Inner-tube - Library

Page 1

Intertube-Library The project explores the spaces that are created by intersecting cones within the overall building volume (A 256’ x256’ x 64’ box). Each cone is angled and tapers from one end to the other end, extending from envelope to envelope. Therefore, as a result, diversities of space are created on both interior and exterior of the cones. While walking inside of the cones, people may be interrupted by other intersecting cones, bringing the distinction between inside and outside.

The site is curved by a simple diagonal cutting, which slops shallowly down to the edge, with only one side supporting the whole mass. The main entrance is placed at the bottom of the building, with a spacious tunnel connecting to the roof. The form of the site is designed based on the openings of the first floor to minimize the transition from exterior to the interior, so that the building and landscape intergrate to each other both in form and circulation.

The building is supported by steel structure. Using the center cone as the perimeter of the core of the structure, each floor has 12 beams radiating from the center. Two of the cones are extended onto the site, which can be used as structural legs as circulation path. The program is distributed based on the form of the interior space. Open programs are located with double height area and closed programs are located near the center area. The intersecting cones provide an efficient circulation space while these more vertical ones perform as open public area such as garden. Taking the advantage of the tilted surfaces of cones, auditorium and sitting area are placed on the top of a slanting cone. Stacks surround the perimeter of intersection of cones and floor plates, and provide close studying area between shelves. The envelope portraits the interaction of the cones with the envelope.
