Welcome to the Festival On behalf of all the dedicated
MaMuse
people that come together to make this memorable event happen year after year, welcome back to beautiful Black Oak Ranch for the seventeenth annual Kate Wolf Music Festival!
MaMuse is what a meadow would sound like if it could sing. MaMuse is One Voice Divided. They manage to create beautiful harmonies, woven into a tapestry of strings and stillness. MaMusic stirs the heart through deep soul felt lyrics and sparse supportive instrumentation. Sarah and Karisha together create original music that breathes. Tight vocal harmonies ring out a cappella or blend with upright bass, mandolin, guitar, and flute to deliver a message of living joyfully on this planet Earth.
We send our many thanks to the Black Oak Ranch community for opening their gates again to share the peace and magic of their land. Please do your part by respecting their space, and your festival neighbors.
Love Choir In April 1997, the Love Choir debuted when Jim “Brother Jimmy Lovejoy” Corbett gathered some folks together to do a Sunday morning gospel concert at Sebastopol’s annual Apple Blossom Festival. And they are still going strong.
This year you’ll see a few changes from years past. On Friday, to allow dancing near the stage, your chairs will start further back from the stage than previous years. On Saturday and Sunday, your chairs will be closer to the stage, as in past years, and the music bowl
The Love Choir meets weekly for singing in Sebastopol. No auditions. Everyone is welcome, just show up, sing, and let your love shine!

In an effort to reduce waste to as close to zero as we can, we have begun a new program at Black Oak Ranch in collaboration with Waste Busters and the Whole Earth Festival from Davis, CA. Reusable dinnerware is our attempt to eliminate disposable dishware, utensils, and cups at our food court while providing a sanitary way for everyone to eat the wonderful home cooked food provided by our festival vendors. We also encourage everyone to bring your own dishware and our vendors will happily serve you on your own plate.
Everyone who works to put this festival together appreciates your ongoing support. We extend a hearty thank you to our sponsors and the numerous folks that work with a smile to make this festival run smoothly. Thank you for your continuing efforts to provide the highest quality experience for all of us and for bringing yourselves here to join in a weekend of celebration to share time, music, and space in a peaceful and positive way.
Our beer will only be dispensed in reusable stainless steel cups that will keep your beer cooler

The Sam Chase The Sam Chase has a voice like a Nun on the lam with a mouthful of cigarettes and curse words in a lonely bar, drunkenly dancing next to a broken jukebox. His songs are scribbled, not written, on lipstick and sweat stained motel bed-sheets because he likes the way the ink bleeds. His guitar runs on diesel and leaks like the morning after too much Whiskey. His is a show you’ll probably want to tattoo on your body so everyone will know that you knew him before he was cool.

Lucy Wainwright Roche Sincere and raw, at times recalling Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin, Roche’s bittersweet voice leaps out painting an indelible image....” – NPR Song of the Day
Rita Hosking
Lucy Wainwright Roche grew up in Greenwich Village, the daughter of two performing musicians—Loudon Wainwright III and Suzy Roche (The Roches). Her childhood was spent living out of a suitcase, either on the road with her parents or being ferried around to different relatives in her big musical clan. She hit the road full-time, playing across North America, Europe and Australia with such notable acts as Amos Lee, Dar Williams, Neko Case, Mary Gauthier and Teddy Thompson. Her crystalline voice, charming stage presence and refreshingly honest songwriting has made her a quick favorite with audiences, whether she’s playing in a theater, rock club or a national radio show like Mountain Stage.

With an exquisite voice filled with clarity and sweetness, irony and humor, sorrow and joy, Sherry tells tales simple and insightful, sometimes sad, always sage. Sherry sings about sweet love, friends finding new lives, seeing past decisions in a new light, and old love burning in a steady flame. Images we all recognize. Life’s simple pleasures, she reminds us in silky, smooth tones, is what we all should appreciate, like unexpected roses, the joy in a smile, and the sapphire color of the sky, all found in her songs. Drawing from a vast songbook of originals and covers, the duo blends the honkytonk harmonies of California country with West Coast folk and acoustic Americana, interlaced with vocal nuances that inspire pin-drop attention. Alisa Fineman & Kimball Hurd “Easily among the best of the next generation of singer-songwriters.” – Tom Paxton Renowned for her world-class alto voice with its dusky tones and depth of emotion, Alisa is perfectly complimented by multi-instrumentalist Kimball Hurd. Hurd, a Bammie (Bay Area Music Association) Award winner, adds dimension to the duo’s performances with vocal harmonies and an array of tasteful musical accents with guitar, mandolin, mandola, dobro, banjo and slide guitar, and steps forward on occasion to offer a song from his own catalog of powerful originals.

Their shows exude a foot-stomping, shout-along, drink-along ease that was once a staple in every music-playing, front-stooppossessing home in the land; reminding you that folk music is collective, is for dancing, is for sharing, and for whatever else you might do with friends and family in your own living room.
Paul Kamm & Eleanore MacDonald Modern folk musicians Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald have been writing and performing original, contemporary folk music for 27 years. A blend of contemporary and traditional styles, their music is graced by exquisite harmony, compelling songwriting, deceptively simple arrangements and intricate guitar work… all embraced by great heart...they’ve been applauded throughout the US as well as overseas for the lyrical content of their songs and vocal blend…a haunting style which weaves unique harmonies into a rich tapestry of guitar work and storytelling. More Performers Brendan Phillips & Fast Rattler “…intricate arrangements that appeal to fans of both traditional and current music.”– A.P. Kryza, Forest Grove News-Times Fronted by Utah Phillips’ son Brendan, the members of Fast Rattler are songwriting vagabond troubadours, virtuosic instrumentalists and collectors of old songs. The band combines vocal harmonies with banjo, fiddle, guitars, and pedal steel, anchored by a rock ‘n’ roll rhythm section. They weave a musical tapestry that brings audiences to their feet and melts their hearts with stories of disaster, struggle and love lost. Blending traditional American folk, bluegrass, Irish and Gypsy music with elements of jazz, swing, and rock, their performance evidences a genre-bending, quicksilver grace that nods to forebears ranging from Pete Seeger and Dave Van Ronk to Tom Waits and Wilco.
Achilles Wheel Achilles Wheel, based in the foothills of Northern California’s Sierra Nevada, is a high-energy fusion of World and American music played on numerous stringed instruments and a whole truckload of drums, featuring the singing/songwriting and guitar playing of Paul Kamm and Jonny Mojo. Original songs are the focus of this new group, but they love the old songs too and will use whatever tools are at hand to get a good jam going. Jonny’s guitar playing is as expressive and fresh as anything you’ll hear, and tells stories within the stories of the songs themselves, really lifting you up. This is beautifully supported with a powerful rhythm section that leans heavily into the hypnotic polyrhythmic elements of world music.

More Performers Under The Radar
The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit Take two prolific, Americana singer–songwriters, an indie–rock veteran of a drummer, country–born bassist, and metal–bred pedal steel player, and what do you get: the rough-hewn yet driftwood-smooth; rebel-headed, but heart-of-gold sound of The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. Likened to anything from Old Crow Medicine Show and The Avett Bros. to Asleep at the Wheel, Bob Wills and even Neil Young (depending on which live set you happen to catch) they most often defy categorization, usually settling for some hybrid of Americana, folk, rock, bluegrass, and that sweet, old country & western. They describe their efforts as trying to make good, honest, insightful music, that’s not afraid of a good time and a little fun, that people will move their feet to, and that also goes real well with a straight road and a long drive.
Under the Radar is a four piece acoustic band that plays the edge of new acoustic music. This is music rooted in traditional bluegrass but with a modern sensibility. Using the traditional bluegrass instrumentation of mandolin, dobro, guitar, string bass and 5-string banjo these folks are as likely to do an Irving Berlin swing song from the 40’s, or an old Ray Charles R&B tune, as a hard driving Bill Monroe bluegrass song, or that classic Jimmie Rogers country song. They’ve even been known to sneak in the occasional bluegrassified Beatles song! And when was the last time you heard a bluegrass reggae version of “Sitting Here in Limbo”? In addition to creating lively new versions of old songs, UtR also features crisp engaging original compositions. Their relaxed on-stage banter will leave you laughing and their adept musical genre hopping will leave you smiling, dancing or singing along.
Marcia Ball “A sensational, saucy singer and superb pianist... where Texas stomp–rock and Louisiana blues–swamp meet” – USA Today
Blushin’ Roulettes
2012 GRAMMY Nominee for her latest album Roadside Attractions (Best Blues Album), (her fifth GRAMMY nomination overall) and multiple award winning singer/pianist Marcia Ball knows how to raise roofs and tear down walls with her infectious, intelligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking, roadhouse blues and heartfelt ballads. Over the course of her three–decade career, Ball has earned a huge and intensely loyal following all over the world. Her exquisite piano playing and passionate, playful vocals fuse New Orleans and Gulf Coast R&B with Austin’s deep songwriting tradition into a sound No Depression described as “a little rock, a lot of roll, a pinch of rhythm and a handful of blues.”
“Their songs are stripped down, enthralling, sexy, little jewel boxes stuffed with ancient mountain magic.” – San Francisco Free Folk Festival Hailing from the friendly west coast town of Caspar, CA, the Blushin’ Roulettes deliver old-time tunes with a modern twist rooted in feminine perspective. Award winning songwriter Angela Rose belts her sweet and sultry tunes of damsels in their bliss and distress in a warbling vibrato often likened to Iris Dement. The quirkily comical stage presence and loving interplay amidst band members reflects the closeness of the kindred rotating cast of characters, which includes Buddy Stubbs on soulfully gritty lead guitar, Cas Sochacki rings in on the dobro and on baritone vocals on salty duets. Not-so-little drummer boy Jubal Stedman chugga-lugs brushy train-beat rhythms.
Leftover Salmon The sound of Colorado’s legendary Leftover Salmon is unmistakable: fluid, loose-limbed, and simultaneously rootsy and daring. Fusing an unrivaled improvisational fervor to a dizzying combination of bluegrass, Cajun, funk, Southern rock, boogie, Caribbean, Latin, and jazz influences, Leftover Salmon has earned a legion of diehard fans, critical accolades, and a reputation as one of the most exciting, engaging concert experiences to ever hit the road.

Friday continued Ruthie Foster Texas Tornados
â€œâ€Ś. Music that sounds as if it were naturally fermented from the bayous, cricks and back porches of rural America.â€? – Greg Barr, Houston Press Those who have followed Ruthie Foster’s eclectic musical history know that she can burn down any stage with her combustible blend of soul, blues, rock, folk and gospel.
The ultimate Tex-Mex supergroup, with their infectious, party-ready sound, blending early rock & roll, Mexican folk music, R&B, blues, and whatever other roots music crosses their paths is back!
Ruthie Foster’s songs are a remarkable hybrid of blues, gospel, roots and folk music rich with honest spirituality and emotion. Her simply amazing vocal abilities have critics comparing her to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. Her passionate songs and scintillating live performances attract both the young and old for an uplifting experience of dancing, listening, laughing and even some crying; especially when Ruthie rounds out the joyous occasion with her versions of show-stopping gospel standards.
The Texas Tornados, first assembled in 1989, were composed of some of the genre’s most legendary figures: Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers (Sahm’s bandmate in the groundbreaking Sir Douglas Quintet), Hispanic country star Freddy Fender, and accordion virtuoso Flaco Jimenez. After the passing of Doug and Freddy Fender, the remaining members of the Tornados teamed up with Doug Sahm’s son Shawn Sahm for a tribute of sorts at the Austin SXSW. The response was so overwhelming that the Tornados wanted to share this Tex-Mex party with all. Look for Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyers and Shawn Sahm as well as original Tornado members Louie Ortega and Speedy Spark, Ernie Durawa to take everyone on a Tex-Mex trip with all their favorite Tornado hits as well as your favorite songs by Sir Douglas Quintet – Freddy Fender in loving memory. This will be one big Tex-Mex party not to be missed!
k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang “a golden voice that could fill the Grand Canyon. – New York Times As a singer who covers a wide variety of styles and genres, k.d. lang has won multiple Grammy and Juno awards for her music. The Western Canada native launched her career with a blend of countryrock stylings and playfully punk-like attitude, by turns whimsical and subversive; back then, she practically put the alternative in alt-country. Lang’s strong personality and daring style certainly contribute to her appeal, but, undoubtedly, the sexiest thing about Lang is her expressive voice. Using it, she can draw in her audience with the kind of genuine intimacy few performers can achieve. Known also for her incredible renditions of other well-known songwriters, and her stunning collaborations (Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, and Tony Bennett to name a few), lang has been heaped with praise by none other than Bennett himself, who may in fact be her biggest fan, as he declared to the press what so many fans have come to believe over the last two and a half decades: “She’s the best singer of her generation.

It’s not all that hard to find an artist who’s capable of offering a guided tour of life’s dark clouds – nor is it rare to come into contact with one who can hone in on the silver lining. But the ability to do both with equal grace, well, that’s an altogether rarer gift–and it’s one that Lucinda Williams displays with remarkable Êlan. For the past 30 years, multiple Grammy winner Williams has channeled her perspective as a proud but vulnerable Southern female into a string of stellar albums, each of which weave rock, country, folk and blues so tightly that each of the elements seems to disappear, while perfecting the art of creating intriguing, gritty lyrics to match her distinctive, haunting voice.

Jimmy LaFave “Jimmy LaFave stands out like a pint of Guinness in a bar full of miller Lites”—Associated Press Veteran Austin roots-rocker Jimmy LaFave is one of those rare guys who could sing selected passages from the Sears catalog and bring a grateful tear to your eye. His crystalline tenor conveys so much transparent emotion that it grants poignancy to sentiments that might ring trite or hackneyed otherwise, sort of a mix between Rod Stewart and Steve Forbert, with the phrasing of Van Morrison thrown in for good measure. Likewise, the songwriter/guitarist has a knack for crafting simple, melodic jewels of pure feeling that don’t need to rely on fancy word play to dial in crisp and clear. Over the years, he has developed into what could be called a “roadhouse arena rocker” who’s capable of belting out anthemic rockers and tender ballads, bringing a passionate rock & roll energy to his original folk songs, whether he’s playing solo or with a band.

Saturday continued Poor Man’s Whiskey …an original distillation, a tasty burn that goes down with a kick and lingers beautifully when it hits your gut.” – Dennis Cook, Jambase. comThe Bay Area’s outlaw music bards bring a reputation for highenergy live shows and an incomparable fusion of folk, punk, rock, and disco to stages and festivals worldwide. This “High-Octane Hootenanny” will certainly delight those interested in a footstompin’ good time. Poor Man’s Whiskey has evolved into a ragged, spontaneous beast pulling from equally deep wells of story-telling originals, expertly crafted covers and zany on-stage shenanigans. The band has been winning over national audiences with their upbeat performances, zany stage antics, and infectious songs. While seamlessly integrating acoustic and electric instruments the band weaves tales of everyday life, inviting the audience to become a part of each show. The band will be doing a special Kate Wolf song set on the Red Tail Hawk Stage on Saturday to celebrate their new CD full of Kate’s songs; entitled Like A River.
Justin Townes Earle “Earle sings like a honky-tonk hero and thinks like a 21st century man. He’s sharp and young, and has soul to burn—” – Guitar Aficionado Winner of the 2011 Americana Music Award for Song of the Year, Justin Townes Earle is an anomaly. He’s tall as the day is long, all angles and elbows and a hard stare, both welcoming and deadly serious. He’s Nashville North, all set up in lower Manhattan now— just like his hero Woody Guthrie, with twang and charm intact. At 25, the younger Earle crafts modern songs with elements of blues, classic country and rock, channeling Closing Time era Tom Waits and dirges of Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town. Named for singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt and offspring to Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle plays music that’s a credit to his roots, referencing a wide array of musical influences with a style that sounds at once old and new. The best aspects of classic country take on a tinge of rock to create a uniquely 21st-century Americana sound.

Sunday Cache Valley Drifters
Rita Hosking
An outgrowth of informal picking sessions, the Cache Valley Drifters continue to bring a modern outlook to bluegrass and country music. Their performances are as likely to include bluegrass-ized interpretations of songs by Paul Simon, Leon Russell, and Cream as they are to feature tunes by the late country folksinger Kate Wolf or traditional hill country material. The Cache Valley Drifters’ association with Wolf is natural considering that the band’s longest-standing member, Bill Griffin, toured with her backup band and produced her last recordings
The songs of Rita Hosking are as fragile as a newborn baby, and defiant as a West Virginia coal miner.” – Stuart Mason, Fiddlefreak Folk Review In scorching form, Northern California’s Rita Hosking sings of forest fires, culture clash, demolition derbies, the working class and hope. Rita’s style of country-folk has been lauded for story and sense of place, and her performances praised for capturing the audience. This California girl comes by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her family’s frontier experience and Rita’s fans call her “the real deal.” A descendant of Cornish miners who sang in the mines, Rita grew up with deep regard for folk music and the power of the voice.
Ferron “Ferron writes of love with the relentless introspection of Leonard Cohen, and, as with classic Bob Dylan, her songs’ tough, questioning attitude sometimes gives way to an unexpected.” – Rolling Stone Magazine Canadian folk singer/songwriter and poet, Ferron is one of the world’s most influential writers and performers of women’s music. Part Cree and Ojibway Indian, Ferron grew up in the Vancouver area in British Columbia, Canada. The eldest of seven children, she was tossed between foster homes, her mother and an abusive stepfather. Her mother’s French Canadian family inspired her to sing and write from an early age. She ran away at age 15, and describes leaving home with only a shopping bag of stuff: “I was 15. In my shopping bag I had a change of clothes, a toothbrush, my A&W uniform, and a Leonard Cohen album. No record player.” She has gone on to become one of Canada’s most famous and enduring folk singers. In recent years Ferron has offered writing workshops and creativity retreats, both at the Fen Sanctuary and at locations throughout North America. This August she will celebrate her 60th birthday with a concert at her home in Three Rivers Michigan. In August she will also host her fifth annual Fen fest event, a week-long creativity workshop featuring daily talk circles, quiet reflection in the woods and on the river, and daily sharing of participants’ creative work.
Ruth Moody Band “...classically elegant”—Patrick Langston, Sing Out! Ruth Moody is a Juno Award winning songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Founding member of the internationally renowned, Billboardcharting trio The Wailin’ Jennys and former lead singer of the Canadian roots band Scruj MacDuhk (the band that would later become The Duhks), she has performed in sold-out venues around the world, made numerous critically-acclaimed albums, and has appeared more than a dozen times on the national radio show A Prairie Home Companion. Although best known for her work with The Wailin’ Jennys, Ruth is an artist of exceptional depth and grace in her own right. Critics have lauded her ethereal vocals, impressive multi-instrumentalism (she plays guitar, banjo, accordion, piano, and bodhrán), and her talent as a songwriter. Writing with a maturity and wisdom that belies her age, her songs are timeless, universal, and exceptionally well crafted, all sung with an intimacy and honesty that is unmistakably her own.

Brokedown in Bakersfield
“Has actually gotten better as he’s gotten older”—New York Times
Brokedown in Bakersfield is a collective of acclaimed West Coast artists joining forces in a spirited tribute to the Bakersfield sound: California country music made raw and rocking, spiked with twang and sweetened with heartfelt harmonies. The group features Lebo of ALO on pedal steel, Scott Law on Telecaster, singer Nicki Bluhm of Gramblers fame, Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips on vocals and acoustic guitar, and ALO rhythm section partners Steve Adams and Dave Brogan. Drawing from the powerful songbooks of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Gram Parsons and more, Brokedown in Bakersfield showcases the striking songwriting and instrumentation of guitar-slinging country sounds that added oil to the Dust Bowl life of ‘60s-era Southern California—on the road, in the truck, out the back, and at the honky tonk.
Grammy Award-winning American songwriter, folk singer, humorist, and actor Loudon Wainwright III, or LW3 for short, is a cherished icon of American folk music, a darkly witty and touchingly personal songwriter and storyteller. He started out in the folk clubs of New York and Boston before going on to a long career that’s encompassed both music and acting. He has given birth to over 20 albums (as well as fathering some very successful musical offspring), written folk classics including “Dead Skunk” and “The Man Who Couldn’t Cry,” and created music for film and theater. Few make the personal universal better than Wainwright, singing for us all on the topics of decline, death and family dysfunction.

CD Release
Saturday, Sept. 29 at 8pm

If you need to go into town during the festival, please contact Security Central for the best in/out access.
In addition to their solo careers, Alisa and Kimball have performed with such nationally recognized artists as folk legend Tom Paxton, John Gorka, and Trapezoid founder Paul Reisler.
