GTV 9 Studio Design

Individual Work, 2016 Autumn

GTV 9 Studio project focuses on collective economy. The idea of Cohousing is considered in this project. Apart from that, in desigh scheme, the Relationship with Surrounding Richmond Context, the Response to GTV 9 Buildiing and the Relationship with Melbourne City will be taken into consideration as well. Concept is from visual continuity. Several important view lines to GTV 9 courtyard and to CBD are continued. These view lines subdivide the site, forming the basic pattern. Based on the subdivided pattern, refined shape guaranteed each building could stand out of the shadow as much as possible. A big park for Richmond is another intention. The undulating ground floor roof is transformed into a big public space giving people multiple experience and providing Richmond diverse street landscape.

Apartments Part

Based on the subdivided pattern, extrude the basic volumn according the height limit of the site. And, refine the shap in order to guarantee each building could stand out of the shadow as much as possible. Then, fillet the corner to get rid of the “Dark Corner and make facade more integrate, making buildings look soft and friendly to the surrounding.

Ground Floor Part

A big park for Richmond is another intention. I lift the ground floor and make it totally open for people. The basic pattern is pushed down to form several shortcuts for people to enter the site or just walk through the site. Also, the undulating ground floor roof is transformed into a big public space giving people multiple experience and providing Richmond diverse street landscape.

Lift the apartment making ground floor roof park totally open to public. Traffic cores are located in the middle of each building. According to the position of the ttraffic core, the ground is subdivided more to offer more acesses and laneways for the site, giving people a similar experience of walking in the surrounding Richmond laneways.

This buidling intends to create a space to upgrade St Kilda leisure facility. Connection and Continuity are the main concept. This landscape building is like a bridge connecting surrounding environment. The accessible Roof creates high quality public space for people to enjoy St Kilda. Interior space is another focus in this design. The internal is also folding palce which gives people a same experience with outside folding ramp. In this building, plan is continuity with out classical hierarchy, make the space more interesting and attract more people come in. The plan is divided by curve, providing human movement a organic way instead of linear way. Green element is another point in this design. Emotional Transformation

Justice-?-Society

Light penetrates Water Water and Light are fair to everyboby. Just like justice, water change its “color” according to “people” who are involved in it rather than other “people”. Also, light is absolutely equal to everybody. Water and light have no regular shape, their dynamic and liberal nature represents liberation. Water and light are transparent and pure. Light is eternal and intangible. Water is pure and clear. Apart from these, Green is another element in my design. I intend to improve people's Emotion in courthouse.

Justice

Justice comes from the society and is based on the society. Just like the black square, justice regulate the society to guarantee its order. On the other hand, justice protect people’s rights from infringements and provide help to the disadvantaged.

Design Analysis

A, C: Entrance for Public B: Entrance for Staff, Judge and Jury

Car Parking: As a connection between policstation and courthouse

According to sunshine analysis, north is the best orientation for building here

The side near river has the best review, so main function are on this side, particularly public area

The other side is heritage garden, so the another part is be put on the southern side. Between the two wings, there is a courtyard for natural light. Main entrance for public is on the west of the building.

Openning a entrance not only is convenient for people from perestrain path along the river, but also make the building open to the water view.

1: Entrance for Public: For people driving car and southern street. 2: Entrance for Pubilc: For people from waterway path. A, B, C Courtyards: Outside in and for natural light and Ventilation.

View lines cross the building. Outside in and continue outside environment. Also, People inside can appreciate outside scenery.

The courtyard inside courthouse picks up the water element of the river on the north and the green element of heritage garden on the south. Acturally, the courthouse continues the surrounding environment instead of blocking this area.

Master Plan

The grass roof makes the building integrate with the surrounding perfectly instead of changing the existing Australian style landscape.

The scheme of this courthouse is to improve people's emotion in courthouse, so "soft" materials like timber and glass are the main materials in the building, which giving peole feelings of relaxation and welcoming and relieving pressure and upset. Apart form that, there are some enveriment-friendly measures such like Water Recycling, Natural Vetilation and light, Solar Panel, Double Glass and Grass Roof etc.

Movement in Urban & Architecture

Two-Person Teamwork, 2016 Spring Competition: UIA-HYP CUP 2016 International Student Competition Award: Finalist It is very common in most cities that there is an area which was gorgeous and renowned during a period and now has been gradually degraded. Our site is chosen in this kind of area of Qingdao City — Zhongshan Road Area. This phenomenon is derived from various factors. Among these factors, the movement of people in urban scale plays a significant role. The movement in urban and in architecture are inseparable, so we intend to record and reflect the people’s movement in urban scale in architecture. We try to recover the glorious of Zhongshan Road through our project.

Qingdao Zhanqiao Pier

Qingdao Railway Station

Qingdao Railway Station is an import bridge connecting Qingdao and outside world, and Qingdao Pier is the name card of Qingdao City showing the welcome to the world. The site is in the middle of Qingdao Railway Station and Qingdao Pier, should being a strong bond of Qingdao and World. 1.The site is desighed to be an open lawn. 30m x 60m x 60m box is located in the middle of this site, and 8.1m x 8.1m column grid is fitted in it. The ground floor is open and only have a cafe, which not only make people get the building from anywhere, but also make people free to walk through the site. 2.Main circulation cater for the pedestrian from Qingdao Rail Station and Qingdao Pier. The main functions are arranged along this red circulation. 3.Four libraries with four different themes (Zhongshan Road, Signal Hill, Qingdao Pier and Surrounding Urban) are arranged along circulation path according to the positions of the four attractions. In libraries, people could get visual connection with the four attractions. Also, there is a cafe with sea view in the middle. 4.More dynamic in vertical direction. Get rid of hierarchy in vertical. Building rises up from the ground and decend down to the ground gradually, giving people an experience of continual movement without pause. This “Climbing” experience makes this building more like a vertical public park. It is open 24 hours, people could go there even just for a walk. 5.Building is shaped a mountain landscape, providing local people a public with unique experience. Additionly, below parts of four library buildings, column grid is sudivided into smaller scale column grid (2.7m x 2.7m), making sure could support the building above. Moreover, the concept of these libraries are from people’s movement extracted from these four attractions.

Site Analysis

Solar and Shadow Analysis According to the analysis of heliometric intensity in a year, we noticed that the southeast of building is always experiencing nondirect irradiation, and the northeast and northwest side are always under direct irradiation, so we intend use different colours to defend the excessive irradiation and use clear glass to gain sufficent sunlight.

Mass Developing Progress

Initial Height Restriction Proximity to Essendon Airport limits site OLS to 228.5m in height.

Envelope Footing Restriction Metro Train ‘city loop’ passes below the site, so set back to obstruct or impact the Metro Train operation.

Basic Volume The hight is around 220 meters, closing to Little Lonsdale ST. The orientaion maximums the view to CBD and Carlton Garden.

Catering Wind Reducing the wind effect and generating fresh air to ground. Also, creating iconic image for this area.

Lobby The Lobby faces to the main streets. Easy access and giving people a feeling of Welcome.

Sky Gardens Two sky gardens face to CBD and Carlton Garden.

Design Brief In order to optimise the interaction with the public space especially green space on the east and courtyard on the south, we open a new opening entry on the south facade in the in the basis of remaining the origianl main entry. Also, the east side space close to the south lawn is extended to get more outdoor space by doing balcony. The facade system must be able to adapt to cyclical and seasonal climate specific condition. The issues facade intend to address is mitigating the the damage of solar heat and providing shading and natural vetilation.

The NGV Rorschach Pavilion Teamwork, 2016 March-April Competition: NGV's 2016 Achitecture Commission Award: Final Five

The NGV Rorschach Pavilion Design Brief

The NGV Rorschach Pavilion aims to explore cross-disciplinary ideas relevant to both architecture and art within the public realm. The pavilion is based on the Rorchach inkblot principle derived from drips of paint. The process for creating the form was inspired by the inkblot test invented by Hermann Rorschach 100 years ago, in Russia, around the same time that Kandinsky and Malevich were making the first abstract paintings. The process for the design of the pavilion involved dripping paint onto a surface, tracing the drips in Auto CAD, slicing the edge off, mirroring the dripsurface to create a Rorschah effect and folding the surface around to create a self-supporting space.
