ERNIE HUDSON has been described as a character actor, but perhaps he’s best described as an actor of character, one who imbues each role with a distinctive presence and personality. 12 If Dirty Rotten Scoundrels surpassed Bedtime Story, THE HUSTLE is a giant step back. Here is a quintessential example of an inferior remake, and there’s the palpable sense that Hathaway and Wilson are merely coasting. 14 Since this is the annual Triad’s Best issue, Charles Womack, publisher of YES! Weekly, asked me to add my two cents worth to the festivities. Here, in no particular order, are some of my picks for Triad’s Best, according to categories that OFTEN GO OVERLOOKED... 68 When you hear the name of Greensboro-based band VIVA LA MUERTE, winners of YES! Weekly’s readers’ poll for the Triad’s Best Original Band, you might find yourself wondering what they’re all about. First of all, they’re not a death metal band, though the name loosely translates to “long live death.” They’re prepared for your curiosity.

GUILFORD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE BY KATIE MURAWSKI

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is offering several classes and resources to engage and inform members of the community. Master Corporal Joe Page said some of these classes and resources include the Yellow Dot Program, the Sheriff Citizens Academy, the Sheriff Youth Academy, and vacation safety checks. “Currently, we have got a lot of stuff out there that helps benefit people in the community,” Page said. Page said that the Yellow Dot program is an existing program that has faded into the background. “We are trying to bring it back to the forefront,” he said. Page described the program as assistance to first responders during the “golden hour of emergency situations,” whether it be at someone’s home or while someone is in a vehicle. Page said the Yellow Dot program is a packet of information available at no cost, with no limit and is based on how many family members one has. “You fill out the information, and then you either maintain it at your home or in your glove box, or at both locations. We give you a sticker that you affix to your door or car windshield that notifies first responders in an emergency where to find your medical information,” he said. “So if you have allergies or are allergic [to anything], or you have a special medical condition that they need to be aware of, and you are incapacitated or unable to speak to them, they’ll know what aid to provide you.” The form is available at the Sheriff ’s Office or by calling (336) 641-3378 or emailing jpage0@guilfordcountync.gov. Starting in June, Page said the Sheriff Youth Academy would begin for anyone ages 13 to 18. This two-week program runs from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Page said this class is offered at no cost, and attendees are asked to bring their own lunch. Page said this class is WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

geared to teaching youth about interacting with law enforcement, and first responders such as the Greensboro Bomb Squad, the Greensboro Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services. Starting up Sept. 5 is the Sheriff Citizens Academy, which allows attendees to interact with Sheriff ’s Office employees, learn about their jobs, functions and to inform attendees about how the Sheriff ’s Office is structured. “We give them an opportunity to do some labs, where they actually get to go out to our ranges or ride with our DWI task force personnel.” This two-month long program meets every Thursday night and then every other Saturday. “It is a very comprehensive program that allows individuals/regular citizens to actually get a lot of information about the Sheriff ’s Office and what we do,” Page said. Vacation safety checks are also available to people that live in Guilford County and have been expanded. “If you want to let us know when you are going on vacation, we’ll notify the district office, or you can contact the district office that you live in and let them know,” Page said. “As deputies are out doing their patrols in their zones, they can just drop by and make sure that your house or your apartment is safe.” Page said these programs are intended to benefit the community and help residents feel safer and more informed about their local Sheriff’s Office. “I think everybody should be aware of what the Sheriff ’s Office does,” Page said. “We want to be involved in the community; we want to provide you with classes that will actually be beneficial; classes that allow you to interact with your Sheriff ’s Office and what we provide.” Visit the Guilford County Sheriff ’s Office website (www.guilfordcountync.gov/ourcounty/sheriff-s-office) for more details and to register for classes. !

y favorite restaurant depends on my mood, how much my wife will let me spend, and wherever I’ve been recently. Herewith, the places where I am most likely to go, depending on whatever whim is in place at the moment. (No ranking in the order of placement is intended or implied.) First, let’s acknowledge that two of the Triad’s best restaurants are not in Greensboro. Blue Water Grille (bluewatergrillenc. com) in High Point serves exceptional seafood. Small plates in addition to more conventional appetizers and entrées add value. If you’re not into seafood, the Braised Lamb Shank with molé sauce is worth a drive. St. Jacques at the Burke Manor Inn (burkemanor.com) in Gibsonville (yes, Gibsonville!) is the only provider of classical French cuisine in the area, and they do it very well, indeed. If I had to name a single “best” it would be The Undercurrent (undercurrentrestau-

rant.com), a function not only of creative, stellar cuisine but also of value, growing out of multiple small portion plates that are still large enough even for my appetite. Rainbow Trout with House-Cured Bacon and Lemon-Artichoke Relish; Rack of Lamb in a Madeira reduction; and Seared Sea Scallops with Pancetta and Salsify Cream sauce rank among my first choices here. But three other places could win the “best” designation on any given night. I think Mark’s (marksgreensboro.com) puts together the best vegetable assemblies in the Triad. Several main courses are available in small as well as large plate portions. My favorites are Salmon, Buttermilk Free Range Chicken, Grilled Shrimp with Lobster and Mascarpone-Stuffed Ravioli, and Grilled Veal Chop. The website for The Marisol (themarisol.com) boasts, “since 1997, we’ve been considered one of the best restaurants in the state.” It isn’t braggin’ when it’s true. If you are looking for ingredients of truly exceptional quality, price no object, this is the place. The menu frequently

changes with seasonal emphasis. 1618 Seafood Grille (1618seafoodgrille. com), as the name implies, emphasizes seafood. Seafood Trio, for example, provides portions of Sea Bass, Scallops, and Mahi, with Portobello Mushroom, Pineapple Chutney, and Adobo sauce. Landlocked alternatives are available, as well. The Pan-Seared Chicken Pinwheel is stuffed with spinach and sundried tomato, plus blackened artichoke and crab-stuffed crispy zucchini. B. Christopher’s (bchristophers.com) is my top-ranked steakhouse. Be sure to add fried onion crisps, shoestring French fries, corn crème brûlée, sautéed spinach and/or asparagus with béarnaise sauce to whatever main course you order. I have had so many exceptional meals at two area Italian restaurants, and I could not rate one over the other. Osteria (osteriagso.com) makes fresh pasta--the Strozzapreti with creamy meat sauce, and Maltagliati-Boar Ragu with Porcini Mushrooms are outstanding. My favorite seafood includes Bronzino Marechiara in a tomato-garlic sauce with clams and shrimp. The Veal Chop with Caramelized Onions and Balsamic Reduction is richly flavored. At Salvino (salvinorestaurant. com), I am hard-pressed to stray from Gamberi al Soave and Scallops al Soave-sautéed in lemon, butter and white wine, served with spinach. If an off-menu veal special is available, make sure somebody at the table orders it. I always look forward to Blue Denim (bluedenimgso.com). Start with Crawfish Beignets or Crispy Okra, then move on to any of the traditional Louisiana-style entrées. Michelle’s Kitchen and Table (michelles. kitchen) in Burlington impresses me with Southern-style preparations. Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffles are a good place to start, as well as Shrimp and Grits made with pimiento cheese. As you would expect from their names, Café Pasta and Grille (cafepasta.com) and its sister restaurant, Pastabilities (pastabilitiesgreensboro.com), serve very good pastas. Both flavor and value are emphasized in these establishments. Pastabilities sticks closer to family-style Italian dishes, whereas Café Pasta and Grille ventures somewhat beyond, such as my personal favorite entrée, Almond Crusted Salmon. Imperial Koi (imperialkoigso.com) is my choice for Asian, and sushi, especially. My favorite dish here is Dragon’s Nest-- Avo-

cado stuffed with Sesame Tuna. For a nonAsian choice, get Risotto with Pan-Seared Scallops and Mushrooms. Green Valley Grill (greenvalleygrill.com) and Printworks Bistro (printworksbistro. com) are the restaurants in two of the Triad’s luxury hotels. For a gorgeous setting as well as sophisticated cuisine, these can’t be beat, and are nationally recognized for brunch. In a more casual setting, Reel Seafood Grill (reelseafoodgrill.com) lists the day’s catch on a chalkboard. They also serve a good hamburger. Rody’s Tavern (rodystavern.com) is a sports bar, but unlike so many in the genre, they actually prepare everything from scratch. Outstanding onion rings, French fries, good burgers, fried shrimp and fish. I think Crafted (eatatcrafted.com) is the most original restaurant concept in the area. Two locations prepare tacos and other extremely casual finger food from fresh, quality ingredients, in highly creative ways. Southern Lights Bistro (southernlightsbistro.com) offers breadth in its menu conception, from composed to createyour-own salads, to exceptional soups, burgers, and sandwiches, to more formal entrées, such as Bistro Steak with Mashed Potatoes, Tuscan Meat Loaf, or Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Neese’s Sausage Macaroni and Cheese. Southern-style preparations influence the food at Southern Roots (southernrootsfoods.com) in Jamestown, with particular emphasis on local, fresh vegetables- such as Fried Green Tomato Stack with Applewood Bacon Jam. Over the years, however, preparations have branched out to include international notions. Shrimp are fried or grilled, Thai style. Fried Oysters get a Sriracha aioli. If I am strictly in a sandwich mood, I gravitate to Melt (meltkitchenandbar. com) for paninis. I also get the brussels sprouts, and the Pulled Pork Nachos are a winner, too. As you might gather from this list, I’m really into food. Or to be more precise, lots of food is into me. ! JOHN BATCHELOR has been writing about eating and drinking since 1981. The Triad’s Best chefs say ‘Thanks’

t feels really good being on top, especially if you’re mounted on a list like this. As we check out “our favorites” in this week’s issue, a few alumni make their returns to the top three, and we see some new faces as well.

Best Chef, Forsyth County: Curtis Hackaday, 1703 Restaurant & Catering, Winston-Salem We’ve written about Hackaday before. His dishes are on a level all their own. The chef seemed a bit surprised to hear he’d been named Best Chef in Forsyth two years running. “It’s nice to be recognized for doing what you love.” But Rebecca Zollicoffer, who owns Let It Grow Produce, didn’t seem surprised in the least. “Curtis is so deserving of this award. His dishes are not only truly creative; he is a huge supporter of our local growers and makers and a really nice guy.” Second Place: Travis Myers, Willow’s Bistro, Winston-Salem Myers said the award means even more with the amount of talent in the area. He’s beginning to take his place in leading future chefs. “I am honored and feel the most gratitude from training the next generation of culinary ninjas!” Receiving the news that his executive chef made top two again, owner Will Kingery had only one thing to say: “I taught him everything he knows. Just kidding,” he joked. “He has stayed true to local organic produce and does an amazing job. [He’s] probably one of the cleanest chefs that I’ve ever worked with. We are just so happy to have him on our team, and all around he’s just a good guy.” Myers is well loved in more than just the Triad as North Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association recently named him 2018 Chef of the Year. He received the award after winning the NCRLA Chef Showdown last August. Best Chef, Guilford County: Chris Blackburn, Scrambled Southern Diner, Greensboro Blackburn is a fine dining chef slinging all the breakfast goodies at his casual and hugely popular, Scrambled. Another winner who takes it a second year in a row, Blackburn was blown away. “I’m so humbled. There are so many chefs that WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

are deserving.” Blackburn is working at Scrambled but also focusing on the catering aspect of his business through Josephine’s Catering. “That’s where my creative side comes in.” Blackburn is burning the candle at both ends lately, as Josephine’s Catering is busier than ever. “I’m up at 3 a.m., and I’ve been working later. I’m really tired, but I also have more energy than ever,” he said. And one of his big fans, Brenda Sutton of Fogowood Food, said she’s not surprised. “He’s got some stiff competition, but he still comes out on top.” Best Chef Under 30: Anders Benton, Gia Drink Eat Listen, Greensboro Benton has been a rising star before this year. After a brief stint in the New York City area, Benton returned to Gia with new gusto and even more beautiful dishes. In addition to the “under 30” honor, Benton also received second-place in the Best Chef category in Guilford County. “While I am humbled to be recognized as one of the best chefs in Guilford County, I have to give a lot of credit to those that I work with,” Benton said. “I’m fortunate enough to have a team beside me that also puts passion and creativity above all else. I plan on continuing to push the envelope, bringing the Triad to a whole new playing field of food.” Benton said he’s thankful to the people of the Triad for supporting Gia and especially grateful to his boss, Nino Giamo. “He continues to foster my insanity.” Second Place: Ryan Loflin, Rooster’s: A Noble Grille, Winston-Salem Loflin is getting noticed at this legacy restaurant kitchen after Chef John Bobby left to pursue his own restaurant, and it appears that people are fans. “I’m so thankful to be counted among the best in the Triad,” he said. “We have one of the most fun up-and -coming food scenes around, and none of my dreams could be realized without the immense support from my chef, Brad Pennall, and the wonderful team we’ve built here at Noble’s.” These chefs will all agree that it’s great to be nominated, and given the culinary talent in our area, that is absolutely true. But awards and recognition only mean so much. The best vote you can make is with your dollar by visiting these local restaurants . Congrats, chefs! ! Contrasting the love of art with the Triad’s Best Visual Artist and Art Gallery

T

he Triad is not only blessed with a treasure trove of amazing artists, but it also has a plethora of art galleries, both large and small. If you are not aware Terry Rader of the abundant art scene and good vibes from artists, art Contributor lovers and galleries, you’ll have to get out and explore an entity that is growing faster than summer kudzu across the South. The 2019 Triad’s Best Artist goes to Jordan Morris aka JoMo. Morris creates fun, uncensored art that is inspired by cartoons and pop culture. He transforms dark days to laughter with his quirky, fun-loving sense of humor and is obviously successful in helping people not take themselves too seriously. He has created quite a loyal following that can’t get enough of his funky stickers and private commissions. For the second year in a row, Morris said he was amazed and surprised to learn that he had been voted the Triad’s Best Visual Artist. He said he wasn’t expecting it this year or last year and was so happy to get to keep his crown. Morris didn’t just win in a small way. YES! Weekly editor Katie Murawski said he won 811 votes. “It’s a huge win,” she wrote in a Facebook message. “If you stroll down Tate Street or Walker Avenue, you’ll see his stickers plastered everywhere.” Morris said he creates his art digitally on his Windows Surface Pro. He sells merchandise such as stickers, prints, pins, and T-shirts; but take note, he does not do tattoos as he “absolutely would never draw something on someone’s skin.” He uses his website as his storefront and makes a living by selling his art through social media and by taking commissions. Morris said he has been doing a lot of local art and is also focusing more on his digital presence. Although he admits that he hates social media, Morris said it is a necessary medium for artists today and that he is “totally spoiled by digital and working solo,” because he doesn’t like YES! drawing in crowds. He tries to use local vendors as much as possible. If left up to Morris, he’d prefer to be dog walking more than doing anything else, as that is what he does on the side. He said running his business includes much hard work that people don’t see. Being selfemployed is like an iceberg; your friends, family, and clients only see the product and service above the water, but the rest of the work (below the water) is twice as huge. He admits that he puts work off to the last minute and then sometimes busts things out in 24 hours. Morris said he loves dogs as do most people, and he cross-pollinates with pet portraits as well as nude portraits. He is surprised at how many people love to commission nudes. He laughed as he explained that he has no filter and declared, “I love stickers and butts. I like big butts. For now, it’s all about the branding and using my ugly mug.” His straight-up honesty and humor must be what the Triad needs a lot more of this year. The 2019 Triad’s Best Art Gallery goes to Reynolda House Museum of American Art, which is supported by the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, affiliated with Wake Forest University and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. “I think Reynolda House has the best of both worlds,” said Allison Slaby, Reynolda’s curator since 2005. “Like an art gallery, it has very exciting changing exhibitions, and as a museum, the permanent collection is a blockbuster every day. You can see the paintings up close and personal in a home-like setting. We also have lots of fun programming this summer, including our Summertime Social on June 13.” The Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing has a 3,000 square-foot gallery with largescale changing exhibitions. “Hopper to Pollock: American Modernism from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute” was up through May 12. “Leyendecker and

the Golden Age of American Illustration” will open on Aug. 30. In the historic house, four bedrooms are used as galleries for installations of works of art drawn from the permanent collection. These presently include “Martin Puryear: Cane,” “Portraits of the Artists,” and “The American Experiment: Nineteenth-Century Prints.” For more information and a schedule of programming, visit the website, www. reynoldahouse.org. ! Mr. Hudson comes to Greensboro Ernie Hudson has been described as a character actor, but perhaps he’s best described as an actor of character, one who imbues each role with a distinctive presence and personality. Mark Burger Perhaps best known as Winston Zeddemore, the Contributor most grounded of the gang in Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), or more recently as Lily Tomlin’s boyfriend on the hit series Grace and Frankie, his versatility is evident in his dramatic roles, including the child-like but heroic handyman Solomon in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1991), the tough and complicated prison warden Leo Glynn on HBO’s award-winning series Oz (1997-2003), and the forceful patriarch L.C. Duncan in BET’s crime series The Family Business, based on Carl Weber’s best-selling novels. And, just for good measure, he’s got some cult classics to his name. Topping the list is The Crow (1994), a film that nearly wasn’t completed because of the tragic death of lead Brandon Lee on the set, the 3-D sci-fi farrago Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1982), and the underwater monster mash Leviathan (1989). Hudson will be in Greensboro on May 20 as the inspirational keynote speaker for the United Way of Greater Greensboro’s 2019 Community Speaker Series,

hosted by African American Leadership, at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center, in which he will share his story of overcoming adversity to become the success he is today. The lessons he’s learned that he applies to his work just as easily apply to his life. “I don’t really look for speaking engagements, but I do like for ways to connect to the community – to find ways to connect and share my perspective,” he said. “I’ve been very blessed over my entire career. I think I’ve had a very charmed life.” Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Hudson was raised by his grandmother, who remains a dominant influence in his life. “She was a very religious woman – what we would now call ‘spiritual,’” he explained. “There was never a time in my life when I didn’t feel I was loved. She had a very personal view of the world. She

believed, as I do, that there’s a presence that surrounds you, and I carry that belief with me. “Whether you want to call it God or conscience or an innate sense of right and wrong, it’s very personal to each one of us, and it can guide you, if you let go of the distractions and outside influences, to direct your life. I truly believe we are guided by that inner presence; it’s part of who were are. There’s a lot of fear and doubt out there, but you’ve got to have faith and trust. You’ve got to trust the universe to unfold and to follow that path. Know you have a place.” When Hudson first made the Westward trek to California, he was a single father with two young sons. “It wasn’t like people were expecting me, or I’d been invited, I wasn’t in demand,” he said with a laugh, “but I knew that if I wanted to be an actor, I had to go. I had to do my part and do the work, and trust that people would show up. I had to have the belief and faith that dreams come to us. “Being a little older, I don’t need to do everything, but I seem to be working more than ever,” he noted with amusement. When the opportunity to do Grace and Frankie came up, it was simply too good to pass up, he said, having been an admirer of Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston for many years. “When I was starting out, Jane Fonda was just about the biggest female star in the world,” he noted. “Lily Tomlin was already a comedy legend. Martin Sheen was already established. I’ve known Martin but never had the opportunity to work with him. Sam Waterston, I’d worked with

on Law & Order. To be on the set, watching the process of how each one works is just a real joy for me.” Oz was a highlight both professionally and personally, as his son Ernie Hudson Jr. had a recurring role during the 19992000 season. “Oz was really a great cast,” he said. “J.K. Simmons, Eamonn Walker – they’ve gone on to great things and done wonderful work – and it was great to be part of something that was reaching to be something more. This was before The Sopranos and The Wire, so we were breaking some new ground.” That actual prison inmates and ex-convicts appeared on the series and acted as technical consultants added an extra level of realism, and even tension. “I’d come to work some days, and some inmates would get right in your face, and I’d think ‘Well, this is interesting,’” he laughed, “but that brought a reality to it. You had to step up.” Indeed, that’s something that Hudson finds irresistible. “I just like to really commit to a role. It’s all about the work, and when you’re allowed to put yourself in a space to reach for your best, I love that.” !

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson tussle in The Hustle

O

nce upon a time – in 1964, actually – there was a comedy about two con artists competing on the French Riviera. It was called Mark Burger Bedtime Story, and is chiefly remembered Contributor today for a number of reasons, one being that it was among Marlon Brando’s few comedies (he played the American con man), and despite not being successful the actor was quoted as saying it was one of the films he most enjoyed making, primarily because his co-star was David Niven (he played the Continental con man), one of the great show-biz raconteurs. The main reason that Bedtime Story is remembered, however, is because its (first) remake, 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoun-

drels – which starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine (in which roles should be obvious) – is considered by most to be a remake superior to the original. It certainly received better reviews and was a boxoffice hit. Had it not been for the financial woes of distributor Orion Pictures, there might well have been a follow-up. (Caine has said as much in his memoirs.) Some 30 years later, along comes the third go-’round, directed by Chris Addison (a veteran of Veep making his feature debut) and starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in the principal roles. The setting, at least, remains the same: Beaumont-sur-Mer. Thus, if nothing else

– and, indeed, there isn’t much else – the cast and crew enjoyed a sunny sojourn. They got a free trip; the audience gets the movie. It’s hardly a fair trade-off. The screenplay is credited by Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning (who wrote Bedtime Story) and executive producer Dale Launer (who adapted their script for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), with the new addition being Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel). The storyline adheres to its predecessors with one notable and fatal exception: It’s not funny. Making the con artists women may be a novelty, but it’s this forgettable film’s only one. If Dirty Rotten Scoundrels surpassed

Bedtime Story, The Hustle is a giant step back. Here is a quintessential example of an inferior remake, and there’s the palpable sense that Hathaway and Wilson are merely coasting. The former gets to wear a variety of designer outfits and indulge in a variety of accents (English, German); the latter, also one of the film’s producers, gets to wear a variety of shirts with ostensibly funny quotes and to indulge in her patented brand of brash slapstick, which is starting to wear thin, if it hasn’t already. Alex Sharp plays the bumbling American tech innovator whom both ladies set their sights on, in a competition to see which one gets to stay in Beaumontsur-Mer, but there’s not much suspense or much surprise in how it all turns out. Indeed, there’s not much at all to The Hustle, although it may qualify as a bedtime story in its own right because it’s such a snooze. !

[NEWS OF THE WEIRD] OVERREACTIONS

What began as a quiet family dinner at home quickly escalated into a front-yard brawl on April 22 in Bedford, Virginia. Fox News reported Chuck Shepherd that Mark Turner, 56, his girlfriend, the girlfriend’s son and the son’s girlfriend had retired to the front yard after dinner when an argument broke out between the two men about whether Chevrolet or Ford makes better vehicles. According to the Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney Wes Nance, Turner allegedly pulled out a knife but ended up slashing his girlfriend’s back as she tried to calm the situation. Next Turner went inside and retrieved a gun, but as the girlfriend again tried to get between him and her son, he allegedly shot the woman five times in the leg. He also shot the son in the arm, and two of his stray bullets hit the son’s girlfriend in her back and cheek. Finally, according to prosecutors, Turner barricaded himself in the house,

where police eventually shot him with a beanbag round and took him into custody. Turner was charged with felony malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a felon.

FREE SPEECH

TSA agents at Juneau International Airport logged unexpected cargo on April 15 when a “large organic mass” was spotted in a traveler’s carry-on bag. TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein explained to KTOO that such a flag can indicate the presence of explosives. However, when agents opened the bag, they found a plastic grocery bag full of moose “nuggets.” “The passenger told the TSA officers that he collects this and likes to present it ‘for politicians and their (bleep) policies,’” Farbstein explained. The passenger was not detained and was allowed to continue on with his bag of moose poop. Later that day, the Anchorage Daily News reported that a man was seen at the state capitol, handing out baggies of moose nuggets in protest of Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s proposed budget.

NEWS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE

Arnold J. Teeter, 49, became angry while dining at a Perkins restaurant in Painesville, Ohio, on April 16. First, he threw a menu at his waitress; when a manager stepped in, Teeter upped his game and grabbed his pet iguana from under his shirt, twirled it in the air and launched it toward the manager. Teeter was charged with disorderly conduct -- and with cruelty to animals, because Copper, the turquoise iguana, suffered a broken leg in the incident. The Lake County Humane Society has taken the female lizard into protective custody and is trying to raise money for the surgery she needs, reports WEWS. No word on whether the Perkins manager suffered any injuries in the incident.

YIKES!

John Gardner was minding his own business, driving to work in Conway, South Carolina, on April 30 when “a big, black dot” flew into his windshield, shattering the glass, according to WBTW. “I didn’t get hurt at all,” Gardner said, although he was covered in glass fragments. The flying object didn’t fare so well: A nearby truck had hit a tortoise crossing the road and

projected it into Gardner’s car. Rob’s Auto Body said the animal died on impact. The truck driver was also unhurt, but it’s estimated that repairs to Gardner’s car will cost about $2,000.

CRIME REPORT

Sometimes a girl just wants a pretty new thing. But Aida Melcado, 18, and an unnamed minor accomplice, let greed get the best of them. Lower Allen Township Police say Melcado and her helper browsed through the Victoria’s Secret store in the Capital City Mall in Bethesda, Maryland, on April 7, carrying large shopping bags and talking on cellphones. While the minor acted as a lookout, Melcado allegedly shoveled delicates into her bag, to wit: 375 hipster panties (worth $3,937.50), 375 cut thongs ($3,937.50), 1,000 thongs ($10,500) and 250 raw-cut hip-hugging panties ($2,625), for a grand total of $21,000. Police told WPMT they later identified the thieves during a drug investigation in Fairfax County, Virginia. !

My picks for Triad’s Best

Jim Longworth

Longworth at Large

ince this is the annual Triad’s Best issue, Charles Womack, publisher of YES! Weekly, asked me to add my two cents worth to the festivities. Here, in no particular order, are some of my picks for Triad’s Best, according to categories that often go overlooked:

Best Distillery: Old Nick Williams Cousins Zeb and Matt Williams make Carolina Bourbon Whiskey at the same farm in Lewisville as did their ancestor Joseph Williams back in 1768. The distillery was forced to shut down during Prohibition, but the Williams boys revived the operation several years ago. They have also preserved some interesting historical artifacts, which are on display in the gift shop.

Best Garden: Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden Located in historic downtown Kernersville, Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden actually has seven different gardens, including a tulip garden and a kitchen garden. Staff horticulturists conduct tours and offer planting tips year round. The garden has also become a popular site for weddings and receptions. Best Sports Complex: Proehlific Park in Greensboro Proehlific Park offers a wide variety of indoor athletic facilities in its 86,000 square-foot complex, plus a number of outdoor sports in its 22-acre park. But it is also headquarters to Ricky and Kelly Proehl’s P.O.W.E.R. of Play Foundation, which offers young people a structured environment for growing their minds and bodies. The Foundation will also soon start constructing the area’s first all-inclusive playground for kids of all ability levels. Best Bakery: Winkler Bakery The oldest continually operating

bakery in America has been baking cookies, bread and sugar cakes in Old Salem since George Washington’s day, and in the same oven. I dare you to try to make it home with a hot loaf of bread without sneaking a taste on the way. Bakery staff is dressed in authentic Colonial garb, or at least I think that’s whom I gave my credit card to.

America’s best haunts, but owner Eddie McLaurin also offers seasonal events, like Easter Egg Hunts and a breathtaking Christmas light show. And, during the Halloween season, Eddie regularly offers up free thrills to special needs kids, while employing hundreds of actors. (All that from a guy with a giant boa wrapped around his neck.)

Best Stretch of I-40: NONE. If you have to commute between WinstonSalem and Greensboro, it’s probably best if you charter an airplane. Speaking of which…

Best Science Fair: This category goes to UNCG for its annual “Science Everywhere” event, where students and faculty get kids and parents excited about science. The event features campus-wide displays, demonstrations, and family activities.

Best Directional Signage on the Way to PTI: NONE. It’s so confusing that I once ended up in Galax, which, by the way, doesn’t offer flights to Tampa. Best Live Performance Theatre: High Point Theatre gets high marks for offering up a diverse selection of concerts and events, season after season. One week there’s a military band, the next, a country music singer or hip-hop group. You might see T.V. and movie stars one night, and a local talent competition the next. (Kudos to my friend Dave Briggs for booking something for everyone.) Best Movie Theatre: Although the Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro offers live concerts and lectures, it’s also the best place to see classic films come alive on a big screen for the first time in generations. Films such as “Frankenstein” deserve to be shown in a historic theatre. It’s better than Blu-ray.

Best Public Relations Agency: Pam Cook Communications. Why? Because Pam uses her T.V. news background to help nonprofit organizations advance their mission of service to others. (Also, because she’s my wife, and I had to mention her because I don’t feel safe at home.) One last thing. For the past 10 years I’ve tried to get our Communist publisher to create a category for “Best Locally Produced Public Affairs Television Program,” but he refuses because he says that Triad Today would be the only entry since it’s the only locally produced public affairs television program in the Triad. I think that’s a lame excuse, so I’m going to move to Galax and write for their paper. ! JIM LONGWORTH is the host of “Triad Today,” airing on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. on ABC45 (cable channel 7) and Sundays at 11 a.m. on WMYV (cable channel 15).

Best Community Haunt: Woods of Terror is widely recognized as one of

The Best Comic Book Store in the Triad

acme comics

general manager at acme comics Jermaine exum wrote in a facebook message that acme first opened in 1983 (where little Brother Brewing is now) in downtown greensboro. exum wrote that being voted the triad’s Best comic Book store is a tremendous honor. “We take it very seriously as a standard to hold ourselves to,” he wrote. “the word ‘acme’ is defined as the point at which someone or something is best, perfect, or most successful. that pressure is quite literally always there, and we will always be a work in progress.” exum believes that the key to acme’s success is through exceptional customer service. “the world of comic books is rich, vibrant, and diverse,” he wrote. “But it can potentially be difficult to navigate through thousands of selections new and old to get to the right thing. so we are here to use our collective knowledge to help interested people of any age find the best options.” exum wrote that the triad’s Best award is tangible evidence “that what we do and how we

do it has set us apart in the eyes of the triad and surrounding areas.” “We strive to be the type of store that we would love to shop with if we were customers ourselves,” he wrote. “that is a core value here. representing the items we carry in a way that respects the material and using our collective knowledge to connect interested readers with the best content is another core value.” coming up on May 25, acme is hosting ethan sacks, the Marvel comics writer of “old Man hawkeye and old Man Quill” and “star Wars galaxy’s edge.” for more information, visit acme’s website or social media pages.

“If you think about it even for a second, there is somebody you know that has some affiliation with UNCG,” said Eden Bloss, UNCGʼs senior director of external communications.“Everyone knows somebody or has had some sort of interaction with our campus if youʼve lived here even for a little while.” Bloss said that UNCG is “over the moon” about winning the title of the Triadʼs Best College/ University. Bloss attributes some of the success of winning the title to UNCG Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. She said before he arrived, UNCG was the areaʼs “best-kept secret.” Bloss said UNCG has “broke the high-water mark from a studentʼs perspective,” with over 20,000 students this year. UNCG was once considered a commuter school, she said, and now it has evolved into what it is today. With growth, Bloss said, the university is also mindful of what the community needs and puts its resources to “where we think is going to make the most impact.” For instance, she said, the addition

of the Bestway grocery store on campus. “That is what we are proud of, we are able to keep up the high academic standards but also give back to the community in a way that is meaningful and at the same time, hold the line on tuition.” Coming up at UNCG on May 18 is the Heart Walk, and later in the summer is music camp, girls in STEM, and other various summer camps for kids. The weekly Spartan Cinema is free and held in LeBauer Park on Fridays at dusk, and this weekʼs movie is “The Incredibles 2” with closed captions. “We are so grateful to all the voters, and we really appreciate their confidence in us,” Bloss said. “And hopefully, we can continue to make them proud, and we can throw in some surprises along the way.” For more information, visit UNCGʼs website.

The Triad's Best Apartment Complex

burke ridge crossing

Property manager ariel gordon said burke ridge crossing winning the triad’s best apartment complex is an achievement that she is very excited about it. gordon said the key to their success is their customer service. “We have a great team in the office,” she said. “our customer service is what helps us stand out above everyone else.” gordon said that burke ridge crossing is owned by blue ridge companies, located in high Point. “if [tenants] ever need corporate we are pretty close, and we are very involved in our community as well,” she said. burke ridge crossing offers tenants one, two, and three bedroom apartments. its amenities include a pool open year-round, a 24-hour fitness center, a leash-free pet park, a multimedia theatre, a car detail center, a 24-hour resident business center, valet waste services, wifi throughout the community, clothes care center, a gas grill, picnic areas, a corn hole playing field, an outdoor kitchen, and a fire pit.

“it is our residents that chose us,” gordon said. “i would thank them as well.” gordon said there is no set pricing for burke ridge crossing, so those interested should call the offices for a quote or visit the website for more information.

The Best New Restaurant in Guilford

Lao Restaurant + Bar

Lao Restaurant + Bar has been open since August 2018 and took home the title of Guilford Countyʼs Best New Restaurant. “I was pleasantly surprised,” said owner Vonne Keobouala. “We hit it off pretty strong, but I was a little bit skeptical of how it would go because we are an ethnic restaurant in downtown Greensboro.” Keobouala said the food served at Lao is authentic and as “traditional as you can be.” She said that the restaurant has a clean, modern and sleek look and atmosphere. She describes Laotian food as “herbal, fresh, with a kick of spice.” Keoboualaʼs favorite dish is the Nam Khao, which is crispy rice with grated coconut, peanuts, sour pork, herbs (such as mint, and cilantro) green onions, and shallots served on a lettuce wrap. “It is very flavorful, yet light and crispy, and you wrap it in lettuce,” she said. “It is a great conversation food, a great starter entrée, and one that is my favorite.” Keobouala said her mission for the restaurant is to introduce her Laotian culture through the food. WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

We are honored by your votes!

“When my family arrived in America and began their journey as restaurateurs, they focused on Thai cuisine,” she said. “We never felt like there was a right time to focus on our own cuisine, Laotian cuisine. I made the decision to commit to sharing my culture with my community when I opened Lao, and the reception has felt like a homecoming. Without my hardworking staff and the beautiful community of downtown Greensboro, Lao Restaurant + Bar would not be what it is today. Because of you all, I get to live my dream every single day. Khobchai, (means thank you from Laos) Greensboro and YES! Weekly. Without your appetite, we would not be where we are today.”

The Best New Restaurant in Forsyth

The Prescott

Executive chef and co-owner Trey Prescott and general manager and co-owner Daniel Dyson opened The Prescott on Dec. 20, 2018. “It is quite an honor,” said Prescott of winning Forsyth Countyʼs Best New Restaurant. “I didnʼt expect it, especially with the short amount of time weʼve been open,” Dyson said. “The amount of exposure we have gotten has been kind of overwhelming.” Prescott said the restaurant offers an involved fine dining experience, with tableside service, and sources (as much as it can) local North Carolina food products. Prescott said he sources his microgreens from Five Woods Farm, which is only about two miles down the road from the restaurant. “We start dinner off with an amuse-bouche, that most people donʼt do anymore,” Prescott said. “It is just something for us to wake up everybody and say we really want you to pay attention to your meal and this is the way to get started.” Prescott and Dyson describe the food as modern American cuisine with a French influence.

YES! WEEKLY

“We want people to do courses,” Prescott said. “But we donʼt like the word fancy-schmancy.” Prescott said he didnʼt go to culinary school and that he is “pretty much self-taught.” He graduated in 2007 from Appalachian State with a business degree in the hospitality management program. “It was me and Danielʼs dream and ridiculous nightmare to have a fine dining restaurant,” Prescott said. On May 21, The Prescott is holding a wine dinner called “Toast to the Coast” with a South African-influenced dinner. This dinner celebrates the Rickety Bridge Winery, which is based in South Africa but has roots in the Triad. Prescott said the owner of the winery is from Kernersville, and the wine is distributed in High Point. “We have these dinners monthly, so stay tuned to links on our Facebook page, Instagram, and website,” Dyson said. “It is derived from the food, and I try to couple it from the wine.”

The Triad's Best LGBTQ Liv ing Legend

Paisley Parque

This year, YES! Weekly added new categories to accompany the new LGBTQ section on the Triadʼs Best ballot. Drag entertainer Paisley Parque was voted as the first Triadʼs LGBTQ Living Legend, and Best Seasoned Drag Queen. Her monthly Sex Kitten RoundUp at Chemistry Nightclub also won the Triadʼs Best LGBTQ Night Out or Event. Parque starting doing drag in 1990 and has won numerous pageants. Her favorite title is Miss Gay North Carolina USA At-Large that she won in 2005. She said she went on to compete in Miss Gay USA AtLarge and made the Top 12. She has also been named Miss Pride Winston-Salem, Miss Triad Pride, Miss Warehouse Witch, Miss Salem Witch, Miss Honey Boo, Miss Scarolina, Miss Dragula, and Miss Hippy Hoppity. Parque describes her drag persona as being known for costumes, jewelry, and big blonde hair. “Thereʼs a running joke that Paisley is the only drag queen whose lips can be seen from outer space,” Parque said. “She is a larger-than-life character on stage. Sheʼs kinda like if you put Miss Piggy, Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Madonna and Dolly Parton in a blender.” Parque said she does drag because it gets her out of

her comfort zone. “As a boy, I am typically very shy and more reserved.” “It makes me feel grateful, honored and very excited,” Parque said of her wins. “I am very thankful to be able to perform after all these years. In August next year, Iʼll be celebrating 30 years. So to still be able to do this now and to be still wanted, itʼs a huge honor.” Parque said she feels a bit overwhelmed and shocked to win all of these awards. “Of course, I wasnʼt expecting to win anything but to end up winning three awards; Iʼm very thankful because I was nominated against some really great queens,” she said. If her drag history is correct, Parque said that her Sex Kitten Round-Up is the longest-running drag show in the Triad. It is held at Chemistry Nightclub on the fourth Saturday of every month with drag shows at 10 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. Parqueʼs advice for other entertainers is to support their local queens/kings and to not give up. “People told me I was booger, and I had no business being on stage and look at me now. Hard work does pay off, never give up if you have that dream.”

The Triad's Best Drag King

T Money

Entertainer T Money said that winning the firstever Triadʼs Best Drag King award is an honor. “Iʼd like to thank my supporters,” he said. “Iʼve been doing drag for about 10 years now. It is great that there are still supporters out there that remember me. It feels good to be recognized in the community.” Money said his stage name was given to him and it just stuck. He said he does Post Malone and Sean Paul impersonations, and that his persona mainly performs to hip-hop and R&B. “That is really different too, because of a lot of other drag kings perform to rock and country.” He said his favorite song to perform to is “What They Want” by Russ, “Becky” by Plies, and that “Must Be The Money” by Nelly is the main song that he performs to. Money said his drag mother Tia Chanella and drag sister Bella Jade inspired and encouraged him to do drag. Also, the lack of drag kings and the abundance of drag queens in the area also nudged him to start performing. “I have always been part of the drag queen community, and there really wasnʼt any kings YES! WEEKLY

around,” Money said. “I would just be helping them in the dressing room--I was a make-up artist at the time--and I was just like ʻwhy arenʼt there any kings? Maybe I should try it.ʼ” Money said his favorite part of being a drag king is performing. “Definitely being able to be something visual that someone can take their mind off of things,” he said. “If they had a long week or maybe they are going through some personal things at home, they come out and take their mind off things that may be overbearing.” Money said his advice to new performers or others who may want to get into drag is to be yourself. “There is going to be a lot of guidelines that people expect that you follow and I say donʼt,” he said. “I never followed any; just be yourself. We need more creativity out there because everyone tries to do the same thing, all try to wear the same stuff and do the same music. We definitely need more creativity. Stick to yourself if you are looking to start entertaining.”

The Triad's Best Musician

Dan Ray

Cover artist Dan Ray said it is an honor to be voted as the Triadʼs Best Musician and the Triadʼs Best Guitarist. “Iʼm so excited I can hardly get my head around it,” Ray said. “Itʼs amazing who was on that list, there were a dozen people that I know and looked up to.” Ray said he loves being a cover artist right now because, for him, the point of playing music is the connection between the audience and the musician. He said one shortcut to that connection is playing a song that the audience recognizes and loves. “There is something about playing covers that gives you a real, unique, fast-access into a personʼs best memories and nostalgia,” he said. Ray describes his band, The Clanky Lincolns, (which also won the Triadʼs Best Tribute/Cover Band) as a “high-energy party band” that plays everything from the roots of rock to songs on the radio now. Though he is a multi-instrumentalist, his primary focus for several years has been the guitar. “I took a lot of time off from music,” he said. “I was really intense about music in school--high school and college, and then I didnʼt perform for 20 years.”

He said he has been performing again for the past five years. Ray hosts the Live Music Pub Trivia every second Wednesday at Gibbʼs Hundred Brewing Company, which is essentially a live music “name that tune” trivia game. Ray said there are themes for each night, and when teams know the answer, they ring in with their hand instruments and either guess the song name, artist or year it came out. Ray said The Clanky Lincolns play all around the Triad, but recently they have been playing at Greensboroʼs Pig Pounder Pavillion, with shows coming up on May 18 and June 1. Ray said he would also be performing at the Dunleath Porchfest on June 8 at 703 5th Ave. at 2:15 p.m. For more information, visit The Clanky Lincolnsʼ Facebook page or website. “The thing that I would say to my beautiful, brilliant, button-mashing, ballot box-stuffing supporters is ʻthank you, and I love you too,ʼ” he said. “This community is so supportive of musicians and artists, and itʼs really, really great to play for the people who love music in this area.”

The Triad's Most Unique P lace to Hear Live Music

The Deck at River Twist

Wade Gabel, owner of The Deck at River Twist, said winning The Triadʼs Most Unique Place To Hear Live Music was precisely what he was striving for with his “unique, eclectic, funky, weird” bar. He said The Deck is a safe environment for anyone 21 years and older who “like me, doesnʼt like to get liquored up and fight the world. That is not what we are about.” But that isnʼt the only Triadʼs Best accolade The Deck has won this year. The Deck also took first place as the Best Place To Dance. The Deck won second place as The Most Original and Unique Bar and as The Triadʼs Best Live Music Show. The Deck was also a runner-up in the categories of Best Girls Night Out, Best Club For Hooking Up, and Best Patio in Guilford County. Gabel attributed The Deckʼs success to improving each year because “if you get complacent, I think you kind of rot on the vine. You gotta keep trying to do a little something to reinvent yourself.” One of those things has been to install sound dampening material on the outdoor stage to

YES! WEEKLY

comply with noise ordinances and to show his hometown that he cares and he wants to be “a good steward.” Later this year, Gabel hopes to expand and flatten the outdoor area and continue to build on to the sound screens. Gabel said on Wednesdays, The Deck hosts an open mic night; Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights there is live music; and on Sunday afternoons, The Deck is family and dog-friendly. Coming up at The Deck, Cory Luetjen will be performing on May 16; Spare Change will play on May 17, and Stereo Doll will play on May 18. On June 2, there is also a Wounded Warrior benefit concert. For more information, visit The Deckʼs Facebook page, website, or in the “Local and Live” section of YES! Weekly.

hen you hear the name of Greensborobased band Viva La Muerte, winners of YES! Weekly’s readers’ poll for the Triad’s Best Original John Adamian Band, you might find @johnradamian yourself wondering what they’re all about. First of all, Contributor they’re not a death metal band, though the name loosely translates to “long live death.” They’re prepared for your curiosity. They have a paragraph on the homepage of their website wading into an explanation of sorts about the band name. There are allusions to obscure movie references, to poetic philosophies of beauty, and to the

code of the samurai. It’s all a riff basically on memento mori — the maxim that states ‘Remember that you, too, will die one day,’ and so you should live life with the fire and passion derived from that understanding. I spoke with Viva La Muerte’s frontman and main songwriter Matt “M.C.” Armstrong last week. We talked a little bit about the band’s music, their approach to staying energized, and their excitement about connecting with listeners, music-scene veterans and fellow musicians in the Triad area. Armstrong is a seize-the-day kind of guy: he’s certainly practicing what he preaches in the pursue-your-passions department. When he’s not writing, performing and recording music with Viva La Muerte,

Armstrong teaches in the English departments at Guilford College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. And when he’s not teaching or making music, he’s also busy working on his Ph.D. dissertation on the subject of post-9/11 soldier-writers, poets and novelists. In its own way, all of the work relates to itself, to the state of America, to the confluence of poetry, pop culture, current events and a sense of a national spirit. The band’s last record, The Eyes of Men, came out in 2017. Some of the material on it was written before Donald Trump became president and before he even fully emerged as the likely Republican nominee. It was an album that mixed songs that conjured a feeling of alarm about the state of the country and others that captured that sense of yearning to dive into the mysteries and paradoxes of life, to find joy in music and love, despite the obstacles. Viva La Muerte started in 2005. At the time, Armstrong was inspired by a conversation he and a friend had about the scope of American music. They discussed the

ways that the best bands had links to literary and poetic traditions that extend back to the Beats, Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. They also discussed how America’s surging sense of itself always has pulsed through popular music and the ways that American literature always had a humble, of-the-people aspect. American music retains street poetry and mystical vision of the possibilities for the country. Armstrong is one of those guys who can persuasively make the case for viewing songwriting and poetry as manifestations of the same thing. Songcraft, melody, rhythm, phrasing and even a pop sensibility inform poetry. And poetry certainly energizes popular music. Songwriters like Leonard Cohen and David Berman (of the Silver Jews) are equally admired as poets. Likewise, poets like Paul Muldoon have taken a crack at writing pop songs. It’s not hard to find connections between grand poetic traditions and song: Homeric epics were most likely recited with musical accompaniment, and Dante took inspiration from the tradition of poet troubadours. When poets invoke the muse, they often ask her to sing.

“I see songwriting as literature,” Armstrong said. Viva La Muerte’s debut record, All The Birds, opens with a song that’s built around the wonderfully self-reflexive line “I feel like I feel like feeling again,” which almost sounds like a gag, but it’s really about the ways we open ourselves up to feeling, to being receptive to other people’s emotions. It can be heard as a statement about the active role we have to play in being able to sense and feel and respond to what’s

around us, both to be aware of what’s happening in the world and also to be fully alive and engaged with others. It’s a rallying cry against the easy comforts of numbness. The song reflects Armstrong’s interest in balancing seriousness with the important business of pleasure and fun. One without the other is no good, in the long run. Musically, Viva La Muerte mix a lot of elements: brooding singer-songwriter troubadour folk, some Americana, sturdy bar-band blues rock, and a hint of jam-

band openness, with horns, pedal steel, keys, banjo, harmonica and other touches added as needed. Armstrong said the band was grappling with its identity about a year ago, trying to decide whether to stick with the well-traveled paths of guitar-rock or to push out elsewhere. They settled on elsewhere, into points less clearly mapped out, as a big band with lots of moving parts and a built-in place for musical exploration. The possibilities within the music are what give Armstrong the energy to keep working on so many different fronts. “When you try to build improvisational spaces within your music, and you can really get into a trance with musicians you like — there’s something about playing where you realize, ‘Holy shit, I just stole some fire!’” Armstrong said. “The tradition we’re working, it’s magical.” The band now includes, in addition to Armstrong, Ranford Almond on guitar, Jared Zehmer on bass, Wes Allen on drums, Alan Hedrick on trumpet, multi-instrumentalist John Crocker, Tayler Coldiron on fiddle, and Nikki Taylor on sax. It’s a large-scale project with a lot of musical perspectives, which fits the ambition and scope of the songs. Armstrong said that getting plugged into a supportive network in Greensboro has energized the band.

In addition to his bandmates, he credits Greensboro event-organizers Charles “Bones” Frank and Amanda Loflin with fostering a scene that is warm, open and creatively fruitful. Getting the nod from the community is a bonus for Armstrong and crew. “We’ve been toiling in obscurity — and rather happily — for a long time,” he said. “To get noticed, as Jerry Garcia would say, is ‘gravy.’” Viva La Muerte is working on material for a new record. Armstrong said some of the songs are already complete, a few of which, like one called “The Ballad of Reality Winner” (about the famous whistleblower) and another about climate change and storms, are being played out at the band’s shows now. You can catch Viva La Muerte this summer at Center City Park in Greensboro, on Sat., July 13 at 7 p.m. and at Little Brother Brewing, in Greensboro, on Sat. July 20, at 9:30 p.m. Keep an eye on www.vivalamuerteband.com for further live show updates. ! JOHN ADAMIAN lives in Winston-Salem, and his writing has appeared in Wired, The Believer, Relix, Arthur, Modern Farmer, the Hartford Courant and numerous other publications.

[BARTENDERS OF THE WEEK | BY NATALIE GARCIA] Check out videos on our Facebook!

BARTENDER: Brett Nooe BAR: The Prescott AGE: 31 WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I am originally from Bethesda, Maryland, but my father was in the Navy, so we moved around for a bit before we ended up settling here in North Carolina. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BARTENDING? 8 years. HOW DID YOU BECOME A BARTENDER? I was waiting tables one day, and I kind of just fell into the role. I knew all the drinks, and the bartender called out sick, so my manager asked me to cover for them, haven’t looked back since.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT BARTENDING? I enjoy the social and creative aspects of the job. We get to meet awesome people daily, share our stories, and create delicious cocktails. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DRINK TO MAKE? Probably an Old Fashioned. I soak fresh cherries in Crème de Cassis and Harlequin Orange Liquor, so you get a little more citrus and black currant notes under the rye whiskey. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DRINK TO DRINK? A Kentucky Mule or Buffalo Trace on the rocks. WHAT WOULD YOUR RECOMMEND AS AN AFTER-DINNER DRINK? A nice, single-malt scotch. I like the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban because it also has hints of port.

WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE SEEN WHILE BARTENDING? I was working Furniture Market in High Point one year, and these two guys come into the bar. They are clearly intoxicated and ask for a double shot of Jameson. I tell the guy that he won’t be able to have a drink because he’s intoxicated and the guy proceeds to grab a cigarette out of his pack, turn around, and immediately drops his keys, wallet, and cigarette box on the floor. He walks out the door, and I yell to his buddy that his friend had dropped all of his stuff. The guy walks outside tells his buddy to come in. The guy stumbles up to the bar asks me for a water. I grab him a water, and I tell him he has dropped all of his stuff. The guy grabs the water from my hand, walks on top of his wallet and continues out the door with his buddy and the glass of water! They just start walking down Main Street... I tried yelling for the guy, but it was no use. The walk of shame and the look on his face was priceless when he came to grab his stuff the next day. WHAT’S THE BEST TIP YOU’VE EVER GOTTEN? Honestly, I wasn’t even bartending when I received my largest tip. I was serving, and I walked up to the table, and a guy hands me a $100 bill and says, “This is just to make sure the service is up to our standards, this is not your tip.” He then left me $300 at the end of the service.

PIMP MY RITE

My boyfriend dumped me and moved out of our place. I’m on the lease and can’t afford to break it, but it still feels like “our place,” and that’s making it hard to move on. My Amy Alkon hippie friend said I should burn sage or Advice light a candle and do Goddess a “letting go” meditation. Umm, okay. Can you please explain how rituals like this are bogus and unscientific so I can get her off my back? — Annoyed As I see it, lingering emotional distress like yours requires serious intervention — like sacrificing a goat on the coffee table. (Possibly two, if one doesn’t get ‘er done.) Just kidding about the goats — but only because you’d have to hire crime scene cleaners afterward, which could get seriously pricey. Research by Harvard Business School’s Michael I. Norton, among others, actually finds that rituals — symbolic activities we do with some goal in mind — seem to help us feel better: less negative, less anxious, and more in control. Amazingly, this is even true for ritual-doers who don’t believe in the rituals — who think they’re idiotic, embarrassing, and pointless. Annoyingly, researchers aren’t quite sure why rituals have this effect on us. My guess is that we confuse the real with the symbolic. Research by cognitive neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga suggests our mind is a master spin doctor, creating stories about our behavior that make us look consistent, rational, and smart. And no sooner does it come up with those stories than it turns right around and believes them. In short, our mind is under the impression that we’re not stupid — that if we do something, we must have a good reason. In other words, your friend is on to something — and you might use this to get her onto another thing: a ladder in your living room. I suggest a painting ritual — painting over your old life (in stylin’ new hues, of course) to transform the house you shared with your ex into a colorful new home of your own. Per the research on ritual, ceremony would be an essential part of this — including explicitly calling what you’re doing a “ritual” and saying a few words, the way you would at a funeral. Incorporate a ceremonial tearing-up of a photo of the two of you together, and have your friends chant, “Out, out, Steve! You are no longer welcome

here!” Then have everybody accompany you to toss the pieces into the dumpster. Admittedly, this ritual will probably seem seriously silly while you’re doing it, but you can just choose to buy into it and have a good time. While you’re at it, give your friend some props. She was on the right track in helping you rid your home of the Ghost of Boyfriend Past — despite suggesting burning a small bunch of cooking herbs when it probably seemed nothing short of arson would do the job.

TENTS SITUATION

I read in Bon Appetit about this woman who takes all her dates to Olive Garden to see whether they judge her when she pockets all the leftover breadsticks. Okay, whatever. But what I wanna see is whether somebody’s a good person. What kind of dates do you suggest for determining a potential boyfriend’s character and values? — Concerned Woman People often say you can discover a person’s true character from how they treat the waiter. And sure, rudeness to a waiter is a red flag, but it isn’t like we easily identify the sociopaths among us because they summon the server referee-style, by blowing a whistle. It helps to consider the roots of good behavior — moral behavior, that is: why people are good to other people. Evolutionary cognitive scientists Dan Sperber and Nicolas Baumard explain that “People may behave morally because they intrinsically value doing so — a genuine moral reason — or in order to gain the approval of others.” But there’s a complication: We all care about our reputation and doing things that put us in the best light, which is to say both the worst people and the best people behave better when they know they’re being watched. A person’s true character will come out over time. But there’s a way to speed up the dirtbag detection process: observe a person’s behavior under harsh conditions. In other words, consider getting kidnapped and held hostage together by the Albanian mob — or, if that’s a little impractical for you, go camping or even just hike some challenging trail. When the chips are down (like if you get injured), that’s when you see: Is he there for you, or is he the type to leave you to die in the wilderness? “I’d totally make a tourniquet for you, but this is a $400 Burberry shirt. Good luck!” !
