KARIM RASHID


4 arim was born in Egypt and raised in Canada. He is known as an industrial designer and interior architect. He is one of the most prolific designers in this generation. Karim involved himself in various field of designs including furniture, lighting, surface design, brand identity and packaging. Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in over 35 counties attest to Karim’s legend of design.

KING OF COLORS Karim’s designs style is all in sensual curves and bright color, it is instantly recognizable and best described as sensual minimalism. His ideas are techno-organic and info-aesthetic. They combine both natural soft lines with conven -ient solutions.

Karim’s work is featured in 20th century permanent collections and he exhibits art in galleries worldwide. His award winning designs include luxury goods for Christofle, Veuve Clicquot, and Alessi, democratic products for Umbra, Bobble, and 3M, furniture for Bonaldo and Vondom lighting for Artemide and Fabbian, high tech products for Asus

In year 2001, he has been described as “the most famous industrial designer in all the Americas” by Time Magazine.


5 Currently, Karim is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences disseminating the importance of design in everyday life. Karim latest monograph, Sketch, features 300 hand and digital drawings selected from the last 25 years. Other books include Karim Space, featuring 36 of Karim’s interior architecture designs; Design Your Self, Karim’s guide to living; Digipop, a digital exploration of computer graphics; Compact Design Portfolio; and two monographs titled Evolution and I Want to Change the World. During Karim’s spare time, he pluralism flirts with art, fashion, and music. He is said to be a talented guy that determined to creatively touch every aspect of our physical and virtual landscape. 9

“Good design is a rapture of experience. I believe objects and spaces should not be obstacles in life but raptures of experience. Objects become the organisms we live with.” said Karim.


6 Karim Rashid has created a faceted glass bottle and visual identity for American vodka brand Anestasia. He referenced the angular strokes of the letters V and K in the word vodka when designing the asymmetric form of the Anestasia bottle, which he first began work on in 2012.

“The bottle’s faceted form grew out of the gustatory feelings for the vodkabut also I actually played with the letters of vodka,” said Rashid. “The V’s and K’s made for great faceted forms.” Karim Rashid was also responsible for the typography and logo for the product. 9

arim Rashid has created a chair for Belgian furniture brand Feek, featuring a two-colour seat of two parts that snap together.

The chair consists of a metal frame, which supports two expanded-polypropylene pieces that form the seat and backrest. It was launched at Interieur 08 in Kortrijk, Belgium, in October. The chair is 99% recyclable and a perfect example of “Cradle to Cradle� design. Using only three different parts, metal frame, Expanded Poly Propylene seat half and plastic stoppers, the entire lifecycle of Snap was considered during the design process. Made out of 100% recyclable EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) the seat contains 95% air and only 5% material making it very lightweight. Customers can design own snap chair by combining 2 colors and can be easy upholstered by customers. 9

arim Rashid has created a baby's bottle that heats milk to body temperature without using electricity.

It is named as Iiamo Go, the product heats the milk using a disposable capsule containing water and salt. Heat is generated as the salt becomes re-hydrated. iiamo go is a self-heating feeding bottle that gives parents on the go the ability to serve body temperature milk to their baby anywhere anytime without the use of electricity. iiamo go is the only bottle in the world with this unique combination of a portable, non-electrical, throw-away

organic heating cartridges (iiamo warm) and a patented heating technology that is integrated into the bottle itself. The process is very simple. Pour the mother’s milk, formula or milk powder in the bottle; insert the cartridge in the bottom of the bottle and then just push, wait a few minutes and serve the milk. The World Health Organization recommends heating the milk to body temperature before served to babies and this is now possible no matter where the family is – in the car, at the office, at the grandparents, in the supermarket, in a cafÊ or in the park.


11 In contrast to the vast majority of feeding bottles iiamo go is produced in the 100 percent BPA-free material PP (polypropolene). iiamo warm – the heating cartridge is part of the mystery and secrecy behind the iiamo go success and consist of only salt (CaCl2) and water generating heat by using the re-hydration energy from dehydrated salt. Karim says of the design “Feeding a baby is a warm, intimate moment between parent and child. The bottle enables that human connection. Though a very functional product, a baby bottle doesn’t need to be a strictly functional. However, emotional and aesthetic appeal must be considered too. Children love reflective shiny colorful surfaces and materials – I do too - maybe I am still a child. So it was time to make a baby bottle a wild interesting sculptural colorful animated object so the baby actually gets excited about being fed.” 9

Karim Rashid has renovated the University of Naples subway station in Naples, Italy. The University of Naples subway station is highly trafficked by a multi-cultural, academic community of thousands of passengers a day. Therefore, Rashid create a creative concept that communicates and embodies knowledge in the new digital age, language in the shrinking global landscape, innovation and mobility in this third technological revolution.

Naples is no longer a historic southern city of Italy but instead now is an integral intellectual information haven that extends itself throughout the rest of the world. “This is the changing Italy and the station is a metaphor of this new wired global condition. It integrates the station with its surroundings, as well as provides a platform for innovative, cutting-edge design strategy.” said Rashid. Karim Rashid utilizes the dissension from the piazza to the subway platforms to represent a metaphorical shift from the conscious brain to the spiritual mind. Experiencing this journey, the commuter is able to define one’s own experience by interpreting the individual shift from a busy “brain state” to a focused “mind state”. Entering into the station from the piazza to the subway station, the visitor will walk though a space clad with tiles, each one with is printed with new words created in this last century. Once the visitor arrives in the station lobby, ones is impacted by the soft nature of the space, the striking palette of colors and patterns.

Along the back wall of the station lobby level, lenticular iconography changing colors and perspective provides an interesting siteline as commuters proceed to the platforms below.

Intersecting the space between the heads profile benches (metaphorically intersecting the dialogue) is an abstracted, SYNPOSIS sculpture reflecting the nodes of the brain and the synapses which occur within.

When descending to the subway platforms via escalator, a visitor experiences a transition from the busy piazza to a more intimate, focused environment. It is here where it displays various artworks and other graphic art as a focal point. These abstract images invoke the user to shape the environment according to his/her own creative interpretations.

17 Descending and ascending the stairwells on each respective platform, the steps have abstracted portraits of Dante and Beatrice. Once the commuter arrives at the end of the escalator, transformational digital art follows he/she to the platform stairways. The accent colors, lime and pink, indicates the direction and guide visitors through the descent to the final destination.

Airframe surfaces speak about the beauty of our airframe vowels of the flux and ever dynamic multidimensional information and data age (info static). The platform level of the subway station is where the people spend the most static time. One’s experience while waiting for the subway is enhanced by the tranquil, imaginative environment of the “mind state”. Seating is provided in the form of landscape forms.

The back wall of the subway platform is a backlit artwork, providing a continuous soft glow in the space. Across the platform, digital artwork creates an entertaining distraction. In addition to related iconography, the piece could include a shadow of an oncoming train, etc. to signify a train’s arrival. A subway station is a temporal, transitional space, yet the commuter is contained for a short period of time before continuing his/her journey. As he/she transitions from one environment to another, he/she is most likely reviewing the day’s previous events, or preparing for the next task. Our concept focuses on the commuter experience within the train station, and how the surrounding environment can serve as a respite in a day’s schedule. 9

SWITH Rashid intentions in designing Switch Restaurant are: I wanted Switch to be a strong, symmetrical vision composed of a continuous, undulating wall that wraps around the space. The design creates an interesting texture for light and shadow, evoking the sand dunes in the desert. It is a unique environment of symmetry and balance that completely envelops the guests.

arim Rashid has completed the interior of a restaurant in Dubai, UAE. The restaurant is called Switch and is arranged along undulating walls that change colour continuously. The ceiling is decorated with Arabic writing, lit from behind.

“The wall is inspired by the Arabic letter S turned on its side. 'Shin,' like the Greek Sigma, a play on the word Switch," explains Rashid. "Shin as a prefix even means “which,” going along with the name of the restaurant, Switch," he continues. But switch is also something like a change of direction, a transformation.

Every experience is composed of views, smells, tastes and sounds; here, the senses create individual backgrounds for a truly amazing global dining experience. The backlit ceiling artwork consists of stylized inspirational Arabic phrases. The continuous wave seating provides an efficient and dynamic operating system. I wanted to create a powerful, clean space that offers a beautiful perspective. I wanted to create an oasis free from chaos. My intention was to create a truly unique space for the Dubai Mall that will become an iconic reference, not only in Dubai, but also in the rest of the world. 9

21 Karim Rashid is one of the most significant designers in the modern world of 21st century. He practiced his own style in minimalism and playing with colors. He is an industrial designer with permanent residence in New York, where he designed the 90% of his own furniture, and looking forward to complete the 100% in the future. Karim Rashid is an excellent designer who is inspired and obsessed of carrying success as a beautiful fulgent experience. After almost 30 years of working in product design and architecture, Karim Rashid has now become a legend to many designer newbies. Karim Rashid is a man who loves his life and appreciates everything in his surroundings. He takes everyday as a new challenge. Every new project, new typology, new opportunity he gets, he has never left them until it fulfilled his own satisfaction. Though with quite a number of years of experience, Karim Rashid had never stop learning and improving. In an interview, he proposed that “I feel like I am only 25 years of age, out of school and just starting. I have so much I want to do that I feel I have accomplished nothing yet”. In the middle age of life, Karim Rahsid has own his impressive number of portfolio with over 3,000 designs in production and over 300 awards. Yet, he has never considered himself at the top. When he was ask the question, what made him want to become a designer? Karim Rashid answer impressed me. He said that he doesn’t think he became a designer but he think he has always been a designer. He realized his life’s mission at the age of five in London. He went sketching with his father in England, drawing churches. He was taught to draw perspective, designs and touch all aspects of physical landscape. Karim Rashid started to draw things and redesign things throughout his childhood, and he is obsessed with drawing things in his surroundings. To him, design, art, architecture, fashion, or film- it was all the same to: creation, beauty, and communication.


22 As a student, I have always been trap in the problem of lack of ideas. However, the work of Karim Rashid has inspired me with his outstanding style and his wonderful play with bright and energetic colors. I believed that every designer will run into the bottleneck, but how did Karim Rashid overcome this problem? His childhood, his education, all of his teacher that taught him before, every project he have worked on, all of this are the resources of his ideas. For Karim Rahsid, everything can be inspiring, just depends on how we look at the world. Using the five sense, Karim Rashid see, taste, smell, hear and feel the things that surrounded him and all of this was his main resources of ideas come from. Despite having a fully-compacted daily schedule, Karim Rashid has always spared his time wisely. It is true that as a designer, we need to compromise and manage our time efficiently. Karim Rashid does his creation whenever his ideas appear doesn’t matter in bed, office, restaurant or any other places. He has a personal interest to work on planes where is said to be the place where he can fully concentrate on his projects. In life, Karim Rashid have never claim to have running out of time, as he manage his time schedully and appreciate every single minute in his life. With the powerful mind thinking and well-controlled self-discipline, Karim Rashid manages to travel around 180 days a year, sleep seven and half hour exactly per day. The main philosophy he practiced in his overwhelmed life is that he dreams about what he want to do, and not what he think he must do. In the time where Karim Rashid first moves to New York, he has nothing with him. No contracts, no money, no visa, no apartment. It was very tough for him at that time. He was very sick and depressed and intellectually lonely, he eventually lost 20 kilograms. He used to survive by teaching part time at a graduate school at Pratt for very little, but it gave him a visa and enough to scrape by and buy a Mac computer. The poor life of Karim Rashid causing him embarrassingly borrowed money from his parents at the age of 33 to pay for his loft renting fees. In between, Karim Rashid lived on corn pasta and soy


23 milk. Eventually after contacting about 100 companies, Karim Rashid finally got his first commission and started to develop his own ideas. “We must make our own opportunities. The phone does not ring if you do not show the world what you can do.� Karim Rashid works is one that rapture of experience. He turns create objects and spaces that become the organisms we live with. Karim Rashid combine objects with human nature, where he believes our lives are elevated when we experience beauty, comfort, luxury, performance and utility seamlessly together. Karim Rashid valued beauty as a seamless combination of inner and outer, like an abstract painting that we consider beautiful because below the surface there is content. Good design should conscious the outer and subconscious the inner. The full compile of function, material, form, performance, texture, color and ease are all inseparable in a beauty object or space. Karim Rashid practices his own style known as sensual minimalism, but also technorganic and infostethic. He always tries to create, even a little level of his own originality or innovation in all of his work; whether it is a new material, new form, new production method, new market, a new message, new experience or completely new concepts. In life, he believes that we could be living in entirely different world, non-stop experiencing and exploring new things. Design has always been the cultural shaper of our world from the start. We design everything, and always been improving from the past to the future. Sensual minimalism proposes a kind of curved and egg shaped objects, where Karim Rashid is known for. He positively transforms a message of softness, flowing energy and infiniteness. Karim Rashid believes our spaces should be soft, curved and conceptual. It should be engage with technology, visuals, textures and lot of colors, as well as all the needs that are intrinsic to living a simpler, less cluttered but more sensual envelopment.


24 Meanwhile, there is a very special trademark of Karim Rashid is his personal fashion sense. Pink color is surely one of his hallmarks where he doesn’t just put it on his objects and interior decoration, but even quite often to wear it. In this case, Karim Rashid perform his personal view in sense of color, where to him, pink is energetic, fulgent, engaging and a moxie to the masculine world that dominates our built landscape. Once in an interview, Karim Rashid confess that he loves pink as there are so many variations and shades of pink for every mood, or even a person. Pink also clearly communicated the idea of immateriality, entropy, energy and strong optimism. He hopes that he can contribute in the idea of “Pink is the new black!”, and publish a new trend! Recently, Karim Rashid has turned his creative eye to architecture. Here, I would like to emphasize one of his project named three eye-popping HAP condos which now under construction in New York City. In comparing with small scale design on object, Karim Rashid totally loves the larger experiential impact condominium that can have people live in. With interior design or public space, he knew that masses of people have access to his designs, and that they are not just looking at it but physically immersing themselves inside his concepts. He feels that residents will have a great positive human experience that goes beyond just style. Karim Rashid took the opportunity to play with the idea of pattern, grid and repetition working in HAP. The pattern created is a way of giving richness and depth to the Castesian landscape. And for the new coming HAP four, Karim Rashid wanted to create a building that uses pattern, geometry, light and color to provide the luxury of wellbeing to its inhabitants. HAP Six is located on one of Manhattan’s most heavily trafficked streets. Therefore, Karim Rashid designed the condo with three dimensional pattern unfolds across the East and West Facades along the balcony railing giving character and playfulness to the facades while producing beautifully faceted patterns of light that filter into the living space behind.


25 As for HAP five, Karim Rashid explore the colors by making HAP five stands out as a strong play of light, color and modular geometry. He used the balcony as design feature to generate dynamic play and variety along the façade of the building. The colored glass railing gives character and playfulness to the façade while producing beautifully colored light that penetrates into the living space behind. Each unit received the large, yet intimate space that extends the senses beyond the interior, making the apartment feel bigger and brighter than it actually is. In the three buildings, Karim Rashid manifests a main concept of “democratization of design”. Based on the concept, the building are built on very low budgets, and the savings are passed onto the buyers so that the price pinpoints will be excellent as well, encouraging more “entry level” apartments for younger people. Karim Rashid hold a thought where, he design luxury, but he don’t design for wealthy people, but he design for everyone. Those designs must be very smart, maximize choices and use materials to have maximum impact. He has never forget the budget constrains philosophy tenets he has been preaching for years, though it is very challenging. Other than eco-conscious, Karim Rashid also encourages sustainable and green measures in designing the condo. He uses biodegradable flooring throughout made by Parador flooring. All lighting in the buildings is either LED or fluorescent, which are low energy consumption. All in all, Karim Rashid is truly a good role model for me in design path as he reflects a lot of value qualities that a designer should hold and he positively demonstrates them through his products and designs work. Karim Rashid contributes a lot in the modern world of design from products to furniture, to interior and to architecture, with his own style. I personally favor his sense in color, the style he carry on, the idea he creates and the way he daring to be unique and outstanding, I am pretty sure it’s the courage where any designer should have in building their own styles! 9

ffEFFECTS BOKEH Bokeh refers to the aesthetic quality of blur, the out of focus area of the image. It’s how the light renders lighted areas that are out of focus. The difference in lens aberrations and aperture shape causes the area to blur, creating the look that’s aesthetically pleasing. Many photographers deliberately use the shallow-focus technique to create images with prominent bokeh areas. The term comes from Japanese ‘boke’, which literally means haze or blur. 9

PANNING Panning refers to the horizontal, vertical or rotational movement of an image still or video. It’s an age-old technique. To achieve panning, you must have a moving subject that you must ‘stay with’ whilst framing the shot before and after you press the shutter. This will create an interesting effect, with your subject being sharp amid a blurred background. Great for shooting moving subjects or racing and sports events. 9


30 Rule OF thirds The rule of thirds is one of the most basic principles of composition. It has been used for many centuries by artists, painters and now, photographers. With the Rule of Thirds, the photographer breaks down the photo into thirds, horizontally & vertically so that you have nine equal parts. The main subject is not placed in the middle of the frame, thus it looks dynamic, moving and interesting. When you are taking a picture you must mentally divide your viewfinder or

LCD display into three to frame your shot. With the grid in mind, identify the important points of interest and frame. Effective uses of the rule of thirds create movement and interest in any photograph. 9


31 THE GOLDEN HOUR The Golden Hour, also referred to as the Magic Hour, refers to the first hour the sun rises and the last hour the sun sets. It creates a different quality of light; it adds interest and drama to the scene. It’s the perfect time of the day for creating magnificent photos–but we need to be quick, because lighting quickly changes and fades away. During sunrise and sunset, the sun is near the horizon so the daylight is of the indirect light from the sky, reducing intensity of the sun’s bright light. There is softer lighting, warmer hues and longer shadows. In other times of the day, the sun’s light can be too bright and harsh.

The sun’s harsh light is particularly a problem in portrait photography, for the light can create unwanted strong shadows around the face and body. With landscape photography, photographing landscape during the golden hours enhances the colors of the scene. 9


32 GOLDEN RECTANGLE The Golden Rectangle, (also the Golden Mean or the Golden Ratio) is another guideline for composition and a variation of the Rule of Thirds, but more intricate. The Golden Rectangle is the mean of the ratio of numbers on the Fibonacci Sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and so on). The ratio creates a golden rectangle, which is comprised of a square and half of the square in the same dimension.

Again, the concept goes back to several centuries. The Golden Rectangle is even used to frame Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Paintings, artworks and photos following the Golden Rectangle tend to be stunning and pleasing to the eye. It’s because it’s an aesthetic proportion that can be found naturally: flowers, shells, butterflies and even the human body. It is very hard to frame the image to the Golden Rectangle means directly from the LCD or viewfinder. Thankfully, there are now several programs that you can use to crop your photos to the Golden Rectangle dimensions during post-production. 9


33 FILL FLASH Fill Flash is a technique in photography where the photographer uses flash to ‘fill in’ dark areas of the image. It’s perfect for backlit environments. The background is usually a lot brighter than the subject. To create fill flash, adjust the aperture and shutter speed correctly to expose the background, use flash to lighten the foreground but still retain the qualities of the background. We use flash when: the subject is in a shadow, when there is more light on the background than on the foreground, and when we are close enough to the subject for flash. The built-in flash is only powerful enough to reach up to 9

feet only.Fill Flash can brighten deeply shadowed areas, improving the image without overexposing the other areas of the image. Fill Flash is great for illuminating the eyes, especially on bright days and the subject is wearing a cap. 9


34 LONG EXPOSURE Long exposure is another interesting photography effect which entails a narrow aperture and long duration shutter speed. This is done in order to create dreamy landscapes, capturing the stationary elements while blurring the moving elements of the image. Long exposure can be tricky. It should be taken in low light situations, most often photos will be overexposed because having long exposure on sunny days can be a problem, as too much light will enter the lens.

It is often referred to as ‘night photography’. Interesting subjects to shoot are stars, moving cars and lights. However, there are many beautiful long exposure photographs taken during low light daytime. Shooting fog and water on long exposure is popular in photography. 9


35 CONTRE-JOUR Contre-jour is a popular photography effect. It is French for ‘against daylight’, the camera is directly pointing towards the light source. Countre-jour is, basically, is the fancy speak of ‘silhouette photography’. The light source is located directly behind the subject. The contre-jour effect produces high contrast photos between light and dark. It hides details yet emphasizes contour of the subject and shapes. Contre-jour is more popular in nature & landscape photography. The effect is often used to add a more dramatic mood and intense ambiance to the scene. Ironically though, contre-jour can enhance or reduce the quality of detail in the photo. Some recommend using a lens hood to enhance the effect of contre-jour in photographs, significantly reducing the glare coming into the lens. If too much light enters the lens, it will cause overexposure, causing the photo to lose definition. 9

80 Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution. Ansel Adams Photograph is a close object that appears in our life. It captures all the moment that are precious, and help us to keep it as a memory. It seems like good things and cherish moment can be trap in the photo as if it can last for life-long. Photograph can now be easily obtain from simple digital camera, professional DSLR or even phone camera. Photography is a professional study that the professions make their research in using the camera manually, to control the settings in order to get the effects of photo that they desire. Professional photographer can see things in other ways that most of the people will not understand. Photographer has the passions in creating photos that are normally bombastic and fantastic. They have the professional skills and understanding of photograph art which allow them to take pictures that are superb. As in compare to the professions, most of the people take pictures in life with the main reasons of keeping it as memories. However, to the professions, photograph is an art which allow the photographers to express themselves. Despite of that with the invention of computer and the publish of thousands of photo editing software, the photography nowadays can be easily edit in the way you want, not only to scale the size and tone the color, but more and more effects can be easily achieved. Smart phone applications and photo editor software in computer that commonly used by people to enhance the effect of the photo, as everyone loves to look perfect in their photos. While with the advance in the development of this apps and software, here born a group of people who loves to work out with photos and turn it to another amazing piece of art. These groups of artist are known as photo manipulation artists. They are professional in transforming, combining, editing and matching photos, not only with the perfect skills but also with their stunning and impressive creativities. In the artwork of Christophe Gilbert, we can see that he can very well manipulate liquids like paint and water. Wonderfully witty as well as sexy and cool, his work rises above the rest with its distinct and clever style. As for Riccardo Bagnoli, he has the potential in creating highly imaginative stories in wide range of styles. He creates photos that look like moments from a science fiction movie, such as humans that born from eggs and having superpowers in life. Other photo manipulation artists such as Erik Almas and Andric Ljubodrag has very good skills in producing photos that has nearly perfect lighting and focus which demonstrated in their beautiful photos of vistas and surreal landscapes. One of my favorite artists is Khuong Nguyen which his compose subtle and sweet storytelling using animals and even shoes to make interesting and inspiring photography. Khuong Nguyen is also known for completing an amazing Alice in Wonderland inspired print campaign for a luxury shoe company.


82 There are studios like Staudinger and Franke, Garrigosa Studios and LSD Photo Advertising Studio which are known for different styles and objectives. In common, all of these studios professionally compose, shoot and post-produce all of the image that are beautiful, surreal and with strange art that flips our sense of reality in a fun and unexpected way. All of these firms push artistic boundaries with their incredibly creative work that contribute to the platform of advertisement. Doesn’t matter the photo is taken by a profession or not, I believed every picture taken has a story behind. A photograph that has no story behind is not a good photo; it’s the same as in any form of art. Archaeologies have proved that cosmetics are certainly dates from ancient Egypt and Greece. In the ancient time, castor oil is used in Egypt as a protective balm and skin creams that made by beeswax, olive oil and rosewater. According to Old Testament of bible, cosmetic is also used in Ancient Greek where Jezebel (a princess from Hebrew Book of Kings) painted her eyelids. While in Roman, it is known that women in that time started to use various substances, to whiten and line their eyes. In 3000BCE, Chinese people began to stain their fingernails with gum, while the colors used represent their social class – the royals wear gold and silver, lower class were forbidden to wear bright colors on their nails. At the same time, Grecian women paint their faces with white lead and apply crushed mulberries as rouge. Application of fake eyebrows started to become a new trend. During the middle ages, dyed red hair comes into fashion in Elizabethan England. Women wear egg whites over their face to create a pale complexion. However the use of cosmetic was frowned upon in Western history in earlier 19th century as Queen Victoria declared that makeup is improper, and only for used by actors. After the dead of Queen Victoria in January 1901, women started to appear as young as possible and there leaded cosmetic to become popular. Only then, beauty salons increased in popularity, while people at that time do not willing to admit that they need assistance to look young and therefore they enter salons through the back doors. Make up Tools Every artist need to reach for a brush, to create a work of art, doesn’t matter is on a canvas or your eye crease. Therefore, specialized make up brushes could probably exist to help in applying and blending colors to create a different makeup looks. The art of makeup can also be a complicated study that needed the knowledge of tools and materials, technique and skills, sense of beauty, and require practices as well. Human are sensitive in sense of beauty and always taking care of one’s appearance, therefore the application of makeup is now generally use by public in daily life. Make up plays an important role for one’s appearance especially celebrities. Nowadays, as K-pop has become popular and worldwide famous, people tends to know more about South Korea artist and attracted by their perfect performance, not only performance art but also obsess in their visual art appearance as in their advance in cosmetic. Korea is now in a trend of nude makeup which they practice a natural and innocent look for girls. I personally adore the style as it portrait the natural beauty of girls. Some of the girls feel happy when they are applying makeup as they feel that they are artistic. As they start exploring, they start to create they own styles and stagger their creativity when they getting older. While doing make up for others, they feel that there are no limits. They can always try out different techniques without the fear of it “going to waste” because if they mess up, it is easy to start over again. The other reason why girls like to put on makeup is that it helps to correct thing that cannot always correct on one’s own. As an example, girls who have horrible dark circles would very much pleasure with a cover of concealed on them, which can cover their imperfectness. 108 STORY OF PAPER CRAFT Paper craft is the collection of art forms employing paper or card as the primary artistic medium for the creation of three-dimensional objects. It is a form of art where can lend itself a wide range of techniques, such as fold, cut, glue, layer and more. It is the most widely used material in arts and craft which normally done by hand. The word “paper” derives from papyrus, the name of the ancient material manufactured from beaten needs in Egypt as far back as the third millennium B.C. The earliest known example of “paper folding” is an ancient Egyptian map, drawn on papyrus and folded into rectangular forms like modern road map. However, paper folding doesn’t consider an art from at that time. Not until the introduction of wood-pulp based papers by Cai Lun from the Eastern Han Dynasty in China during the 2nd century B.C. The first Japanese origami (term refers to the art of paper folding in Japan) is dated from the 6th century A.D. 9

Step 1: Prepare 6 Sheets tissue paper, 1 pipe cleaner, scissors Step 2: Select 6 sheets of tissue paper, stack the paper neatly. The color of that you want it as the center of your flower should be on top; likewise, the color on the bottom is the back of the flower. Step 3: Fold the stack In a 1 inch accordion fold (like a paper fan). Stack it in portrait position, take the bottom which is the short side of stack and fold it up about an inch. Flip the stack over, take the preexisting fold, and fold it upwards another inch. Flip the stack again, fold and repeat until the stack is in one inch strip. Step 4: Take a pipe cleaner and fold it over the middle of strip, and fold over the side that shows your top color. Then twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together to securely fasten around the center of paper strip. Step 5: Cut each end into petal shape with creativity, it can be in many shapes as shown in the picture. Step 6: Hold the strip so the pipe cleaner ends pointing down, unfold the stack on both sides and open into a circular shape. Step 7: Carefully separate the top piece of tissue and peel the layers up and toward the center. Make it stand up in a nice ring. Repeat with all layers. Step 8: Your flower is now done, attach your flower to whatever you would like to adorn!


111 Richard Sweeney Richard Sweeney is an UK designer who major in paper sculpture construction and recently recognized for his ingenuity with the New Designer DKNY Award. Richard Sweeney was born in Huddersfield, England in 1984. He discovered a natural talent for sculpture at Batley School of Art and Design in 2002, which led him to the study of Three Dimensional Design at the Manchester Metropolitan University, where he concentrated on the hands-on manipulation of paper to create design models, which ultimately developed into sculptural pieces in their own right. Richard’s practice combines the disciplines of design, photography, craft and sculpture, resulting in a varied output of work including graphic design and public sculpture commissions. Richard seeks to maintain an experimental, hand-on approach, utilizing the unique properties of often mundane materials to discover unique sculptural forms. He has lectured at universities internationally and regularly holds workshops to share his knowledge of paper folding and construction techniques. Yulia Brodskaya‌

Yulia Brodskaya was born in 1983, Moscow, Russia. She is a highly regarded paper artist and illustrator. She uses two simple materials: paper and glue, and a simple technique that involves the placement of carefully cut and bent strips of paper to make lush, vibrant, and three-dimensional paper artworks. Yulia Brodskaya started working as a graphic designer and illustrator in 2006, however she quickly abandoned the computer programs in favor of paper art. Soon after discovering her passion and unique style, Brodskaya has swiftly earned an international reputation for her innovative paper illustrations and was named the 'breakthrough star' of the 2009 by Creative review magazine. Her modern take on the paper craft practice has helped her build an impressive list of clients in just a few short years, from HermĂŠs to Starbucks to Godiva, Target, Sephora, The New York Times Magazine and many others (more than 100 projects over the 5 years). Yulia Brodskaya is frequently invited to speak at design conferences and design schools around the world: the talks include renowned Friends of St Bride Library Conference; Guardian's the art of Illustration master class. The original artworks are owned by Oprah Winfrey, Ferrero, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Country Music Association and numerous private collectors. 9


1 19 Mesmerizing Paper Art by YULIA

BRODSKAYA Yulia Brodskaya carefully cuts and folds colorful pieces of paper to create stunning portraits and pictures. She has mastered the art of quilling, which is the practice of creating illustrations by bending strips of paper rather than using toxic paints. Yulia Brodskaya’s pieces draw form a longstanding art form that was reserved for women in the past.

Quilling has been practiced since the Renaissance, and it traditionally used to repurpose strips of paper that were cut from the gilded edges of books. The paper ribbons were then spun into simple shapes like flowers or decorative coils. Quilling was considered an un-academic art that was practiced by ladies of leisure.


Yulia Brodskaya’s massive, multi-layered portraits challenge the art form’s simplistic associations. The trained graphic designer became interested in quilling due to a fascination with the medium – she’d kept a collection of vintage papers to use for collages and as backgrounds of her illustrations. Having practiced quilling as a child, she refined her practice to create the complex works she makes today, which she calls “paper graphics.”

Scrolls of colorful paper ribbons are bent and swirled perfectly to form words and textures, with no margin for error. The paper edges are held into place with a thin strip of glue, and Brodskaya builds up layers until she feels each image is complete. 9

128 Paper craft art may not be as general as photography in this generation. Despite of that, it is an interesting form of art that use paper as the medium and done using various methods to create different forms. A small research was done based on the two famous artists that known for their inspiring paper craft art works. However, there are similarities and differences between these two artists. In compare of their background, Yulia Brodskaya and Richard Sweeney has only one year difference in age, where Yulia Brodskaya is born in year 1983 while Richard Sweeney is born in year 1984. Yulia Brodskaya is a woman who was born in Moscow, Russia and moved to United Kingdom in year 2004; Richard Sweeney is born and raised in Huddersfield and now based in Manchester where he completed his studies in three dimensional design. Both of these artists have earlier interest in design and art since younger age before they turn into time when they need to choose their career. Yulia Brodskaya was send into an art school since she was 6 years old, so she started practice art before she had the chance to consider her career options. With no regrets, she supposes this is a case of spotting the right tendency in a child very early. Richard Sweeney has always wanted to be an architect since young. However, he then give up on it as he felt that it will be too rigid. Therefore, he chose to continue his study in art, which he felt it offered more freedom. Until now, Richard Sweeney still has a great interest in architecture as he has a strong and powerful admiration for structure, how things to be shaped, to solve the physical problem and also create sculptural form. The artist has very different styles in contributing to their art work. In Yulia Brodskaya case, she is using Quilling technique which uses different paper and using cocktail straw, small cocktail stick and started to shape the paper strips in very free way as if she was drawing with paper. Using variety of colors, she use the quilled strips to construct imagery and type to achieve an effect, which is unique,


129 and 3D tactile charm to it. She has never limit herself to basic shapes that used in the traditional Quilling technique. Yulia Brodskaya started making the papergraphic illustrations about three and half years ago. At that time, she was planning to create a small brochure with her hand-drawing illustrations to be sent out to potential clients. She was looking for an eye-catching typographic image with her name “Yulia” for the cover. She created a number of hand-drawn variants but she didn’t like any of them. She then remember the Quilling technique that she has once used for school project, and so there comes her first papergraphic, the starting point of her experiment with paper quilling. Richard Sweeney’s deigns are investigations into materials, structure and pattern. He uses simple materials to explore both the handmade and machine manufactured multiple which inspired by complex geometries and patterns of growth in nature. Richard Sweeney produces highly detailed drawings and scale models to explore new forms. He also experiments with computer and aided design. The five new lighting designs bring together curved folding with regular geometric solids, such as the dodecahedron, the forms evolving through a process of hands-on modeling and refinement. As in common both of the artists is much more obsess in the medium that they used in their art work. Sweeney is interested in the intrinsic properties of the medium he is using where he said, “the objects I create have an underlying simplicity of construction that betrays their complex appearance, which is further emphasized by the use of everyday materials, such as paper.” Same to Yulia Brodskaya, she confessed that to her, there is nothing much that interests her at the moment, but just paper. The legendary of these two artists’ art works has also influenced by other factors such as the historic artist they admired or their interest in other aspects. For Richard Sweeney, architecture is a great inspiration to him, other than man-made; he is also


130 inspired by natural forms. Not only the organic shapes but the means that it generated and from there, Richard Sweeney makes a great sense to borrow elements from biological structures, as those forms demonstrate the pinnacle of material, structure and functional efficiency. For Yulia Brodskaya, the historic artist that she is most influenced is Gustav Klimt, who is a well-known Austrian painter. She was inspired by Klimt’s “Golden phase� where many of his paintings from his period used gold leaf. She admired the decorativeness of the work, the ultimate development of ornament and high level of intricate details that form the whole picture and make it fascinating looking. Therefore, Yulia Brodskaya is also trying to achieve the similar thing in her work as well. Richard Sweeney developed his piece of work in paper, combine with curve folding with regular geometric solids such as dodecahedron. The work is then evolves through hands-on modeling and refinement, where he first use computer to draw two dimensional layouts and folded by hand to create the 3D form. Richard Sweeney also drafts the layouts by hand sometimes, and using computer to achieve a higher degree of accuracy, giving greater freedom for quick experimentation. Yulia Brodskaya works in home, where in her studio she has a table which is her main working surface and a few paper storage units. She uses it to keep pre-cut strips of paper from various colors, uncut paper sheets and piles. During sketching stage, Yulia Brodskaya also uses computer to do her sketching. In short, each of the artists performed their own styles and this can be clearly identified by their pieces of work. Though both ofthese artists can be consider quite new in the firm, but with their breathtaking awesome artwork, I believe they will be the stars in paper arts in no time, and longing to see what will happen next where their works will go. 9

150 As a designer, creative ideas and critical thinking are the prior component of one’s basic need. Creativity can be define as the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships or to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations and more. It can also be said to be originality, progressiveness or imagination. The question that always pops up and mostly faced by a designer is that: how to think creatively? Where do creative ideas come from?

After doing a short research in this topic I found out some common attitudes and styles of the creators, and so I come out with a little conclusion on how to think out of the box, be creative and make things useful to our life. From the works of all of the creators, I realized that most of them is creating based on a theme, and also the materials that they used is often related to our daily life. As an example, every idea from the interior Do-ItYourself are all relevant to our domestic needs and used items. Most of them also practice a very good attitude of using recycle items, rearrange and recreate something that are very useful to life. Creating new items is not as tough as what people thing, but in case it just need a little more observations and experience from life. Everything can be an inspiration to everyone and it turns up to be the light up moment for one. Creative ideas does not come up often if you do not think and try to step out of your comfort zone. Therefore, involving creative thinking in our daily life is very important. Live in a creative lifestyle and involve creativity in our everyday life. First, we need to think open-minded. Whenever receive a project, task or assignment, don’t underestimate own abilities. Start everything by brainstorming; think whatever that is possible and list it down, anything that comes up in mind may


151 be an excellent idea that are potential to be the best ideas. However, foster the ides and think if it possible to do it and don’t just write them down to be silly and irrational that can never ever be possible to be done. One thing that researchers have noticed especially creative people is that they tend to re-conceptualize the problem more often than their less creative counterparts. That means, instead of thinking of a cut-and-dry end goal to certain situations, people tends to sit back and examine the problem in different ways before they begin to work. In this case, an easy example given is that, when an author is creating a story or article, the first problem that he examines is not “how is the story going to be?” Instead, what they think is “what should I write that can get a lot of tweets?” The same problem is also happen to some designers when they want to create some structure or form. As people have a wrong mind set, it is very tough for them to come out with a really creative ideas. So, focusing on the correct and critical angle in viewing problem will be necessity in order to come out with something special. Moreover, daydreaming is also one of the sources of ideas. However, get back to work after that is the most important thing. Learning, absorbing, and experiencing are one of the ways in boosting ideas with pattern recognition and creative thinking. When mind is always seeking to make sense of the thing that it sees, and surreal art puts in the mind in “overdrive” for short period while it tries to work out what it is reading or looking at. I loves reading science fictions that came with magical powers that always get inspiration to me and it allows me to keep imagining how the characters look like, how


152 the background is, what is the look of the weapons that they use, and more that could seriously boost up my mind. While consuming all of this resources of ideas, it is also important for us in able to separate our “working time” with our “consuming or absorb state”. Gathering resources by reading, studying research are known as our brain is under the absorb state. We shall not combine work with creative thinking; it will be more efficient if we are possible to separate this two activity, as our brain can work better in only handling one task at once. Thinking and working is a collaborate things that works together. Non-stop boosting yourself and self enrichment may help to increase one’s creativity. Be alert to the things around us and take time to observe the things that happen in our surrounding, we will definitely found out many interest thing that we have never realize and thought of before. Be positive, believe in your ability and don’t stop improving, we can always easily come up with incredible ideas in life. 9
