the egg by arne jacobsen author: taylor yerbury // n9422439 // history, theory & critism

Introduction Industrial Designer and Architect, Arne Jacobsen (born February 11, 1902, Copenhagen - Died March 24, 1971, Copenhagen) designed The Egg™ in 1958 (Britannica Academic 2017), with Fritz Hansen as the manufacturer whom still produces the product to this present day in a wide range of fabrics and leather, and can also be purchased with a matching footstool at the size of 86 cm W x 79-95 cm D. (Chairs 2016). The Egg™ originally made in leather being one of the mid-centuries greatest relaxation swivel chairs, is part of the many triumphs of Jacobsen’s career that incorporates his most intriguing design philosophies; the product being a sculptural contrast to his vertical and horizontally straight architectural designs he so commonly created (Chairs 2016). The seat, back, and arms of this lounge chair has curved like butterfly wings that give a soft, welcoming appearance to its’ users with the use of a single piece of folded polyurethane, while incorporating an extra cushion for padding where the user would sit for extra comfort (Husemann and Philippi 2002). Its’ distinctive graphic outline and talk of the industry construction techniques, created a lasting impression as a piece of art, rather than a simple uninteresting lounge chair.

history The Egg™ was designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen which he was head Architect for in the late 1950s and

was responsible for every design aspect from the building itself to the furniture to the utensils (Chairs 2016). Jacobsen was the first designer to use the new technique of curved fabric layering on top of the strong foam inner shell underneath the upholstery of chromed steel (Fritzhansen.com n.d.), due to him wanting the hotel to inspire its community with new furniture and a new way of living. The Egg™ described as organic and stemming from nature, resembling a warm, relaxing, sense of fun and represents “a broken shell that a little chick has just run out of” while still being sophisticated and minimalist (Adams 2007). By developing this new generational technique in design, created one of the most copied designs in history as well as writing history within Danish industrial design worldwide, for centuries to come (Fritzhansen.com n.d.). construction The construction of The Egg™ is completely handmade with over more than 1,300 stitches, with three simple parts to the product, which are organised in reference to the ergonomic details Jacobsen decided to incorporate (Adams 2007). The fabric, which can range from new wool, pure wool, leather, linen, cotton and more, covers the foam upholstered moulded fibreglass seat shell that sits on top of a swivelling cast of a chrome, aluminium base with a loose foam cushion for extra comfort (Adams 2007). The places in which the person is seated, rests their arms and back within the chair required minimum padding due to Jacobsen’s successful technique of a fluid single piece of polyurethane but achieving a 10 out of 10 comfortability rating. The Egg™ is meant to be as minimalistic as can be in regards to design and construction, therefore no unnecessary decoration was needed therefore developing its’ aesthetics and beauty from the ergonomic detailing in itself. In regards to ethics and morals when considering the materials and manufacturing process of the chair, it can be understood that Fritz Hansen aim to minimise the impact on the environment from using quality plating, recycled foam, water soluble glue, the sale of scape metals to dealers to melt and recycle, recycled paper, cardboard and plastic; and finally the pack

aging of the product is recycled and recyclable (Frit com n.d.). The targetmarket & the eggs’ popularity

The target market was originally for the users whom w situated in the SAS Royal Hotel as stated previousl however, many people have grown to enjoy the modernist design that turned the austerity of functio an elegancy that people have incorporated it in the rooms and places of leisure as a staple piece within th

The Egg™ Chair, one of the most enduring symbols of t ernist movement was created within a the danish g Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen believed that architecture niture design were two expressions of the same desi was to achieve both physical and psychological co the user audience (Adams 2007). The Egg™ chair’s ori sign was supposed to be developed into an optiona which was eventually made within the early 1970s, was changed to be more simplistic. His philosophy scribed as ‘from spoon to city’, in which this chair was within The SAS Royal Hotel (Adams 2007). His origina decoration has since been changed, but have kept o number 606, in Jacobsen’s original decoration, that b months in advance for over 450 pounds a night (Adam Today, The Egg™ is more popular than it has ever be Fritz Hansen’s sales increasing by 50 per cent in the years alone, reaching a historic high for the compa ing their turnover from 50 million ponds to 58 million Original examples from the late 1950s were sold in in New York City for up to $35, 000 pounds (Adam The impact The Egg™ had within the industrial comm the time opened up the eyes of designers to use new als and techniques to turn functionalism into beauty w The price an authentic Egg™ chair from Fritz Hanse from 6,000 EURO to 12,000 EURO depending on th material the user prefers (Fritzhansen.com n.d.).

Gestalt principles

Ergonomic Details The Egg™ was part of the successful revolutionary pieces of industrial design that proved to be ahead of its time, being apart of the ageless pieces the world saw after the war. Its’ ergonomic details were perfectly carved with Jacobsen’s unique sculpting technique that helps create a comfortable curve for the spine, allowing the user to sink in the chair with a large breathe out. Positive ergonomic details include the swivel base that provides the ability to turn whilst seated; the the ability to change the height so the knees are lower than the hips allowing the feet to rest flat on the floor and the arm supports (Tilley 2002). Even though a lot of aspects that consider a chair to be ergonomic are not included does not mean this design is faulted, it just means that this chair is more a staple piece that the user is meant to relax in and not work. The most interactions people would have with this chair, include when one is wanting to read, draw or relax watching television or using there laptop for personal reasons, it is not a work chair of any sorts.

Regarding the Gestalt principles (human’s visual system that attempts to structure what we physically see into patterns to make sense of information), the Egg™ incorporates proximity, connection, central alignment and enclosure of shapes and curves to create the line and contours of the chair, allowing the design to be as successful as it can be (Wong 2010). The gentle curve for the back, opens the common central space the user can sit down within its depth, allowing the eye to understand its’ completion and continuity. Through visual interpolation and illusions allowing us to see contours that are not physically there, prompts us to see patterns, shadows, frames and the body of the object (Wong 2010). In regards to The Egg™ it is clear that through the successful butterfly like curves and appropriate cut outs we see the supposed “cracked egg,” as the eye subconsciously puts what we know to be a cracked chicken egg together in our mind when looking at the chair also creates its’ semantics, relating the birth of a chicken with happiness and playfulness.

mimicry, evolution & opinions The Egg™, one of Jacobsen’s most successful pieces that he designed, constantly being described as “timeless, classic” with a “harmony in the form that makes it so interesting,” the chair was surely going to be replicated by many other furniture corporations, such as Matt Blatt whom sell a replica for astonishingly cheaper ($795 Australian Dollars), along with the illegal mimicry of fakes and the purposeful misleading of keen buyers (Cook 2002). The Egg™ chair throughout the world is being copied and transformed into what companies see fit to try and make something better than The Egg™, however, after all these years since the first original chair by Jacobsen, the authentic have not once been changed (Harrison 2017). The Fritz Hansen chairs still have the same construction technique with the adjustable lever, with only the adjustment of more fabrics and materials available with the aesthetic qualities untouched. For this reason, along with the comfort failure and lever adjustment poor quality; is why knockoffs and copies will not sell as successfully as the original (Harrison 2017). Now a Danish icon, The Egg™ is considered one of Denmark’s industrial and historic identities, where original designs are preserved in Museums and Art Galleries around the world and within their cities most popular centres as well. The matrix of The Egg™ in regards to the cultural and social environment in which The Egg™ developed its success and became one of the main ideologies and inspiration within the industrial design community was when many critics and fans, such as David Mann, principal of MR Architecture and Decor described the Egg™ as something “straight off a Bond movie set” along with being a design from the Jetsons. Although this “brilliant piece of swivelling genius” in another critics account is highly praised, talked and studied about, that was not always the case (Kellogg 2008). The evolution from ugly and concerning to successful and modernistic was slow at the start and came after the Danish press called the SAS Royal Hotel and everything in it shocking, as they had never witnessed biomorphic furniture before. The Egg™ chair was critiqued before people started using them and appreciating its’ simple form. Shelton, Mindel & Associates have bought over 50 chairs since 1978, when the firm first opened their doors and “…cannot remember not using them [as]… everybody thinks they’re comfortable”(Kellogg 2008). With their little to no maintenance, the chair required no puffing or cleaning (except for the leather) - firms alike saw it as a positive for their waiting clients, assuming that it is easier to be patient if you’re comfortable. Funnily enough, in London Mcdonald’s in-house designers even ordered the Egg™ in “mouthwatering shades of apple green, electric blue, and bubble-gum pink,” with critics from all over the world exclaiming that it “doesn’t even matter if they’re all over the place” (Kellogg 2008). legacy Arne Jacobsen, the modernist master who was ahead of the game gave the world The Egg™, that represents the legacy of Jacobsen’s prosperous and successful pieces of his career, with its’ beautiful curves and innovative construction techniques. The Egg™ challenged the industrial world and won the love and appreciation of the people within the modern movement around the world. It was the lounge chair that became the staple piece of every office, firm and household that saw its functionality ease into the aesthetics with simple contours that seem to embrace the user securely. The Eggs™ legacy is passed through every generation as a collectors piece that will never lose its’ value as the construction of these chairs are extremely durable. Auctioneers are still selling original chairs form the 1950s in superb condition. When looking at Patrick Jordan’s chapter, ’The Four Pleasures’ in ‘Designing Pleasurable Products’ he states that there are four pleasures that can be

attached to a usable product “intended as a means of strutting though as regards to pleasure” that includes: physic-pleasures, socio-pleasures, psycho-pleasures and ideo-pleasures (Jordan 2003). When applying this philosophy to The Egg™ it is clear that it falls under ‘psychio-pleasure,’ that prompts people’s emotional reactions, that has to have efficient usability so it does not cause the user annoyance, frustration and stress; an example of this is a computer’s interface (Jordan 2003). It can also be applied to The Egg™ however, because if it had poor usability it would not be one of the world’s most famous lounge chairs but would have been forgotten about back in the late 1950s. The last pleasure that The Egg™ is connected to is the ‘ideo-pleasure’ that is explains people’s values and pleasures that are derived from books, music and art. The bliss of these products relate to personal aspirations and moral values; for example The Egg™ is most defiantly an ‘ideo-pleasure’ as people who value the modern movement, simplistic and functional designs have an infatuation with this chair. It creates excitement and eagerness for people to use it and want to afford it, that a lot of companies have made replicas.

the final evaluation As a result of the successful aesthetic properties, usability, ergonomics, sustainability and durability aspects of The Egg™, this chair will continue to sell and be the staple of households for centuries to come. Through the ethics and morals of social norms the lounge chair will continue to thrive as it is made from sourced material that is recycled or recyclable with adhesives that are not toxic and water soluble. Along with being sustainable, the design triggers emotions and care for the product with its’ neat curves, and timeless aesthetics. It is clear that The Egg™ is still modern in every sense that this piece cannot go out of style with its true elegance. It has a place in every home, for future generations to come.
