By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Many people collect things from events that happened in their lifetime — a piece of wedding cake, post cards from places visited, newspaper clippings of the twin towers that were destroyed on 9/11, T-shirts declaring their team’s tournament championship or a musician’s tour. Effley Howard, Sr., 66, has collected over 5,000 Ebony and Jet magazines and others that chronicle the history of Black America. Many of these magazines, along with special ones featuring local celebrities, Black Panthers, the Jackson 5 and others, are on display until March 2 at the High Point Museum. “I’ve always liked the Ebonys and Jets, but started collecting probably about 40 years ago,” Howard said. His interest was sparked by the stories of integration he heard as a child — Brown vs. Board of Education, Rosa Parks, Freedom Riders, etc. Howard began the Thankful Heritage Museum and its website in 1993 after hearing his family talk about how far Blacks have come in America. “My children, because of the Ebonys, learned a lot of history when their teachers started talking about Black History Month,” Howard said. “[The teachers] said, ‘Where did you learn?’ My children said ‘my father.’” see print, page 2

Rhonda Sepulveda was looking for 100 good men – and she found them. On Feb. 8, 100 men showed up at Jamestown Elementary School to welcome students in honor of the 100th day of school. In addition to parents were members of the community, including businessmen, athletes, college students, deputies, firefighters and even a librarian. “We felt this was a good way to celebrate the 100th day of school and promote positive male presence within the school community,” Sepulveda, a member of office support at the school, said. “The community showed up in a mighty way.” Parents were excited and the event was already trending on the Internet before the morning was over. “I saw this online at a school in Georgia and brought the idea up to our principal (Christa DiBonaventure),” Sepulveda said. “We only had about one week to pull it all together.” Helping Sepulveda organize

continued from front the special occasion were Kabyn Pearson and Timothy McMasters, both alumni of the school who now have children who attend there. “I am active with things that happen at the school and volunteer through the PTA as time allows,” McMasters said. “I was happy to bring light to men, motiving them to step up. I also love magical moments and today was one of them. It was great to see the men excited and to see them greet the children with that excitement and love. They sacrificed their time and braved the cold to do it. I think this opened the door for men to participate in other events. “The teachers, school staff, parents and community came together to make it special for the children. It was an ‘It takes a village’ moment.” Before the event, McMasters had helped reach out to men at work and in his neighborhood. He also pulled in vendors to support the event with refreshments for the volunteers. Publix was one business that, according to McMasters, went above and beyond donating a large variety of bakery items. During the event, McMasters could be found standing in the middle of the road on Potter Drive, waving to the parents and students as they arrived, directing traffic

into and out of one of the car lines. All together, there were six stations at which men greeted students as they arrived, including those getting off buses and out of cars. The special welcome to school reminded students of what they could accomplish. Many signs the volunteers held said things like “You are 100 days smarter.” In addition to being a celebration of the first 100 days of school, it encouraged students to keep up the good work with only 80 days left in the school year. In the past the first 100 days of school had been celebrated in individual classrooms. This was the first time it had been a schoolwide event.

“The morning was phenomenal,” Sepulveda said. “I have heard nothing but rave reviews. To see all the men come to greet the kids was amazing. Not all the students have a positive male role model and to be greeted by all these men was special. The kids enjoyed it.” Sepulveda was overwhelmed at
the response she received from the community and has been encouraged to do this again next year. “Imagine what can be done if we have over a week to plan it,” she said. “I expect to see this idea spread throughout (Guilford County) and see other schools doing it.”
continued from front The teachers would bring Howard into their classrooms to talk about Black history. Other schools began asking Howard to speak at their schools and class reunions. This was happening while he was working full time at Gilbarco, a manufacturer of fueling equipment. Howard calls himself African American, but recognizes the long history of naming this race, many now considered derogatory. Those other names are only descriptive and do not lend themselves to the people being from a home country, in this case, Africa. Ebony and Jet magazines were published by John H. Johnson, an entrepreneur who also owned a hair products business. Ebony, the oldest magazine, followed in the footsteps of Johnson’s earlier Negro Digest, in highlighting family life in the Black community. “It was so important to have magazines like Ebony and Jet,” Howard said. “Up until 1975 we only had Negro History Week, which Carter G. Woodson started in 1926, but in 1968 they changed it to Black History Week. “The magazines were so important because a magazine picture is worth a thousand words. When Johnson started the magazine in 1945, Black people were able to see themselves as a positive image. It was no longer like the Tarzans and the Buckwheat and Stymie from ‘The Little Rascals,’ or ‘Our Gang,’ comedies of the 1930s. No longer like ‘Amos and Andy,’ which came from blackface.” Blackface was burnt cork or theatrical makeup used by white performers to caricature or stereotype Black people. “Magazines and newspapers date a time in history where you can go and actually read what’s going on at the time,” Howard said. The monthly Ebony prominently featured a large photograph of its feature subject on each cover, certain to grab the eye of those perusing a magazine rack. Dorothy Dandridge, Ella Fitzgerald, scientists, doctors and business people graced the covers. Centerfolds featured bikini-clad beauty queens. The weekly Jet was smaller in size but also was able to feature prominent Blacks across the United States well as up-do-date Top-40 music lists. The week after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus the report was in Jet. North Carolina celebrities featured include actress/singers Fantasia Barrino from High Point and Pam Grier from Winston-Salem; jazz great John Coltrane who grew up in High Point; singers Roberta Flack from Black Mountain, Nina Simone from Tryon and Ben E. King from Henderson; basketball great

Michael Jordan, who grew up in Wilmington; High Point’s Robert Brown; and Ellerbe’s Judge Henry Frye. Jet ceased publication around 2014 except for a few special editions and Ebony did the same in 2016. They exist now only online. Howard says he has read all of the Jet magazines and most of the Ebonys. The display at the High Point Museum is just a small part of Howard’s vast collection. He calls it a traveling museum because he does not have a permanent location, but now that he has retired from Gilbarco, he has time to devote to looking for donors and a location for a permanent home for his collections. He likes the Triad area because there are so many historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and other colleges in the area, not to mention the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro and the history of Woolworth’s sit-ins in High Point and Winston-Salem. He now also has time to finish the book he is writing about Black history. Howard offers workshops and lectures on Black history. The list is available at thankfulheritagemuseum.org. As his family’s historian in Wilkes County and grio — a traditional, West African musician or storyteller who recounts the oral history of a village, family, etc. — as well as a
storyteller and genealogist, Howard not only tells his own family’s history, but through his work with the Thankful Heritage Museum, he tells the history of Blacks in America. The exhibit in High Point is just part of the different categories he has collected, including civil rights materials. Some items date to the 1700s.
Thankful Heritage Museum, Inc. is a 501©(3) non-profit organization. Its mission is “to research and teach African American history, thereby enriching the lives of each individual who views the collection or listens to a lecture series. Thankful Heritage, Inc. is devoted to the preservation of African-American artistic, cultural and historical materials.” Part of the vision statement is “to work towards improving race relations in the community.” Donations are appreciated. The Marvels (PG-13) — After an underwhelming run at the box office, The Marvels starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani is out now on streaming! Larson reprises her role as Captain Marvel, who finds herself facing a new enemy from a different world called Kree. This enemy, Dar-Benn, discovers a Quantum Band that makes traveling through space quick and easy. In creating a new jump point with the Quantum Band, Dar-Benn links Captain Marvel’s powers to none other than Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel herself (Vellani), and an astronaut named Monica Rambeau (Parris). The trio, who now get
inconveniently transported to different locations any time they use their powers, must band together to stop Dar-Benn from exacting revenge on their home worlds. (Disney+) Past Lives (PG-13) — This semi-autobiographical romantic-drama directed by Celine Song was recently nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars — an incredible feat for Song’s directorial debut. Starring The Morning Show’s Greta Lee and Leto’s Teo Yoo, the film follows Na Young and Hae Sung, two South Korean 12-year-olds who have crushes on each other but are forced apart after Na Young’s family moves to Canada. They virtually

Past Lives perfectly encompasses the joy and sorrow that comes with knowing you found the right person, just not at the right time. Out now. (Paramount+)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (tVMA) — This spy comedy series is based on the iconic 2005 film of the same name starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie but puts a quirkier spin on the original story. Donald Glover (Atlanta) portrays John Smith, opposite Maya Erskine’s Jane Smith. The two strangers are spies who adapt their respective iden-
tities in order to impersonate a married couple while they complete a high-risk mission every week. And aren’t real feelings bound to get involved when two lonely people are put in an enticing arranged marriage? The series features a handful of actors we know and love, including Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Alexander Skarsgard, Eiza Gonzalez and Ron Perlman. All episodes are available now. (Amazon Prime Video) The Pod Generation (PG-13) — In this sci-fi romantic-comedy, Alvy and Rachel Novy are a married couple in a futuristic version of New York who wish to grow their family, but with Rachel’s
bustling career and a promotion on the way, the timing isn’t right for her to have the child herself. However, her company gives her another option: a stipend to conceive a child through the sleek, high-tech Pegazus Womb Center. There, babies are conceived, grown and even birthed through an artificial womb called a pod. If Rachel can convince Alvy to put aside his beliefs to try the technology, the couple can finally begin a life of parenthood. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) lead the film, out on Feb. 16. (Hulu) ©2024 King Features Synd., Inc.
Strange But True By lUCie winBoRne • Researchers have developed an algorithm that transforms complex data into musical sounds. • In 2003, Marvel successfully argued in a U.S. court that mutants were “nonhuman creatures” and, therefore, toys, in order to save on taxes, since X-Men action figures were being imported as dolls but toys have a lower tariff. • An ostrich can run faster than a horse. • Seventy-five percent of Japanese homes boast a high-tech toilet, the latest models of which eliminate the need for toilet paper, keep you warm, check your blood pressure, play the

To celebrate his contributions, I have revised a column I wrote in 2009 about his book of short stories, “Ancestors and Others: New and Selected Stories.” By d.G. mARtin Asserting that his novels ONe ON ONe and short stories were equally as great as his poetry could get you in trouble with Chappell’s North Carolina Botanical Garden, “Linadoring poetry fans. Cliff Butler, a retired pharmacist who grew up in Dunn, could follow the country furniture store delivery team hauling a new freezer, the surprise “Christmas Gift” for a farmer’s wife, who had ironed tobacco leaves to get high bids of the buyers for her husband’s crop. It was easy to tag Chappell’s stories as aimed at prospective men readers. But Chappell appeals to women, too, especially those who want to understand men and their crazy doings and firm friendships. Some stories are aimed right at women, as in “Gift of Roses,” the poignant tale of a blind woman who rescues heritage roses. Greensboro’s Margaret Arbuckle, who once tried to save an ancient rose bush from the advancing waters of Lake Norman, might also understand. A few weeks before Chappell’s death, my family also lost a great poet and chronicler of mountain life, my brother, Mike Martin, who also died at age 87. While I will miss both of them, I will always be grateful for their opening doors for me to see the world in richer and deeper ways. D.G. Martin, a retired lawyer, served as UNC-System’s vice president for public affairs and hosted PBS-NC’s North Carolina Bookwatch.
Here's A Tip By JoAnn deRSon NOw Here'S a tiP • From L.D.W. in Illinois: “When I have a recipe, I put all the ingredients on the counter, and as I use each one, I put it away. My daughter and daughter-in-law like the idea, as they at one time or another forget an item.” I like that one, too, L.D.W. A well-prepared cook makes a delicious meal. • “To wrap a baby gift in unforgettable gift wrap, circle the announcement in the paper with a colorful marker, then use the newsprint to wrap your package. It has always gotten rave reviews from recipients.” — R.L. in Virginia • Another reason to get the newspaper: Crushed newspaper makes a great rag for shining windows in your home and in the car. No lint left behind! • “When thickening soup, don’t overlook instant potato mix. It’s perfect for making a thin broth into a nice, thick stew sauce, and it’s pretty cheap. It only takes a couple of tablespoons.” — I.F. in Utak • Want delicious fried chicken crust but not the dripping oil? Baste chicken pieces with mayonnaise, then dredge in crushed cracker crumbs mixed with a bit of flour. Bake and enjoy. • If your plastic food containers develop an unpleasant odor, never fear: Scrub with a paste of baking soda and lemon juice. Rinse and air-dry.
