Vision Personally, I am really fascinated by old historical buildings. They are always full of memories and have strong atmosphere as their character. Nowadays, those forgotten spaces are facing cruel fact either keep poetical abandoned or be taken down all over the world. Can we do something for these elders by change the function of it used to be and give them a new life? Furthermore maybe it helps a bit with land conservation and the reduction of urban sprawl or even the issue of sustainability?

Reference Still, some successful cases have preserved the old buildings and create fantastic dialogues with space and materials between old and new. Castelvecchio / Carlo Scarpa Scarpa’s Castelvecchio is the most inspiring example of preservation I’ve seen; where complex layers of ancient and recent history are both independent and dependent at the same time – it’s tectonic brilliance.

Reference Hamar Museum / Sverre Fehn “My most important journey was perhaps into the past, in the confrontation with the Middle Age, when I built a museum among the ruins of the Bishops’ Fortress at Hamar. I realized, when working out this project, that only by manifestation of the present, you can make the past speak. If you try to run after it, you will never reach it.” Every Man is an Architect 1997 Pritzker Prize Acceptance Speech Sverre Fehn

Reference Splitting / Gordon Matta-Clark What the cutting’s done is to make the space more articulated, but the identity of the building as a space, as an object, is strongly preserved, enhanced. I’ve often thought that a more interesting approach to the labyrinth is as a kind of ritualistic procession, rather than as a path must have been very understandable; it was almost like a calendar, a way of measuring. Light Light can easily change ones mood or the atmosphere in a space and it’s always dynamic. We found some dramatic light slightly comes into the barn, but with what volume or quality of light do we need as a place for retreat? Should it be a sacred light or a light full of joy and hope?

Structure “No matter how good an architect you are, if you have no chance of expressing your poetic idea in structures, you lack the very foundation of architecture. The structure is a language, a way of expressing yourself, and there should be a balance between thought and language. Every story has a construction. Sverre Fehn: The Pattern of Thoughts

Materials & colors When the subject of barns comes up, the word “Honesty is never that far behind. The word is used to refer to the simplicity and lack of pretension in barn building, but also to the method of construction and materials. More than most of its contemporaries, the barn wears its heart on its sleeve. With its exposed and naked structure, a barn readily reveals its sturdy nature, organic character and intuitive design to anyone who cares to listen to the stories told by timber, stone and flint. Culture Barns are proving a haven for an increasing number of city dwellers fleeing the demands of urban life and taking to the country; Barn conversions have become second or vacation homes to many who own lofts or converted houses in cities, or they have been taken up as primary homes by an increasing number of people who have tired of the rat race altogether, cashed in on their valuable city property and “downshifted to simplify and destress their lives with a calmer, countryside existence. Theory Daoism A central theme of the Daodejing is that correlatives are the expressions of the movement of dao.Correlatives in Chinese philosophy are not opposites, mutually excluding each other. They represent the ebb and fl ow of the forces of reality: yin/yang, male/female; excess/defect; leading/following; active/passive. As one approaches the fullness of yin, yang begins to horizon and emerge.

02 Context
Theory Daoism Some of the concept from Daoism could be related to almost everything even in architecture design. There are some interesting discussions between "Less is more" from Mies Van Der Rohe and “ 有無 相生 ” from Daoism. An often cited metaphor for naturalness is pu ( 樸 "uncut wood"), the "uncarved block", which represents the "original nature... prior to the imprint of culture" of an individual. It is usually referred to as a state one returns to.

04 Project Framing
78m
I will focus on the study of “Adaptive Reuse which includes what kind of new program will be put in these old specific spaces (strategy), the original spirit of the space, atmosphere, light and materials; How to preserve the barn and bring new life at this space.

Barn Plan / Zinck Architect
05 Method
Master plan is always an important role in architecture design especially for this barn transformation. I will study on different type of innovations and use this knowledge as a base for my thesis in the same time. Study the old and new space by sketch models, diagrammatic sketches and section drawings. Collage will be a good way to study for the materials and scenario. I will use 1/20 section drawing and 1/50 section model to explain the materiality and details of how the adaptive reuse works.
Castelvecchio Sketch / Carlo Scarpa
06 Specification
The living conditions are the main task of this project such as insulation, sewer, light and ventilation etc. It will be a challenge of converting a barn into a place with accommodations. This retreat house will consisted by physical facilities and spiritual programs.
