EX04: Architecture School
Yerandi MendozaInterconnection and fluid circulation are the core features of this architecture school that through the use of elongated curved pathways achieves connectivity of horizontal and vertical space. The plinth is meant to be a versatile space that allows students to move effortlessly from the north to the south side of the plinth or maneuver and take a journey through the centered galleria for recreation and inspiration. The tower meets the ground floor with an open and low elevation public plaza that gives the illusion of a levitating and light tower structure; this plaza also allows a welcoming entrance to the public inside the school since it faces the main public circulation on the south side of the building. As we enter the school through the plaza, we encounter two main courtyards divided by the galleria. Once inside the courtyard the plinth forces us to evaluate a series of different options to experience the space, for we encounter ramps of different elevation and dimensions that lead to different spaces.
The tower consists of three different facade systems each with its individual purpose. The first system consists of laminated glass and stainless-steel panels that work for enclosure. The second facade is made of concrete glass-fiber-reinforced panels that create a semi-monolithic structure that merges inwards with the inside walls to partake with the structure and program of the tower. The third facade system consists of metal louvers that wrap around the tower for sun shading and air flow control
The overall design of the building is meant to inspire architecture students to innovate and believe in a fu-ture full of new possibilities for architecture.
