Information

The new typeface, Cooper Hewitt, is a contemporary sans serif, with characters composed of modified-geometric curves and arches. Initially commissioned by Pentagram to evolve his Polaris Condensed typeface, Chester Jenkins created a new digital form to support the newly transformed museum. “Developing this typeface specifically for Cooper Hewitt has been enormously gratifying,” said Jenkins. “Instead of building on the Polaris structures, I drew everything from scratch, using the existing forms as a rough guide for letter widths and master-stroke thicknesses.” The Cooper Hewitt typeface is available for free of charge for unrestricted public use under the SIL Open Font License and has been downloaded more than 25,000 times from our website. Examples of its uses are sent to us regularly and we are thrilled to share the creative work inspired by the font’s bold design. We welcome your project submissions, suggestions for improvements, and hacked versions of the font that make our typeface truly your own.

oo aa 8

The letter “o of this font is not a perfect circle. Compare to Avenir, it more look like an oval but not a geomatric circle.

Cooper Hewitt is a contemporary sans serif. The stroke is like human sans because it has similarities. The bowls of it is similar with Times New Rome. It start with thin stroke and then gradually becomes thicker.

b ↑ 2

3

↑ 1

1. The stroke strats with a thinner line. 2: It gradually becomes thicker. This’s similar with humanist font. 3. It’s widest part of the and the middle part of the stroke has the same line weight. 4. Stem is not straight. 5. It is the shape for the bottom of the stem.

5

4

9

M M is a mirror letter. The apexes are flat, and the bottom stroke are also flat. The line weight are eactly the same. This is the characteristic of Cooper Hewitt font capital letters.

10

Oo Both capital “O” and lower case “o” don’t look like a perfect circle. It has minimal contrast because the stroke all start in the middle line. The middle is thinner than the side part. Lower case “o” doesn’t look exactly the same as capital”O.”

11

Ii The dot of “i” is square. It is wider than the stem and the upper case “I”.

12

Jj

The hook of “J” seems like horizontal, but it actually has a little bit angle. it has 0.5 degree angle. The dot of lower case “j” is also a square that is larger than the stem.

The Tiger

Heavy

TIGER, tiger, burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Thin

In what distant deeps or skies Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire?

Light

And what shoulder and what art Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand and what dread feet?

Book

What the hammer? what the chain? In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? What dread grasp Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

Medium

When the stars threw down their spears, And water’d heaven with their tears, Did He smile His work to see? Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Semibold

Tiger, tiger, burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Punctuation For Sale Margo Taft Stever My childhood house is stripped, bared, open to the public. The for-sale sign impales the front pasture, grass is cut and prim, no trimmings left to save Women in sable parade through halls and men in tailored suits talk about dimensions. They don’t know lizards present themselves on the basement stairs or worms dapple pears in the orchard. Doors of rabbit hutches hang from hinges and rust scratches on rust in wind, noise unheard by workers who remodel the old farmhouse into an Italian villa painted peach. Death can empty a house of shoes worn and new, of children who climbed the grandfather trees, impressing outlines like fossils

16

“ ‘ : ; !? . , –“ i The puncuation does not have circle dots. It compose with square dots. The size is exactly same as the dots form letters.
