PROLOGUE

The phrase " 天 (Heaven) 地 (Earth) 人 (Humankind) 和 (Harmony)" is an old Chinese saying that expresses the unique Chinese concept of dealing with the world, the ancient Chinese thinking about the connection between their own bodies and spirits and everything else. The core idea lies in the word "harmony", which symbolises the harmonious relationship between man and all things. With this thought in mind, I pay more attention to the connection between people and external matters that architecture can embody. In terms of research questions, I would use my works to seek answers for the following inquiries: 1) How does a housing project deal with the connection between its residents, including social relations, distance, privacy, etc.? 2) How does a rural revitalization project create economic vitality, and how does it look at the relationship between the original dwellers and new immigrants? 3) How does architecture best reconcile the balance between people and technology in a nuclear contaminated city regeneration project? Based on reflections on the interaction between the person itself and external objects, I believe my portfolio can offer my answer to the above questions.

01 SCHRODINGER-TYPE OF RELATIONSHIP An Intermediate Space Between Public And Privacy A Vital Combination Of Diverse Artists Site/Eling Testbed 2, Chongqing, China Instructor/Tian Qi Third Year Studio/High Density Dwelling Design/2018 Fall

In the fall of 2018, after two years of basic architecture courses, I tried to explore the possibility of high-density dwelling under the leadership of my teacher, Tian Qi. We have chosen the site for Eling Testbed2, a remodeled industrial park where artists gather. It is gradually becoming a good place for a large number of trendy young people to visit in Chongqing. Meanwhile, with the popularization of the Internet and the development of artificial intelligence, live streaming has gradually become an indispensable part of people's lives. In addition to enriching the amateur life of the public, live streaming has also given many talented ordinary people the opportunity to show themselves. Life anchors have shown great commercial potential and it has become an extremely popular profession for a while. Young artists are also trying to enter the public eye in this way to gain the chance of money and fame. The once dome that Truman tried to escape from is now the world that these live broadcast artists eager to enter. Therefore, I considered combining the two to design a high-density residence for young "live artists". Here, their privacy space is minimized and simplified. In addition to meeting their work needs, the daily living space is more of a "stage", broadcasting their activities to surrounding tourists and audiences on the Internet. At the same time, this residence also encourages them to interact and cooperate, creating new inspirations in the collision of different art types.

ling Testbed2 is located at the peak of the main city of Chongqing, overlooking the main city landscape. Its predecessor was a printing factory, but as the pace of China's industrial revolution intensified, the Eling Printing Factory was replaced, and the factory area was abandoned. Fortunately, the old industrial plant was not demolished, but was used by a group of young artists. They perform artistic creations such as architecture reform, graffiti, sculpture, film shooting and so on. The abandoned factory buildings were given new vitality due to their presence, and gradually became the most popular place for young people to visit, tour and relax.

he project had to define their basic privacy demands as well as their desire to maximize their own personalities. I therefore confined the 'privacy' to a core cylinder of a 2m x 2m x 1.5m unit, and developed the volume outwards by Modular Integrated Construction (MIC) method. While the spaces were interlaced and shared, their independent yet integrated relationship with each other and their desire to retain privacy yet draw attention were subtly addressed. Through MIC, user's individuality was clearly expressed with each individual room as a translation of personality. 8

cheme A is located in the narrow public space between the two old industrial buildings, facing the steps where people can sit and rest, and is completely surrounded by sight. The artists’ rooms are combined vertically and the window area of the “stage” are maximized to obtain the most significant display effect. The room on the backlit side introduces brighter skylight through the design of diagonal skylights. This plan minimizes the public space to maximize individuality and economy. 11

cheme B provides a combination that communication and co-working happens more frequently. The core cylinder is devided into two parts and the four rooms combine on the second level. Compared with Scheme A, this plan can provide the residents much bigger public places such as a co-working place devided by slidable shelves which are designed to adapt the place to different working demands, a place for leisure or sports facilities on the second level and especially, a larger roof-garden. Scheme B is sited at the entering squre of the Eling Second Testbed Garden where visitors can sit around and watch the artists performing.

odular integrated construction is the most suitable building construction mode for individual combination. The core cylinder can be assembled in real time with the selection of scheme types A and B. The "stage space" is prefabricated and can undergo more personalized and customized changes under discussion between the artist and the architect. At this time, the convenient, fast, easy-to-adjust and stable wooden frame can best adapt to the assembly of different types of "stage" spaces. The entire construction process can be extremely fast and cheap.

ive artists not only perform their lives through the Internet, but their interaction with real audiences is also very important. Therefore, the relationship between the architecture and the surroundings is also the focus of my consideration. Through the grasp of the entire building scale and the design of some roof terraces, balconies, and porches, the entire building presents a cordial attitude in the site, and is adaptable to even much more cramped sites. At the same time, with some sinking space in the venue, the audience can watch in multiple dimensions and even participate in the performance. I believe that in such a Truman's world, "live artists" can maximize their talents and make infinite possibilities.

02 THE DUET A Rural Activator From Production To Marketing And Experiences

Site/Xishui, Guizhou, China Instructor/Zuo Li Third Year Studio/Rural Revitalization Design/2019 Summer

In the summer of 2019, I participated in a project about Rural Revitalization. Our goal is to reform a nursing home in Tuhe village, Xishui County, Guizhou Province. After a series of interviews and research, we learned that the left behind elderly here are still full of vitality and eager to work. The villagers were committed to the development of characteristic agricultural products and cultural tourism industry in order to help the economic growth of the village. Most of the visitors are city escapers, who hoped to experience the original rural life here. The original building of the nursing home was just facing a large area of lotus pond and cultivated land, with rich natural resources and beautiful landscape. Therefore, with the help of excellent natural resources, I tried to combining the agriculture in the village with the villagers, the elderly and tourists who come to experience rural life, so as to promote the revitalization of the rural economy. The new building through the form of assembly line, let the three groups work together to complete the process from production to sales. The city and the village are just like the square and the spiral. They seem to be out of place, but I wish they would prosper together in the fierce collision and integration.

he former nursing home is located next to a secondary road in the village, with its back against the mountain and a large lotus pond and farmland in front of it. It has a wide view, beautiful scenery and rich natural resources. The large-scale settlements in the village are mainly concentrated in the south, so most villagers come from the south side of the site. At the same time, most of the vehicles leaving the village go through here. At the same time, there are many plank roads for people to walk above the water. 24

fter constructing an assembly line from production to sales, I also considered connecting excellent environmental resources with users' lives as much as possible. Through the dislocation of the two mirrored blocks, I am here to add outdoor public space elements such as grass, stone steps, and platforms to to provide a more diverse green life. At the same time, the plank road extending to the lotus pond is also connected to the village's walking system, maximizing the encouragement of residents to connect with the rich natural life. Incorporate experiential tourism in the rural commercial system to enhance the interaction between urban and rural areas. Everyone cannot live without the economy even in rural area. I believe that this rural conveyor belt from production to marketing will bring great prosperity.

03 RUINS REVIVAL A sewn up monument to the rebirth of a nuclear polluted city

Site/Prypiat, Ukraine Instructor/He Shiyuan Collaborator:Lin Syuanying/Evolo/2019 Spring

On April 26,1986,an explosion occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant near Pripyat, Ukraine, emitting a large amount of high-energy radiation into the atmosphere at a dose that was more than 400 times that of Hiroshima's original explosion during WorldWar ll. The accident is considered to be the most serious nuclearaccident in history. According to there port on the research results, a total of 2 billion people worldwide are affected by the Chernobyl accident. Perhaps hundreds of years later, although the land here is still not suitable for planting or living, the radiation in the air will not affect the human body, so we hope that this land can be revived and reproduce a harmonious and livable life. Retaining the original broken town streetscape and retaining such wounds are exposing and commemorating the heavy disaster caused by this nuclear accident. The skyscraper which standing on the winding is as a monument, and the torn high-rises are always alerting the world to pay attention to the safe development and use of nuclear energy, but at the same time we must look forward to new hopes and new life, so we will sew this wound and extend newhopes to all corners of the city to revive the city. Give him a new life. New land will get extending in all directions on abandoned ground. More life stories will be staged on this new healthy land. 36

he city of Pripyat, just 3 km from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the city of 50,000 people who had worked with the Chernobylnuclear power plant and their families also lost their vitality and was abandoned. Local residents are only allowed to take a small amount of documents, books and clothes after the accident. Many apartments look like they have been robbed. Many homes have been unrepaired. The building has not been maintained, the roof hasleaked, and the building materials are scattered. It seems to be almost a ghost town. Compared with savagely growing plants, abandoned playgrounds, kindergartens, schools, hospitals and otherscenes are constantly emitting cold sorrows, as if it is the most intuitive disclosure of the enormous power of nuclear energy and the damage it brings and the sorrow of fragile life. 38

he new tower is both the hub of urban life and energy. The new inhabitants will look to the underground for available energy and power the newborn city through thermal power generation and nuclear reuse. Huge floats of land extend to every corner of the city, bringing new life to the crumbling city while connecting to the energy space beneath, transmitting the electricity produced to the hub of the towers for management and distribution. I wish that in the distant future, as the number of floating belts grows, Pripyat will become a place where people reflect on history and create a better future. And one day the city will finally see a real revival of its own.
