Material and durability are the priority in terms of effectively maintain both high quality of craft and good balance of weight caused by the relatively large driver in the speakers. Based on that, we came up with the aluminum+leather combination in the final design.

“...once you open the case you can’t help but be impressed with the overall style of these headphones, they are certainly unique with a hint of Abyss about them, once on they sit quite snug and are very comfortable...” -hifilounge.tumblr.com

Trend of color Materials Hinge mechanisms

More than 30 kinds of headphones from over 10 main-stream brands that were being sold on the United States and Asia’s markets had been researched and tested based on the 3 focuses we came up for our headphone.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

CONCEPT REFINEMENT Emphasis was given primarily to balance the exterior design of the headphone and focusing customers on the sophisticated technology and sound quality. Ease of use was identified as one the top elements to customers, and that goes heavily to the hinge as the mostly used parts.

problem statement

With extensive market research and interview with kitchen-faucet sales representatives and users, the top 3 problems existing in current kitchen faucets are their:

IMMOVABILITY IN A VERTICAL MANNER

INCAPABILITY TO OPERATE WITH HANDS OCCUPIED

INEFFICIENCY FOR GROUP USE

Brainstorm & ideation

Based on the three problems identified for current kitchen faucets, the ideation process was focused on user experience, form, and materials.

categorized exploration

Attention was given primarily to balance the priorities identified for mobility, simple operation and efficiency. Cylindrical shape was picked for what mentioned above and manufacturing cost.

Electronic Waste Possible Solution

THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF FORESIGHT

Research Background E-WASTE & TECHNOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR

• Collaborated between School of Material Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and College of Liberal Arts • Margo Katherine Wilke Undergraduate Research Program • Purdue University-West Lafayette

“Consumer electronics are increasingly treated as disposable items. Companies create this consumer climate by constantly marketing new technologies, rendering fairly recent products obsolete. In 1999 the average lifespan of a computer in the United States was 4 to 6 years. In 2005 the lifespan had dropped to less than 2 years. (National Safety Council, 2006) Personal computers contain toxic heavy metals such as barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc, nickel and lead (Yadong et al., 2006). All of these materials are regulated by the EPA. According to the study on heavy metal content of personal computers by Yadong and colleagues, each of these elements occur in concentrations higher than the federally regulated levels. The steadily growing stream of electronic waste poses a threat to human health and environmental integrity.” — Cited from University of Michigan Website, http://sitemaker.umich.edu/section002group3/e-waste

Essence of e-waste

3R Principle Reduce Recycle Reuse

1 2

By identifying the 3 processes in producing, disposing and recycling e-wastes, the well-known “3R Principle was adapted to clearly identify the main purpose of each phase.

3

2

2

1

Cycle. Ideal manufacturing and consuming process. Used products go back as manufacturing raw materials after being consumed.

2

One-way process. E-waste from products discarded by the users will contaminate or even destroy the environment.

3

3

Cycle. Used products can return to the users after being recycled or re-manufactured to extend their lifespan.

Technological Inspiration

“Cloud” computation Reduce · Recycle · Reuse

Ventilation Reduce · Recycle · Reuse

Data center modules/methods Reduce · Recycle · Reuse

For Siri on iPhone as an example, it can not be used without internet or signal connection. The essence is away-from-device computation on the “mother” computer, which turn the user’s devices themselves into “display” devices. And the implementation of this technology will REDUCE the computational burden which determines the physical volume of the “children” devices.

Good ventilation is the key to conducting smooth mass computation. For civilian computational devices we have now, the ventilation method decides the constructional design. With innovative ventilation method possibly applied, the structural design of the computational devices we have now could be modified in a good way in terms of REDUCED size, more computational power, and better way of REUSING REUSE-ABLE parts like hard drives.

Modules are very typical data center components. Being constructed in a replaceable manner, storage units like hard-drives and computing units like processors can be added easily for better-performance purpose. This essentially prolong the life-span of these most important parts and prevent them from being shredded with the discarded computational devices. Module structure can REDUCE the amount of waste and RECYCLE REUSE-ABLE parts.

Research process

on-site Investigation

Purdue Surplus and Recycling Center

As one of the leading schools in dealing with electronic wastes, Purdue is ahead of many institutions working on better ways of recycling E-waste. However, as for the consideration of information security, almost all of the hard drives leaving the campus are shredded which is a waste of materials and time. By the way, for all the parts taken off becoming E-waste, Purdue cannot really guarantee their ultimate destination although they try to keep track of them.

Technological Experiment With experiment conducted, it is proved that “mini-cloud” technology is feasible to build in small scale. The real meaning behind it is the potential capability in linking all the digital devices at home into a network that processes all the information in the “central station” and turning less powerful devices into displays which can still function in the same processing level.

Design Concepts

Concepts Refinement

Instead of showing the who functionality aspect of this proposed concept. The 9 concepts were refined to the final cylindrical-“workstation” idea based on the consideration towards: 1. “Satellite” layout of family-level cloud 2. Flexible storage 3. More efficient ventilation

Models & Features

With realistic technologies backing up, the computer workstations can be connected and operated wirelessly which means that we do not need powerful CPUs connected with every monitor we are working with. All the data will be stored and processed on the “Central Station”, and displayed on the wirelessly connected desktop monitors, tablets, etc. This small-scale “minicloud” concept will effectively change the physical/ data structure of our current computers and expand the lifespan of our current digital devices.

Almost three years after this foresight/design, Apple launched its new Mac Pro which used exactly the same ideas I proposed as my thesis design following my research for current computational devices. Till now the profound meaning of this project is not only lying in its testified value being a foresight/design, but also in the sense that it reminds me how important it is to come up with solid designs with a critical mind and an eye always looking for the change.

prototype Three crucial things to look at: User’s demeanor was analyzed for signs of hardship; Screen was recorded to see where participants might be experiencing difficulty; Time was recorded to show obvious improvement in efficiency and effectiveness. In order to do these tasks: A screen capture software was downloaded onto the iPad; The participants was timed with a stopwatch app; The participant’s facial expression was watched while he completed the tasks. Participants: Visitors in the University Health Center. *, **

* The screen of the old system was not record as people were actually putting in their own personal and health data. **The participants was asked not to put in their own personal data on ours but rather requested that they make up data because we did not want them to have to share personal data with us.
