High school athletes sign intent to play college ball By nORMa B. dennIs FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com While many students are getting a bit more sleep before beginning their day, some are already awake and active — training to help give themselves an edge in their chosen athletic endeavors. Putting in the extra effort and giving their sport all they have on the field has paid off for four Ragsdale High School athletes who will continue to play at the college level. “I cannot imagine getting up early to train,” said RHS athletic director Deborah Jones. “It shows true passion for their sport.” On Dec. 21, three baseball players and one football player showed their intent to include sports in their college education at a signing in front of their peers, coaches, teachers and school staff. Head baseball coach Donnie Maness and football coach Johnny Boykin praised the dedication and character of each. Garrett Crum will play baseball for Division 1 University of North Carolina
Asheville. It was the only college to which he applied. “Being able to sign to a Division 1 school has always been a big goal of mine,” Crum said. “When I visited UNC-Asheville, I loved the environment of the school and the people running it, including the coaches and players.” Crum began playing tee ball when he was 4 years old. He also played football and soccer until he was 9 and played one season of basketball. But his main focus has continued to be baseball. “I fell in love with that sport,” he said. The friends I made along the way have been a major part of why I enjoy it. Traveling and spending time with teammates helped me get to know them better and created better chemistry on the field. Making the All-State team my junior year was also special.” Crum acknowledged a person could fall in love with a sport just by participating. He Photo by Norma B. Young artist learns the art of business By nORMa B. dennIs FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Seven-year-old Austen Gomez is a second grade student at Jamestown Elementary School. She is also an artist and entrepreneur, painting and selling her artwork at area vendor shows. Her business, quite naturally, is called Austen’s Art. Austen has been drawing and painting since she was approximately 3 years old. She started creating with watercolors, but now uses acrylic paints as her preferred medium. It has only been in the past year that she has taken her art from a pastime to a business. She designed two styles of business cards, then
combined them to get the look she desired. She has a page on her mother’s website designated for her artwork and a Facebook page where she can post her favorite paintings. “It has been cool to watch her artwork develop,” said her mother Christy. “When I told her she could probably sell her painting at vender events some day, she took that to mean now.” Christy is a photographer who participates in vendor shows so Austen has seen what her mother does. When she received Christmas money from her grandfather, Austen decided to use it for art supplies. The rest — as the cliché goes — is history. One of her aunts asked Austen to paint a picture of a unicorn and purchased see aRTIsT, PAGe 2

Repair work on the dam at the Jamestown Park Golf Course resulted in fewer rounds played in November. There were 1,214 rounds played compared to 1,724 in November 2022, bringing in $41,627 less than the previous year. Total rounds played this fiscal year are up just over 1,000. Driving range revenue, however, was up nearly $300 and year-to-date is up approximately $30,500. Total golf operations revenue for November was $42,611 and operating expenditures were $119,933. There was a net operating loss of $54,282 for the month. Year-to-date, 2023 shows a operating revenue of $61,828 more than the previous time period. Maintenance expenditures indicate an increase of $13,831.

With the rural setting in mind, several Greensboro citizens, including Cesar Cone who himself was diagnosed with TB, created the Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanatorium on High Point Road, now East Main Street, on property once owned by the Iddings family. On Dec. 20, 1921, county voters passed a $100,000 bond issue to build and finance a
facility to treat tuberculosis patients — away from uninfected local residents. Private donations and the sale of Christmas seals raised another $125,000. According to a report by Mrs. Annette Sloan Tinsley, dated Oct. 31, 1923, “the medical society passed a resolution whereby every case of tuberculosis coming under their observation shall
be reported to the county hospital. This makes the hospital a clearing house for all tuberculosis work.” The new brick sanatorium opened Jan. 22, 1924. Reports at the time called it “one of the most modern and best equipped institutions of its kind in the South.” Cost with furnishings was $165,000. “The Guilford County
Tuberculosis Sanatorium is the first institution built under the act of 1917, which authorized any county to build and maintain a tuberculosis hospital by bond issue and special tax,” said Dr. J.L. Spruill, the sanatorium’s first superintendent. “The object of this institution is to have a place where the tuberculosis patients of Guilford County can go to be

Although you’d never know it by looking at the campus now, at one time, the land where Guilford Technical Community College now sits was home to a sanatorium that treated tuberculosis, the leading cause of death at the turn of the 20th century. Also called consumption, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the best treatment for the lung disease was thought to be rest and fresh air, often in a rural setting. Patients were often away from their families for years. The first cottage sanatorium in the United States opened in 1920. Reports show that 125 people in Guilford County died of tuberculosis in 1920.

continued from front There were 60 beds, all situated off porches, and separated for men and women. There also was a wing that provided care for African Americans. A separate children’s ward opened in 1926 with its own dining room and kitchen. At most, the campus treated 140 patients. According to an area newspaper at the time, the “wards were light and pleasant with views of Guilford County. Each ward is screened, faces, the south and affords plenty of sunlight, something needed in the treatment of the disease. The beds will be kept on the porch at all times except when there is a blizzard, or exceedingly stormy weather, making it necessary to move them inside.” Patients were charged $1 per day which included everything but personal laundry. No patient was turned away for inability to pay, however. To say the sanatorium was much-needed in the county would be an understatement. It is believed the sanatorium treated 987 patients in 1937 alone. Many patients were ambulatory and often did crafts, walked on a track, read, exercised and sat in the sun. They received nutritious meals, regular medications and occupational therapy. Some of the embroidery
and leatherwork crafts done by patients were sterilized and sold at craft fairs. Dr. M.D. Bonner, who had come to work with Dr. Spruill, succeeded him in 1934. Bonner served until the hospital closed. With the development of drugs to treat the disease, the number of cases in Guilford County dropped and the sanatorium closed in late 1955. Remaining patients were moved to a state sanatorium in Moore County. The Guilford Industrial Educational Center — later Guilford Technical Institute and now GTCC — opened
continued from front at the location in 1958 as a vocational training center to supplement the public school system. The sanatorium buildings were used for over 18 years before being replaced with modern classroom buildings. When driving along East Main Street in front of the GTCC campus, notice the ornate gazebo. It is the only original remaining part of the sanatorium and was originally a bus stop. See Dec. 13, 2023, Jamestown News for Shelly Lutzweiler’s address to the Historic Jamestown Society regarding the Iddings family.
School was different if you went in a sanatorium Three 1958-59 seventh-grade classes at Jamestown Public School have a dubious distinction. They attended school in a sanatorium. A former sanatorium, that is. The Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanatorium, which was located where GTCC is now, closed in 1955, leaving the buildings vacant. As a result of overcrowding in the public school, the three classes of youngsters boarded buses at neighboring Jamestown Elementary for their school day in the main building on the sanatorium campus. They had to wait for the two buses to finish their regular routes, thereby ensuring the students a slightly shorter school day. The classes became closer because they spent a lot of time
on the buses. Since there was no cafeteria at the sanatorium, they had to return to the public school for lunch, then travel back to the sanatorium for afternoon classes, with a final trip back at day’s end. Some of the seventh-graders stayed at the public school. Band students practiced during the day and it would have required yet another bus ride. Also, some classes were combination sixth/seventh and didn’t move. Apparently few parents or students objected to attending school in a building that once treated an infectious disease. As a precaution, the building was fumigated before the start of the school year and several times during the stay of the students.
it. She sold to other family members and when she displayed at her first vendor event sold all the paintings she had taken. “My teacher, Rhonda Holland, has bought one of my pictures and showed it to my class,” Austen said. “I like painting seasonal images,” she added. “Fall is my favorite time and I paint a lot around that. When my dad said he wanted a picture of something under the sea, I did one in acrylic paint.” Austen also enjoys painting custom pet portraits. She takes orders using a QR code at an event, a paper order form or a form online. She then paints using a photograph of her subject. Her pictures are usually done on 8x10 canvases, but when she recently painted a picture of two dogs together, she decided a bigger canvas would work better and used a 10x10. “I like to shop at Michael’s,” Austen said when asked where she got her supplies. Her parents have provided guidance about determining the price of a painting depending on the cost of materials. Her skills are largely self-taught from observations. She has learned
something about painting in her art classes at school, participated in a Wine and Design class and gotten some ideas from the Internet. Besides the pet portraits, much of what she paints comes from her imagination. “She is such a natural at it, Austen does not realize she is learning techniques as she goes along,” Christy said. “We are really proud of her,” Brant, her dad, noted. Although she is currently selling her artwork, Austen still enjoys just creating paintings for her family or to hang in her own room. She paints a couple of times a month, more if a show is nearing or in the summer. She has added some craft items to her sales at the vendor shows. Austen especially likes talking to people at the shows and selling her artwork. She has not decided if she wants to continue selling her work in the future, but for now is enjoying the process. Her 5-year-old sister Ashlynn has not shown the same interest in art, but she does have her own business. “I walk dogs,” she said confidently. encouraged Edwards to play baseball. “Basketball is more prevalent in our family, but my dad believed in playing two sports,” Edwards said. “Because I am left-handed, baseball was one. “Sports teach valuable life lessons. They have influenced various aspects of my life, including work ethic, body care, time management and forming meaningful connections. I would recommend participating in sports for the experience of meeting new people and personal growth even if you do not pursue them at higher levels.” Edwards plays outfield, but would like to improve his throwing arm. His strengths in hitting and running, however, make him an asset to the team. Progressing physically to hit home runs and steal bases is a significant athletic accomplishment. He finds dealing with failure a mental challenge, however, and the toughest part of the game. His parents, Shannon Edwards Sr. and Tiffany have been his primary encouragement and support in his athletic career. “I have enjoyed traveling with them, meeting new people, playing against diverse teams and bonding with teammates. When not on the baseball field I like to play games, hang out with friends and explore new activities.” Going pro is never far from his mind. In fact, Edwards calls it his ultimate goal. Of the four athletes, Chance Pickard is traveling the farthest from home for his college career. He will be playing football at Morgan State University in Maryland where he will also major in physical science and physical therapy. The campus and potential he saw for himself while visiting there were major factors in
selecting Morgan. Pickard’s mother Christina danced in the Marching Band, played tennis and ran indoor track for a short time for Dudley High School. His grandfather, Charlie Ward Sr., was a best allaround athlete who played many sports, including football. It was his grandfather who actually started him on the path to playing football when he was 7 years old. “He thought I was getting chubby,” Pickard said. “My freshman and sophomore years I ran track and played basketball, but I focused on football because I knew it could take me the furthest. And, I was real good at it. My ultimate goal is to go to the NFL.” His mother, brother and coach have all encouraged Pickard, pushing him to do his best and be competitive. But Pickard would not recommend sports for everybody. “Not everyone has what it takes to compete or stay focused with both sports and school,” he said. But participating in sports has helped me handle large work loads because I’ve had to work harder to do both.” Pickard sees himself as athletic and explosive, qualities that help him in his position as a defensive lineman. Although game planning against strong offenses can be difficult, the celebration after a big play makes it all worthwhile. Although he will not soon forget catching the game winning 2-point conversion at Northern High School with a few seconds left, he admits that signing to play football at Morgan has been his biggest athletic accomplishment. Pickard is the son of Christina Sacko and Antonio Pickard. He enjoys going out to eat with his mom and siblings. He also likes to workout, watch movies and compete in games.

continued from front teammates and coaches. “I think sports has helped me build better character as a man,” he said. “It’s taught me to be humble and to keep working even when times get tough.” As a right-handed pitcher, Crum feels his strength for the sport is his control in accuracy and longevity throughout the games. He considers nerve-racking moments when the pressure is on as one of the best aspects of the game. “It can be hard to stay in a game when you are down, however, because if the whole team isn’t in it it’s almost impossible to come back,” he said. “The

coaches and my dad have all encouraged me throughout the years, especially my dad. He was always trying to pick me up if I had a bad game and it really helped me create a better mindset.” His dad Greg understands what it means to maintain a positive attitude having played baseball in high school and football at Worcester State University. His dad and mother Aimee are two of his biggest fans. Crum’s goal would be to go pro after college. But while in school he plans to major in sports management or business. When not concentrating on baseball, he enjoys playing poker with friends or pickup games of basketball and football. Division 3 Brevard College was Cole Moebius’ first and only choice of schools. He likes the area and says it felt like home whenever he stepped on campus. Although he played football in the eighth grade, baseball has always been his true love and he is looking forward to playing at Brevard. “When I am on the field playing there are no other worries in the world,” he said. He grew up in a sports family. His dad and one of his brothers played college baseball and his other brother played college soccer. As catcher and outfielder for his high school team, Moebius feels his mentality and physical toughness are assets to the game and he enjoys being a team player. “But I’d like to be more consistent physically on the field,” he said. “Giving everything you’ve got while on the field with your closest friends is important. These guys will end up being friends for life. It’s a family. “Winning is pretty cool,” he added. “But when things get low, this game has a
way of humbling you very quick. You’ll have the highest of highs and lowest of lows and you have to figure out how to battle back and recover. I’ve taken some parts of the game into my everyday life such as work ethic and a lot of mental aspects.” He considers his parents, Jim and Tracy, as his number one supporters and says his coaches have believed in his ability and given him confidence. Help from his teammates also have kept him going. Some of his favorite memories include being part of a perfect game during his freshman year. He also recalls obtaining round three in playoffs during his sophomore year and having the game-winning hit during the second round. He has watched some of his closest friends grow into college athletes as well. Moebius says he is outside 90 percent of the time when weather permits. He likes to fish, kayak and spend time at the beach. He plans to major in exercise science and although he would love to become a professional baseball player, his first priority is earning the starting spot in college. Savoi Edwards plans to major in kinesiology in college. But he is most excited for the opportunity to play baseball at Division 1 North Carolina A&T. “I applied to eight colleges, but chose to attend A&T because it was close to home and many family members had gone there,” Edwards said. “It also offered a good chance to advance in the sport.” When Edwards was 3, his dad registered him to play baseball at the YMCA. He was not particularly fond of the sport and also participated in basketball, football and soccer during his youth. Although his dad played basketball and football, he

Couch Theatre By deMI TaVeRas Priscilla (R) — Since it is so often the case with Hollywood to tout out similar movies back-to-back while interest is still up, we all knew that a foil to Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which tells the story of musical legend Elvis Presley, was surely on its way. And a year later, it came by way of Sofia Coppola and Presley’s ex-wife, Priscilla. In this biopic, Cailee Spaeny plays a young Priscilla just as she meets the man who would become one of the most popular singers in the world, and her future husband, this time played by Jacob Elordi. While the film didn’t wow at the box office, it received positive reviews from critics for
Spaeny and Elordi, with Spaeny snagging a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Globes. Out now to rent. A true triple threat, Levy stars as the lead character, while also directing and having written the screenplay himself. At the film’s start, his character, Marc, is struggling with the unexpected death of his husband, and after spending a year grieving with his best friends, Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel), the trio decides to go on a weekend getaway to Paris.

— loaded with gelatin, chondroitin and immuneboosting nutrients. It’s a remedy for gut health and hydration, thanks to minerals like zinc, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Opt for low-sodium store-bought broth if time is of the essence. Antioxidant Allies: Onion and garlic — culinary superheroes — bring not just flavor, but also antioxidants and antibacterial properties to the table. Carrots, celery, peas and kale join the fray, delivering a vitamin-packed punch that supports a robust immune system. Mushroom Magic: Don’t overlook the fungi!
