’Tis the season to sing

By nOrma B. dennis FReeLAnCe WRITeR ndworddesign@gmail.com Some people call December the most wonderful time of the year. It certainly can be one of the busiest. Ragsdale choral director Marcus Young, also a J.V. boys’ basketball coach, came straight from a game to accompany choral students as they sang at a special meeting of the Jamestown Rotary Club Dec. 12. Several of the students were leaving the performance to go back to school to participate

in a band concert. But for a brief period of time, all focus was on singing as the group entertained their audience with a variety of songs that highlighted their vocal skills and delighted their listeners. Past experience — as a member of his high school chorus and a member of another civic club before coming to Jamestown — influenced Bob Callicutt to invite the group from RagsPhoto by Norma B. Dennis dale to sing at the James- to start the program at a recent Jamestown rotary town Rotary Club meeting. Club meeting, samantha Blackwelder, a junior at ragsdale High school, led the Honors Choir in sevsee sing, PAGe 2 eral numbers.

The Town of Jamestown will be closed Monday, Dec. 25, through Wednesday, Dec. 27, in observance of the Christmas holiday and on Jan. 1, 2024, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. Garbage and recycling schedules will be impacted Dec. 26 and 27. Tuesday’s normal pickup will be collected on Thursday, Dec. 28 and Wednesday’s normal pickup will be collected on Friday, Dec. 29. That is a two-day delay from your normal pickup. There will not be any impact for the New Year’s holiday week and all collections will be on their normal schedule. As a reminder, all waste must be placed within the can and the lid must close to allow our crews to service your container. Have an event that you think needs to be included in About Town? Dec. 20 is shortest day of year By CarOl BrOOKs FReeLAnCe WRITeR cab1hp@gmail.com Most everyone has heard the phrase, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.” With the winter solstice coming at 10:27 p.m. Dec. 21, signifying the beginning of winter, we can say assuredly, “It’s summer somewhere.” That somewhere would be locations in the Southern Hemisphere. Australia is known to have opposite seasons than in the Northern Hemisphere. For us in North Carolina and other places, it is also the shortest day of the year, nearly nine hours less daylight than the longest day of the year. The first full day of winter is Dec. 22. Many of us hate going home from work in the dark at 5 p.m. at this time of year. The days will begin to get longer, and therefore lighter, as we work our way into the new year — but it will still mean it will get dark before you get home, at least for a while. see day, PAGe 2

Disinfectant brings smell, taste to water — but it’s safe By CarOl BrOOKs FReeLAnCe WRITeR cab1hp@gmail.com Does your water smell like bleach or a swimming pool? Not realizing the cause, some people believe there is a problem with their pipes and run baking soda down the drain thinking that would clear up the smell. No luck. The smell comes from changing from chloramines to chlorine as a disinfectant in the water. It’s been done before but it seems to smell stronger this year. It’s hard to believe it is safe for us and our pets to consume. But the smell or taste will decrease or go away totally as the system stabilizes and people get used to it. The level of chlorine is much less than is in a swimming pool. “The partners in the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority (PTRWA) switched from chloramines to free chlorine in early December,” said Paul Blanchard, Jamestown’s public services director of the temporary switch. “We periodically change disinfectants to meet state and federal requirements and to provide safe and depend-

able drinking water. Both disinfectants provide safe drinking water, and some people notice the change when the switch occurs.” Free chlorine is a slightly stronger disinfectant than chloramines. PTRWA uses it periodically in the water to kill bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that cause illness. Disinfection of drinking water began in the early 1900s when waterborne diseases like typhoid fever and dysentery were common. Disinfection is now required for public water systems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states water treated with chlorine is safe to drink as the levels are low. Also,

bathing is safe as chlorine cannot enter the body through skin. However, some people could experience mild skin irritation. There are some things the EPA recommends residents do to lessen the taste or smell: Put a pitcher of water in the refrigerator and let it sit uncovered for a few hours. This will allow the chlorine smell to leave the water. Refill after 24 hours. Use cold water for all drinking water. Cold water has fewer taste and smell concerns. Using cold water also makes the water less likely to absorb lead and copper from plumbing. Use a filter. All water treatment units, even those in your home, require regular maintenance to work properly. Water

treatment units that are not properly maintained will lose their effectiveness over time. In some cases, unmaintained units can make water quality worse and make you sick. Boil the tap water before using. People on kidney dialysis should contact their doctors or dialysis center with questions. The Town of Jamestown issued a press release several weeks ago stating the changeover would begin Dec. 2, 2023, and end the week of May 5, 2024, but Blanchard believes that has changed. “Regarding the schedule, we will use free chlorine until mid-April or so,” he said. “The partners wanted to begin the changeover between Thanksgiving and Christmas. “We switch back after the cold weather season ends so we will not freeze water on roads when flushing hydrants. Furthermore, we will wait until after the International Home Furnishings Market to switch back to chloramines.” Any questions should be directed to the Town Hall at 336-454-1138.

Tour of homes highlights holiday style By nOrma B. dennis FReeLAnCe WRITeR ndworddesign@gmail.com

Friends are all smiles as they gather around one of the many decorated trees at the home of Janie Underwood and Bubba Judy.

Some people may still be recovering from being housebound during Covid and are just ready to get out and about. Others are interested in seeing the three beautiful homes on display in Sedgefield and still others hope to gain Christmas decorating ideas. Whatever the reason, the 2023 Holiday Tour of Homes sponsored by the Sedgefield Colony Garden Club was one of the largest held during its seven-year run. In addition to ticket sales two baskets filled with bourbon or wine were raffled to add to the monies raised at the event. see tOUr, PAGe 2

Closing the year with appreciation (Jamestown News December 13, 2023 Issue) — Gary Haynes was not the chair of the Library Board when it merged with the Old Jamestown School Association. Brock Thomas was chair at that time. Haynes, however, was already a board member of the OJSA. After the two boards merged, Thomas continued to serve as president for a while, after which Haynes took over that position.

COnTInUeD FROM FROnT Sedgefield homes featured in this year’s tour were those of Janie Underwood and Bubba Judy, Jen and Dave Bates, and Tracy and Mike Cooke. Each was decorated throughout with a variety of holiday décor. Members of the garden club were stationed in different rooms to guide the flow of the tours and provide information about the houses. Although homeowners handled some of the decorating, professional designers also played a key role in bringing out the best Christmas flare to compliment the styles of the individual houses. Jennifer Hull’s company DeZigns by Jennifer created a winter wonderland at the home of Tracy and Mike Cooke. One of the most prominent features were the 60 Christmas trees decorated with red ornaments and over 30 thousand lights that bordered each side of the patio pool. Originally from Greensboro, Hull’s business is now based at Lake Norman, but she works throughout the United States as well as other countries. “I got some of my design inspiration for this house when I was working in Italy last week,” Hull said. ABBA Design and Randy McManus Designs, Inc. also helped style one of the homes. Patty Edmonds noted there was nothing not to like about any of the tour. “It puts you into such a Christmas spirit,” she said, “and it is for a good cause.” As a Realtor, her friend Kaye Brinkley says she likes to get design ideas she can pass on to her clients. “It’s fun to see the homes in your neighborhood,” said Patty Harrington. The Holiday Tour of Homes is a major fundraiser for the Sedgefield Colony Garden Club, which was founded in 1962. It provides members with funds to participate in a number of local charitable projects. In the

This year, the event was a benefit for Feeding Lisa’s Kids, which was started by Lisa Hawley, owner of Southern Roots Restaurant in Jamestown. Feeding Lisa’s Kids provides for children and families in the greater High Point area who would otherwise go without adequate food. Many who took the tours were impressed they are used to help others in need. Some have been to the tours since they started, but for Steve Brugnoli, this year was his first. “Seeing the spirit of Christmas everywhere is one thing,” Brugnoli said. “But for people to share their beautiful homes for a good cause is amazing.” Club member Katharine Byerly agreed. Having fun while helping others is a good thing.

COnTInUeD FROM FROnT “I had the opportunity to hear one of Marcus’s choral groups sing and knew our Rotarians and guests would love to hear them,” Callicutt said. He was right. The group’s performance received a standing ovation. The singers were part of the school’s Honor Choir and included two alumni who also participated with the group. High school junior Samantha Blackwelder conducted several numbers to start the entertainment. “These students have been given a gift,” Young said, referring to their musical abilities. “I try to push them to be even better in

hopes that some will continue to use these gifts in the future.” Young noted that his students love to perform and are willing to sing wherever they are invited. They have preformed at elementary schools, assisted living facilities and Veterans Day events, among other places. “We will sing anywhere someone wants music,” Young said. Raised in a musical family, Young grew up participating in music at his church. He played saxophone in the marching and concert bands at Hunter Huss High School in Gastonia, N.C., and was a member of the Honors Choral group as well. He graduated from the University of North Carolina — Greensboro with a degree in music education. “My high school chorus teacher inspired me to teach,” Young said. “I always loved to sing and was willing to audition. She gave me chances to lead and warm up the class. That, along with what I did in church, made me want to give someone else what I love and enjoy.” Young has directed choirs at church and schools for 22 years. He has worked with Guilford County Schools for six years and been at Ragsdale High School for two. The various groups in the choral department at Rags-

dale include a total of 120 students. In June of 2024, Young and one of his choral groups, along with another singing group, will have the honor of performing at Carnage Hall. After several days of practice, Jordan Lee, conductor at Penn-Griffin School of the Arts in High Point, will conduct the New York concert on the 16th of the month. Students are currently raising funds to help pay for the trip. There was a charge of $10 to attend their recent concert at school. They did not conduct tickets sales, but placed a box outside the auditorium to collect donations. Candy sales and letters seeking sponsorships also are part of the plan to raise money. Those who wish to support this musical experience for the Ragsdale Choral group may make checks payable to Ragsdale Rhythm & Rhapsody Boosters and mail them to Ragsdale High School, 1000 Lucy Ragsdale Dr., Jamestown, NC 27282. Young sees music as more than a class in school or a pastime. “Music is a universal language,” he said. “It heals, soothes and speaks when you do not have the words to say. I hope students will be encouraged to use their experiences with music as stepping stones to the next level in life.”

COnTInUeD FROM FROnT There are some perks that come with the winter solstice. One is an alert that Christmas is right around the corner. The Scandinavian festival of Jul, more familiar to us as Yule, is a 12-day festival centered around the solstice. It gave birth to many of the most familiar Christmas traditions including the Christmas tree, the Yule log and the Christmas wreath. The Yule log is believed to burn through the night of the winter solstice to help bring light to the darkest night of the year and to help re-light the sun. We also light bonfires during this period. There is a reason for this change in daylight. Sci-

entifically, the North Pole points away from the sun at this time of year, which is why it is so much colder in the Northern Hemisphere. For people living in the Southern Hemisphere, the South Pole is pointing towards the Sun. The term “solstice” comes from the Latin words “sol” (Sun) and “sister” (to stand still) because, during the solstice, the angle between the Sun’s rays and the plane of the Earth’s equator (called declination) appears to stand still. The summer solstice occurred June 21 of this year when days began to get shorter and culminates Dec. 21.

Finding the Lost Colony The story of the Lost Colony is North Carolina’s founding myth. Except for one thing, it may be the best founding myth of any U.S. state or any country in the world. It goes like this: A group of about 100 people who lived in England sailed across the ocean, and settled on an island in what is now North By d.g. martin Carolina. his beautiful maps are recognized as treasures today. Thankfully, the new book contains illustrations of his best work. White first came to America in 1585 as the illustrator for the findings of a group of scientists and information seekers. On his second trip he earned the position of governor, having recruited most of the new colonists. He was sent back to England in 1587 for supplies, leaving behind his daughter and new granddaughter on Roanoke Island to make their way with the other colonists. When White finally returned to the island in 1590, all the colonists were gone, leaving only the Croatoan carving as a clue. The new book describes how in 2012, thanks in large part to the suggestion of board member Brent Lane, a patch on one of John White’s maps was found to cover a symbol for a fort about 50 miles from Roanoke Island near the intersection of the Roanoke River and Albemarle Sound. This location in Bertie County became known as “Site X,” and the foundation sponsored extensive archeological research to learn if the colonists might have relocated there. That research will continue, but one authority, foundation board member and president of the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation, James Horn, speculates

that the settlers moved west from Roanoke Island towards Site X. At Site X, Horn writes, “White’s settlers likely remained there for a few years patiently waiting for his return, but as time passed and it became less and less likely that he would come back, they settled down and intermarried with neighboring Indians along the Chowan.” Horn speculates, “By the early 17th century most had spent the greater part of their adult lives with the Indian peoples. Then perhaps about the same time as the first Jamestown expedition arrived in the James River in the spring of 1607, a catastrophe may have overwhelmed them. Jamestown leaders were told that a large Powhatan war party had killed most of the settlers and their Indian kin.” Horn’s informed speculation gives our founding myth an ending, even if it is not the ending we were hoping for. The ongoing work of the foundation will continue to develop other possible answers. In the meantime, “Excavating the Lost Colony Mystery” is a book that should be in the library of everyone who celebrates our founding myth.

GTCC esports team captures NJCAAE national championship and number 1 national ranking Press release In just its second year of existence, Guilford Technical Community College’s Esports program has claimed a National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) national championship with its Rainbow Six Siege team officially ranked number one in the country. The Titans defeated Trinity Valley Community College from Athens, Texas, 3-2 in a marathon sixhour match to capture the Rainbow Six Siege 2023 fall national title. Trinity Valley was undefeated coming into the title match and had beaten GTCC in a regional tournament match prior to Thanksgiving. The championship match began at 10 p.m. on December 1 and wasn’t decided until 3:58 a.m. on December 2. GTCC defeated Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology in a semifinal matchup on December 1 and less than 20 minutes later the championship match began.

“From a rough start back in their first competition in the spring 2023 season, the Rainbow Six Siege team embodied the values of teamwork and dedication as they fought against the odds for victories over multiple seasoned teams to claim the national title,” said Tu Nguyen, GTCC’s esports coach. “All team members work in addition to being fulltime students and while competing in a collegiate sports league which can take 10 to 20 hours a week during playoffs.” Members of the championship Rainbow Six Siege team included team captain Diego Zeballos, Noe Zaragoza-Tapia, DeShawn Surgeon Jr., Fernando Ramos, and Tristan Fox. It was the second season these team members competed together. Second year student and team captain Diego Zeballos shares what it meant to bring home the championship with his teammates. “From being counted out to counting our victories, our underdog story exploded into a symphony of triumph at the National

GTCC played in a seven-week regular fall season followed by three rounds of matches in the regional tournament to qualify for the national tournament. GTCC teams competed in 10 titles this season and five advanced to the national tournament.

“We launched esports in August of 2022 and have been blown away with the student interest and support,” said Anthony Clarke Ph.D, GTCC president. “We’re extremely appreciative of our faculty and staff for working with our athletes and supporting the growth of our intercollegiate esports program. We know esports is not only a fun and exciting sport, but that it also builds leadership and communications skills for our athletes, skills which are highly valued by our employer partners. Coach Nguyen

has done a tremendous job building our esports program from the ground up and we appreciate his hard work and dedication for our student athletes and the college.” Esports is online, competitive video gaming played through computers and electronic consoles, which allows interactive, virtual reality, multiple player video games. Anderson’s directing style is right on brand, as always, with a beautiful pastel aesthetic and a clever visual design that feels akin to watching theatre. Out now. (Amazon Prime Video)

— This comedic British sitcom centers on a single mother named Deb and her two daughters, Josie and Billie, played by two real-life sisters. Created by up-and-coming writer Kat Sadler, who stars as Josie, the series is described as a family sitcom about trauma. Through very punchy dialogue, it takes an honest and hilarious approach in showing the crunchy and awkward moments between family members that many people can relate to. The show seems similar to another British show, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag, which also touches on family trauma and finding a place in the world after a shaky upbringing. (Hulu)

Cranberry Orange Cake: By Patti diamOnd DIVAS On A DIMe

A Festive Slice of Joy

Here's A Tip By JOann dersOn nOW HeRe'S A TIP • It might be hard to get or stay motivated for exercise once we’ve dipped into shortened days and lower temperatures. Exercise is so important to your health, so get it any way you can. Did you know that a half-hour snowball fight can burn 100 calories? Get out there and enjoy the winter weather! — JoAnn • If you frequently face snow in your area, invest in a pair of running shoes that are designed for trail running. They have deeper cleats for better traction. Some are even waterproof. This will encourage you to run when it’s been snowing! • “To help your sneakers dry faster, remove the laces and sock liner and hang separately. Stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture. Hang them to dry on a sturdy hook or line, but not too close to a heater, as it’s possible to break down the support materials that way.” — E.D. in Minnesota • “If you are outdoors on freezing days, you know to dress in layers. When you exercise outside, you do that too, but be prepared to strip off a layer if you get overheated. I have a carabiner clip on my waistband, and I can clip my outer light jacket to it, or even my fleece, through a button hole.” — P.S. in Virginia • “Here’s a tip about sledding in a pinch: A laundry basket can make a fine sled for a small, sturdy kid, especially if you are blessed with surprised snow! If you attach a rope or belt to one side of the basket, it’s easy to pull the kids along.” — M.B. in Missouri
