TE EAT CHOCOLA T? TO LOSE WEIGH This sounds too good to be true but it’s a new trend that is showing promising results. Eating a small piece of dark chocolate 20 minutes before meals or 5 minutes after meals can decrease your appetite by up to 50%. Dark chocolate can curb your craving for sweet, salty and fatty foods; making you less likely to choose the unhealthy stuff. Dark chocolate does more than that – it can reduce your chances of diabetes as well. In a study done by an Italian university, people who ate a candy bar’s worth of dark chocolate for fifteen days in a row showed a decrease of almost 50% in their potential for insulin resistance.

Did you know that ginger is one of the healthiest (and tastiest) spices on the planet? Pregnant women know all about ginger due to its ability to treat morning sickness but it goes much further than that! Ginger cures any type of nausea – from a hangover to motion sickness, and has some very beneficial pain relieving properties as well. Ginger can help cure a headache, menstrual cramps, even muscle pain and soreness if you overdid it a bit in the gym yesterday.

IT'S GINGER-MAZING!
When it comes to working out, whether at home or in the gym, keep it short and sweet. Don’t trudge away for hours, making you feel unmotivated and unable to find the time. Get the same results in a shorter time by increasing your intensity. High-intensity interval training will burn fat even faster than going along at the same pace. Try multi-tasking in your workouts to effectively work a few different muscle groups at the same time. Remember to eat a good high protein snack before your workout to fuel your body and don’t forget to refill your water bottle before you start so you can stay hydrated.

Toxic Relationships TACKLING
By: Andrea Kellerman
Many people are in unhealthy relationships without realizing it. Some might have a toxic relationship at home with a partner, child, parent or sibling – some might have a bad relationship with colleagues or their boss. It is important to understand what an unhealthy relationship entails, why we are in unhealthy relationships and how we can change this.
balancing act
When things go wrong, they always feel that it is someone else’s fault.
2
They are highly sensitive to things done to them, but are blind to the things they do to others.
3
Feeling that they are the victims – bad things happen to them but in their view, their poor choices play no part.
4
Their relationships are often short lived.
These are only a few signs that someone is emotionally immature. While you may have compassion for such people, it’s important that you recognize that you are dealing with someone with emotional issues. It is not always you who is at fault or who should take the blame. You may feel that you can fix this person or the situation. But in reality, the issues are often deeply seeded, and you may find it highly challenging to have a fair and balanced relationship, work relationship or friendship with someone who is emotionally immature.
1
Withdrawing/avoiding: Staying away from issues and people that can cause problems and conflict.
2
Competing/forcing: Being over-powering and forcing others to accept your point of view.
3
Accommodating/smoothing: Wanting to be liked and keeping the peace so that no one feels hurt.
4
Compromising/sharing: Seeking solutions where both sides give up parts of their goals.
5
Collaborating/problem-solving: Trying to resolve conflicts in a way that both sides are happy with and can achieve their goals.
Which one do you choose? Is it the best way to solve your conflicts? If not, have you asked yourself why you are avoiding conflicts, not facing them head on or feel irritated and angry in

THE TYPES OF DIFFERENT BEHAVIOURS PEOPLE USE WHEN BEING CONFRONTED WITH A CONFLICT INCLUDE:
11
BELOW ARE SOME SIGNS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE:
You need to be able to see this for what it is and set boundaries. This means that you need to be able to stand up for yourself, say “no” if you feel bullied, be assertive and don’t shy away from conflict. I see many people in my practice who dislike conflicts greatly and try to avoid them at all cost. The problem is when avoiding conflicts, we can develop anxiety, sleeping problems and depression because we are not solving those issues and other people who bully us might always get their way.
www.wecarepharmacy.co.za
Often unhealthy relationships are connected to a low emotional maturity of one or both of the people in the relationship, boundary setting issues and conflict management problems. Such relationships can make you feel unhappy, destroy your self-esteem and increase physical and psychological problems as they start to get more and more under your skin. If you are married to or work with someone who is emotionally immature you probably face great challenges in dealing with this person’s moods and behaviours. I am sure you came across a boss, colleague or friend who tends to try to control the world around them rather than to accept it for what it is and work toward positive change. This belief is a strong indicator of self-centeredness or narcissism. Self-centeredness and self-importance are normally traits of children. Children demand special treatment, make little real contributions themselves, and complain that life isn’t meeting their needs. Overcoming this mind-set is a normal and a vital part of growing-up. When those characteristics manifest in an adult, they are indications that that person is not in fact a mature, responsive adult, but rather still reacting out of their self-centred child view. The person may look mature, and have many adult responsibilities, but emotionally, they are still a child. Instead of taking responsibility for how they feel, they expect others in their life to see their points of view. They try to control others, which is something you cannot control! A mature individual does not lose control and succumb to irrational thoughts simply because they haven’t gotten their way. Insecure and emotionally immature people are often bullies and employ many techniques to get their way. Bullies and harassers have the emotional age of a young child and will exhibit temper tantrums, deceit, lying and manipulation, not speaking to you, making you feel that you are not worthy or not including you when you should be part of something to avoid exposure of their true nature and to evade accountability.

conflicting situations? The above listed behaviours can lead to possible negative outcomes and might not get you what you want out of the situation.
THESE NEGATIVE OUTCOMES ARE:
1
Withdrawing: This might mean that you give up on personal goals and relationships.
2
Competing: Others will shy away from you as you are too forceful.
3
Accommodating: You will not achieve your own goals and have self-respect as you put others first.
4
Compromising: Not achieving the goals completely.
Conflict situations are an important aspect of our everyday life. Often, a conflict presents opportunities for improvement and personal growth. In a conflicting situation we need to make sure that we stay calm and assertive. Assertiveness means that we respect ourselves and the other person we are talking to. If the other person is very upset, allow him to vent first. This will take the steam out of the situation. As a second step, show the other person that you understood the point that was made. This does not mean that you agree with him/her, but you signal to them that you understood the frustration and irritation they are going through. This will help them to feel that you understand them and will calm them down. As a last step you can either agree that there has been a mistake made and it will not happen again or, if no mistake was made, you can try to find a solution to the problem to avoid any further unhappiness.
Those steps work very well in most situations. You need to be aware of how you feel about the conflicting topic. If you feel strongly about it, use the above mentioned techniques to get to a solution. If you do not feel strongly about the conflicting situation it is sometimes wise to walk away and leave the situation behind. Being aware of having a toxic relationship at home or at work is the first step to change and feeling happier within yourself. Once you have identified the problem, whether it is emotional immaturity, a problem setting boundaries or not being able to handle conflict well, you can start to work on those issues and implement the above mentioned points. It is important that you feel content, can be your true self and feel in control over your emotions and reactions in life. This is your life and you deserve to be happy! It’s holiday time again! The December holidays are upon us and for most of us this month long break over the festive season is the perfect excuse to get away for a while – which means leaving your house empty. The most ideal scenario would be to have a family member or close friend that you trust stay in your house while you are away. A person best suited for this would be someone who has little responsibility at their own home, such as pets etc., so that they are not leaving their own house vulnerable. If you don’t know anyone who can help you, don’t worry. There are a few things you can do to ensure the safety of your house. These can be divided into three categories: before you go away, right before you leave and while you are away. Before you go away, it is important to contact your security company, if you have one. Inform them that your house will be empty and they should respond to any alarm signals. Ask to have your system tested as well. Don’t wait until the last minute for this; leave enough time to have any repairs done if needed. If you don’t have an alarm system, fake it. Have fake armed response signs made and put them up outside your house. You can also put ‘Beware of the Dog’ signs on your gate, whether you have a dog or not. Leave a few large dog bowls visible outside and thieves won’t dare go inside. Put away any visible ladders or garden equipment that can be used as tools to break in. Before you leave, call your insurance company and make sure what is and
isn’t covered in your policy and that your account is up to date. If anything should happen, you need to know what you can claim and what you can’t. If you are leaving any vehicles at home, contact your tracking company and inform them that you will be away and to respond to any alarm signals. Have your units tested, also giving enough time to have any repairs done if needed. Take any valuable or irreplaceable items to a friend or family member for safekeeping, just in case. Ask a friend or neighbour you can trust to keep an eye on your house. Ask them to water your lawn and plants while you are away, nothing says “The owners aren’t here” like a brown dried out lawn when the neighbours all have perfectly green grass. Ask them to pick up any mail and flyers outside, as a full mailbox is also a signal to burglars. If your car is normally parked outside and will be while you are away, ask your friend to drive it around a few times so that it doesn’t gather dust and cobwebs, which is another sign that nobody’s home. Show your friend how all the doors and windows are locked and fastened and ask them to check every day for signs of tampering. Take your friend around your house and show them what things normally look like so that they can notice if something is different or if anything looks
strange. Take note of things like where any pot plants stay so they will notice if any have been moved; plants around your fence or wall so that they can see if any have been trampled or cut out for any reason and what will and won’t be outside and around the house so that they will know if anything has been left there by strangers. Right before you leave, make sure you have locked and fastened all windows and doors. Don’t rush in your haste to leave, it is worth taking an extra few minutes to make sure it is done right. Arrange a time to give your friend or neighbour your keys, don’t leave them under a mat or somewhere obvious, thieves know where to look. Make sure your alarm system is set properly and that no pets can set it off unnecessarily. While you are away, contact your security company every few days to make sure no signals have been received from your house, especially if you will be away for a long time. Keep in touch with the friend or neighbour you asked to keep an eye on your house so that you know that everything is fine. Remind them of any details they may have forgotten. There are a lot of things to remember but if you make sure to leave your house as secure as possible, the only thing left for you to do is enjoy your holiday.

Smart Festive Finance So how often is it that we can easily decide to take our year-end bonus money and invest it, only to reap the rewards five years from now? Or is it easier to use the money now and actually see where it’s going and just be content that it came and left?
Many people get intimidated when you mention the word 'invest' because they have always believed that the only people who invested were those with money. This is not true, as over the years many companies have developed a variety of options and portfolios which allow anyone – even low income earners – to invest. People have different reasons for investing and as a result will invest differently. Once a person establishes why they want to invest, it is then easier to sit down and look at the best plan to invest in and for advisers this means advising on what will be

suitable for your needs. Besides investments, there are few smart ways to put your end year bonus to good use.
A RAINY DAY FUND
Every budget should have a ‘rainy day’ fund for unexpected expenses like a geyser bursting, car problems or unexpected medical expenses. This would be a perfect place for your bonus or part of your bonus to go as you never know when you might need some extra cash. Most financial experts recommend putting at least 50% of your bonus into a savings account. Also keep in mind that the ideal position to be in is to have three to six month’s salary stashed away in case of emergencies.
MAKE AN INVESTMENT
It’s important to know why you are investing and what you want to achieve in the end. In that way you have an idea of what to
It might be a good idea to pay your school fees in advance, while you have the money. You will normally receive a discount and could end up paying for only ten of the twelve months. So check what discount you can get and consider clearing the school fees deck for the year.

Have a look at what your most expensive debt is (e.g. where you are paying the highest interest) and pay a portion of your bonus to reduce or clear this. It will save interest, shorten the outstanding debt period and free cash up sooner which is being used on debt repayments which you can then channel towards saving. The cumulative effect of a number of debts is going to prevent you enjoying financial freedom.

expect when it’s time to reap your reward at the end of the term. This depends entirely on your needs and affordability. This will also determine whether you invest for the short term, medium term or long term. One option is a lump sum investment. These vary in terms of the investment period which ranges from three to five years or even 10 years depending on your needs. There are portfolios which have a minimum lump sum of R1000, R12 500, R25 000 or even up to R250 000 – once again depending on your needs. Within these lump sum investments, you do get those that have the flexibility of having a certain percentage of the initial consideration accessible in the event of an emergency, whereas the other remaining percentage would remain inaccessible until the minimum term of the investment is complete. Another option to look at is a debit order investment. This is where there is a debit order arrangement of say a minimum amount of R500 per month for the duration of the investment. Then at the end of the term there is an option to withdraw the funds, withdraw only some of the funds or even continue to keep the money in there until such time you feel you’d like to access the funds.

NO-SEW FABRIC GARLAND
DIY WREATH
Items you will need: 1. Wreath frame 2. Ribbon 3. Scissors 4. Wire and wire cutters 5. Pine cones, accent greenery, and evergreen branches
STEP 1: BUNCH GREENERY
Items you will need: 1. Sturdy twine or ribbon 2. Scissors 3. Your choice of scrap fabric cut into strips 4. Ribbon of your choice
Clip your evergreen branches with your wire cutters into short lengths as seen below. Layer about five branches on top of each other and tie your wire around the centre of the bunch. Twist the wire in the back of the bunch to hold the branches together. Attach the branches to the wire frame by twisting the wire around the frame.
STEP 1:
Follow the pattern below or create your own pattern using a variety of widths and textures of ribbon and fabric. Repeat the pattern until your desired length for your garland is reached. We created a short garland fit for a fireplace. You can use these same steps with long strips to create a ribbon backdrop for a larger space
STEP 2: ADD ACCENTS
Add accent greenery and decorative items such as ribbon, box wood, and pine cones as you attach the pine branches to the frame. If you wait until the end to add these items, the accent pieces lay on top of the pine branches instead of within them. It creates a more layered look to add the decorative items as you go. Attach your accent items in the same way you attached the pine branches with wire. Try to use an odd number of accent items. We used five pine cones and three ribbons for our wreath.
STEP 2:
Loosely tie the fabric and ribbon to the thick twine. Leave a few inches of length at the top. By tying the fabric loosely, you will be able to adjust the strips as needed.
STEP 3: TRIM THE PINE NEEDLES
Continue this process until you have completed your wreath. Lastly, take scissors and trim the extra pine needles to create a clean edge around the wreath.

We also added some adorable vintage name tags from our favourite local craft and stationery shops and pieces of greenery for a pop of colour. Grab your favourite ribbon and join us as we show you how to achieve the adorable looks below!

4. JINGLE ALL THE WAY!
You’ll know when the kids are rattling the presents with this design! Jingle bells make the perfect accent for any gift.
2. BURLAP AND RIBBON
For this look, you can try using wired, burlap ribbon layered with strips of ripped fabric in your favourite pattern. We added a bit of greenery for a fun, textured look.
TIP: The first layer of ribbon is a strip of red burlap layered with a gorgeous, red satin ribbon. A shiny jingle bell, holiday tag, and greenery make the perfect accents!
5. FABRIC WRAPPED BOXES
Have you ever considered completely wrapping a gift using fabric? You can use fabric and hot glue for the base, and tulle, tissue paper, and foil paper for the cute gathering at the top. Layers of ribbon with various patterns add depth and style resulting in wrapping that anyone will love just as much as the gift inside!
ISSUE 12 2016
TIP: When using craft paper to wrap your gifts, sticking down the seams with hot-glue instead of tape is the best technique for a secure seal and a clean, seamless look. Tape does not hold craft paper together for very long.

Not every present has to have a typical bow placed directly in the centre of the box. Consider placing your bow in the top quarter of the gift to give it a unique and very striking look. Add a vintage gift tag for a personalized touch!

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 but became an official United Nations Day in 2006. It is the largest diabetes awareness campaign in the world, reaching over a billion people in 160 countries. This year, the theme is Eyes on Diabetes and aims to encourage people to screen themselves for Type 2 diabetes. Early detection is important so that treatment can begin before the onset of serious complications.

Type 2 Diabetes is most often controlled through a careful diet and physical activity but depending on the severity, medication and/or insulin may also be used to treat it but this is not very common. Type 2 Diabetes is more commonly known to develop in adults but children may also be affected. Some warning signs for Type 2 Diabetes to look out for are: • Increased thirst and frequent urination • Abnormal fatigue • Blurry vision • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal • High blood pressure • Insomnia – researchers have found a link between sleeping less than five hours a night and having Type 2 Diabetes.
WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is when the body either can’t produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that is created by beta cells in the pancreas and helps to regulate the amount of sugar in your blood. Diabetes is a chronic, often debilitating and sometimes even fatal disease.
TYPE 1 DIABETES
Type 1 Diabetes affects about 5 to 10 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is when the immune system mistakenly attacks and kills the beta cells produced by the pancreas. This means that very little or no insulin is released into the blood, creating a build-up of sugar in the blood, instead of it being used or stored for energy. Type 1 Diabetes is almost always treated with insulin but careful dietary choices and meal planning can help to control the amount of sugar in the blood. Type 1 Diabetes normally develops in childhood or adolescence but it has been known to develop in adulthood. Complications from Type 1 Diabetes can be fatal and early diagnosis and following your treatment plan strictly is extremely important. Type 1 Diabetes normally develops gradually but development can be triggered by certain viral infections and this can bring on a sudden onset of symptoms. If you or your children suffer from any of the following symptoms, get to a doctor for testing as soon as possible: • Extreme tiredness or weakness • Extreme thirst and abnormally frequent urination • Abdominal pain with nausea and/or vomiting • Blurry vision • Wounds that don’t heal well • Changes to or loss of menstruation The earlier you or your children get tested, the sooner treatment can begin and the chances of developing any serious or lasting complications will be minimized.
TYPE 2 DIABETES
Type 2 Diabetes is a lot more common than Type 1. Type 2 Diabetes is when the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not properly use the insulin it has produced, it is also known as insulin resistance or insulin sensitivity. About 90% of people with diabetes have Type 2 and one in two adults with Type 2 Diabetes is undiagnosed.
GESTATIONAL DIABETES
This is a temporary condition that only occurs in pregnancy, but it increases the risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child. When a woman is pregnant, her body naturally becomes more resistant to insulin so that more glucose is available to nourish the baby. For most women, this isn’t a problem – when the body needs more insulin to process excess sugar in the blood, the pancreas secretes more. But sometimes, the pancreas can’t keep up with the increased demand for insulin during pregnancy and blood sugar levels rise too high. This results in gestational diabetes. It needs to be recognized and treated quickly to avoid complications for the mother and baby. Normally after the pregnancy is over, blood sugar levels will return to normal. Being diagnosed with any chronic illness is a big adjustment to make. It is normal to feel denial, anger or even grief when diagnosed with diabetes but keep in mind that with proper treatment and care, you can live a long and healthy life with no complications. One of the steps to ensure that happens is early detection. Get yourself screened and start living a healthy life today – it’s not too late!

Here Comes Summer
The countdown has begun! Your December holiday is booked and you are counting the days until you can lie on the beach with some sunblock and a book. Luckily there are a few things you can start doing to relax in anticipation and make sure you hit the beach looking and feeling better than ever. Follow these tips for making sure you have salubrious skin, gleaming hair and the best beach body possible!

YOUR HAIR
Start exfoliating six weeks before you go. Buy yourself a dry body brush to exfoliate and massage the skin to leave it feeling soft and looking smooth. Brush your skin in the direction of your heart using long, firm strokes for five minutes every day. This will also help stimulate circulation and detoxify your body. Complement the body brushing with some skin firming products. While diet and exercise are definitely the best for toning, collagen boosting formulas can help to tighten up saggy skin. Before you go for your pre-holiday spray tan, use an exfoliating body scrub and moisturize your skin to make sure it is prepared for the chemicals. Massage a fragrance free moisturizer all over the body and be sure to rub the cream into damp skin for best results. Don’t leave your waxing appointments until the day before. Make sure you get waxed at least three days before you leave so any blotchiness and redness has time to fade. If you prefer a DIY approach, get a good quality, moisturizing razor or wax strips. While on holiday, make sure you moisturize every single day and carry that sunblock around like it’s glued to your hand – don’t spend your holiday in pain and too embarrassed to leave the hotel room!
ISSUE 12 2016
Start working on your hair six weeks before your holiday, the stronger and healthier your hair is, the better equipped it will be to deal with sun, wind, chlorine and salt water. Add a weekly hair treatment to your beauty routine, a moisture mask will nourish your hair and replenish lost moisture. If the humid beach air is likely to make you look like Monica on Friends when they go to the Bahamas, book a keratin treatment four weeks before you leave. A good quality treatment will give you natural looking texture and movement without the frizz. If you’re planning on a cut and colour before your holiday, book it around two weeks before the start of your holiday. You should wash and style your new hairstyle two or three times before leaving for your trip to let the style and colour settle. The night before you go, do one last mask to make sure your hair is gleaming and gorgeous. While on holiday, remember that conditioner is your best friend. Apply a leave in conditioner to make sure your hair stays moisturized and protected. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo every two weeks to remove any mineral build up.
YOUR BODY

The dry cold of winter and heaters can dry out your skin. Facials and peels are a great way to remove dead skin and brighten your complexion. The results from more intensive peels are normally visible from about four weeks, so book yours a good six weeks before your holiday to make sure you look your best. Moisturizing your skin properly before a summer holiday is just as important as moisturizing it while in the sun. Now is the time to start using serums with ingredients such as jojoba, rosehip oils and avocado. Exfoliate every few days to remove deeper dirt and dead cells and apply a face mask once a week for a healthy glow. If your skin is prone to breakouts, use a gel based mask; or use a rich cream-based mask for drier skin. Don’t forget about using your diet to moisturize your skin: try including more fish, nuts and avocado that can strengthen and rehydrate your skin from the inside out. No one wants a breakout their first day on the beach so make sure you don’t get one just before your holiday by using targeted treatment blemish solutions a few days before your holiday. Give your face one last scrub or facial at least three days before you hit the sun so that your skin can heal before being exposed to the extra UV rays. And on your holiday, use sun block and moisturize! It’s worth investing in the highest SPF day cream you can find to protect your skin. At night, apply a good night cream to help your skin recover and eye cream to avoid fine lines.

change your life A wise man once said, “You don’t have to be great to start – but you have to start to be great.” Improving your health and changing your lifestyle for the better doesn’t mean changing everything in your life all at once. Slowly introduce some of these health hacks into your life and before you know it, you’ll feel great, you’ll be healthier and you’ll be a better you!

1. WALK IT OFF
That goes for TV, cell phones, tablets, laptops and computers. Switch it off for half an hour a day and spend that time doing something better for you. Playing games or talking about your day are great ways to bond as a family and can make you feel closer and more connected. You can also use that time to have a relaxing bubble bath or give yourself a manicure – pampering yourself is a lot more beneficial than sitting in front of the TV! Don’t eat in front of the TV either. You are more likely to overeat and forget how much you have eaten than if you sit at a table and eat properly. Make your meals an occasion; you will enjoy them much more.

Instead of sitting on Facebook or smoking (yuck!) during your fifteen minute break at work, take a brisk walk around your office complex. After a couple of months, you will be surprised at how that small amount of daily exercise can change your body shape and leave you feeling more energized and able to sleep better at night. If possible, take a walk in nature. Being in nature is known to reduce stress and has multiple additional health benefits. Rich, oxygenated air around trees and plants can help to kill bacteria and viruses, improve your breathing and may even help to prevent cancer.
3. SWITCH OFF YOUR SCREENS
2. KILL THAT HABIT
Speaking of smoking; right now is always a good time to make the decision to stop. When quitting smoking, taking it day by day is the key. Don’t think that you will never be able to smoke again, concentrate on not smoking only for today. Dividing the problem into manageable time frames will make it easier to quit and after a while, you will notice that you don’t think about it as much and you will break that habit. Quitting smoking will improve your life drastically. You will smell and taste better; your home will smell far nicer and will be healthier for your children and your lung capacity will increase – the benefits are endless.
4. REFRIGERATOR MAKEOVER
Not only is it time you threw out that old jar of jam or pickles that has been sitting at the back of your fridge for who knows how long, cleaning out your fridge has many health benefits. The more organized your fridge looks, the more likely you are to make healthier and better choices. Place fruits and veggies in clear containers and put them, along with yogurts and salads, at eye level. This way, they will be the first thing you see when you open the fridge, so they will grab your attention. Throw out all take-out containers and sweets and chocolates that you know shouldn’t be there. Eliminate the choice to make a bad decision and you will make the right ones.
5. DON'T FORGET THE FLOSS
Even though our dentists and oral hygienists have told us over and over again how important it is to floss our teeth, some statistics show that 80% of people don’t floss daily. For some reason, it’s a habit that is difficult to incorporate into your daily life, likely because it is time consuming, messy, or just one more thing added to your already long to-do list. Adding those few minutes to your daily routine is worth every second. Not only is flossing the best way to get rid of tiny food particles or plaque between your teeth, it will help to prevent bad breath, tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontal diseases. Your oral health is connected to your physical health and not flossing can actually make you susceptible to infection.

When it comes to health and fitness, there are a few limiting ideas that could be standing in the way of achieving your goals and forming good, long lasting habits. It’s these misconceptions that can make staying fit seem like an uphill battle. The truth is that fitness doesn’t need to be complicated or stressful - here are the three ideas that you need to let go of. www.wecarepharmacy.co.za
IF YOU DON’T WORK OUT FOR AN HOUR IT DOESN’T COUNT
39
This couldn’t be further from the truth because, in fact, consistency is what really counts here. If you are telling yourself you can’t exercise today because you don’t have the time then it’s time to burst your excuse bubble. Even 15 to 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference. It’s all about getting a little bit of extra movement. Flexibility, cardio, strength and agility are important parts of fitness that we should include in our schedule on a weekly basis – preferably with a little bit each day. So instead of feeling like you need long gym sessions two or three times a week, opt for exercise you enjoy that fits in better with your busy life. Aiming for 15 to 30 minutes a day is far easier to fit into your life and this way, it doesn’t feel like a chore. What do you do when you have an unexpectedly long day at the office? Plan an express session or even just a stretch before bed, use weekends and spare time for longer workouts and use shorter sessions on time-pressed or low motivation days for high intensity workouts. Mix up your training and the times. It’s all about consistency – see it as quality over quantity.

I NEED TO BE EATING LOW FAT
Low fat doesn’t necessarily mean healthy. Experts advise that the best rule to live by is to eat as fresh as you can. The closer an ingredient or food is to its natural state, the better. Low fat, low carb processed foods often aren’t the most nutritionally dense. Our bodies are designed to work in harmony to break down fibre, absorb essential fats, minerals and vitamins and utilise energy sources from natural foods. If you have a diet rich in wholefoods that includes lots of vegetables, salads, and lean meats and as little packaged food as possible, you will feel and look amazing. Get back to basics and leave the marketing jargon and quick fixes behind.
YOU NEED A GYM AND EQUIPMENT TO GET FIT
This might be the biggest myth of all! If joining a gym isn’t for you, take your gym outdoors. Try some new sports that will help you to get fit and be active without feeling like you are missing out. Try putting together a mini core workout for your day that you know only takes 15 minutes but sets you up for the day ahead. Walk, run, bike, swim and enjoy being active as a way of life. And when in doubt – go online. There are literally thousands of
at-home and equipment free workouts available on websites such as Pinterest. Just ensure that you opt for a workout from a credible and qualified source. The options are endless. In fact, your body and your mind will thank you for a change of scenery every now and then! Healthy habits are there to help you live life to your best potential. Keep things super simple. Exercise outdoors, have fun with your kids, find healthy food you love and enjoy these elements more often. Create real synergy between work, life, friends, family, health and wellbeing. All these pillars make up a winning week and a life you love. Once you get those elements in tune there’s no stopping you.

It is that time of year when temptation presents itself at every turn and makes it so hard to hold onto healthy habits. Year-end brings with it celebrations, parties, indulgent meals and every reason to blow the healthy diet. But don’t panic! We all need time-out now and then. The important thing is to know when we have overdone it and how to balance out the excessiveness. Many times food options available at festive events might be high in added sugars, salt and unhealthy fats, along with kilojoule-laden alcoholic drinks, and we often don’t realise just how much we’ve eaten. This, combined with a busier schedule, makes maintaining your exercise and health strategy more challenging. Don’t let the guilt of overdoing it prevent you from enjoying the festive fun. Here are some easy tips to keep in mind through the festive season. Eat and be merry...but don’t overdo it!
EAT CLEVER THESE HOLIDAYS ENJOY CHRISTMAS DAY; JUST DON’T LET IT BECOME CHRISTMAS MONTH!
Make the most of time celebrating with family and friends at Christmas lunch and dinner; just don’t make it a daily habit. One meal won’t ruin your waistline, so give yourself permission to enjoy the indulgence guilt-free, and counter-balance it by getting back on track with some healthier options the very next day (don’t wait to do it the next year.)
DON’T SKIP MEALS TO MAKE UP FOR INDULGING
This can lead to cravings for sweet, salty and fatty foods at your
next meal, causing you to overeat and wreaking havoc with your weight. Instead of saving up for the big meal, nibble on healthy snacks like raw veggies, nuts, and fruit throughout the day to avoid going overboard.
EAT MINDFULLY
The buffet table is an invitation to eat all you can, so first survey what is available, choose the foods you really want to eat, and then move away. Eat slowly, focusing on enjoying the taste and smell of each bite. Eat what you love, leave what you like. Instead of piling your plate high with things that don’t really tantalize your taste buds (fruit cake is a common culprit), pick only the foods that give you true enjoyment.
TRIM THE TRIMMINGS Many foods served at a festive meal can be healthy minus all the unhealthy extras. So by all means enjoy the Christmas turkey, but then leave out the skin and go easy on the stuffing or gravy. CHEERS
Alcohol can add a lot of extra kilojoules to your festive meal. So make that toast with a wine spritzer instead of kilojoule-laden
nutrition mixed alcoholic drinks. Alternate your alcoholic drink with a nonalcoholic one such as sparkling water to cut back on additional kilojoules.
TREAT YOURSELF TO DESSERT
Life would be rather boring if we had to cut out all treats. Enjoy your favourite cake, but have a smaller slice. Christmas pudding is packed full of healthy dried fruit, but serve it with low-fat custard rather than cream. If chocolate is your thing then opt for dark chocolate - it might take some time to get used to, but it will satisfy your chocolate craving. It's a better choice than regular chocolate as it is higher in antioxidants and lower in sugar, but this is not a guilt-free option so just have a small amount! Make the most of the delicious seasonal summer fruits to add natural sweetness and freshness to desserts.
BE A SNACK SMUGGLER
www.wecarepharmacy.co.za
Travelling, shopping, and running errands during the holidays can lead to skipping meals, tempting fast foods or surrendering to that doughnut. To keep your appetite in check, never leave home without a snack. Fruit makes a refreshing and easy-to-grab snack, and unsalted nuts are perfect to keep in your handbag. Homemade popcorn seasoned with paprika and mixed herbs makes a healthier alternative to potato crisps.
KEEP HYDRATED
41
In the summer it’s easy to confuse hunger with thirst. Keep cold water nearby and stay hydrated instead of automatically reaching for a snack first. Freeze a bottle of water overnight for a hot day or add mint leaves and lemon slices to enhance the flavour. Make homemade ice-coffee for a refreshing drink that can count as one of your daily dairy portions and is healthier than, but just as refreshing as, ice cream. Cool down an espresso or strong black coffee and mix with milk and ice. Add this to a blender or the ice blocks can be left whole. The best is to have it ice cold!

TIPS FOR MIND-SET AND
MOVEMENT THESE HOLIDAYS
BREATHE
Taking a break from the daily hustle and bustle is a great way to recharge and re-energise. Take some time away from distractions such as email or social media and just breathe. The holiday season is a particularly good time to relax, reflect and renew your thinking.
GET MOVING WITH A FRIEND
The holidays are a great time to spend quality time with friends. But instead of catching up over coffee and cake, make the most of the warm weather and plan to do something where you can be active together. Grab a take-away smoothie and meet for a walk on the beach, get a group together and go for a hike, or take up some dance lessons with friends.
SIGN UP FOR A FUTURE EVENT
Register for a fun event in 2017, like a walk, fun run, or race, and ask friends to join you. Having something exciting to look forward to and to prepare for will help you stay active and focused on a long-term goal.
EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM
On particularly busy days, try to get off to a great start and clear
your head by getting active early in the day. It will help you stay focused amidst the hectic holiday activities. Plus, if you make it a part of your holiday routine, there will be no need for a New Year’s resolution that entails more physical activity.
GET FLEXIBLE
Use some extra free time to try some fun classes like yoga or do regular stretches. This will help to keep you limber and relax you even further during the holidays.
MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR
Recruit the whole family and enjoy the outdoors. Going for a walk or playing a sport is a great way to get the whole family involved. Celebrate and have fun! There is more to being active than structured workouts.
MOVE
It’s quite simple: the more you move, the more active you are! Find ways throughout the day to get more movement in. This could mean walking instead of taking public transport or parking your car further away when getting groceries. Clean your house or chase your kids/pets around. Be the first one on the dance floor at a holiday gathering. It doesn’t matter how – just get moving!
