The Sun Moon Lake You Need to Know W

Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area

S

E

Sun Moon Lake lies 748 meters above sea level, nestled amid the verdant mountains of Nantou County in the center of Taiwan. The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area covers 116 square kilometers and the lake is the island’s largest; separated by Lalu Island in the middle, its southern side is shaped like the crescent moon, its northern portion like the round sun, giving it the name Sun Moon Lake.

The area of the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area was expanded at the end of 2011 to take in neighboring scenic spots like Jiji, Puli, and Xinyi and enrich the lake experience. On a visit you can now take in scenes of the mountain lake and gently flowing streams, listen to bird and insect concerts and enchanting songs of indigenous tribes, smell the elegant aromas of coffee and tea, savor the flavors of lake produce and local delicacies, and make your own pottery masterpieces.

People of the Thao tribe are the original inhabitants of Sun Moon Lake. According to legend, they discovered the lake while chasing a white stag; the stag jumped into the water and swam to Lalu Island, where the braves captured and killed it. They threw the deer’s internal organs into the lake; this attracted large schools of fish, which the tribesmen caught and found to be delicious. Later on, they returned home and brought their entire tribe back to settle on the lakeshore.

Construction on the first power station at Sun Moon Lake began in 1934. A dam was built at Wujie to divert water from the Zhuoshui River into a tunnel that emptied into the lake; after being used to generate electricity, the water was then sent back into the Shuili River, a tributary of the Zhoushui. The Jiji Branch Railway Line was built to transport construction materials. The additional water raised the level of the lake and expanded its area from 4.55 to 7.73 square kilometers. 5

Hanbilou (Han Bi Lo) Memorial Hall

This site was once the sentry post for Chiang Kai-shek’s bodyguard.

This Greek-style church, built in 1971, is where Chiang Kai-shek and Madame Chiang worshipped when they vacationed in Sun Moon Lake.

This hall takes you into the past, to Chiang Kai-shek’s vacation home. Writing and handprints of famous people adorn the wall.

Sun Moon Lake is a honeymoon destination, popular with young lovers. The Old Man Under the Moon—the Matchmaker God— has been drawing hopeful young singles here for over 30 years.

The entrance is a wooden gate on the left side of Shuishe Pier, and the entire trail runs through Zhaowu Pier to Jiulongkou on an elevated boardwalk with numerous observation decks. Perfect for whole families.

The first pier you see when you travel to the lake from Yuchi. This is where the Swimming Carnival is held, and is a good place to watch the sunrise and sunset.

President’s Fish

Three Treasures of the Lake Sun Moon Lake offers delicious foods along with its beautiful scenery. The local Thao tribespeople long ago liked to catch the sharpbelly fish and lake shrimp, which they deep-fried and ate. The third treasure is the president’s fish, or topmouth culter.

The Thao believe this is the dwelling place of their ancestral spirits. The ancestral spirit baskets kept by the tribe’s female shamans are called wulalaluwan, the lalu part giving the island its name. It can be reached only by boat, and going ashore is not allowed.

This plain Tang-style temple contains a relic of the monk Xuanzang, and from in front you have a fine view of Lalu Island. Two stone inscriptions, meaning “Sun Moon Lake” and “Xuanguang Temple,” are favorite backdrops for tourist photos.

This museum provides introductions to Thao tribal culture and the production of millet wine, and displays artifacts from the old farming days.

The site of the old Thao village of Shiyin, now where the Shi clan worships its ancestors, the trail is based on the theme of the owl, the Thao’s “mascot.” It ends at Taiwan’s smallest, highest lighthouse.

Butterfly Garden was closed for years because of earthquake damage, but has now reopened. Its nearly one-hectare area includes a forest trail and a net house where you can observe butterfly behavior.

Plain but Not Simple Selected ingredients produce an irresistible flavor. In the pavilion on the steps to Xuanguang Temple is a famous vendor of tea-boiled eggs. A-ma has been selling eggs here for more than 50 years, and is still going strong. Born and raised on the banks of Sun Moon Lake, Zou Jin-pen received, in 1960, what is said to have been the only vendor’s license at the lake then. Her husband was a boatman on the lake; and since boatmen were sometimes to busy to eat, she was inspired to boil and sell eggs that they could consume easily and quickly. She and her eggs, boiled with Assam tea, Puli mushrooms, and special spices, have become a legend at the lake.

Shuiwatou Trail

This diversified park offers all kinds of activities and performances, along with a romantic Night Cherry Blossom Festival.

This is a boardwalk over the lake, with a many-frog sculpture at its end that serves as a tool for measuring the water level.

Wenwu Temple

Mt. Neihu Trail

This large yellow-tiled, crimsoncolumned temple is backed by a scenic forest park. Its architecture combines northern and southern styles; its workmanship is meticulous, and its carvings exquisite.

This trail runs along a valley with a rich ecology. In spring and early summer fireflies fill the area with constellations of dancing lights.

Round-the-Lake System ‧ Wenwu-Formosan Aboriginal Culture Center Ropeway Area

The Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village is a theme park for the whole family, with amusement rides, aborigine song-anddance performances, a Cherry Festival—and access to Sun Moon Lake via the ropeway or Jintian Lane.

Bamboo Stone Garden This was once a bamboo specimen garden; now it has all kinds of bamboo, and construction using local pebbles has developed it into a fresh, natural area with environmental education and interpreter training functions.

Steps of the Year Trail

Songbolun Trail

Also known as “Steps to Heaven,” these stone steps are carved with the birthdates of famous men and the 24 solar terms of China. The railing beside the steps are filled with “prayer cards” hung by visitors.

This was once a major trail for salt transport, and near the lake it has a sculpture of salt bearers. Along the trail you will see endemic plants and bird and insect ecologies; and, on the lake, floating fields and fishing boats.

Dalin Cymbidium Tourist Farm

GuGu Farms

Dazhuhu Trail

This short trail, just 180 meters long, takes you to the famous Sun Moon Spring. It is known especially for its sunset views, with the light reflecting off the ripples.

Mushroom Know-how Don’t shiitake mushrooms grow in wood?

This farm, covering more than 6,600 square meters, has orchids valued from 10 to several million NT dollars: cymbidum orchids, dendrobium orchids, and dancing-doll orchids, among others.

This establishment strives to develop mushroom tourism. Besides growing mushrooms it offers free mushroom ecology tours and DIY mushroom picking, teaches how to tell good mushrooms from bad, and serves up mushroom meals.

Yes, they were once planted largely in wood, but now they are mostly grown in bags. Are shiitakes the only mushrooms grown in bags? No. If you want shiitakes, then plant shiitake culture; if you want golden oyster mushrooms, plant golden oyster culture.

Stone Guanyin

Luliaokeng Community

This tourist winery sells mainly plum wine products along with other distinctive local items. It also offers leisure experience and guided group tour activities.

Located on Township Road 131 on the way to Yuchi. In summer, Shuili River attracts crowds to barbecue and play in the water beside the temple. The Stone Guanyin in the cave at Jixian Temple is known for its spiritual efficacy.

Xinxing Village, or Luliaokeng (“Deer Shed Hollow), is a Hakka settlement. Forty or 50 years ago sambar deer came in large numbers to drink at the riverside, and even today the village has more deer than people. The lovely Xinxing Primary School has won prizes for environmental excellence and sustainability.

A Fun Community When you come to this community, you should spend an entire day experiencing the ecology and the rural atmosphere.

Butterfly Banquet We are not talking about eating butterflies, but about using the non-toxic, healthy nectar plants and food plants that butterflies and their larvae dine on to create innovative “butterfly cuisine” banquets.

Farm Experience Farming at Taomi concentrates on water oats, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, ginger, radishes, ornamental plants, and jewel orchids. Tourists are offered all kinds of farming experiences. The area is also known for handicrafts such as sculpting frogs and making cloth frogs.

Do you know what I am? The soursop exudes a rich pineapple aroma. Eat it like a sugar apple, or add ice and blend it into juice, or enjoy it together with apples, bananas, and pears. It can also be made into ice cream.

The second-generation curator, Yu Ching-kin, took over from his father after Taiwan was restored to Chinese administration after World War II. Now the fourth generation curator looks back and sees how mud paths have become paved roads, forests have been transformed into fruit orchards, streams have been washed out into wide riverbeds, and butterflies have disappeared. He wants to bring them back. The first floor of the museum has live insects to observe, while the second floor contains more than 16,000 insect specimens from all over the world. 66

The Exquisite Aromas of Tea and Coffee Puli System ‧ Lugao-Seshui Tea and Kiln Area

Lugao has been known as “Tea Fragrance Lane” since Japanese times; in addition to black tea, this settlement now offers coffee. Seshui too offers black tea, along with the Baixian clay that has made it a “pottery community.”

Hugo Assam Tea Farm

Seshui Kiln

Following the teaprocessing techniques of the Japanese, Hugo Assam Tea Farm holds black tea experience activities from April through December. It sells tea, too.

Seshui produces fine Baixian clay, which has made it famous in the pottery industry. Besides the kiln, here you will find art displays and landscape facilities.

Owl Home

Bamboo Charcoal Village

The use of natural materials to create owls, and wood carving and painting along with black tea processing DIY, make this a good place for young and old to demonstrate their creativity.

This establishment uses moso bamboo to make highquality charcoal cups with a process that leaves the original bamboo tubes, branches, and joints intact.

Legend Coffee

Mt. Jinlong

Grows organic coffee without agricultural chemicals. Coffeerelated tours are offered—indepth tours, that might last a whole day.

Enjoy sunrise over a sea of clouds, or the village nightscape. This is one of Taiwan’s three top spots for photographing the low-altitude sunrise and sea of clouds.

73

Lugao-Seshui Tea and Kiln Area

Seshui Community

Surrounded by mountains and with valleys, waterfalls, trails lined with towering trees, and winding wooden bridge, dawn and dusk here present a multitude of moods. The basin is bisected by Seshui and Taomi creeks, producing the high humidity that favors the production of black tea and ornamental plants.

WARNING For further information, contact: 。Seshui Community Development Association 。No.31-6, Dayan Ln., Yuchi Township, Nantou County 555, Taiwan (R.O.C.) 。049-2896051 。NOTICE: Some trails are dangerous, and can be entered only by arrangement with professional guides.

74

Lugao Community

The “Tea Fragrance Lane” in this mountain-surrounded community is actually a long highway; a tea processing plant was located here in Japanese times, and today you can see tea farm signs all along the road. So stop and have a cup, and experience the warmth of the farmrs. Tianding Trail From this trail you can look down on Seshui Community. It ends at the seven-meter Hongse Waterfall.

Shuishang Forest Trail Built next to a stream, this trail at first runs through tea farms before entering into the deep forest and ending at the Shuishang Deck.

Changliaowei Community

Following the destruction of the Sept. 21, 1999 earthquake, Changliaowei chose the goddess Mazu from its Changxing Temple as its design image. Low walls with green glaze decorations bring added attractiveness to the area. Wujimulin Trail Connect from the Tianding Trail; ends at the Wujimilin Waterfall.

Chaikanping Trail The trail ends at Mystery Valley and retains its natural appearance, with a flourishing growth of ferns.

Qishi Zuanji Temple

Qin-shou Kiln

Taiwan Adventist College

Established in 1897 and surrounded by bird songs and floral aromas all year, this is the only temple in Taiwan devoted to the worship of Zhuge Liang, a famous strategist of the Three Kingdoms period. People suffering difficult circumstances or troubled minds come here for guidance.

Following the Sept. 21, 1999 earthquake, the kiln collected up its shattered pottery pieces and gave them new life as a different kind of creative art. Today the kiln’s pottery classroom, building, and pavilion have all been fashioned by the operator’s own hands (qin shou).

Often taken as a nature park, the Adventist College campus covers more than 50 hectares. A “green tunnel” runs beside the expansive lawn, where sunlight filtering through the foliage creates a romantic scene. Pop shows are often shot here.

Puli System ‧ Lugao-Seshui Tea and Kiln Area

Visiting the Homeland of Black Tea Black tea was an important product of Seshui and Lugao communities at an early age, especially in the Japanese occupation period. With the passage of time the environment was found suitable for growing coffee as well as tea.

Gaining International Renown The Shuijingkuang coffee of Yuchi took second prize at an international coffee competition, drawing widespread attention—even from Erna Knutsen, known as the godmother of specialty coffee. The large gap between day and night temperatures in Yuchi nourishes rich farm yields; the area planted in coffee here is not large, but the quality of the coffee surprises even foreign specialists. Shuijingkuang coffee is said to have flavors of black chocolate as well as coffee, giving it a heavenly taste. It is named Shuijingkuang— “Crystal Mine”—coffee because the coffee farm is located at the foot of Great Mt. Longquan Railway Station (Ershui)

Running between Mingjian Township and Jiji Town, this 4.5-kilometer tunnel is comprised of camphor trees that were planted in 1940. Their dense branches cover the highway and the little train chugs along beside, adding to the poetic atmosphere. Newlyweds, especially, like to have their photos taken here. This is a great place for bicycle riding, too.

This station was built in 1922 and has only one old platform, managed by Ershui Station. Behind the waiting-room chairs is a pottery wall, and the columns holding up the awning are also decorated with pottery shards from the kilns along the Jiji Line.

Jiji Weir and Water Resource Hall

The entrance to the trail is situated beside the Jiji Weir and marked with a “Kai Pi Hong Huang”—“Open up the vast wasteland”—inscription. The trail consists of 650 steps, rising about 130 meters. From the rest platform along the way you can see the ruins of a military tunnel; and the higher you go, the better the view.

This weir is Taiwan’s largest work for adjusting water resources, presenting an impressive sight as it crosses the Zhuoshui River. The Water Resource Hall on one side presents a record of the 10-year project and of the development of the island’s water resources.

When the Japanese occupied Taiwan they instituted a camphor monopoly, and set up the Jiji Camphor Agency here in 1898 to handle camphor production and sales. The Agency will be developed into a “cultural industry park.”

This museum is founded on a passion for history and a love of bananas, exhibiting historical banana-growing tools and artefacts.

The waterfall plunges off a cliff over 30 meters high, and its trail is lined with cherry trees.

Endemic Species Research Institute

The Conservation Education Center displays specimens of Taiwan’s endemic species. It also has a multimedia interactive area, and mounts irregular special exhibits. Outside is an ecoeducation park and butterfly ecology park.

Jiji and the Qingshui River and suffers little pollution, making it a cradle for special agricultural products such as bananas, nuomici litchis, and dragon fruit. Dili Catholic Church

Designed with Noah’s Ark in mind, this church is located on top of a mountain with a statue of Jesus in front.

This red-brick church has a history of more than 50 years. Located on a grassland, its simple and rustic design exudes a unique strength.

Yizekeng Waterfall

Tushiwan

This small waterfall in Minhe Village is formed by the weir and is a good place to cool off in summer. In good weather, Ci’en Pagoda is visible from there.

This 180 ∘ bend enfolds a hill and is known to locals as Tushiwan, or Catfish Bend. The hill is named Gugu Hill, after the call of the owl.

A-he’s Osmanthus Garden

Shuanglong Waterfall

More than 10,000 osmanthus trees grow here, surrounded by colorful tung trees.

Shuanglong Waterfall plunges about 100 meters over a sheer cliff and is divided into upper and lower waterfalls.

Bunun Homeland

Tannan Tribal Village This village is adjacent to Sun Moon Lake, accessible via Highway 63 from Ita Thao. Several streams flow through the village, and in April and May fireflies attract crowds of visitors. Fireflywatching activities are organized in mid- and late-April.

Tannan Primary School

Hunter’s Home

The tiniest primary school in Taiwan, hidden in the forest and built of modern materials with local rock, this school reflects the plain and natural character of the indigenous inhabitants. The school has won the Far East Architectural Award - 921 Campus Reconstruction Special Award.

The walls of this wooden house are painted with images of the Bunun tribe’s sacred hundred pacer snake, and rows of wild boar skulls hang from the eaves. Inside are displays of tribal machetes, bows, stone axes, and other Bunun hunting gear.

Dili Tribal Village

Shuanglong Primary School

Lifelike statues that illustrate the diligence and wisdom of the Bunun people greet visitors to this village. Walls in the village are decorated with clay carvings expressing resignation over control by an outside race. Shuanglong Tribal Village You can see aborigine carvings and murals everywhere in this village. You can also see the awesome Shuanglong Waterfall, cascading like a white dragon. The waterfall trail is left from the Japanese occupation period. Minhe Village Vegetable fern is the main crop at the head of the Zhuoshui River in Shuili, with more than 20 hectares in cultivation. In recent years there has been a switch to osmanthus, coffee, and other crops, along the with development of tourism linked to local sites including Minhe Primary School, native artifacts museum, Yizekeng Waterfall, and Yuxu Temple.

92

This school was reborn with a new face after the Sept. 21 earthquake. The architecture incorporates Bunun totems and employs green-building design, environmentally friendly construction, and a solar power system.

Zhuo’an Coffee

Minhe Primary School

The large gap between day and night temperatures here favors the production of high-quality coffee beans with a unique flavor.

With a user’s orientation, this school integrates elements of Bunun building techniques and once won first prize in the Far East Architectural Award - 921 Campus Reconstruction Special Award.
