Welcome to the 2015 Festival Welcome to the 20th annual Kate Wolf Music Festival, the

wonderful recipe for creating a festival of friends new and old.

fifteenth here at beautiful Black Oak Ranch, and four days this year, for the very first time. Many dedicated people come together year after year to make this memorable event happen, and everyone who works hard to put this festival together appreciates your ongoing support. We extend a hearty thank you to our sponsors and the numerous folks that work with a smile to help provide the highest quality experience for us all.

We hope you enjoy the festival and spread that joy to others around you. In the words of the great Jimmy Durante song, “Make someone happy, Make just someone happy, And you will be happy too.” And let’s not forget the wonderful Louis Armstrong, and his song, “When you’re smilin’ keep on smilin’, the whole world smiles with you.

We send our many thanks to the Black Oak Ranch community for opening their gates again to share the peace and magic of their beautiful land. Please do your part by respecting their space, and your festival neighbors. What better way to celebrate a true sense of community, and a woman that embodied that spirit (Kate Wolf),

than to share time, music, and space in a peaceful, positive, and caring way. Kindness, gentleness, friendliness, patience and understanding are the essential ingredients for a diverse group of folks to successfully share time and space together time and again, thru the years. We have all been privileged to share in this

And when you’re laughin’, oh when you’re laughin’, the sun comes shinin’ through.” And remember, when you do leave, double check to make sure you have all of your belongings with you, and by all means, please drive safely. All the best. Cheers, Back Roads Productions and the Festival Staff

Friday Roy Rogers & the Delta Rhythm Kings featuring Carlos Reyes Friday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 2:15 pm Friday (Hangin’ w/Charlie Musselwhite) – Arlo Stage – 8:45 pm “Sounds the way good bourbon tastes, smooth and with a kick.” – Spin “ “Rogers is an exceptionally articulate slide guitarist, whether he’s scorching Robert Johnson’s ‘Ramblin’ Blues’ or taking a lovely, lyrical journey… or rockin’ it out. One of the rare guitar heroes who values feeling over flash.” – Rolling Stone Considered one of the world’s top slide guitarists, Roy Rogers has been a spectacle of sight and sound for over three decades. Together with his band The Delta Rhythm Kings (bassist Steve Ehrmann and drummer Billy Lee Lewis), Rogers continues to electrify audiences around the globe with his eclectic blend of contemporary blues, Americana and roots music. A master of his craft, Rogers constantly stretches the boundaries of slide guitar, building his own bridge between traditional blues riffs and modern day rock and roll. Today, his distinct style of playing is instantly recognizable by blues aficionados. Aside from John Lee Hooker, Rogers has performed and/or recorded with a wide array of artists including Miles Davis, Taj Mahal, Norton Buffalo, Linda Ronstadt, Sammy Hagar, Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana and Steve Miller. Rogers has been recognized with eight Grammy nominations for his work as an internationally acclaimed producer and performer, and three W.C. Handy Award nominations as Best Blues Guitar instrumentalist. Carlos Reyes, recording artist, producer, engineer, harpist and violinist has been breaking musical barriers since his first public performance at the age of five. Born in Paraguay South America, he began his musical education at the age of three and a half on the violin. Since then he has taken the native 36 string Paraguayan Harp, and it’s music, to new and ground-breaking levels. Along with an international musical reputation, Mr. Reyes has amassed a large, enthusiastic, Bay Area following. His charismatic personality and outstanding musical talents are a potent combination with which he performs an extensive and entertaining repertoire.

Charlie Musselwhite Friday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 3:45 pm • Friday (Hangin’ w/Roy Rogers) – Arlo Stage – 8:45 pm • Saturday – Utahpia Stage – 9:35 pm “His delivery is as thick as molasses and as warm and rich as freshly ploughed soil on a Mississippi morning. He draws from a deep pool of emotion, brings it to life when he plays, and invites us to jump on in.” – BluesWax Mississippi born Musselwhite is one of the most revered blues musicians in the world. The harmonica master, also a respected singer and songwriter in his own right, has won countless awards during his legendary career including induction into the Blues Hall of Fame and collaborated with innumerable musical giants of the past 50 years; including Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Big Joe Williams, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder and John Lee Hooker, just to name a few. “Blues is a feeling,” Musselwhite points out. “It doesn’t have to be a certain chord change. You could have 1-4-5 chord changes without that feeling and it wouldn’t be the blues. B.B. King could sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and it would be the blues.”

Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real Friday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 5:35 pm • Saturday – Arlo Stage – 11:55 pm “Lukas’s voice is uncannily Willie, without aping it whatsoever, just the natural, high-register tone with perfect pitch and control that tends to decay in a warble at the end of phrases just like pops… And then you get to Lukas’s guitar playing, an attribute all his own. He very well may be an outright guitar god in the making. The younger Nelson can flat out shred with marvelous taste, which is a good thing for a young man trying to shed the shadow of a legendary father so knucklehead music writers quit making references to it all the time and just focus on him.” – savingcountrymusic.com At the young age of 25, Lukas Nelson comes across as a confident bandleader with plenty of bravado but none of the ego you’d expect from the son of one of country music’s greatest heroes. Those who haven’t seen Nelson yet may be expecting a younger duplicate of Willie, and will quickly realize that you won’t find that, but rather an eager musician searching for his own voice. He and his band seem to take pride in being adventurous, switching their sound from funk to soul to reggae and pure rock ‘n’ roll on a song-by-song basis. Slicing through it all with the scorching guitar work of Nelson who, while no doubt rooted in the psychedelic blues of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix, takes on the role of musical chameleon by complimenting the mood of each song without overdoing it. Friday Playing for Change Band Friday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 7:50 pm Saturday – Arlo Stage – 4:30 pm “Playing for Change wants to bring the world together through music. That may be an impossible goal, but if anyone can do it, it can.” – Dave Howell, mcall.com Playing For Change was founded in 2004 and is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. Playing for Change’s first single “Stand By Me” began with a Santa Monica street performer named Roger Ridley. Playing for Change recorded Ridley’s live public performance and then traveled the world recording more and more musicians to collaborate on the track. As of Aug 2013, the video has over 60 million views on YouTube alone. The creation of the Playing For Change Band has helped us to realize a dream of uniting the musicians we met during our journey on one stage. The result is a unique fusion of influences and talents in constant evolution since the first concerts in 2008. Grandpa Elliott, legendary street musician from New Orleans, sings alongside Clarence Bekker (Netherlands), Titi Tsira (South Africa), Jason Tamba (Congo) and Mermans Mosengo (Congo). The rhythm section features Juan Carlos Portillo (Venezuela) on the bass, Raul Pineda (Cuba) on drums, Vasti Jackson (USA) on guitar and Keiko Komaki (Japan) on keyboards. To see this band perform live is an original and emotional experience, one that leaves audiences touched by the music’s unifying power; that of musicians who have traveled thousands of miles from their homes, united in purpose and chorus.

Angelique Kidjo Friday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 9:55 pm “Being Africa’s premier diva is not a crown that Kidjo wears lightly. As an African, she says, she comes from a place with problems. But as a musician, she argues, she can solve them.” – Time Born in Benin (West Africa), Angelique Kidjo is a Grammy award-winning recording artist deemed “Africa’s premier diva” by Time Magazine. If you have seen, heard, or read about Kidjo before, then you already know the global popularity of her music, the power and clarity of her voice, and the worldwide adoration afforded to her iconic stage persona. But what none of that conveys is the experience of being in the presence of such a small but fearless human being. Because when we say that Kidjo makes an audience get up and dance, we don’t merely mean that her music inspired them to do so. We mean that she commanded it, explicitly, and there was really just no other alternative. Angelique has also translated her distinctive work in the arts to that of philanthropy; by promoting education for girls in Africa through her foundation, Batonga, and as a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador, she travels the world to inspire and empower.

Saturday Sherry Austin with Henhouse Saturday (Kate Wolf song set) – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 11:45 am Sunday – Utahpia Stage – 7:15 pm “The rooster may crow but Sherry Austin and Henhouse deliver the goods with power, passion and drive.Their polished vocals and expert instrumentals take the audience for an unforgettable, supercharged ride down the back roads of folk and country.” – Marky Stark, Canyon Acoustic Society Henhouse has found that magical combination of music that is often wished for, but rarely found. Whether singing their own material, or the songs of Kate Wolf and others, these four great vocalists come together to form an exquisite blend of harmonies. Their music truly engages listeners with their warm and captivating spirit. With four of the most popular Americana vocalists in the Monterey Bay area, Henhouse delights their fans with their engaging stage presence, upbeat songs, and great harmonies. The band is fronted by Sherry Austin on rhythm guitar and vocals, Sharon Allen on vocals and guitar, Tracy Parker on bass and vocals, Jim Norris on percussion, and Santa Cruz legend Patti Maxine on lap steel and dobro. Their music ranges from sweet love songs to gritty, rockin’ songs about cars, trains, and love gone wrong. They sing with authority and passion, and their distinctive blend of folk, country and rock is filled with warmth and conviction.

Holly Near Friday (In-the-Round w/Cris Williamson & Barbara Higbie) – Arlo Stage – 6:20 pm Saturday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 2:05 pm “One of the remarkable things about Holly Near is not that she possesses one of the clearest, most expressive voices on the acoustic stage, but that she can marry that remarkable voice to a political message and then wrap it in a lovely melody that stays with you.” – Roberta B. Schwartz (Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange) Born in Ukiah, CA, Holly Near is respected around the world for her music and activism, and her joy and passion inspire people to join in her celebration of the human spirit. Equally compelling at her shows or through your speakers, her music fully engages listeners in the world around them. Holly has made a career speaking to anyone in the world who believes in peace, justice, and feminism, a wonderful spectrum of humanity. During her long career in folk and protest music, Holly Near has worked with a wide array of musicians, including Ronnie Gilbert, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Mercedes Sosa, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Meg (Shambhavi) Christian, Cris Williamson, Linda Tillery, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Harry Belafonte, and many others, as well as the Chilean exile group Inti-Illimani. Holly Near has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, NARAS, Ms. Magazine (Woman of the Year), and the Legends of Women’s Music Award.

Judy Collins Saturday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 3:45 pm Sunday – Arlo Stage – 4:40 pm “I think people who are creative are the luckiest people on earth. I know that there are no shortcuts, but you must keep your faith in something Greater than You, and keep doing what you love. Do what you love, and you will find the way to get it out to the world.” – Judy Collins Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. Judy Collins, now 74, is as creatively vigorous as ever, writing, touring worldwide, and nurturing fresh talent. She is a modern day Renaissance woman who is also an accomplished painter, filmmaker, record label head, musical mentor, and an in-demand keynote speaker for mental health and suicide prevention. She continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart. Page 10 • 2015 Kate Wolf Music Festival

Saturday The Wailin’ Jennys Saturday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 5:50 pm Sunday – Arlo Stage – 7:10 pm “Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody, and Heather Masse, sing like siblings and play like seasoned veterans, resulting in a seamless, understated sound that feels both perennial and distinctly Canadian” – allmusic.com Starting as a happy accident of solo singer/songwriters getting together for a onetime-only performance at a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Wailin’ Jennys have grown over the years into one of today’s most beloved international folk acts. Founding members Moody and Mehta along with New York-based Masse continue to create some of the most exciting music on the folk-roots scene, stepping up their musical game with each critically lauded recording and thrilling audiences with their renowned live performances. With their varying backgrounds, each of the Jennys is unique in their individual expression. Together they forge a unified folk-pop sound — all delivered with the irresistible vocal power of three.

Smokey Robinson Saturday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 8:05 pm “Smokey Robinson was like God in our eyes.” – Paul McCartney “With his tone and delivery, you could fall in love with Smokey,” says fellow Motown star Martha Reeves. As a teenager, Robinson wanted to sing Platters-style doo-wop, but he ended up inventing his own vocal style, even as he and Berry Gordy Jr. created the Motown sound. His high, delicate delivery marked him as not so much a tenor as a male soprano, able to glide into a heartbreaking falsetto that remains one of the most distinctive sounds of 20th-century pop. On Miracles hits like “The Tracks of My Tears,” “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” and especially “Ooo Baby Baby” (with its near-wordless but endlessly affecting chorus), that voice made the thrills and heartbreaks of romance sound equally seductive. Once pronounced by Bob Dylan as America’s “greatest living poet,” Smokey Robinson’s career spans over 4 decades of hits. During the course of his 50-year career in music, Robinson has accumulated more than 4,000 songs to his credit and continues to thrill sold-out audiences around the world with his high tenor voice, impeccable timing, and profound sense of lyric. Never resting on his laurels, Smokey Robinson remains a beloved icon in our musical heritage.

Poor Buttered Rumskey Saturday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 10:50 pm What do you get when you mix Poor Man’s Whiskey and Hot Buttered Rum? None other than a powerhouse set of up to 11 musicians. Sometimes they’ll be altogether onstage, and at times in combinations of various other numerical configurations. Brought together under this moniker for the first time here at Black Oak Ranch at the 2010 Festival, this highly energetic combo has not been with us since 2011. This year, they will be closing out the Red Tail Hawk Stage on Saturday night, performing their own interpretation of Paul Simon’s Graceland album, along with some other Simon tunes. They recently performed this show together to a sold out, ecstatic audience, at the Fillmore in San Francisco.

Sunday Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks Sunday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 1:40 pm “So few truly original figures exist in pop music that Dan Hicks should be a national treasure.” – San Francisco Chronicle Beginning as a drummer in the seminal 60’s San Francisco rock band The Charlatans, and continuing with the unique and legendary Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, Dan Hicks is widely acknowledged as one of the central defining figures in American roots music. He has earned a reputation as a true original with his signature eclecticism and humor. In a welcome return to the rock ‘n’ roll stage, Dan Hicks, the father of folk-swing, is again appearing with the Hot Licks and reviving the repertoire and ambiance that built his reputation in the early 1970s. He continues to carve his own way through a number of genres from proto-psychedelia to western swing and jazz; from Tin Pan Alley to country blues, while always cultivating his own unique sound.

The Waifs Saturday – Arlo Stage – 9:50 pm Sunday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 3:25 pm “This band should be bottled!” – ABC/Australia “Unflinchingly honest and musically exploratory.” – Billboard Beloved Australian folk rock band, The Waifs are returning to North America with a 5-piece sound that’s better than ever. A trip that began in a van in 1992, with the three troubadours playing gigs anywhere in Australia that would have them, has led The Waifs to multiple ARIA awards, platinum albums and successful tours across the world, including opening for Bob Dylan in North America and Australia in 2003. The band has been on an amazing journey, through good times and bad, that has come together for the love of music and each other. “We’re a family and we love playing music with each other and over the years I think we’ve contributed something ... made a difference”, says guitarist Josh Cunningham. “We’ve made simple songs that resonate with everyday people. That’s all we can do. There’s value in keeping that going.”

Creek Information The creek that runs along the western edge of the festival grounds is called Ten Mile Creek, and is a salmon bearing stream that has traditionally seen annual migrations for spawning by Steelhead, Chinook and Coho salmon. The owners of Black Oak Ranch have been working closely with a variety of groups endeavoring to study the creek and it’s inhabitants in order to help in keeping this stream a healthy place for all. In recent years drought conditions has exacerbated the problems facing the flora and fauna along the riparian zone so we are asking everyone to be especially sensitive and watchful when entering and using the creek this weekend. Do not go into the trees and bushes that line the creek, only use the access points we’ve established for entering and exiting.

You may notice that the stream level at the usual swimming hole is very shallow this year. This is in part because of low water conditions, but it is also because last winter we had a rather large storm that filled the stream from bank to bank, putting the entire beachfront area under 6 to 10 feet of water. When the water abated we found

that a large amount if gravel that used to be upstream on an exposed gravel bar had migrated downstream, ending up in the swimming hole we’ve been enjoying for years. However, if when entering the creek you turn right, downstream, and walk a little ways you will find deeper water where you can submerse yourself to your hearts delight.

Sunday Iron and Wine Sunday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 6:00 pm “Beam writes with an artist’s eye, his songs alive with place and time.” – Betty Clarke, The Guardian “A good song should be a poem and have some kind of element that you recognize is true, but couldn’t be expressed in a conversation.” – Iron & Wine Iron and Wine is the stage name of Sam Beam, and artist who comes equipped with warm, hushed vocals and an imitation-worthy beard. It’s easy for casual listeners to place Iron and Wine in the finely crafted box of Folkinspired, Indie-rock. However, those listeners would be mostly wrong. The earliest albums from Iron and Wine were modest recordings with wistful instrumentation— essentially Beam on acoustic guitar—and forlorn lyricism, but still contained the hint of musical playfulness that suggested that there was always something more. But after a couple of albums, Beam began to show his hand and started experimenting with arrangements and styles pushing him well past the acoustic troubadour trappings. This is how he hooks you: one man versus noise and confusion. That’s what makes an Iron and Wine concert such a fine night. The performance is stripped of pretense. It is subdued without being severe, and while there’s a distinct reverence for his own material, Sam Beam has a selfeffacing style, a humility about him that invites you in while he plays. His songs are lorn evenings by the fire, whiskey in tin cups, rocking chairs.

Lisa Fischer and Grand Baton Sunday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 8:00 pm “A chanteuse with a larynx laced with gold and a backbone that she’s not afraid to let slip as she moves and grooves to the beat of her own creative drum” – Examiner.com Lisa Fischer is a singer who really gets around. Her life is an endless round of planes, trains, and automobiles, rehearsals and fittings. On tour with the Rolling Stones, Sting, Chris Botti or Nine Inch Nails, her name may not be on the marquee, but she doesn’t care. She’s busy loving every minute of it. It’s easy to see why she works all the time: her astonishing range, her spot-on intonation, her mastery of the stage, the way her tone wraps itself around your heart and won’t let go, the infectious quality of her time feel: these things keep her on top of the list. But it’s the sweetness of her smile, her visible pleasure in watching her band mates do their stuff, her glamorous-girl-nextdoor quality that make fans all over the world think she’s their own secret discovery (despite the fact that the YouTube version of her duet with Mick Jagger on ‘Gimme Shelter’ has millions of hits).

Steve Earle and the Dukes Sunday – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 9:45 pm “Steve Earle has a gift for articulating the plight of the downtrodden and misunderstood. A knack for stepping inside his fellow man’s boots and feeling the wear on the sole, the caked dirt between the treads, and the permanent awkwardness of the fit.” – Matt Melis, consequenceofsound.net “I grew up counterculture. I’m essentially a hippie, and I’m essentially a folkie.” – Steve Earle “I don’t believe that songwriting has to be profound, but I truly believe that it’s a crime for you to go outta your way for it not to be.” – Steve Earle Earle is a master storyteller. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris have recorded some of his songs. In 1986, his debut record, “Guitar Town,” was released and shot to No. 1 on the country charts and immediately established the term “New Country.” Earle has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. Throughout his more than 30-year career, Earle has mined the rich veins of American roots music from country to rock and roll, folk and rockabilly. As someone who has been married and divorced seven times, Steve Earle knows a thing or two about lost love. On his latest release, Terraplane, the 60-year-old singer-songwriter, backed by his long-time support group The Dukes, exorcises his demons over failed relationships with his take on the blues, one of the few genres he had yet to tackle during his lengthy career. And tackle it he does, in a variety of styles that range from the master Robert Johnson and Mick Taylor-era Stones, to the blues swing and boogie that Earle’s native Texas is famous for. A Tribute to Dearly Departed Musical Friends - B.B. King and Pete Seeger It seems like on a monthly basis we lose important people who set the path for all of us. Sometimes these people do things that affect us immediately, sometimes eventually, and sometimes continually. In the cases of these two individuals, BB King and Pete Seeger, they fit all of the criteria of important role models who influenced segregation, integration and popular music. Seeger fought and sang for civil rights and desegregation in the South while King influenced white and black musical integration nationally. Each of these men are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and have been awarded both a Kennedy Center and the National Medal of Honor. Individually, BB has been selected to the Blues Hall of Fame, the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame, and received an honorary Doctor of Music from Yale University. Pete has been selected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and received both a Lifetime Grammy and a Harvard Arts Medal. Seeger’s agenda parallels the concerns of the American left: He sang for the labor movement in the 1940s and 1950s, for civil rights marches and anti-Vietnam War rallies in the 1960s, and for environmental, antiwar, nonviolence, and freedom causes in the 1970s and beyond. King, in the mid-1960s, walked into what he thought was an old Black Blues club he used to play in San Francisco and believed his agent made a booking mistake because the audience were Page 16 • 2015 Kate Wolf Music Festival

He purchased his first guitar at age 12, became a truck driver, sang on street corners in Memphis and eventually become a local DJ. As a young musician he performed under his nickname “Beale Street Blues Boy”, which became “Blues Boy”, and eventually just B.B. King is generally considered one of the most influential blues guitarists and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. His appearances include everything from performing at the Vatican’s fifth annual Christmas concert, to The Blues Brothers 2000 movie. BB also has the distinction of giving Wavy Gravy, a perennial at the Kate Wolf Music Festival, his unique name at the 1969 Texas International Pop Festival where both were performing. While Seeger was a mentor to younger musicians including Bob Dylan, Don McLean and Bruce Springsteen, BB was the inspiration for a generation of rock performers including Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and U2. Pete Seeger and BB King both stood up for their beliefs: musical, political or otherwise. Their long lives are a vision for all generations, American and non-American alike.

dried up. Seeger, in typical Seeger-style described himself as a “communist with a small ‘c’, and sadly, Ms. Gilbert passed away at 88 just two weeks ago on June 6, 2015. Coincidentally, Mr. Seeger passed away at age 94 on January 27, 2014,

Greening Initiative: Deposits on reusable plates and cups In our ongoing efforts to present as green a festival as is possible, over the last few years we have endeavored to convert our beer cups from disposables to reusables. We have tried a few different approaches and this year we will be bringing back the same system we used last year. When you go to the beer garden to purchase a beer you have two options. First option is to buy a beer for $6 (same price as last year) and give us a deposit of $2.00 for your reusable plastic cup. When you finish your beer you can return the cup for a $1.00 refund or for a ticket that you can use for the deposit the next time you want a beer. At the end of the weekend you can return the ticket to the beer bar for a $1.00 refund. The second option is to purchase a 20th anniversary commemorative Kate Wolf Music Festival bamboo cup for $6 and avoid the $3 deposit. There is a limited supply of these commemorative cups, which you can use all weekend and take home when you leave.

additional charge per beer. If you would rather not keep track of your cup all weekend long, you can avail yourself to our deposit/reuse program. In our food court we are again using a system of reusable plates, flatware and cups where you pay a deposit each time you get a plate or cup at a food booth. When you return the dishware to the cleaning station you can get a ticket good for the deposit the next time you go to a food booth and order food. At the end of the festival you can bring your tickets to the refund booth located at the dishwashing station in the food court for a $1.00 deposit refund. The portion not returned will go to covering the costs of lost dishware and the dishwashing crew.

Over the years we have looked for ways to stay in the forefront of green festival operations. This pathway has lead us to things such as running all of our generators on locally produced biodiesel made from recycled grease from local businesses. In our desire to use less Photo by Tim Konrad water we have been using a dust suppressant This cup will cost $6 empty or $12 called Dust-off, made from seawater full of beer. The thought behind these and approved for use by organic farms. options is to provide a clean, healthy This allows us to refrain from using alternative to disposable cups. The many thousands of gallons of water on operation to wash, dry and re-supply our roads and keeps the festival site cups to the bar all weekend long comes much more dust free than water ever at a fairly hefty price, which we are trying could. Our clean up crew are adept at to partially cover by keeping a portion of sorting through all garbage to remove the deposit. If you would rather re-use recyclables from the refuse stream, your cup all weekend long, there is no keeping landfill to a minimum. Back Roads Productions

Many of our crews use bicycles in their efforts to move around the site. We encourage patrons to bring their bikes as well, providing bike racks at the entrances to the music meadow where you can lock up your bike while enjoying the show. Pedicabs are available for a fee from our friends at Pedicab People Movers who can move you all over the festival grounds as needed. They are located right next to the fire crew camp by the Tiki poles. We offer an online ride share program for those wishing to share car space when coming to the festival too. All of these things add up. We appreciate your help in trying to make the Kate Wolf Music Festival as green as it can be. Thanks for all of your efforts!

Hobo Jungle Campfire Nightly A Kate Wolf Music Festival tradition, the word is out that some of the most touching, funny and creative songs are heard every night around the campfire down by the creek (see site map on page 2) after the main stage ends. Bring your instruments, songs, and your No–Doze for this sing–a–thon of some of the best music you’ll hear—yours! Everyone gets to sing. Some great stories are shared as well. We do ask all attending the Hobo Jungle to remember that some folks like to sleep, and the tent camping area isn’t too far from the fire, so this year when a song comes to a close instead of clapping and hollering your approval, try snapping your fingers, or waving your hands above your head, in quiet appreciation. 2015 Kate Wolf Music Festival • Page 17

Fire Safety Comes First As you all know California is experiencing an extreme drought this year and since we are located in the center of a rural area, it is of utmost importance that everyone pays attention to fire safety while on site at Black Oak Ranch. In order to provide a safe environment for a few thousand campers we have made arrangements with the Myers Flat Volunteer Fire Department to bring their beautiful fire engine here for the weekend so we can have a crew on hand for whatever emergencies come up. In addition we have a contract with the Long Valley Fire Protection District for their assistance in medical and fire emergencies. We also have a small 4x4 Toyota fire tender with a 150 gallon water tank available for quick access all over the festival grounds. If you see a fire, report it immediately to the fire or security crew, or any staff you see. There are a series of red fire barrels located along the main roads near street signposts in the campground. Next to these large barrels are 5 gallon buckets filled with wet burlap sacks. In an emergency these buckets can be carried directly to the fire source and the wet burlap sacks can be thrown on the fire, as well as the water in the bucket. The large barrels are for re-filling the 5 gallon buckets if more water is needed. Please never use these barrels or buckets except in emergencies! It is important that they are in place when they are needed. Let’s all do what we can to make these options never become necessary. The fire policy at Black Oak Ranch is no open flames. This means no candles. No charcoal BBQ’s, but gas cook stoves and gas lanterns are ok when you clear a space all around of at least 6 feet underneath the stove to prevent sparks from catching fire. No campfires, fireworks, fire juggling, flaming sword swallowing, burning bushes, you get it, NO OPEN FLAMES PERIOD!

More Performers The T Sisters Thursday – Arlo Stage – 5:30 pm Friday – Revival Tent – 6:45 pm “As a snappy stage moniker the T Sisters makes perfect sense for Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen, who perform together as an irresistibly joyful sibling combo steeped in American roots music. But given their far-ranging creative proclivities, they could be more accurately described as the A to Z Sisters.” – Andrew Gilbert, Mercury News It is said the deeper a tree’s roots run, the taller it can grow. For siblings Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen of the T SISTERS, their roots as songwriters are buried in a narrative of family and sisterhood. California born and raised and now based in Oakland, the Tietjens have been singing together their whole lives. “We sang together when we were little, making up songs and writing plays together in the attic of our grandparents’ house,” says the trio. The three sisters, typically accompanied by upright bass, guitar, banjo, percussion and mandolin, captivate audiences with close harmonies, inventive arrangements, and plenty of sass. When performing their lively set of originals and covers—sometimes in arresting a capella—they call to mind classic girl groups from the Andrews Sisters and The Ronettes to The Roches and the Dixie Chicks. Touching on elements of folk, Americana, gospel, R&B, bluegrass and soul, the T Sisters weave evocative stories with a sound that is at once modern and timeless.

Poor Man’s Whiskey Thursday (Kate Wolf song set) Arlo Stage – 7:20 pm Friday – Utahpia Stage – after Angelique Kidjo set ends on Red Tail Hawk Stage “They groan with the rundown weight of good Drive-By Truckers…PMW’s sway of smarts and wit infuses their originals, where they delight in jumbling elements in a way that pops like super balls in a cement mixer. String band? Sort of. Rock band? Sure. Prog-metal enthusiasts and swing time fellas? Absolutely. In the end, they are an original distillation, a tasty burn that goes down with a kick and lingers beautifully when it hits your gut.” – Dennis Cook, Jambase.com Northern California’s outlaw music bards bring a reputation for high-energy live shows and an incomparable fusion of bluegrass/old-time, southern rock, and old school jam to stages and festivals world-wide. Their “High-Octane Hootenanny” will certainly delight those interested in a foot-stomping good time. Over the years Poor Man’s Whiskey has evolved into a ragged, spontaneous beast pulling from equally deep wells of storytelling originals, expertly crafted covers and zany on-stage shenanigans. They have graced our stages many times over the years, performing everything from Kate Wolf’s music to Pink Floyd, to Allman Brothers Band, to Old & In The Way; not to mention their own original material. Poor Man’s Whiskey has also mixed with a variety of other bands, as they will again this year, once again teaming up with Hot Buttered Rum to bring us another round of the very popular Poor Buttered Rumskey.

Houston Jones Thursday – Arlo Stage – 9:00 pm Friday (Oldies) – Utahpia Stage – 6:35 pm “They are “as good as any singing and picking I’ve heard in my thirty years in the music business.” - Bob Brown, club owner and manager of Huey Lewis A San Francisco based high-octane Americana band that performs an original repertoire that ranges from bluegrass and folk to blues and gospel, Houston Jones invites you into a world of musical virtuosity and storytelling ranging from the myths of ancient Greece to the red dirt back roads of Waskom, Texas. The acoustic heart of the band beats with the passion of five lifetimes lived in a musical landscape of revival tents to Irish pubs, New Orleans to the Great Plains to Motown, a church in Cape Cod to a punk club in Berkeley. This explosive, wide-ranging performance will touch your heart and get your feet moving of their own volition. More on page 22 Back Roads Productions

More Performers Hot Buttered Rum Thursday – Revival Tent – 10:00 pm • Friday – Arlo Stage – 1:00 pm “Few things rejuvenate the soul like a warm fireside drink after an exhausting day in the snow. Hot Buttered Rum has that effect.Their original songs are instantly familiar and inviting, and their easygoing versions of timeless classics (the Beatles, Hank Williams) belie the intricacy of the arrangements.” – San Francisco Chronicle Hot Buttered Rum lives for songs; be they songs to sing in the shower, songs to crank through your ear-buds at the DMV, songs to name your babies after, or songs to make more babies to. The band’s three songwriters — Nat Keefe, Erik Yates and Aaron Redner — spin tales about the good times, the bad times, and the roads in between, and belt them from the heart in three-part harmony. Bryan Horne’s athletic standup bass and Lucas Carlton’s tasteful percussion combine with the acoustic instruments to create what is California’s own acoustic music. Hot Buttered Rum lives for a good time. The group’s onstage chemistry fuels the lovefest that is a live HBR show. A mindful-recklessness settles in whenever these five guys step out of their front doors in northern California to entertain crowds from Anchorage to Miami.

Emma’s Revolution Friday – Arlo Stage – 2:40 pm • Saturday – Revival Tent – 5:25 pm “With gorgeous close harmonies and unsinkable tunefulness, Emma’s Revolution (the Emma is Goldman) is a classic, globe-trotting duo comprised of activist singer/songwriters Sandy O and Pat Humphries.Their music is progressive, socially conscious and shot-through with intelligence and cutting humor.”- Iowa City Press-Citizen “Great melodies and harmonies with a driving beat that just makes you want to, well, RISE!” – WMNF Radio Smart, funny and informative–like Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart with guitars. Emma’s Revolution is the duo of award-winning activist musicians, Pat Humphries & Sandy O. Called “inspiring, gutsy and rockin’”, Emma’s Revolution’s songs have been sung for the Dalai Lama, praised by Pete Seeger and covered by Holly Near. The duo’s awards include Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and, for the second year in a row, the Washington Area Music Association’s Fan Favorite Award.

Keale Friday – Arlo Stage – 4:30 pm • Saturday (leading the ukulele jam circle) – Revival Tent – 12:35 pm Sunday (Kate Wolf song set) – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 11:20 am “I think that the number one thing for music to do is to share healing and unconditional love and justice…I talk a lot and do a lot of storytelling — I might do a 9-minute introduction to a 2-minute song — but I’m real easy with people, so it doesn’t feel awkward. I’m not an entertainer; I’m an educator, and that’s how I feel — that music is more educational than entertaining, because there’s always something to be said.” – Keale Keale’s roots run deep whether he’s playing music, teaching children or preserving sacred places. His gentle voice and soul have touched people of all generations through song & story. Keale has journeyed among many cultures being of Niihau, Arkansas, Choctaw & Cherokee descent. His hometown of Planada (which means “the Plain-of-nothing”), accompanied by the fragrance of tomatoes, figs and peaches, as well as the cumbia, ranchera music of the Mexican people, provided a rich soil and foundation to life. Born in the islands but raised in Indian Country with the Pomo, Miwok, and Yokut tribes have never left his soul and music. Keale’s music brings forward the legacy of the Keale family. He is nephew to the Hawaiian music legend, Moe Keale (Ukulele virtuoso), and first-cousin to Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (IZ). He is a musician & storyteller following in the spiritual traditions of Niihau--the ‘forbidden island’. The elements of sea, land and sky around him are the current and flow of his music.

More Performers Cris Williamson Friday (In-the-Round w/Holly Near and Barbara Higbie) – Arlo Stage – 6:20 pm Saturday (Changer and the Changed set) – Arlo Stage – 6:55 pm Sunday (Kate Wolf song set) – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 11:20 am “The first time I heard Cris’ music, it was like hearing honey dripped on a cello... Cris has been a whole lot of women’s heroes -- including mine.” – Bonnie Raitt Singer, songwriter, activist, and teacher of the “art of the possible,” Cris Williamson brings her astounding voice to bear on a disarming mixture of joyful up-tempo tunes and poignant ballads, woven together from strands of folk, reggae, and lush pop. Whether she’s playing for a few folks at a small club or for a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall, Cris stirs souls and opens minds with music that celebrates human strength, tenacity, and resilience. In 1975, the twenty-something former schoolteacher recorded The Changer And The Changed, for her brainchild, Olivia Records; the first woman-owned, woman-focused record company. Her music and voice quickly became the soundtrack of a movement, and was the cornerstone of what would become known as “women’s music”—music created, performed, and marketed specifically to women. Today, that recording, The Changer And The Changed, remains one of the bestselling independent releases of all time. Cris currently has more than 30 full recordings to her credit.

Barbara Higbie Friday (In-the-Round w/Holly Near & Cris Williamson) – Arlo Stage – 6:20 pm Saturday (Changer and the Changed set) – Arlo Stage – 6:55 pm Sunday (Kate Wolf song set) – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 11:20 am “A jazz pianist who can write and sing like Laura Nyro and Carole King, a prize-winning folk fiddler who will interpret a John Coltrane tune through a French vocal or add her own lyrics to one of Django Reinhardt’s last compositions, Higbie brings all her gifts to bear…” – Derk Richardson A Grammy nominated, Bammy award winning composer, pianist singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist, Barbara Higbie has performed on more than 65 albums, including a Carlos Santana 2007 release. She has 11 recordings to her credit as well as contributions to 10 compilations that have sold in the millions. As a co-founder, with Darol Anger, of the acoustic super group, “Montreux”, she recorded ” Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival” for Windham Hill Records in 1984, a landmark genre-defining album. As a solo artist, Barbara’s first solo CD “Signs of Life” was named a Washington Post “Top Ten of the Year”. Three other solo releases, “I Surrender”, “Variations on a Happy Ending” and ‘Alive in Berkeley” followed to critical acclaim.

Maria Muldaur and Her Red Hot Bluesiana Band Friday – Arlo Stage – 10:35 pm Saturday – Utahpia Stage – 12:45 pm “Muldaur has one foot in church and another in a Saturday night juke joint as she belts out hand-clapping church rousers, soul ballads and greasy swamp stompers. Over the years her voice has only gotten better, with her pipes now displaying a lusty, full-bodied resonance… she’s one hot N’awlins mama who is way beyond that Oasis at midnight” – Eric Feber, The Pilot Maria Muldaur is best known world-wide for her 1974 mega-hit “Midnight at the Oasis,” which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere; but despite her considerable pop music success, her 50-year career could best be described a long and adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music. In the 40 years since “Midnight at the Oasis,” Maria has toured extensively worldwide and has recorded 40 solo albums covering all kinds of American Roots Music, including Gospel, R&B, Jazz and Big Band (not to mention several award-winning children’s albums), before settling comfortably into her favorite idiom, the Blues, in recent years. Often joining forces with some of the top names in the business, Maria has recorded and produced on-average an album per year, several of which have been nominated for Grammy and other awards. More Performers Achilles Wheel Saturday – Utahpia Stage – after Poor Buttered Rumskey set ends on Red Tail Hawk Stage Sunday – Arlo Stage – 2:25 pm “…what makes them unique is the laid back nonchalance and how they perform their songs! Ideas, played in just seconds by other bands, are celebrated over the whole song by this band! Note by note taken apart and put back together again. This is beautiful old school country jam rock, which almost nobody else plays anymore nowadays!” – Good Times Magazine, Germany Achilles Wheel is a high energy rock ‘n’ roll, roots and world music band from Northern California, featuring award winning songwriting played on numerous stringed instruments and the rhythmic earthquake of two full drum sets. In the wake of their breakout performance at the 2012 Kate Wolf Music Festival, the band has been burning up stages all across California, including the Strawberry Music Festival, the legendary Sweetwater Music Hall and a repeat performance at the Kate Wolf Festival in 2013 that is still being talked about. As original songs go, Achilles Wheel’s are some of the most accessible around and will stay with you long after the excitement of the show is over.

Alisa Fineman & Kimbal Hurd Friday (Kate Wolf sing-along) – Revival Tent 3:20 pm Saturday – Revival Tent – 2:50 pm Sunday (Kate Wolf song set) – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 11:20 am “When you live in a place that you’ve come to love, every once in a while that place taps you on the shoulder and returns your affection... Alisa and Kimball’s music has the same power as that familiar landscape...and suddenly, if only for a moment, you’ve come home.” – Sarah Rabkin U.C. Santa Cruz, Environmental Studies Department Faculty Monterey Bay-based and long-time favorites in the San Francisco Bay area and at our Festival, Alisa and Kimball have earned national acclaim for their songwriting and world music repertoire. Known for her ‘deep, emotional singing voice,’ Alisa’s background in sacred music adds a compelling world music component to this duo’s lush repertoire. She is perfectly complemented by multi-instrumentalist and singer songwriter Kimball Hurd, best known for his role in City Folk. His instrumental prowess adds dimension to the duo’s performances with vocal harmonies and an array of tasteful musical accents on guitar, mandolin, mandola, dobro, banjo and slide guitar. Their appreciation for the ordinary miracles of everyday infuses their songs, which sing to a sense of place, possibility and deeper meaning in all of us.

David Luning Saturday – Arlo Stage – 2:25 pm Sunday – Utahpia Stage – 4:35 pm Sunday (In-the-Round w/The Sam Chase, Mouths of Babes) – Revival Tent – 8:30 pm “Your staunch originality wouldn’t have competition... no one’s doing what you do.” – Keith Urban David Luning’s music has been called “gritty, joyful, soulful Americana.” Whether performing solo or with his full band at festivals or intimate house concerts, Northern California based Indie-Americana artist, David Luning, captivates audiences with his heartwarming humor, rich timbre voice, foot-stomping sing-alongs, and poignant songwriting. While studying film scoring at Berklee College of Music, David was introduced to the music of John Prine, Ryan Adams, Old Crow Medicine Show, Todd Snider, and The Band. “Something just clicked. It was like a slow bolt of lightning that struck my soul. It was honest. The kind of music that spoke of real life, heartaches and loss, but also of heartwarming humor and foot stomping sing-alongs. It was simple and it was real…like a family that I wanted to be a part of. Call it Americana, folk, roots, or alt-country – it resonated with me. I had found my genre, my voice.” That’s when David decided to relocate back to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue a career as an Americana, Alt-country artist. In 2013, David auditioned for American Idol to receive worldwide exposure for his original music, and to be an advocate for Americana music. Out of 75,000 people who auditioned, he made it to the top 100, performing his original song “In Hell I Am”, which appeared on American Idol’s January 16th, 2014 episode, viewed by 18 million across the world. . More Performers The Sam Chase Saturday – Revival Tent – 7:45 pm Sunday (In-the-Round w/David Luning, Mouths of Babes) – Revival Tent – 8:30 pm “As long as the sound is good and everyone is having a good time, it is a dream come true.” – Sam Chase The Sam Chase has a voice like a Nun on the lam with a mouthful of cigarettes and curse words in a lonely bar, drunkenly dancing next to a broken jukebox. His songs are scribbled, not written, on lipstick and sweat stained motel bedsheets because he likes the way the ink bleeds. His guitar runs on diesel and leaks like the morning after too much Whiskey. His is a show you’ll probably want to tattoo on your body so everyone will know that you knew him before he was cool. Hailing from the hills of San Francisco, California, The Sam Chase was chosen the Best Band of SF Weekly’s Best OF The Bay Readers Poll of both 2013 and 2014, and Sam, himself, was chosen Best Singer-Songwriter in SF Bay Guardian’s Best Of The Bay Readers Poll of 2013. Once asked who he would play with and where he would play if he could put together his own dream show, Sam’s answer was “Me and Bruce Springsteen riding Falcor the Lucky Dragon (The Neverending Story) in the middle of a war zone and bringing peace to the land through our music.”

Box Set Duo Trio Friday – Revival Tent – 8:50 pm Saturday – Utahpia Stage – 7:05 pm Sunday – Revival Tent – 5:35 pm “…a cross between the Grateful Dead and The Smothers Brothers.” – Amy Ray, Indigo Girls Jim Brunberg and Jeff Pehrson met in a San Francisco cafe 23 years ago and almost immediately fell into a musical relationship. The Box Set Duo has been entertaining audiences these many years with their powerful songs, brought to life by inspired guitar interplay and vocal harmonies that warm the senses. Box Set is excited about adding their NEW member: Ben Landsverk is a singer and multi-instrumentalist who specializes in finding and creating connectivity between current and traditional musical styles. The subject matter ranges from politics to relationships and everything in between, all delivered with a heart and wit that has brought rave reviews. Keith Greeninger Sunday – Arlo Stage – 10:50 am Sunday – Utahpia Stage – 9:05 pm “Keith Greeninger strides through a rocky soundscape like a creator in command of wind, rain and thunder. His husky baritone is an anchor in a turbulent sea of life. With each successive listen, it seems to get richer and more lush.” – Richard Cucarro from Acoustic Live in NYC Few among us could distill our essence with such elegant simplicity. We want to deconstruct every line for deeper meaning, but there is no need. What Keith Greeninger brings to music, and life for that matter, is authenticity. As a result, there are no barriers between Keith, his music and his audience. This bond stems from Keith’s underlying philosophy that music is first and foremost a gift and a medicine to take part in together. As a singer-songwriter, Keith paints intricate portraits of the human condition with powerful melodic images, deep engaging guitar rhythms and husky, heart-wrenching vocals. His masterfully crafted tunes and powerful presence have earned him the top songwriting awards at the prestigious Telluride Blue Grass Festival, The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Napa Valley Folk Festival. Keith’s records and personal appearances have garnered him a legion of devoted fans, and the respect, admiration and appreciation of music critics far and wide. With nothing more than a guitar in hand and a song with a story to tell, Keith completely captivates his audiences. Keith Greeninger is that rare performer for whom people lean forward in their seats, absorbing every note and every word. They just don’t come any more authentic, or humble for that matter… More on page 24 Back Roads Productions

More Performers Joe Craven Thursday – Revival Tent – 6:50 pm Saturday (vocal and body improv.) – Revival Tent – 11:15 am Sunday (It’s All Music, Ain’t It…workshop) – Revival Tent – 1:25 pm “I have always been a sucker for multi-instrumentalists, but I have never seen a player who is so adept on such disparate instruments. His conga work is both smooth and driving, both rhythmic and musical. His mandolin work…is impressive, but, of course, he is really a fiddle player. His fiddle work… leaves me slack-jawed… It isn’t until Craven steps away from his instruments and begins his convulsive body slapping and countrified scat/beatbox antics that the riddle reveals itself. The man recognizes no boundaries.” – Jambands.com Always looking for the next expression and object to make music with, Joe is a musical madman with anything that has strings attached or not; violin, mandolin, tin can, bedpan, cookie tin, tenor guitar/banjo, mouth bow, canjoe, cuatro, balalaika, boot ‘n lace and doublenecked whatever. He has created music and sound effects for commercials, soundtracks, computer games and contributions to several Grammy nominated projects. Joe’s performed at festivals and theaters worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, where he joined folks like Yo-Yo Ma and Mark O’Connor to help celebrate Stephane Grappelli’s 80th birthday concert.

Bill Griffin Friday (w/Keale) – Revival Tent – 4:30 pm Saturday (Kate Wolf story swap in the round) – Utahpia Stage – 4:50 pm Sunday (Kate Wolf song set) – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 11:20 am Bill Griffin is widely known as a musician in both bluegrass and Hawaiian music genres. A luthier and veteran mandolinist, he is also the inventor of the “mandolele”, which is a nylon-stringed mandolin that he first crafted in 1986. He began playing ukulele at age five, guitar soon thereafter, and mandolin at age nineteen. Bill also plays piano and bass. As a member of the Cache Valley Drifters, formed in 1972, Bill met Kate Wolf in 1974, and the professional collaborations began when she used the Cache Valley Drifters as her backup band on her 1977 release “Lines on the Paper.” Afterward, Griffin worked with Wolf independently as producer and arranger on several of her albums, including “Poet’s Heart” which won an award in 1986 for folk album of the year from NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors).

Bootleg Honeys Thursday – Revival Tent – 8:20 pm Friday – Utahpia Stage – 3:10 pm Sunday (Kate Wolf song set) – Red Tail Hawk Stage – 11:20 am “Fresh original songs delivered with angelic harmonies” – Jim Corbett “Mr. Music” The Bootleg Honeys are a trio of women raised in the rich tradition of the Sonoma County live Americana roots music scene. With an undeniable chemistry, and appreciation for songwriting and music making, The Bootleg Honeys are bound to make you smile, stomp your feet and leave you wanting more!

More Performers Teresa Tudury Saturday – Utahpia Stage – 3:10 pm Sunday (w/Eric Schwartz) – Revival Tent – 3:55pm “It’s not clear yet whether singer/comedienne Teresa Tudury is another Tracey Ullman, a new Sophie Tucker or a revitalized Bea Lillie. Her utterly madcap performance…managed to include reference to all of the above—and then some… Tudury is taking risks all over the place, with none of the stiff and predictable inhibitions of a too-established performer…What we’re talking about here, folks, is a star in the making.” – Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times Teresa Tudury started writing songs at age 12 and was performing in San Francisco nightclubs by the time she was 15. She has played on and off in the Bay Area for years, and for almost two decades was based in Los Angeles where in addition to music gigs, she wrote comedy and worked as a character actress on stage and screen. With a deep, sultry voice that magnetizes audiences, and a scathing comedic wit to match, Teresa is a consummate performer who pours out her original songs with power, verve, passion, and disarming humor. Teresa’s voice has been described as a cross between Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt (LA Weekly). Her vocal stylings are perfectly complemented by her bluesy guitar playing.

Eric Schwartz Saturday – Revival Tent – 6:40 pm Sunday (w/Teresa Tudury) – Revival Tent – 3:55 pm “Eric Schwarz is a mega-talented songwriter and player. He’s incredibly funny on the one hand and gut-wrenchingly topical on the other” – Frank Goodman, Puremusic.com “Eric Schwartz has a brilliant mind, a fabulous musical sensibility, and is not afraid to sing what other people barely allow themselves to think.” – Christine Lavin Award-winning musical satirist and songwriter Eric Schwartz has been playing music and comedy venues nationally for fifteen years (The Improv, The Comedy Store, The Bottom Line…). Schwartz is possibly the only artist in the history of the world to get raves from Gloria Steinem and Hustler Magazine, Eric’s songs go from the political to the profane, sometimes both (see the International Songwriting Competition’s best comedy song of the year, “Clinton Got A Blowjob”.). He is known as much as a kick-ass live entertainer, singer and multi-instrumentalist as a spot-on writer and recording artist, so be sure to catch him!

Ma Muse Saturday – Revival Tent – 4:10 pm Sunday – Revival Tent – 12:10 pm “...affirmational, and Earth-centered... excellent vocal blend, and, in fact, recently won a duet competition for A Prairie Home Companion” – The Juggler MaMuse: (“Ma” as in Mamma; “Muse” as in the one who inspires). With deep roots in the folk and gospel traditions, and their hearts in the present, MaMuse (Sarah Nutting and Karisha Longaker) create uplifting music for the next seven generations to thrive on. Interweaving brilliant and haunting harmony with lyrics born of honed emotional intelligence, MaMuse invokes a musical presence that inspires the opening of the heart. Playing a family of varied acoustic instruments including upright bass, guitar, mandolins, ukulele, and flutes, and backed by inspired drummer (Mike Wofchuck) these two powerful women embody a love for all of life. The synergy that is created through this musical connection is palpable and truly moving to witness.

More Performers Kevin Russell & His So-Called Friends Sunday – Arlo Stage – 12:35 pm … an incredibly talented songwriter and player. He’s grouped together a fine bunch of musician’s. I have to be honest, it’s not bluegrass, but it’s incredible country, singer-songwriter stuff. It’s great! I can back it 100%, I love it.” – Ray Edlund, KPFA Kevin Russell is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. He performs regularly in the country rock/Americana band, The Rhythm Rangers and with the bluegrass/Americana group, Under the Radar. He also performs occasionally with the classic country band, The Country Train Rex, the Americana group, Laughing Gravy and as electric guitarist in the Celtic rock band The Ruminators. In addition, he hosts Sonoma County music concerts by various touring musicians (Radney Foster, Jim Hurst, Kathy Kallick, Laurie Lewis, Mike Dowling & many others) and is the driving force behind The Sebastopol Guitar Festival, held in early February. He has appeared as a sideman on 21 local recordings by songwriters & groups, has recorded five CDs with his various bands and has five CDs out under his name. His newest project, an all acoustic bluegrass collection called Plain Dirt Fashion, came out in January 2014. He is a former DJ and writes CD reviews for the online website Freight Train Boogie. com. And, lastly, Kevin has performed as a side player for a number of local songwriters, including Michael Capella, Mark McLay, Teresa Tudury, Doug Jayne, Audrey Auld, Greg Abel, Greg Scherer & more.

Audrey Auld Sunday – Utahpia Stage – 2:45 pm Sunday – Revival Tent – 7:00 pm “Audrey is one of the most honest original artists I know.” – Fred Eaglesmith “Audrey is the real deal. I call her the Australian songbird. She has that wide-open sound & it’s easy to relate to her music because she sings from the soul.” – Jimmy LaFave Devils are not the only thing to come from Tasmania. Singer-songwriter Audrey Auld’s heart is in Country/Folk music, with a presence as big as The Outback. Her songs are the wry and poignant observations of an Aussie troubadour touring the States since 2003. Ever the fearlessly independent woman, she runs her own label Reckless Records and enjoys great success as a songwriter. Auld’s songs are recorded by Nashville stars and Carter Family descendants, are heard on the Grand Ole Opry, TV shows (Justified, The Good Guys, Longmire, NCIS New Orleans) and within the walls of San Quentin Prison where she has hosted songwriting workshops since 2006 and continues to perform for and work with incarcerated people.

Absynth Quintet Friday – Utahpia Stage – 1:30 pm Saturday – Arlo Stage – 12:45 pm “It’s not a leap to suggest that Absynth Quintet will be a big deal on the west coast string band circuit in short order.” – The Metro, Santa Cruz A bionic string band? Fire breathing traveling-gypsy-circus-indie-grass? The Absynth Quintet purvey a truly unique brand of high energy acoustic music. The band’s sound, born and cultured in the fertile hills of Humboldt County, CA, melds a reverent treatment of time honored American music with a reckless, virtuosic and often zany approach to innovation. There’s something Djangoesque, something distinctly Eastern European that saturates many of the songs, but always present is the foot-stomping influence of bluegrass roots. Absynth Quintet finds a space between street corner busking, sit down concerts at The Freight And Salvage and all night laser light shows. They tap into their diverse musical roots and tease out something fresh, original and relevant to today’s music scene. More on page 28 Back Roads Productions

More Performers Jim Corbett (Mr. Music) & the Love Choir Friday (Love Choir) – Revival Tent – 5:10 pm Saturday (Community Choir workshop) – Revival Tent – 9:45 am Sunday (Love Choir-Gospel sing-along) – Revival Tent – 9:45 am “No auditions. Everyone is welcome, just show up, sing, and let your love shine!” – lovechoir.org Jim Corbett (aka Mr. Music) is the director of the Love Choir and a guy who loves to lead sing-alongs. He has been a teacher in local elementary schools for over 25 years and also promotes local music events through the Mr. Music Foundation. Jim was recently named Citizen of the Year in Sebastopol, selected for the Aged To Perfection Award from the Sebastopol Area Senior Center, and just this month become a grandfather for the first time (Congratulations Jim!). The Love Choir came into existence in 1997 at the Sebastopol Apple Blossom Festival with a handful of friends who love to sing, and who sing for the love of music.

Willits Brass Friday – Back of the Music Meadow – 12:00 pm Having over 100 years of combined brass playing, The Willits Brass was formed in 2009 by four brass players who raised money for the Willits and Laytonville Christmas Toy Drives. They still continue to raise money for charity, while all contributing locally to helping others further their musical education and endeavors. The “Father Figure” of the band is Jim Church. Having served in the Army for over 21 years, Jim played trombone for several US Army bands, traveling the world while playing for Kings, Queens and Presidents. Dan Church brings his talented baritone music to the band, and Tom Allman contributes with his 30+ years on the tuba (and is a highly respected administrator for a Public Safety agency in Mendocino County). Edwardo Brino, on trumpet, has been with the band for almost two years, while Sheryl Gard, French Horn, brings sanity to the group with her talent, humor and musical understanding.

Brendan Phillips Thursday – Utahpia Stage – 7:35 pm “Music and movement building go hand in hand… If we can’t sing together, how can we win together?” – Brendan Phillips Brendan Phillips, son of Utah Phillips, has performed a number of times at the festival over the past several years, his performance taking a different form each time. In 2012, his band Fast Rattler put a new spin on some of Utah’s classics, including some his father had never recorded or performed. In 2013, he teamed up with a number of Utah’s old hobo brethren to form “The Caterwaulin’ Caravan”. Brendan returns this year after a 2-year break from touring that saw him shifting gears to get his master’s degree in social work. For Brendan, social work was a natural fit for a deeper exploration of the themes of social justice and struggle that run through his father’s music and the music of countless peoples’ movements the world over. Rooted in the spirit of collaboration, Brendan will be joined by Joe Stevens (Coyote Grace) and Drew De Man (Fast Rattler, Pretend Sweethearts)

Uncle Wiggly Friday – Utahpia Stage – 9:10 pm • Saturday – Revival Tent – 9:45 pm Uncle Wiggly, unleashing their ferocious dance grooves, poignant lyricism, and engaging banter, has been playing blues, shuffles, boogies and funk for Sonoma County crowds for decades. These rascally best friends mix their quirky originals with covers of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, and David Lindley. But whatever they play, it’s always a riotous party. They are Brendan Smith—ripping his transcendent guitar solos, John Heide—dishing out his chunky rhythm guitar parts, Jeff Forehan—playing drum grooves with verve and singing like an R&B angel, Tom Padrick—singing soulful vocals and sweet harmonies, Blair Hardman—funking around on the electric bass. . November 6–8, 2015 Coffis Brothers Friday – Utahpia Stage – 4:50 pm Saturday – Arlo Stage – 8:35 pm “The Coffis Brothers mix a blend of folk, country and rock with the intensity of personal lyrics into a gritty and often tender harmony of sound…a show that delivers one part Avett Brothers and one part early Neil Young for a full night of dancing and fun.” – Santa Cruz Weekly The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men are a rootsy rock n’ roll band born and raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains (Ben Lomond, a small city south of San Jose that can be described as the opposite of urban). The band formed in 2010, and their first self-titled release came out in June 2011. Every bit as influential as their early surroundings, songwriters Jamie and Kellen Coffis’ blend of folk, blues, R&B and straight ahead rock are evidence of an upbringing spent listening to all of the right records from Tom Petty, Neil Young, and The Beatles. They are joined in the band by Kyle Poppen on lead guitar, Aidan Collins on bass and Henry Chadwick on drums
