on’t forget Fathers Day on 19th June. We had a very happy mother on Mother's day. For a surprise we treated her to a fabulous new hairdo at Nikki Charls Salon, she was absolutely delighted with the result - a total 'New Look' and THEN a meal at Bunkers Bistro in Conwy Old Rd, Penmaenmawr, which also turned out to be a really lovely day and a wonderful meal. They have a great bookshelf there where you can donate or buy books really cheaply and the money all goes to Happy Faces Charity for deprived children in Wales.

LLANDUDNO
Llandudno, Queen of the Welsh Resorts
L
LANDUDNO is now the largest seaside resort in Wales, and lies on a flat land between the Welsh mainland and the Great Orme peninsula. Modern Llandudno takes its name from the ancient parish of Saint Tudno but also encompasses several neighbouring townships and districts including Craig-y-Don, Llanrhos, and Penrhyn Bay. Also nearby is the small town and marina of Deganwy and these last four are in the traditional parish of Llanrhos. Today, Deganwy and Llandudno Junction are part of the town community of Conwy even though they are across the river from Conwy and linked to Conwy only by a causeway and a bridge. Llandudno Bay and the North Shore This wide sweep of sand, shingle and rock extends two miles in a graceful curve between the headlands of the Great Orme and the Little Orme. For most of the distance on Llandudno’s North Shore there is a wide curving Victorian promenade separated from the roadway by a strip of garden. The road, collectively known as The Parade, has a different name for each block and it is on these parades and crescents that many of Llandudno’s hotels are built. Near the centre of the bay is the North Wales Theatre and next to it The North Wales Conference Centre. The Llandudno Yacht Club and a roundabout mark the end of this section of The Parade and beyond are more hotels and guest houses but they are in the township of Craig-y-Don. Llandudno Pier The award-winning pier with it’s many attractions is on the North Shore; it was built in 1878, and is 1,234 feet (376 m) in length and a Grade II listed building. It was extended in 1884 thus increasing its length to 2,295 feet (700 m). In the summer, Professor Codman’s Punch and Judy show (established in 1860) can be found on the promenade near the entrance to the Pier. Great Orme This great limestone headland has many attractions for the tourist including the Great Orme Tramway that takes tourists effortlessly to the summit. Happy Valley The Happy Valley, a former quarry, was the gift of Lord Mostyn to the town in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. The area was landscaped and developed as gardens, two miniature golf courses, a putting green, a popular open air theatre and extensive lawns. The ceremonies connected with the Welsh National Eisteddfod were held there in 1896 and again in 1963. In June 1969, The Great Orme Cabin Lift, a modern alternative to the tramway, was opened with its base station adjacent to the open air theatre. The distance to the summit is just over one mile and the four-seater cabins travel at six m.p.h. on a continuous steel cable over two miles long. It is the longest single stage cabin lift in Britain and the longest span between pylons is over 1,000 feet. The popularity of the ‘Happy
Yes Mag Monday 11thv2.indd 6
Valley Entertainers’ open air theatre having declined, the theatre closed in 1985 and likewise the two miniature golf courses closed and were converted in 1987 to create a 280 metre artificial ski slope and toboggan run. The gardens were extensively restored as part of the resort’s millennium celebrations and remain a major attraction. Marine Drive The first route round the perimeter of the Great Orme was a footpath constructed in 1858. In 1872 the Great Ormes Head Marine Drive Co. Ltd. was formed to turn the path into a carriage road. Following bankruptcy, a second company completed the road in 1878. The four mile drive (it is one way only) starts at the foot of the Happy Valley. After about one and a half miles, a side road leads to St. Tudno’s Church, the Great Orme Bronze Age Copper Mine, and the Summit of the Great Orme. But, continuing on the Marine Drive one passes the Great Orme Lighthouse (no longer operational) and at the half way point the ‘Rest and be thankful’ Café is very popular with both walkers and motorists. West Shore The West Shore is the quiet beach on the estuary of the River Conwy. It was here at Pen Morfa that Alice Liddell (of Alice in Wonderland fame) spent the long summer holidays of her childhood from 1862 to 1871. Running behind the promenade is Mostyn Street leading to Mostyn Broadway and then Mostyn Avenue. These are the main shopping streets of Llandudno and Craig-y-Don. Mostyn Street accommodates the high street shops, the major high street banks and building societies, two churches, amusement arcades and the town public library. The latter is the starting point for the Town Trail, a carefully planned walk that facilitates viewing Llandudno in a historical perspective. Victorian Extravaganza Every year in May Bank Holiday weekend, Llandudno has a three-day Victorian Carnival and Mostyn Street becomes a funfair. Madoc Street and Gloddaeth Street and the Promenade become part of the route each day of a mid-day carnival parade. The Bodafon Farm fields become the location of a Festival of Transport for the weekend. Alice in Wonderland Llandudno has a link with Lewis Carroll; because the family of the “real Alice” regularly spent holidays at their holiday-home Penmorfa, later the Gogarth Abbey Hotel and recently the Penmorfa Hotel (destroyed 2009, ignoring public protest) on the West Shore of Llandudno. It’s also said that part of the book was written at the St Georges Hotel In Llandudno Venue Cymru The North Wales Theatre, Arena and Conference Centre, built in 1994, extended in 2006 and renamed “Venue Cymru” is located near the centre of the promenade on Penrhyn Crescent. It is noted for its productions of opera, orchestral concerts, ballet, musical theatre, drama, circus, ice shows and pantomimes. Llandudno Lifeboat Llandudno is unique within the United Kingdom in that its lifeboat station is located inland, allowing it to launch with equal facility from either the West Shore or the North Shore as needed. Llandudno’s active volunteer crews are called out more than ever with the rapidly increasing numbers of small pleasure craft sailing in coastal waters. The Llandudno Lifeboat is normally on display on the promenade every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday from May until October. From Wikapedia Encyclopaedia

GARDENING Balconies & Terraces
F
or the natural optimists amongst you, who see a lack of garden space as no brake on your desire to grow plants, a balcony is a real asset. Sure, you have to be certain that it is strong enough to bear a load (and that probably means asking an expert) but, once that’s established, it is remarkable what gardening impulses you can indulge. There are two things you need to get right: suiting your plants and containers to the site aspect and the climatic conditions, and taking account of the fact that the balcony may well be in view from where you sit or work. Painting your sitting room in eau-denil, then putting orange and red-flowered cannas on the balcony may not have quite the required effect. On the other hand, greenleaved ferns and variegated hostas might be just the thing to give your interior scheme added conviction. If your balcony or terrace faces south or west, you are best off growing pots of Mediterranean sub-shrubs, like lavender, rosemary, santolina and cistus, which are used to such conditions, as well as trailing drought-tolerant ivy-leaved pelargoniums. Plenty of springflowering bulbs such as crocuses, daffodils, and tulips, are a must. If shady, these can be substituted by snowdrops, aconites and September-flowering Cyclamen hederifolium, and shade-tolerant perennials, with good foliage, such as epimediums, herbaceous geraniums and coloured-leaved heucheras.
All these promote an atmosphere of restrained prettiness but, for something with a rather more exotic feel, you might try cordylines, agaves, the smaller bamboos, yuccas, and other large-leaved, exuberant, but drought-tolerant, foliage plants. Deciduous plants, especially shrubs, have the advantage of not resisting the wind much in winter. In a more sheltered place, evergreens have their place in protecting privacy, filtering wind and giving some muted colour in winter. As for tiny yards or patios, as long as you leave just enough space for access or for sitting out, you can cram the rest with pots of every kind. They often look best in a cluster of different shapes, sizes and materials. On a balcony, terracotta coloured plastic pots are best but, at ground level, pots can be as heavy as you like. You can be more adventurous in your planting, too, since you won’t be faced with the problem of wind exposure. If the yard is a suntrap, alpines and small bearded irises come in a positive rainbow of colours in May, with colourful, vertically-growing plants, like crocosmias and the purple-pinkflowered Verbena bonariensis, to follow. Or you might prefer to go for one or two dwarf or slow-growing trees or shrubs, such as a witch hazel (Hamamelis) or Japanese maple (Acer). Watering is crucial. If you live in a hosepipe ban area line the inside of summer pots with polythene, into which you have made a number of holes, before putting in the compost; this will slow down the rate of water loss. Use ‘grey water’ from the kitchen and bathroom. And put a layer of grit on top, after the plants go in, to hinder evaporation. If you have an outside tap and no ban, use a simple drip irrigation system for your pots. One skill you may find it useful to learn is the art of pruning, since plants often outgrow their space eventually. If you cut back your deciduous shrubs after flowering, and evergreen ones in the spring, it is surprising what you can cram into the smallest space.... Ursula Buchan

Kitchens Although planning, buying and installing a new kitchen is an expensive and time consuming process, it can make a huge difference to the quality of your home life. The kitchen is often the heart of the home with the room being a natural draw with its warmth and comforting smells. This means that people spend a lot of time in the kitchen so it is well worth the investment. It is also the one room that can really add value if you decide to sell your house – or indeed, if it’s looking tatty, devalue your property. Planning is the most crucial part of buying a new kitchen, so spend a lot of time and effort on this. Base this planning on how you use your kitchen now, and how you want to use it after the remodelling. What irritates you about the layout of your current kitchen? List the main activities that happen in your kitchen. What appliances do you want? And don’t forget the amount of space required to store all your stuff. Certain features usually cannot be altered without considerable cost: windows, doors, plumbing, pipework and services such as gas and electricity should stay the same. Discuss the design with your family – they may come up with new ideas. Whilst it will be fabulous once done, there’s no denying it will be an upheaval for a few weeks. It really is worth minimising the stress by choosing a company that is able to plan, design and install your new kitchen.

Skin At last! The weather has warmed up and we can shed our winter layers and expose our bodies to the fresh air. Only, all these winter months with no natural light and under layers of clothes may have left your skin looking dull and dry. This needs more than a quick rub of body lotion. Firstly of all, you do need to exfoliate. Your body sheds skin cells all the time, but without some friction to remove them, many dead cells will just cling to the surface. Body scrubs are aplenty in your nearest chemist or supermarket, along with body brushes. Allow yourself a good 10 to 15 minutes in the shower or for even better results book yourself in with your beautician.
On the subject of beauticians, as you move down your body it definitely becomes easier and more efficient to ask someone else to help with the skin maintenance. You can shave the hair off your legs, but it’ll be much smoother – and last longer – if you wax, particularly if someone else is doing it for you and has a better view of what needs doing. Likewise with your feet; unless you are a contortionist, a home pedicure is always going to be a tedious and backaching job. Having prepared the surface, a good moisturiser will not only make your skin glow, but will immediately make you feel more summery. If you are naturally very pale, buy a body lotion that also offers a light selftanning ingredient.

HEALTH
LATE ONSET DIABETES
L
ate Onset (or Type 2) diabetes is a serious but controllable disease. There is a strong genetic link and any individual having a parent with the condition is at risk, significantly more so if both parents are sufferers. However, other factors will elevate this risk and even cause diabetes without the genetic factor. Of particular note is that of obesity, with around 55% of patients being obese when diagnosed. A sedentary lifestyle, a poor diet and high blood pressure can increase the likelihood of becoming diabetic. The symptoms are common to both early and late onset diabetes but typically appear much more slowly with type 2. Classic symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue and weight loss. Prevention, of course, is better than cure and if you know that several of the risk factors apply to you, action sooner rather than later can make a difference. Unfortunately ageing is an additional cause so the longer you leave it the greater the possibility of developing a problem later on. However if you do develop diabetes, good management of the condition is critical to your longevity and quality of life. Without management the condition can have serious health consequences including heart disease, kidney failure, blindness and a stroke. Management, particularly in the early stages, is by eating a healthy diet, increasing exercise and monitoring your blood glucose level. It is only if the condition worsens that you will need to take insulin, or prescribed medication.

Most Profitable Cars
CAR
companies turn over billions of pounds every year and bank millions in profits – but which cars are the most profitable? It’s a question we’ve been pondering for some time. All car manufacturers can flog a car, but what makes the difference between a bumper profit margin and a tiny one? Well, we asked a host of industry experts, professors and insiders to help us come up with this list. They told us cutting costs and maximising returns in the automotive world is all about sharing expertise and platforms – do that and car manufacturers can dramatically increase their profits. Here are some of the cars that our experts believe are real cash cows for their makers.
BMW 3-Series
It’s the salesman’s mile-muncher, but its premium price and relatively cheap production costs mark the 3-Series out as a winner for the marque. Our experts said it was mostly down to excellent cost control, the fact cars are often highly specified and usually sold for a premium over similar-sized cars like the Ford Mondeo.
McLaren MP4-12C
One of the shock cars to emerge from our research was the new McLaren. Although development costs are high, the actual car is relatively inexpensive to make in relation to the high retail price. Our experts said the carbon chassis could be the cheapest to produce ever while many physical components have been replaced by more cost-effective electronics. If they sell the numbers forecast at between £160-170k it could be one of the most profitable cars ever!
Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport benefits from all factors that make a model profitable: It’s based on an existing chassis (Defender) which keeps build costs low. It’s sold for a premium with lots of added extras. And it’s been kept on sale for a long period of time without a major redesign. All these add up to a holy grail in terms of profitability.
VW Golf
Described by our experts as ‘the daddy’ of platform sharing, VW isn’t one of the most profitable makers without good reason! The Golf is responsible for two million units a year and currently provides underpinnings for huge array of Seat, Audi, Skoda and other VW models. Many are sold for premium but cost no more to make, adding a healthy balance to VW’s bottom line every year.
a a
Aston Martin Cygnet
Ok, we know this hasn’t arrived yet, but the baby Aston has the potential to be a real profit centre for the maker. Essentially rebadging a Toyota iQ and charging £30k-plus for it – and that’s before buyers have shelled out on extras – could spell happy times for the marque. However, despite its potential, our experts warned this would only be possible if buyers like it…
Ford Transit
It’s not just cars that add substantially to a manufacturer’s bottom lines – vans do too! The Ford Transit is sold in markets around the world and our experts believe it is one of the most profitable vehicles on sale Europe. Low production costs and decent volumes help keep the cash flowing for the Blue Oval.

Can You Help - St David's Hospice BENGAL DYNASTY who Celebrate 24 years of opening host a Charity Night to raise Money for St David’s Hospice and the staff at
Magazine where there to support the evening. ince 2004 when then the hospice expanded the services it offers to the terminally ill, and now, in response to requests from patients and their families, wants to open more palliative care beds and provide more private rooms, while also providing a training facility in end-of-life care not just for its own staff, but staff from the NHS and private care homes. To do this it’s estimated it will need to raise somewhere in the region of £1m. Hospice chairman Gladys Harrison said: “We are expanding and developing our services in response to need. We want to take the number of palliative care beds we have from 11 to 14 and to do away with a four-bed ward and replace it with private rooms. Since the hospice opened 11 years ago, expectations have changed. Wards were the norm then, but the feedback we’ve been getting from patients and their families is that they would like a greater degree of privacy and this is what we wish to provide.”
S
This will entail building an extension to the premises and the hospice hopes to invite tenders for the work in September. The £1m is in addition to the £1.7m that has to be found to meet the hospice’s annual clinical running costs. It only receives 25% towards these from the Assembly Government and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and relies on donations, legacies and fundraising efforts, as well as its charity shops and weekly lottery, for the remainder. “We’ve had fantastic support from the people of North West Wales and in return we strive to offer the highest quality end-of-life care that we can. Our aim is for people to live out their lives with dignity with their families and friends with them. The demand for our service increases all the time. “We offer support and care to people with a range of conditions, not just cancer, but also motor neurone disease and heart and kidney disease. We also offer help to their families through what can be very difficult times. “People might not know that 40% of our patients go home after they have had respite care here which allows their carers to have a break,” explained Mr Davies. The hospice knows that finding the additional money to build the extension will be a tall order. Bengal Dynasty, Llandudno host many Charity Nights throughout the year for worthy local causes and last night was the turn of St David’s Hospice. It was attended by the Lady Mayor Cllr Ann Yates. Who was ‘Out on Bail’ after being arrested for trying to sell the Mayoral Chain? She is hoping her friends and colleagues will support her in raising money for St David’s Hospice by raising enough money for her release! The event was also attended by a number of ex-Mayors and dignitaries from the Conwy Area. The ex Mayor of Colwyn Bay Cllr Abdul Mukith Khan remarked on the many unsung heroes in our community who selflessly do so much for others. We appreciate them very much. Tech For The Great Outdoors Gadgets to take with you when you’re out and about After a pretty terrible winter, the longer days and warmer temperatures mean most of us can’t wait to get out of the house - and technology is happy to come with us. Whether you’re an explorer or just fancy listening to your iPod in the garden, there are plenty of high-tech ways to enjoy the great outdoors.
gps One of the most interesting kinds of outdoor technology is GPS, the global positioning system that tells your sat-nav where you are. Portable GPS units such as Garmin’s Etrex H (around £70) enable a new kind of sport, called Geocaching. It’s a kind of electronic treasure hunt: on sites such as Geocaching.com you can discover co-ordinates of interesting things or secret stashes. Plug the co-ordinates into your portable GPS system and it tells you how to get there. It’s a great way to discover hidden historical gems or just really interesting walks that others have created for you. If you like the sound of geocaching and you own a smartphone there are several GPSenabled smartphone apps, so for example iPhone users can pick up Groundspeak’s Geocaching for just £5.99.
record the experience If you’d like to record the rough and tumble of your outdoor adventures, the GoPro Helmet Hero camera (£129 from Wilkinson.co.uk) can be mounted on a cycling helmet or other outdoor kit for hands-free snapping. There are also plenty of rugged cameras that can handle lumps and bumps, bashes and splashes: Kodak’s PlaySport camcorder (around £94) and Toshiba’s Camileo BW10 can both shoot HD video, and they’re waterproof to 2m (Toshiba) and 3m (Kodak), making them immune to splashes and rain. Please mention
Yes Mag Monday 11thv2.indd 45
power One of the problems with exploring the great outdoors is that there aren’t many power sockets - and some gadgets can run out of power pretty quickly. Despite the UK’s dire weather the sun pumps out enough power to make solar chargers a sensible option, and firms such as Power Traveller (www.powertraveller. com) offer everything from solar-powered phone chargers (from about £19) and gadget power supplies (from £29) to the £140 Solargorilla, which is powerful enough to charge laptop computers. Unfortunately that kind of power requires a fairly big solar panel, and the Solargorilla does look rather like a George Foreman grill. If you’d rather enjoy the outdoors in a more relaxed way, technology can help there too. Solar powered speakers (around £40 from NigelsEcostore.com) enable you to take your music with you, while the rechargeable Ion iPA03 Block Rocker (£159 from Play.com) is loud enough to stun passing birds. Alternatively, a pair of AQSound wireless speakers (£89.95 from Superfi.co.uk) enable you to transmit music from your hi-fi or other home audio system and listen to it outside without having to take any kit out with you.
relax You can even get an outdoor TV: sites such as Proof Vision (www.proofvision. co.uk) will happily sell you a TV designed for outdoor use, although inevitably such sets are pricey: expect to pay around £820 for a 19-inch model. They’re clever, though, and they enable you to watch EastEnders while robots get on with the chores: the Robomow RL550 robotic lawnmower (£1,099 from Greenfingers. com) will mow the lawn while you relax.

Travel - Turkey
At over 1000 metres, the little town of Ürgüp is a convenient place to stay, with its share of fairy chimneys, its rock-hewn houses turned into cave hotels and on the doorstep, a whole flotilla of hot air balloons offering the ride of a lifetime. Every morning, they rise above Red Valley, packed with wide-eyed tourists, gliding high above it all or dipping down for a close-up view. Back on land, the astonishing moonscape stretches as far as you can see, Pigeon Valley, Hunters Valley, Uchisar, and when you reach the best viewpoints, cameras clicking all around, you almost forget to browse the souvenir stalls brimming with pottery, turquoise and pashmina. But there is more to this land than caves and fairy chimneys.
Cappadocia
F
ramed by the Taurus mountains to the south, the high plateau of Cappadocia lies in central Turkey, a land bristling with volcanic features, known as ‘fairy chimneys’, and carved with ancient underground cities and rock churches.
Not so far away among the vineyards, the Göreme Open Air Museum preserves some of Cappadocia’s finest rock-cut monasteries and churches, dating back to the early days of Christianity. Footpaths and steps lead you from one chapel to the next where wall paintings and frescoes in earthy tones depict scenes from the New Testament, or St Theodore and St George slaying the dragon. Most decorations are from the 11th to 13th centuries but there are earlier examples.
For early Christians and others who farmed the surrounding land, living underground was safe, cool in summer, warm in winter and whenever you needed extra space, you could just dig another room in the relatively soft stone. Stables were near the top, accessed down a ramp, while further down was a network of communal kitchens, sleeping quarters, stores, niches for oil lamps, wine cellars and chapels. The cities ran seven floors deep, often more, with air shafts, wells and millstones (complete with peepholes) which could block the tunnels in time of danger. Many such cities remain undiscovered but 36 have been identified, a few partially opened to visitors who file through narrow passageways, stooping right down at times with the occasional moment of panic but rarely a chance to turn back. The largest city is Kaymakli, the deepest Derinkuyu. Both are on the tourist trail. Meanwhile above ground, nature has shaped the most fantastic fairyland, eroding the soft tufa layer left by eruptions to uncover tall columns of hard rock marching through the countryside like a giant army. Some, capped with basalt, look like overgrown mushrooms, others come to a point like pixies’ hats, many are pierced with the dark holes of troglodyte dwellings. Large or small, these so-called fairy chimneys come in twos or threes, or family-sized groups, while here and there sculpted ridges cling to curving slopes the colour of cappuccino. Please mention
Yes Mag Monday 11thv2.indd 57
Carved into rock or cliff, every chapel has a story to tell. Sandals is named after mysterious footprints, the Dark Church was a pigeon house, and you find a Snake Church, home of the dragon, an Apple Church, once near an orchard, Santa Barbara, where red lines were drawn on the vault to imitate brick, and the beautifully restored Tokali, with gleaming lapis lazuli in its newer section. At the entrance to the complex, the Nunnery rises on several floors, church and cells cut into the towering rock and just like in the underground cities, connected by tunnels with millstone doors. Cappadocia is indeed like nowhere else in Turkey, equally stunning above and underground. Solange Hando

1. Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. 2. Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts. 3. Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts. 4. Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.
