PROJECT 1

VISION REACH:

COLOURFUL BUBBLES FOR THE HEARING-IMPAIRED An entrepreneurial incubation center for the hearing-impaired

This project is a coffee, ceramics and baking training centre for the hearing impaired to start a cafe business. It aimed at helping the disadvantaged group in Ningbo to find employment and integrate into society. This design takes into account the main feature of hearingimpaired people who rely on visual communication and aim to expand their visual reach range from 120° to 360°. Through strategies such as inflatable structures, split-level spaces and a colour wayfinding system, the building itself creates a unique identity within the urban environment with a visually guided space for the hearing-impaired.

Individual work 2022.03 - 2022.06

CONTEXT & USERS ANALYSIS Social Issue

Concept: Vision Reach

Hearing-impaired people need entrepreneurial guidance to better integrate into society.

This project mainly refers to the theory in the DeafSpace Design Guidelines and the study of a school case. The design is aimed at achieving the 360° vision reach space for the hearing-impaired.

This project will serve as part of the youth entrepreneurship incubation base on the north side to help special hearingimpaired groups start their own businesses.

PROJECT 2

THE PEACH COLONY ( 桃花源 ) From ancient Bridge Fair to modern Island Marketplace

This project is inspired by the essence of space from the old Chinese poem ‘The Peach Colony ( 桃 花 源 記 )’, an unexpected discovery of an ethereal utopia by a fisherman, an idealistic place of beauty, harmony and repose. I aim to tackle the urban issue of the increasing anxiety of modern people by recreating a similar spatial atmosphere to the Peach Colony – to offer a retreat space where people can actively engage in the market life to the extent that they could temporarily retreat from the harsh reality of life. This project will also take inspiration from the concept of the marketplace ( 市 井 ) in the Song Dynasty in ancient China and translate the programs and spatial organizations into a modern language to help relieve anxiety issues in the modern era.

Group work 2022.09 - 2022.12 Unless otherwise indicated, all other drawings and designs are independently completed by author.

Complete together with team members, mainly responsible for brainstorming and modification. 7

Modern people also experience a lot of anxiety similar to the author of ‘The Peach Colony ( 桃 花 源 記 )’. Inspired by the ancient poem, this concept aims to create a modern Peach Colony for anxious people, where they can temporarily stay away from the real situation and social identity, and freely participate in simple market life.

Cityscape in Aciant China Recreating the article of the peach colony, the area itself is like different chapters. The collective island will act as the orginal bridge, containing all the activities happening in each section, and the surrounding sections enrich the content of different programs. People can directly go to the specific area if they have a clear idea, whereas, those who come here without vague intentions, they can go straight to the compound market on the island.

PROJECT 3

CO-LIVING: ELDERLY + AQUAPONICS A community to revive traditional self-sufficient neighbourhood life This project aims to provide a modern co-living village mainly for the retired elderly in the future to enjoy urban agriculture and the traditional neighbourhood atmosphere. It is located in the ‘Peach Colony’( 桃 花 源 ) in Ningbo and will be jointly managed by Ningbo Urban Farming Club and Senior Community Centre. The inspiration of this project is to deal with the increasing social pressure. The resulting architectural proposal proposes a new possibility for elderly living by responding to the challenges of increased isolation from society and the nature of older people while providing a solution to the shortage of urban agricultural land

Individual work 2023.03 - 2023.06

13

CONCEPT & PROGRAMMES CONCEPT: Co-living with the elderly and urban farming The co-living concept is an integrated strategy based on the social, environmental and humanistic context of the site. It will respond to the issues such as shortage of urban agricultural land, ageing population, and elderly loneliness, and will reborn the site spirit of the Peach Colony to build neighbourhood life for the Chinese elderly.

NINGBO URBAN FARMING CLUB Shared public unit

Staff will provide technical support to help the elderly to manage farms.

Environmental Intention URBAN AGRICULTURAL LAND DECLINE China's rapid urbanisation over the past two decades has exacerbated the problems of insufficient agricultural land and food shortages.

Shared rooftop garden

The roof will serve as a shared space for residents to grow and process produce.

Environmental Intention AQUAPONICS TECHNOLOGY

Aquaponics technology can solve the problem of food shortage and make full use of natural resources to achieve self-sufficiency for the urban population.

NINGBO URBAN FARMING CLUB Aquaponics

ELDERLY COMMUNITY

Private housing Residential units will be connected by corridors, for a village atmosphere.

Site Intention SPECIFIC SITE

This design will be a specific deepening of masterplan planning, trying to combine the elderly, a special group, with urban agriculture to form a modern co-living community.

ELDERLY COMMUNITY

Vertical planting Water pipes will work as transportation and load-bearing structures.

Social Intention

Humanistic Intention

AGING POPULATION As people's life expectancy and health status increase, the elderly need new social activities after retirement.

The project is a part of market life in the masterplan. It will revive the traditional neighbourhood atmosphere and self-sufficient lifestyle.

Shared living unit Elderly people will enjoy co-living life and interact with various visitors.

PLACE SPIRIT

Shared corridor The linear corridor will serve as a transportation and activity space.

Social Intention TRADITIONAL NEIGHBOURHOOD LIFE

In the past, people lived in "compounds" and formed a unique social network through close neighbourhood, which is a reference for the elderly to care for themselves together in the future.

PROJECT 4 Brighton is a fantastic choice for my mother and me!

Our moving plan... I plan to take a postgraduate program in London and settle down as a firstgeneration immigrant. As my mother doesn't want to be separated from me, after much deliberation we decide to acquire a house and live in Brighton together.

OUR NEW HOME ! A renovated house for mother and daughter to live in the UK together

London Ovingdean Brighton

This project is a converted private house located in Brighton. It is based on my plan to move to the UK with my mother three years later.

Why Brighton We chose Brighton, a city located on the south side of London. 1.The transportation is convenient, which is easy for me to commute to London; 2. It is surrounded by abundant natural resources and public facilities, which is suitable for my mother to spend her elderly life. 3. Housing prices in Brighton are in line with our expectations, so we could buy a house and renovate it.

As two adult Asian women, we have individual lifestyles that require intertwining and uninterrupted daily routines. Therefore, we choose to acquire a house in Brighton, a beautiful and convenient commuting place, and renovate it to suit our habits.

Mother's routine

While I was always at work, my mother would spend the daytime alone at home. Her main activity route is the garden - laundry room - reading corner - living room - kitchen - terrace, so these series of spaces will be designed as open and continuous spaces under the skylight to ensure that she can enjoy more natural light.
