A gift to the Annual Scholarship Fund supports every aspect of a student's experience, providing opportunities for learning as well as the ability for the Yeshivah to be responsive to emerging opportunities and challenges. Gifts to this fund make an immediate difference in the lives of students and faculty, as donations are directed to where the need is the greatest and are an important complement to our Capital and Endowment Campaigns. Annual Scholarship Fund donations turn concepts into actions and are critical in achieving our mission of academic excellence. Thanks to our donors’ generosity the Annual Scholarship Funds raises $2,296,543 which contributes to the education of 835 students, representing 441 families, who receive tuition assistance. Your continued commitment affords us the opportunity to provide a meaningful YOF experience for all students in our Yeshivah. We are pleased to announce new donor recognition levels that acknowledge the important role of every community member in advancing our mission. The Menu of Opportunities, which is outlined in this publication, is filled with many exciting and robust offerings, and will showcase the benefits of each donation level.

EVERY GIFT IS MEANINGFUL. EVERY GIFT STRENGTHENS. 3

WHY I GIVE: “All of us must come together to make a philanthropic impact so that we can keep the cost of tuition affordable to all, but also maintain our high standard of excellence in education. To impact the future, we need to act now, and we are asking our community to partner with us in this endeavor. Be part of the change and take a stand in making the Yeshivah of Flatbush the best it has ever been, for many generations to come.”

HIGH SCHOOL TORAH STUDIES $100,000

At the Yeshivah of Flatbush we create an environment encouraging a love of Torah and Mitzvot, a respect for fellow Jews and all of Hashem’s creations, a love for learning Hebrew, and a deep connection with Israel. Through a fully immersive Judaic Studies curriculum that includes our various departments of Tanach, Talmud, Halakhah, Gemara and Jewish History, our goal is to inspire our students to understand the depth and nuance involved in living a Jewish life. In addition, the newly established “Inquiry Bet Midrash Program” ultimately guides students on their path to becoming virtuous and devoted Bnai and Bnot Yisrael. 6

The Elementary School years at Yeshivah of Flatbush play a formative role in the religious growth and development of our students. Our Judaic Studies curriculum is designed to provide our students with a thorough Torah education – an education that will prepare them to thrive as Torah-committed Jews in our complex and globalized world. Classroom learning and extracurricular experiences enhance and challenge students to grow through a deep understanding of Torah, building strong connections with Halakhah as well as meaningful relationships with mentors and role models. 7

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEFILLAH PROGRAM

DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF RALPH J. HARARY A”H

Tefillah is an integral aspect of the Yeshivah of Flatbush experience that starts in our Early Childhood program. Our minyanim, both Ashkenazic and Sephardic, are structured to create the proper atmosphere for the service of Hashem. From the moment they receive their first siddur in a special first grade chagigah, students are introduced to the parts of the Tefilot according to their level. The Lower and Middle School Tefillah and Q’eriah program, coordinated by Mr. Morris Varon and Mrs. Sally Gross, strives to teach students how to accurately comprehend and pronounce the pesukim. The program aims to have students read the unique portions of the Tefillah found in the siddur and other classical Jewish texts fluently and clearly. The students feel accomplished and connected to the siddur in front of them.

The mission of the Tanach department is to create an environment in which our students can experience the unparalleled truth, beauty and complexity of the Torah while developing the reading and analytical skills they will need to understand the Torah independently. Our curriculum concentrates on sections of the Hamisha Humshei Torah during the first semester and portions of Nevi’im and Ketuvim during the second semester. Throughout all of our lessons, we connect the Torah’s teachings to core aspects of Jewish thought and philosophy. Ultimately, we want our students to see the Torah as the lens through which all aspects of life can be navigated and understood.

Our curriculum is designed to provide our students with a thorough Torah education – an education that will prepare them to thrive as devoted Jews in our complex and globalized world. HIGH SCHOOL HALAKHAH DEPARTMENT

$36,000

Halakhah is education for Jewish living. Each year we familiarize students with key themes, concepts, terms, and personalities in Halakhah and demonstrate the practical aspects of Judaism including the laws of prayer, Shabbat observance, kashrut, marriage, and tzedakah. We inspire our students to understand the distinctions involved in living a full Jewish life and use that to guide them in their everyday actions and lifelong decisions.

The Elementary School Halakhah curriculum is twofold: one part addresses the laws and customs of the Jewish holidays; the second part addresses specific areas of Jewish law that students experience routinely such as Kashrut, Shabbat, and Tefilah. Our students study both Ashkenazic and Sephardic laws and customs for everyday mitzvot, Shabbat, berachot, Jewish holidays, and more. We also introduce students to units on financial integrity and honesty in everyday life.

$36,000

Our Lashon curriculum is built around the goal of teaching and facilitating the students to be conversant and “at home” with both classical and modern Hebrew. Vocabulary and grammar units are chosen that reflect the words and skills necessary to study Tanach together with the ability to read and converse in modern Hebrew. Since the Yeshivah of Flatbush is one of the only Ivrit B’Ivrit schools, the lessons learned in Lashon class enable our students to learn their other subjects in Ivrit with confidence.

Our strong and innovative Torah B’Ivrit Studies curricula are central to our mission of developing generations of committed Jews whose skills in Lashon and understanding of original sources enable them to pursue study and observance throughout their lives. The language of instruction in all Torah studies classes is in Hebrew. We emphasize both accuracy and fluency in all elements of Hebrew: reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, written expression and oral expression. We enhance our Hebrew programs with technology programs created by our staff and iTalAm (a Judaic Studies Interactive Software program).

KINDERGARTEN SCIENCE FAIR

EARLY CHILDHOOD PKRE READING IN PAJAMAS

$26,000

DEDICATED BY TERRY AND IKE SILVERA

The Kindergarten Science Fair is an exciting, highly anticipated event where our classrooms are transformed into various habitats. Parents join their children as they learn about climate, animals, mammals and more through interactive activities. Once they complete their classroom presentations, students venture from classroom to classroom learning interesting facts from their peers. As the students make their rounds, they enjoy creating their own jungle, searching for pollution, and making sand art.

The Early Childhood Reading in Pajamas program instills a joy and love for literacy and reading. Students and parents participate in theme-andbook-related activities, gather together on the carpet, and enjoy discussions on the different reading strategies to practice at home. Teachers then read a theme-related book to the children and the evening concludes with themed snacks. Each child receives a special picture book and character item to take home. The most important takeaway of the evening is that reading aloud to a child is one of the single most important things a parent can do.

The Phoenix is the school newspaper for Yeshivah of Flatbush Joel Braverman High School. Written entirely by students, it is published several times per year. Each issue features in-depth reporting on school news, upcoming events, sports, entertainment, divrei Torah and more. Contributing to The Phoenix helps students hone their writing, editorial and organizational skills. The Phoenix gives students the opportunity to voice their opinions maturely in an appropriate forum and showcase their writing, all under the guidance of an experienced professional journalist.

The Names, Not Numbers© program, created by educator Ms. Tova Fish-Rosenberg, is a unique intergenerational approach to Holocaust education that has connected 2,000 survivors and WWII veterans with more than 6,000 students worldwide. Every year, 30 middle school students listen to the tragic but inspiring stories of six Holocaust survivors and learn how to interview and film them for a documentary. Over 300 people attended the screening of the movie at the Yeshivah - a moving testimony that will last forever.

FAMILY SHABBATON

YOM HA’ATZMAUT CELEBRATIONS

DEDICATED BY HADDAD BRANDS FAMILY FOUNDATION

DEDICATED BY THE MAMIYE FAMILY

Yeshivah of Flatbush holds a family Shabbaton in the fall with our “Flatbush Family” at the Elementary School. The Shabbat program brings together more than 75 families, totaling 450 parents and children from within the Flatbush community. Minyan is run by our own superstars – the students. They are both the chazanim and also read from the Torah. Our Shabbaton caters to all ages and is filled with good food, classes, singing and games. After Shabbat, the fun and excitement continue with Rikkudim. The Shabbaton gives the opportunity to experience the beauty of Shabbat with family, to grow through intimate discussions, and to inspire and be inspired by our second family, the Yeshivah of Flatbush.

At Yeshivah of Flatbush, teaching our students to love, support and defend the State of Israel is central to our school’s mission. On Israel’s Independence Day we have multiple celebrations and activities for the entirety of the school that foster a deep relationship with our homeland. Programs included ceremonies, communal prayers, concerts and chesed projects. YOF students are completely immersed in many other programs throughout the year that celebrate and reflect on Israel’s accomplishments, which culminate in this special day where alumni, parents and the larger community are invited to participate.

ARCHON SERVICE SOCIETY ASSEMBLY

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION CEREMONY

DEDICATED BY THE HANAN FAMILY

Jewish tradition places great significance on community service. Membership in The Archon Service Society Assembly displays a personal commitment to the Yeshivah through exceptional participation in school service, activities and programs. Continuing the legacy of hundreds of our alumni since 1956, only selected students are inducted into the Society every year at a ceremony in the Khezrie Auditorium attended by the students, faculty and parents.

Select JBHS students are honored for their academic excellence in the annual National Honor Society Induction Exercises. Several awards are given, among them the Haramati Ahavat Yisrael Award. Membership in the National Honor Society signifies a personal commitment to excellence in character, scholarship, service and commitment to the Yeshivah’s values.

1ST GRADE SIDDUR PARTY

2ND GRADE CHUMASH PARTY

$26,000

$26,000

Our first and second graders celebrate the important milestones of receiving their first Siddurim and Chumashim in memorable ceremonies. Within both programs, parents, grandparents, teachers and principals gather in our beautifully decorated auditorium to celebrate. Our Siddur ceremony includes a blend of both Sephardic and Ashkenaz tefillah melodies and demonstrates how well the students are ready for this significant milestone. In our Chumash ceremony, students sing songs emphasizing how the Torah has been passed down from generation to generation. The fathers in each class join together to hold up a talit and give the children a beracha. Classes also sing a special song showing appreciation for their mothers, presenting them with a rose. 48

5TH GRADE MELAVA MALKA $26,000

The 5th Grade Melava Malka is an annual program held in memory of a beloved teacher and colleague, Chava Schneerson, Z”L. The program begins with a beautiful Havdala ceremony and a Dvar Torah presented by our students. The fifth graders, accompanied by soloists, sing songs in honor of Shabbat. Students are reminded about the importance of the Flatbush Five initiative and poems are recited by our students. The Personal Hero Award, given to an individual chosen from our community, is presented to a family member of outstanding character and commitment to the values of the Torah, Derech Eretz, Midot Tovot and the Flatbush Five. Two students from each 5th grade class are then awarded with the Derech Eretz and Midot Tovot Awards. The evening concludes with Israeli dances and a beautiful kumzitz.

NAOMI HOULLOU A”H LADIES AUXILIARY WELCOME BACK CARNIVAL DEDICATED BY STEVEN MONTAGUE IN HONOR OF HIS WIFE JULIE

The Naomi Houllou A”H Ladies Auxiliary jump starts our school year with our annual Back to School Carnival. East 10th street is decorated with rides and games and our upbeat music keeps the day lively. Families and friends attend together to enjoy this beautiful and exciting day.

50

GRANDPARENTS' DAY $26,000

Our Nursery students and their grandparents are treated to an unforgettable morning for Grandparents’ Day. The children excitedly get to show their grandparents their classrooms, introduce them to their teachers, and work on a project together. The children and grandparents feast on a delectable spread while chatting and bonding. The highlights of the morning are the sweet songs the students sing about their grandparents. It is so special to see the audience beaming with pride at their little stars on stage. The grandparents and grandchildren leave school with prizes in their hands and smiles on their faces.

DADS DO TEFILLAH $26,000

Every year, the Elementary School is filled with excitement as grandfathers, uncles, big brothers and fathers gather in their children’s designated tefillah locations for a morning of tefillah and pizmonim. The special guests visit classrooms and do a Tefillah-related activity, then enjoy breakfast and choir performances in the auditorium. 51

WHY I GIVE: “I give to the Annual Scholarship Fund because I want to ensure that the school which has been in existence for almost 100 years will continue to thrive for the next 100 years. As an alumnus as well as a parent of a Flatbush student, I know that my donation gives our students a chance to experience this world class education that they will use for the rest of their lives”.

JOE R. TAWIL (ES ‘90, HS ‘94) ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE CO-CHAIR

52

THIS IS MY WHY: “When I was in school, I watched both my grandfather and parents give back to the greater Jewish community. Inspired by their work, I became passionate about education. I truly believe that from our two-year-olds to our Seniors in high school, the Yeshivah of Flatbush provides the best education. I believe that our collective work changes the lives of countless children, who otherwise would not be able to afford a Yeshivah education.” RALPH S. SHAMAH (ES ‘89, HS ‘93) ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE CO-CHAIR
