Checkers coming to Wrenn Miller Park Wrenn Miller Park will be getting a checkerboard, if all goes well with the plans of Mac Williams. Williams, a member of Troop No. 68, Akela Division Old North State Council, presented his 13-page Eagle Scout project plan for a life-size checkerboard presented plans for his 13-page, life-size Eagle Scout project to the Jamestown Town Council on Jan. 16 and received unanimous approval. “My Eagle Scout project aims to enhance the recreational offerings in Jamestown by constructing life-

size checkers set in Wrenn Miller Park,” Williams told the Council. “The project involves installing permanent checkers pieces and utilizing tiling materials to construct the playing board. This interactive installation will provide a unique and enjoyable outdoor activity, community engagement and promote the use of this space for recreational purposes. “Recreation is needed for fostering overall welfare, healthy benefits, and engaging in enriching opportunities that add value to life.” He believes the proximity to town hall will be a draw. “The life-size checkers is not only a recreational addition but also a tool for social connections in Jamestown.”

One option for the new life-size checkerboard in Wrenn Miller Park is alternating turf and tiles. Williams submitted several different designs for the project but the specific design has yet to be decided. He believes the total cost would be just over $2,000. He hopes friends and local businesses will donate to the project.

No one from the audience spoke during the public hearing for a proposed amendment to the Solid Waste Ordinance. After a brief discussion among town council members, the amendment passed with one minor change suggested by Councilmember Sarah Glanville. Article XIV, Administration, Enforcement and Civil Penalties of the ordinance now reads after the addition to subsection (a): “If, in the sole discretion of the Public Services Director or their designee, there is a violation which endangers the public safety, health, or welfare, the Town may elect to remedy a violation without prior notification to the prop-

erty owner. Every attempt should be made to first contact the property owners to arrange for a suitable remedy. However, if efforts to contact the owner are unsuccessful, the Town may elect to enter the property without prior notification to the property owner, perform the work necessary to correct the condition, and bill the owner for costs incurred. If the property owner fails to pay the bill for such work within thirty (30) days of such notice the amount of the bill and any collection costs incurred shall become a lien against the subject property and shall be collected in the same manner see park, page 2

The family that writes together… By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com One might think a woman with seven children — not to mention homeschooling them — would not have time on her hands to read, much less write a book. But Renee Greene is not only the mother of seven, she is also an author of over 50 books! Add in the other authors and illustrators in the family and there are over 100 books coming out of the household. “I began writing almost 20 years ago,” Greene said, when she wanted to do a unit on short stories for her middle school children. “So I decided to write a short story so I would know what to teach them. Forty pages into it, I realized it was not going to be short. “Pretty soon my husband and children were all asking what I was typing and began reading it. It got to the point where they would cook dinner or do whatever they could so I could type.” She said she once came home

coNtiNUeD froM froNt to find a note on the front door that said, “Mom, type!” The short story turned into the “Heroes Trilogy” book series. As a new writer, she realized there was a lot to learn so she sought advice — and still does — from everyone. Once she starts writing, she is fully involved and once wrote eight novels in one year and the “Faeborn Trilogy” in 28 days. “I tend to type early in the morning, late at night or anytime during the day where I have a few minutes,” she said. “I homeschool, so while my son is doing work he doesn’t need help with, I type. If I have a few minutes of waiting, I type. I am not big on wasting time, so almost any time I get a few minutes, I will use it, and my favorite way to use spare minutes is typing on stories. Stories are great escapes from reality and great bonding activities with my family.” Not all of the children live at home now and Greene will soon be the proud grandmother of nine. Although not trained as a writer — she holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Wake Forest University — she ran a local drama group Showtime Performers for 20 years where she developed the stories, directed, choreographed and composed some music for many of the shows. She also performed with the Carolina Renaissance Festival in Huntersville for several years. The festival recreates a fictional Renaissance-era village with costumed characters offering interactive entertainment. Jousting knights, mermaids, fairies and dragons are just a few of the characters visitors may encounter. Readers of Greene’s books will also come

across some of these same characters and even more. She does not limit herself to just one genre but her writings include animé, science fiction, fantasy, romance, dystopian societies, adventures, urban fantasy, fairy tales and even Christian allegory. All books are family friendly. It is not surprising that some of her favorite authors are Mark Twain, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Greene’s family gives her ideas for characters and some story lines. During most evenings, husband Doug reads aloud the latest chapter she has written and the rest of the family offers potential characters and ideas for the book. “The ‘Faeborn’ series was my daughter Heather’s idea, but she had each of us develop different cities and the war mage teams for them,” Greene said. “’The Crown Series’ also had different family members create the different kingdoms. “My children, particularly Heather and Daniel, are responsible for the ideas of many of my books,” she said. “Michael comes up with interesting ideas too and wrote the ‘Woodcreek Academy Series.’” “I sometimes make the kids write instead of taking their ideas,” Greene added. A recent book has four authors, Renee and Daniel, Michael and Joseph. She currently is helping two of them write books. “I know the world. I know how magic works. I know the characters,” she said. She also knows how the book will end. It is just a matter of getting the story there. “You always have to know the villain’s next move.” Other family members illustrate. Doug Greene’s sister Tamia Gordon is an illustrator. Greene does a lot of

research for each book and takes “vast notes.” She doesn’t outline books in advance but she does create a spreadsheet to keep locations and characters consistent. The heroes in the books are good role models. The ideas generated from the books have lead to big ambitions for Greene. “I dream of having my books become as big of a franchise as the Marvel Universe superhero movies. I sure have enough books that would make great movies,” she said with a smile. For newcomers to her writing, she has some recommendations. “I think if I knew nothing about someone and was just told to recommend a series, I would recommend ‘The Faeborn’ series or ‘CAMO.’ If asked to recommend a stand-alone book, I’d likely recommend ‘Book of Destiny.’ For men, I often recommend ‘The Nameless.’ It’s an intense dystopia, and I’ve had very good feedback from men on that book. “I love writing. I do it for fun. I’d love to spread reading as a family to many families, as it’s a great bonding activity. I try to write books that all ages can enjoy, making sure that any adult topics are written in such a way that they will be appropriate for younger family members to read or hear.” Renee Greene's books, as well as those of her family, are available in print or for Kindle on Amazon.com. For more information about the family, visit debokton.com. The landing page of this website reads, "Start your Adventure! Recognitions were presented noting the service of Pam Burgess as a Planning Board alternate and Sarah Glanville as Planning Board member and later chair. Long-time service station owner Mike Tester was honored for his service to the town. Tester closed his station the end of December after nearly 30 years. Carol Anderson could not be present to accept her resolution from Mayor Lynn Montgomery. Anderson was recognized for her diligence in picking up trash around town. “What she has done is pick up trash when nobody really notices what’s going on out there,” said Montgomery. “She went through down town the day of the [Christmas] parade or the day before and picked up all the trash on the entire parade route. “This is one of those things not everybody knows about and we wanted to recognize Carol for that but her request was ‘just tell people if they want to work with me to call Elizabeth Greeson at the town hall and she will connect us.’ “We look forward to seeing her more.” The new Golf/Recreation Maintenance Building is awaiting the final certificate of occupancy from Guilford County, according to Town Manager Matthew Johnson. He added that the new restrooms on the golf course are 99 percent complete and awaiting a final building inspection from the county. The February town council meeting has been moved up a week to Feb. 13.
