Library depends on volunteers BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com For over a century the massive brick building on the corner of West Main Street and Ragsdale Road has remained a focal point for the town of Jamestown. Constructed as a public school in 1915, today it houses a community library and educational achieves. Library manager Jim McGaha is quick to note the part volunteers played in this transformation — from saving the building from demolition to collecting and cataloging books to maintaining the facility and providing service to its many patrons. Today the library has two full-time paid employees, including McGaha, who began working in the library as a volunteer, and Joy Davis, and two part-time
paid employees, Heather McKay and Sue Elder. But just as volunteers were an important part of starting the library, they still play a large role in helping the many patrons who continue to use its services. “We have 12 volunteers on our schedule and a couple of substitutes who fill in when needed,” McGaha said. “Many are retired, but we have a couple of sisters working to get school service credit hours, students from CJ Greene Education Center who come with a support teacher and someone helping as part of her community service. Several teens volunteer during our summer reading program. “All are book lovers and most, if not all, are book readers who enjoy sharing information about what they read or authors they enjoy.” Volunteers are always
needed but not easily acquired. Many adults are busy with work and other activities or with the activities of their children. But according to McGaha, volunteering does not take a large commitment of time. Most volunteers work only one time a week for a few hours. “Many work in the morning,” McGaha said. “I would love to have more help in the afternoon and early evenings.” People often see the work done by the person at the front desk as a major volunteer opportunity, but there are many other jobs that must be done to keep the library running efficiently. Shelving books and making sure all are arranged in order so they can be easily found, helping with special events, creating gift baskets to sell and assisting patrons to find

books or other needed items are all extremely important. “We need volunteers who are willing to do what needs to be done,” McGaha said. “There are lots of behindthe-scene jobs that people do not know about. We try to match jobs with a volunteer’s interest and train them as needed.” Sample comments from volunteers Since volunteering when the library first opened in 1988, Jean Regan has done a bit of everything, from working the desk, to making gift baskets to covering SEE LIBRARY, PAGE 2

COMPILED BY NORMA B. DENNIS AND CAROL BROOKS JUMC PUMPKIN PATCH For those who have not yet acquired a pumpkin to create your Halloween jack-o-lantern or for your Thanksgiving porch display there is still time. The Jamestown United Methodist Pumpkin Patch will be open through Oct. 31, Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-dusk and Sunday from noon until dusk. In the event of rain, the patch may be closed. The event has been held at the church since 1993. Ashby Brown, former JUMC choir director, and James Johnson, a former youth minister at the church, started the pumpkin patch to raise extra funds for youth and choir ministries. Today the proceeds continue to support these projects. RAGSDALE TIGER THEATRE The Ragsdale Tiger Theatre will present The Crucible Nov. 1, 2, 3 and 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ragsdale High School auditorium. The play was written in 1953 by American playwright Arthur Miller. Based on the true events surrounding the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692—1693, the play shows that lies can kill. The cost to attend the production is $7 at the door and $6 with a Ragsdale I.D. (The play was produced with the help of Dramatists Play Service.) EARLY VOTING Early voting for the Nov. 7 General Election has begin. The Civic Center at Jamestown Town Hall is one of the polling places but, along with two other locations, voting does not begin until Oct. 27 from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. It will continue through Nov. 3, with polls closed Saturday and Sunday. BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com With its bright costumes, skeleton heads, location on the calendar and even its name, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) should not be mistaken for a Mexican version of Halloween. Halloween, or All Hallows Eve on Oct. 31 is a night of terror and mischief. All Saints Day follows on Nov. 1. Día de los Muertos is a two-day event Nov. 1 and 2 each year, when it is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit their living family members. It shows love and respect for the deceased family members. Many people celebrate the day by visiting the graves of loved ones and erecting altars (ofrendas) with their favorite foods, drinks and photos. These altars are not for worshipping, but to welcome the spirits back to the land of the living. The High Point Museum has partnered with the YWCA Latino Family Center since 2017 to host the Día de los Muertos event. The event is a hands-on learning experience and celebration of the Day of the Dead at the museum with altars, kids’ activities and an honoring of the loved ones that have passed away, a Latin American tradition brought to the High Point community by High Point families. “Día de Los Muertos is a

Global warming and the Mendenhalls Global warming has been in the news for years. Not only has the country experienced several days in a row of high temperatures not normally seen, but regions we expect to find covered in snow and ice also have experienced warming temperatures. The website www.climate.gov states Alaska has warmed twice as fast as the rest of the United States in the last several decades. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that Alaska’s glaciers are among the fastest melting glaciers on Earth.
Warmer temperatures have endangered the ecosystem and the salmon habitat. Nutrients from the glacier feed plankton in the ocean and the plankton feed the whales. But areas normally covered in ice are also suffering. One such location is the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska, named for a distant relative of the Jamestown Mendenhall family, Thomas Corwin Mendenhall. Climate change is melting the Mendenhall Glacier. A report predicts that by 2100 — or perhaps 2050 — it may no longer be visible from the nearby visitor center. Citizens of Juneau are concerned that the tourism brought in will shrink, just like the glacier.
A report stated, “The glacier pours from rocky terrain between mountains into a lake dotted by stray icebergs. Its face retreated eight football fields between 2007 and 2021, according to estimates from University of Alaska Southeast researchers. Trail markers memorialize the glacier’s backward march, showing where the ice once stood. Thickets of vegetation have grown in its wake.” “Most of the loss of ice has come from the thinning due to warming temperatures, said Eran Hood, a University of Alaska Southeast professor of environmental science. She added that the glacier has now largely receded from the lake that bears its name.

These photos show how much Mendenhall Glacier receded between 1993-2010. With the retreating glacier, wildlife is returning as is a longburied forest. The Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area is under the guidance of the Tongass National Forest. Its website states the glacier actually

CONTINUED FROM FRONT celebration of family,” said Latino Family Center Director Laura Godínez Arce. “We are able to honor those who have passed before us and remember their legacy. I think all families should be able to experience that feeling, and this way, we allow those that are not familiar with it to experience it as well.” An ofrenda will be located in the museum lobby Oct. 25-Nov. 4. These altars are the most prominent feature in the celebration because they show the souls the way home. The altars make the souls (animas) feel welcome and show they have not been forgotten. Most altars feature photos, personal items, candles, food (including candy and fruit), flowers, salt and religious elements. “A family or person doing an ofrenda usually uses the things that the person that passes away liked the most,” Godínez Arce said. “It can be food, drinks, games, hobbies. So, it can be very different from altar to altar. Usually, you will have the four elements: water, earth, air, and fire. Water is for the souls to drink, earth can be represented by bread, air by the papel picado (confetti) and fire by the candles. You also add a portrait of the family member you are honoring.” Throughout the day, there will be live dance and music performances and a trivia game from the 2022 Kearns Academy robotics club. Visitors
will get to make a Día de Los Muertos-themed craft, get their face painted and enjoy popcorn and pan de muerto (bread of the dead) from Enciso’s bakery. Kids will also have a chance to contribute to the community ofrenda and get their photo taken with Catrin and Catrina. La Catrina, also known as the Lady of Death, is one of the most recognizable figures of Day of the Dead, a towering female skeleton with vibrant make up and a flamboyant feathery hat. She was worshipped by the Aztecs and protected their departed loved ones, guiding them through their final stages of the life and death cycles. Men and women who paint their faces like skulls like La Catrina are called calaveras. History It is believed the practice of rituals celebrating past ancestors have existed for more than 3,000 years. What is known as the Día de los Muertos was observed by Aztecs and other peoples for an entire month. They felt mourning the dead was disrespectful. During the celebration, families gather to honor their departed loved ones. It is both a sacred and joyous occasion, with plenty of food, lots of flowers, visits with family members and nostalgic stories about those who have died. The colors yellow and orange are used in
MENDENHALL CONTINUED FROM FRONT snowfall needs to increase, the glacier’s rate of melt needs to decrease, or both. The Tongass agency is proposing new trails and parking areas, an additional visitor center and public use cabins at a lakeside campground. Researchers do not expect the glacier to disappear completely for at least a century. Mendenhall Thomas Corwin Mendenhall, 18411924, was the son of Mordecai and Charity Beeson Mendenhall. Mordecai was a first cousin to James Mendenhall, the grandfather of Richard Mendenhall, whose house still stands at 603 W. Main St. in Jamestown. He was named after the governor of Ohio who later became secretary of the Treasury and minister to Mexico. Young Mendenhall was a true renaissance man, acquiring knowledge in more than one field. He attended a teacher’s college when he was 18. He has been described as an autodidact, meaning self-taught, leading to the belief that he studied things that interested him without benefit of instructors. Mendenhall studied astronomy, mathematics, physics, mechanics, surveying and more. He was elected to the first faculty of Ohio State University in 1873. It was said he was able to quality as a professor under the definition that a professor was “a student who can also teach.” He was well versed in science and became the chair of physics and mechanics. In 1878 Mendenhall was appointed the first professor of physics at the University of Tokyo. While there, he studied meteorology and geophysics. He returned to Ohio State University in 1881 to devote himself to physics. Next, Mendenhall accepted a professorship of electrical science with the U.S. Signal Corps in Washington, D.C., in 1884. Here, he established the earliest stations in the country to observe earthquakes, following the great earthquake in Charleston, S.C., in 1886. He also observed how lightning worked and investigated methods to determine ground temperature. Mendenhall later become superintendent

Thomas Corwin Mendenhall of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1889. While there, he advocated for the adoption of the metric system and worked on a relative gravimetric survey and was sent to Alaska to solve a boundary dispute between Alaska and Canada. The Mendenhall Valley and Glacier in Juneau, Alaska, were named for him in 1892.
A mad scientist?
As a physics professor, Mendenhall liked to experiment. One noted experiment sounds like it would be appropriate for a Halloween haunted house. Mendenhall was interested in electricity. In 1872, while a teacher at what was then Columbus High School in Ohio, he decided to test a theory that a dead body could be brought back to life through electric shock. Obtaining the corpse of a recently-hanged prisoner at the Ohio Penitentiary, Mendenhall used electric shocks in an attempt to reanimate John Barclay who had been hanged earlier in the day. A history of Columbus High School records the event which was performed in front of State Supreme Court judges and other witnesses, including a reporter for the Police Gazette: “In so far as anyone knew,” the history said, “the Judges might have to pass upon the uncanny question of Barclay’s legal status as a living person who had already suffered the death penalty. However, they were spared that embarrassing situation.” Needless to say, the experiment obviously did not succeed.

decorations, ofrendas and clothing to symbolize marigolds, the sun and light. “The marigolds are called Cempasúchil,” Godinez Arce said. “They guide the souls to the altars with their smell and color. Their smell is really strong so you may like or hate it. They do not smell like the marigolds we have here.” People dressed as skeletons (calacas) dance and sing as the morbid side of death is forgotten under joyful memories. “Sugar skulls are made of alfeñiqués, a mixture of sugar, hot water and other ingredients,” Godinez Arce said. “They are used as decoration for the ofrendas but can also be eaten. Sometimes they have the name of the person that passed away and they are the representation of their soul. The Mexican government declared it a public holiday in 1960 and it was added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) Representative List of Humanity’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008. Other countries such as China, CamboDía, North and South Korea, and Nepal, along with areas of the United States, also celebrate similar customs. Anyone who wants to learn more about this Hispanic celebration is invited to visit the High Point Museum for Día de los Muertos.
LIBRARY
CONTINUED FROM FRONT books to serving as president of the Friends of the Jamestown Library. “I am a really big reader, and I love libraries,” Regan said. “When I heard the building was going to be a library, I attended an interest session and knew I wanted to volunteer there.” Regan says a lot about the library appeals to people from the beauty of the building itself to the memories its evokes. “We do all we can to make everyone who comes here feel welcome,” she said. “Our number one focus is to help them find what they enjoy reading, especially children. If we do not have what someone wants, we can get it through an inter-library loan. Our waiting list for popular books are often shorter than at other libraries and if something is extremely popular we will buy more copies. “This is such a satisfying place to volunteer. It is my happy place.” Three major reasons Carol Mehl likes to volunteer at the library are her love of the building, love of reading, and joy she gets in helping people. She has volunteered for 11 years, always on Tuesday mornings. “I have met so many people I would not have met otherwise,” Mehl said. “I especially like helping someone select a book and having them tell me how much they enjoyed it when it is returned.” Having the opportunity to see and check out new books as they come into the library and being exposed to new authors is another perk for Mehl. Christine James agrees with Mehl that getting new books as soon as they arrive is special. James has volunteered at the library since 2010. “This building is quaint, but it has a really good collection for its size,” said James, a former teacher who has also worked in another small public library. “If you love books, you are surrounded by them here.” Although admitting she is not much of a reader, Patricia, who is fulfilling required community service by working at the library, has already been impressed by what she has experienced. “I like the quiet here and the opportunity to learn how a library works,” she said.
“Perhaps this will encourage me to get more into reading,” she added with a smile. Two of the youngest volunteers are twin sisters Triniti and MacKenzi Cabiness, seniors attending high school at Guilford Technical Community College. They volunteer at the library to get school credit for community service hours. “I enjoy meeting people and seeing what the children check out,” MacKenzi said. “Some of the books they get are the same ones I read in elementary school.” Triniti likes to shelve books because she often sees ones that look interesting, which she can check out. The girls intend to volunteer for the rest of the school year as time allows. “I would recommend volunteering here to other young people,” Triniti said. “It is a nice environment.” Sharon Owen began volunteering at the library approximately 11 years ago, shortly after retiring from her job as a teacher. “My husband Steve encouraged me to volunteer, to give back to the community,” she said. “He suggested several possibilities including the library. I love to read and that sounded like a good fit. I have learned a lot working here and am glad I chose to do it. “Meeting people is my favorite part, along with sharing some of the history of the building. I absolutely recommend volunteering at the library to others. At first it was just a good place to volunteer, but now it is time I enjoy. There is nothing about it that I do not like. I feel privileged to be a part of what goes on there. I feel appreciated for what I do.”
Want to volunteer? Volunteers must be 16 or older. Opportunities and applications can be found online at jamestownpubliclibrary.com. Click on the tab About, and on Volunteer Opportunities from the drop-down menu. Print out the application, fill it out and bring it to the library to meet the manager. “I appreciate how much effort was put into making this building a library and for all that the volunteers do,” McGaha said. “But we could use more volunteers and need younger people to step up to keep it going.”

Spooktacular Spiced Dark Chocolate Brownie Pear-fect for Halloween BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME Are you ready for a ghoulishly delightful and creatively creepy dessert? This recipe may be a little unorthodox, but the results are sure to impress your Halloween party guests. We’re taking the classic boxed brownie mix and turning it into something extraordinary. With a few simple tweaks and the addition of sculpted pears, you’ll have a dessert that’s both delicious and fun. Since we’re on the subject, here’s how to give all your boxed brownie mixes a miraculous makeover. To the recipe on the box, consider these enhancements: Replace the oil with melted butter. Add an extra egg or just the yolk for extra richness. Swap out the water with coffee for a flavor boost. Include a teaspoon of flavoring like vanilla or almond. And lastly, always stir the batter by hand, no need for a hand mixer. By making these changes, no one will ever guess that you’re using a boxed mix, and you’ll end up with a luscious, homemade-like brownie. This Spooktacular PearInfused Dark Chocolate Brownie Cake is a Halloween masterpiece, blending the richness of ginger and dark chocolate with the sweetness of pears in a creative and fun dessert.

tallized ginger with a teaspoon of granulated sugar (this helps prevent sticking). You’ll need about 1/4 cup. Set aside. Melt the butter, set aside. In two small bowls, separate the eggs. Add the second egg yolk and most of the white to the first 1/4 cup crystallized ginger, egg and reserve about a tablefinely minced 2 teaspoons granulated sugar spoon of the egg white for later as a glaze. (divided) In a mixing bowl, combine 1/3 cup melted butter the boxed brownie mix with the 1 whole egg dried and crystallized ginger. 1 egg, separated Add the melted butter, coffee 1 (18-ounce) boxed supreme (or water), and the eggs. Stir by dark chocolate chunk hand until just combined. Avoid brownie mix over-mixing. 2 teaspoons dried ground Pour the brownie batter into ginger the prepared springform pan and 1/4 cup cold coffee or water bake at 350 F for 15 minutes. 3 fresh unpeeled ripe Bosc pears While the brownie partially bakes, it’s time to sculpt the 1 tablespoon cornstarch pears into skull shapes. Wash the pears but do not Preheat your oven to 350 F and generously grease a 9-inch peel them. Cut them in half lengthwise and use a small springform pan. Begin by mincing the crys- spoon or apple corer to remove
the core and the vein that runs to the top stem. Position the halved pear so the flat side is down and the larger end of the pear is on top. Use a small spoon or apple corer to scoop out two holes for the eyes, then cut out the nose with a very small spoon or a straw. Use a paring knife to score the smaller end to look like teeth. Drain excess moisture by placing them flat side down on paper towels. By now, your brownie should be partially baked. Remove the brownie and reduce the oven temperature to 300 F. On a small plate, combine cornstarch with a teaspoon of sugar. Dip the cut side of each pear into the cornstarch mixture before placing them artistically on top of the partially baked brownie. Whip the reserved egg white with a teaspoon of sugar until frothy. Brush this glaze over the skulls. Return the skull-infested brownie to the oven for 50 minutes. Your guests will be thrilled by the hauntingly delicious creation you’ve prepared. Enjoy! Here's A Tip BY JOANN DERSON NOW HERE'S A TIP • It’s (past) time to weatherize your home. Temperatures are dropping, and if you haven’t done it yet, don’t sweat it. We have a few ideas for you. Here are mine: Layer up and keep a sweater on when lounging about the house. Extra clothes don’t cost anything to wear, and they don’t dry out the air, either! — JoAnn • Heavy drapes can be a great investment to draft-proof your windows. Best are insulation-lined, but you can double hang some good quality curtains to get a similar effect. • One of the best investments I made was a water heater cover for my unit. It’s in the garage, and it gets very cold in there. The blanket was easy to install, and it keeps my water heater from having to work to keep all that water heated. It wasn’t very expensive. — R.A. in Washington • Don’t overlook your outlets when weatherproofing. They are really just a hole that is covered by a plastic plate. The hardware store sells fireproof insulated inserts that work very well to keep electrical boxes from stealing your house heat. — M.M. in Indiana • Draft dodgers, or door snakes, are easy to make and provide reasonable protection against drafts. To make one for yourself, you’ll need a pair of thick tights, fabric scraps cut into inch-wide strips and a big bag of rice. Cut the tights off into two long leg portions. Stuff them with fabric scraps and then add rice to give weight and fill in the holes. When the long “socks” are full, tie them off. Lay them out along the threshold, pushing them tight against the door, where they will block the draft!
