one of the places to stay for travelers and backpackers with limited budgets. On the other hand, the new generation of hostels has become one of the premier accommodations for travelers of all ages due to their affordable price and unique service and space facilities.

Today, hostels are located all over the world, whether in the city center or the suburbs. In addition to the necessary facilities, the youth hostels in recent years have also begun to focus on space design and theme. Thus, the new advancement also leads the hostel to become more popular with travelers than star hotels and Airbnb. Chapter 2 Research

In 1909, when Richard Schirrmann led a student on a hike, he was forced to lay a bed in a school and had the concept of a youth hostel. In 1912, the first youth hostel was born in Altena, Germany, and it became the basic model of the youth hostel in the future. Although the interior facilities of the youth hostel are simple, they are sufficient to meet the most basic needs of travelers.

fter investigation, the most common choice is to change the age of the youth hostel from 20 years old to 20-30 years old. Early youth hostel users were mainly tour groups or backpackers, but in recent years they have become lovers or partners. The main reason is that most people choose to choose self-help travel, and travel agencies are gradually decreasing. San Francisco International Airport welcomed nearly 58 million visitors in 2018, and these foreign visitors spent almost $4.9 million in San Francisco. Passenger traffic and consumption increased gradually from 2013-2018. The top 5 markets for visitor volume were the United Kingdom, China, Canada, Mexico, and Germany. The fastest-growing markets were Brazil, France, India, and Taiwan. In 2018, San Francisco passenger traffic was 25.8 million, while overnight visitors accounted for 40 percentage, and day visitors accounted for 60 percentage. Overnight visitor stays in a hotel, hostel, Airbnb, or friends and family’s house, and most of the day visitors who travel to San Francisco are for business purposes. Total tourism spending includes visitor’s spending and conventions or meeting spending. This year’s total tourism spending in San Francisco a total of $10.3Billion. These data show that San Francisco still has a lot of room for development in the tourism industry. Chapter 2 Research

otel Not Hotel is a youth hostel with an art-filled living room design theme. Most of the communal spaces are vast and stylish. There are 23 rooms, which are surrounding a large gathering area. Every room has a different design style because they are all created by different designers.

How about a hidden bedroom? The entrance of each room is very characteristic, and the unknown bedroom behind the bookcase will be an excellent example. A mirror next to the door of the bedroom is a narrow window so that no one can look through the interior. What a creative idea for the part of the hidden bedroom? Bar Kevin Bacon is the best gathering area for their lovely traveler to share their incredible experience with a good drink. That is a pleasure for Bar Kevin Bacon to let their guests have meetings, reading, parties, and other activities during non-official opening hours. There are different sizes of dining areas for different sizes of groups. Chapter 2 Research

There is a seating area between each cottage to increase the chances of visitors chatting with the accommodation. For example, a blue-and-white tram cart, which is located beside Bar Kevin Bacon, was renovated into a semi-private sleeping unit. The tram cart with wooden floor, king-size bed, and old school lighting fixture create a retro atmosphere.

reehand Los Angeles is not only a fabulous hotel but also a luxury hostel. This hotel located in downtown Los Angeles, and it was housed in the 1920s- era old and historic building. After Killefer Flammang Architects revitalized the building, passersby can look into lobby, bar, and restaurant through the big beautiful window. Also, Freehand Los Angeles hotel has 167 guestrooms and 59 shared rooms, and the design duo Roman and William were chosen as the interior designer of places.

Roman and Williams designed the Exchange restaurant, and it led by Bar Lab. Because of the orange dining booth, the blue painted wall pop out strongly. However, significant natural wooden flooring and wood furniture create a balance between the color. There is a bar located in the hotel’s lobby, while the bottom of the bar counter is covered with red tiles, and the countertop is glossy finished wood material. On the other hand, a full wood cover pool bar is located on the hotel’s pool deck. Those bars could bring the best flavor for the guests and lead their holiday to the next level. Chapter 2 Research

There are solid wood made bunk beds with high-class mattresses in the shared rooms. Each shared place has a beautiful ensuite bathroom. Those bathrooms were decorated with small round green floor tiles and rectangular yellow wall tiles. On the other hand, private rooms are designed earthy but comfy. Unique woven carpets, colorful throw rugs, and fabric artwork create a cozy and organic feeling for those rooms.

There is an old but large elevator in the hostel for tenants to access each level of the building. When it stops, it will shake hard and make a big sound. Therefore, there is no elevator after 10 pm, and the stairs will be taken up and down the stairs. The reason for rules is to maintain the tranquility of the environment. The public space on the sixth floor with dry flowers and grasses, the chilly space becomes more cozy and fashionable. There is a seating area with sockets and a big table that allows a group of guests to share the day and night. Chapter 2 Research

Most of the lousy acoustic is from the Eastside. The building is having most of the daylight, especially after eleven am. The south of the building, which is facing Chestnut Street, has the best view. There are three parking lot near the site, which need to pay for parking. As everyone knows, summer marks the peak of tourism in San Francisco because most of the schools are on holiday and the tourists will plan a trip at that time. September to November marks as a sweet spot for the tourism of San Francisco because of fewer tourists and pleasant weather. Chapter 3 Analysis

ith a long and vibrant history, the San Francisco Bay Area has become the hottest attraction for travelers. From the era of the gold rush and transcontinental railways to ferries and cargo ships, from the construction and dismantling of interstate highways to high-level intermodal roads to the current space network, the Bay Area has been a party in the evolution of urban transportation history. Admittedly, the district’s transportation system is ideally linked to various areas, making it easy for locals and tourists to enter and leave. San Francisco’s cable cars have a reputation as “mobile city landmarks” and a musthave for tourists. It’s not just for tourists; it also allows residents of Russia Hill, Nob Hill, Chinatown, and North Beach to commute to the financial district every day.

Fortunately, the location of the project is close to various transportation modes. The site not only provides a convenient, dedicated shuttle to all employees but also access to the nearest BART station and MUNI stops. Also, the site is conveniently located a walking distance to the bay area. The Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge are both within driving distance. The convenient transportation feature can make the location of the project more attractive to guests. Chapter 3 Analysis

The fast way to get around the Bay Area is the wellknown Bay Area Rapid Transit—aka BART. Although at peak times, BART is faster, and it seems to work better than other vehicles. However, if tourists and residents want to move around the city, they can choose to use different bus systems in the city instead of the Muni Metro. The San Francisco Bay Ferry Company has three San Francisco terminals, located at Pier 41, the Ferry Building, and AT & T Park. If tourists want to be part of the San Francisco cityscape, they can consider the ferry series. The lack of busy bridges and expensive tolls have made ferries more attractive to tourists and residents.

In the past, his beautiful building was once the famous TV show, the indoor shooting scene of “The Street of San Francisco. The interior of the building still has the movie set ambiance at the time. The building is built with masonry and reinforced concrete, and the exterior is covered with metal. This building offers tenants the opportunity to be the lone occupant and fully realize their brand through their space. One surface lot with approximately ten spaces and an adjacent underground garage serves the building. A mezzanine opens to a soaring, open floor plan. The area includes public and private offices with conference rooms. There are three parking lots nearby the building, and they are pay parking. The interior non-structure wall of the existing building will be demolished, and the bearing wall or column will be retained. The height of the building is twenty-six feet in total. he unique interior space of The Mad Hostel will bring unprecedented excitement to the beautiful San Francisco, just like preparing for a crazy adventure with Alice in Wonderland. The exaggerated and exaggerated design makes the whole mediocre building lively and exciting. The particular window opening method can brighten and refresh the formerly dim interior. The hostel offers six incredible room designs for guests to choose from and experience. Exaggerated public spaces contrast with simple yet functional guest rooms. Thus, there is no correct answer for the interior in The Mad Hostel. It only has LIFE. I

n order to create a strong sense of fairy tales, I decided to look for design elements from the characters in the story. Those elements will undergo decomposition and evolution, and then be combined and used variably in each space. I extracted features from the clothing accessories and behaviors of white rabbit, playing cards, queen of hearts, and the caterpillar. The white rabbit running in the grass was holding a pocket watch in his hands, wearing glasses, and wearing a red and white outfit that impressed me. The playing cards tried to paint the white rose into red before the queen of hearts arrived. The queen of hearts sitting on the throne held a scepter of love. Among the flowers was a blue caterpillar sitting on a beautiful mushroom, smoking a hookah. These fragments and clothing elements will be combined without any sense of inconsistency. In addition to the guest rooms and bathrooms, there is an entertainment area, community kitchen, reading area, computer area, community, and banquet hall on the second floor. The banquet hall is located at the front of the second floor because it can host events or rent out to the public without disturbing the hotel guests. The community kitchen, reading area, computer area, and community are located in the same area that does not require sunlight but is a bit far from the guestrooms. ost of the windows are on the southeast and south side of the building. Therefore, the restaurant is naturally located in the east of the building. On the one hand, guests can dine here; on the other hand, it is also open to residents and tourists in San Francisco. In order to welcome guests from Embarcadero Muni stops, the hostel lobby should be located south of the building. Making it easy for renters to rent bicycles, the bicycle rental area must be closest to the hotel entrance. Thus, it is a wise choice to share a space between the reception desk and the bike rental area. Executive office, back of house and reception should be close and communicate with each other because employees can easily access. The guestrooms, laundry, bathroom, and janitor closet must be close to each other so that they can be easily accessed and used.

space planning T

he most crucial link in this building is the circulation of space. The project will retain two original entrances and exits, and an additional employee entrance will be available. Restaurants and hostels will have separate entrances. The entries for the hostel and staff are on Kearny Street, and the access for the restaurant is on Chestnut street. The restaurant not only serves guests, but it is also open to the public. The restaurant includes a reception area, takeaway area, waiting area, mini bar, dining area, men’s and women’s toilets, and kitchen. The hostel lobby was waiting for the guests at one time, so I set it up at the front part of the hostel. The rooms will be distributed on the first and second floors. The laundry area and shared bathroom on the first floor are located at the end of the first floor. In addition to washing machines and dryers in the laundry area, there are also water dispensers and lockers. In addition to shared bathrooms separated by men and women, the hostel also offers gender-free bathrooms on the first and second floors. The reading area, community area, and community kitchen located in the same space, so I set them at the end of the second floor without natural light. Tenants can reach the restaurant directly through the stairs at the end of the second floor, but for the safety of the tenants, the door of this staircase is set to be restricted from going out. The cafe and bar location must have natural lighting and beautiful plants to attract customers, so I place it in an easily exposed place, the top floor. Planting evergreen plants with plenty of California sunshine is not only easy to take care of, but also creates unique shadow effects. Chapter 5 Project Design

focus area T he lobby of the hostel is always the first and last space to serve the guests, so the lobby is like a receptionist who can’t move or speak. In order to be a competent “receptionist,” the lobby needs to be designed. Using the elements obtained from the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, an extremely eye-catching reception area was developed. Different levels of red and white diamond tiles are used to create shadows of different strengths. Half of the black and white deformed clock placed in the middle of the reception desk is more conspicuous by the red and white diamond bricks. In addition, the deformed clock can complete the other half of the clock through the weak reflection of the floor tiles. Acrylic logo lighting becomes more prominent due to the green artificial grass wall. A bicycle rental area sharing a lobby with the reception area provides bicycles for guests to visit nearby attractions. The way upright bikes are placed and the design of fake flowers of different sizes on the artificial grass wall comes from the playing cards on the ladder to paint flowers. Only such a space design technique can make visitors have an unforgettable first impression.

Legend Lobby Restaurant

The restaurant is one of the sources of income for the hostel. The caterpillar of Alice in Wonderland smokes a hookah and spit out smoke rings, giving the restaurant a different space design. The bar counter and bar chair are designed through the caterpillar form, and the hidden lamps under the bar form an alternative floating feeling. A partition wall separates the bar and dining area, giving customers a sense of entering another space. To create an upside-down dining area, unique dark ceilings, translucent dining tables, and chairs, and black and white floor tiles have become essential design techniques. The small reading area and the community share a space, with the reading area as the main area and the community as the secondary area. The reading area is based on the Queen of Hearts theme. To set off the reading area, I made a sharp contrast with a clean and straightforward but exaggerated community. Different sizes and shapes of seats, sofas, coffee tables, and rocking horses form a fun and crazy space. Chapter 5 Project Design

ne child in every family is different, and my family is no exception. My family is in business, but I am only interested in art. Fortunately, when I was seven years old, I met the Enlightenment teacher in my life. He taught me to pay tribute to art in different ways. His unique teaching method not only indirectly stimulated my passion for art design but also developed my creative thinking. During my college years, I gained experience by participating in various competitions and government cases. The thing that most affected me was the case of designing a house with my classmates. The owner’s needs were not only interior design but also four fish ponds, nine dog houses, and parking yards. After the case was over, the owner was quite satisfied and invited us to dinner together. After that, I was more confident that I should continue my design journey. After graduating from university, I traveled to various countries and learned the local culture, history, and design style. I think those trips are necessary because that information can be part of my design element. After the tour, I decided to continue my studies in the United States. I believe that American cultural differences can make my design more meaningful. Chapter 5 About
