“The Hive” is an infrastructure project that can better meet the emerging demand for incorporating advanced Drone technology into daily life in New York City. The project aims to create a central control terminal that hosts docking and charging stations for personal or commercial drones in the center of Manhattan. The current air-zoning regulations are to be re-shaped in a vertical highway model around a tower. This centrally-controlled model will be more appealing to the legislative sector as it adheres to the concerns about regulating drone traffic. The primary location of the building does not only gather the commercial power of Manhattan, but also stands away from the no-fly-zones set by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).

Drone Technology Drone technology, adopted by many large corporations, has become a leading trend in the field of fast-delivery, aerial mapping, commercial advertising, government inspection, and film making. As recent years have witnessed a rise in the development of drone technology, several major corporations, such as Amazon, DHL and Walmart, have begun investigating the use of drones in high speed delivery service. As more and more people live on internet-based lifestyles, these “small flying robots could easily become an ordinary part of future everyday life. The demand for high speed drone delivery is estimated to increase continuously in the upcoming years. However, legal restrictions on the navigation of drones are currently standing in the way of drastically broadening the use of drones in various aspects of our daily lives. No-fly zones and conditions to maintain visibility with the drone at all times are two of the main constraints.

A Live Facade The Modules on the faรงade are designed to fit nine different types of drones, categorized by the shape and scale of their landing fixtures (Point, bar or ring). A sequential study of how to categorize non-uniformed industry products into modular fixed architectural structures was conducted through a series of simplification of the geometries and articulations of the forms. The different sizes and geometry of the drone paired with different size and geometry of the module result in a variety of configurations. To provide a safe landing environment, the tower projected a new method for drones to dock horizontally onto their corresponding platforms with the fitting shape and scale; the platform with docked drones can be flipped vertically to be in parallel with the tower faรงade. The faรงade is constantly animated as the platforms flip outwards and backwards to nest back into it.

[Veil]ent State seeks to engage the relationship between the physical enclosure and the urban realm through the slice and lift of the veil, immortalizing the history of Beirut within the walls of a cultural and performing arts center. The project hosts two distinct yet related event spaces for both performing art and practicing arts. The symbolic state figure is gently shrouded within the sophisticated Veil while it marks the new generation of the city after severe deconstruction damage from wars.

The Form In the act of veiling something/ oneself, the delineation of what is exterior and interior is sometimes lost. What is a wall if it isn’t to divide? What is a door if it doesn’t allow passage? Somewhere within the gradient of opacity and transparency, though, exists the veil. The veil acts not only as a sheath, but as a visually permeable surface. The veil is not just the wall; it is the threshold as well. For the Lebanese-Omani Centre, the veil could begin to express programmatic and interstitial spatial relationships. A gradient of perforations on the façade suggests the differences in light allowance based not only on these programmatic needs but on inclusive and exclusive zones.

The Veil The marriage of a veiled façade and a formal ramping gesture as a means of circulation begins to call to forefront the contextual relationship of the project to the city of Beirut itself. Historically and geographically relevant is that of the veil, a “curtain-like” material which shields the body from the world. The veil exists not only between the literal boundary of the interior building and the urban realm; the veil demarcates the performance hall’s margin as well. Particular to its site, [VEIL]ent State is nested in a series of vacant lots which are bordered on one side by a public, local domain and the other by a diplomatic urgency.

By dissipating the residential vitality within the ecological flow network, Suture Island interchanges the natural setting of New York Upper Bay and the synthetic beauty of the “Second Central Park“. The channel excavation of Governors Island is the innovative approach to the proposal where an separated ecological marshland is preserved to buffer the current collision from the ocean environment, thus to protect the student community from the disturbance of the environment.

Palazzo del Lavoro Intervention Artist Thinktank Space as the Intervention onf Existing Palace Workshop at Politecnico di Torino, Italy Instructor : Mark Visconti, Lonn Combs Partner: Alec DuMond, Xin Yang, Sofia Sipione
Plazza de Lavoro, originally designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, resides in the south entry of the city in Trino, Italy. Addressing the program of the building gave participants of the workshops a chance to consider what it means to be sustainable from a programmatic point of view. In an attempt to create a self-sustaining program, the team looked at emerging think tank typologies. The idea was to incorporate all steps of the creative process, from design to marketing and sales, in a series of programmatic units within the existing exhibition hall.

Secondory Circulation The project “Pro-Foundation“ manifests itself in a strong circulatory back bone. The varied program units were integrated vertically among each other through different levels; they were also placed along the path where a catwalk was designed to be elevated to serve as a secondary circulation. Creative Think Tank The open space remains the foundation of the old exhibition welcoming atomosophere and the intimate closed structures let the artists and visitors intervent a long-lasting and profound relationship.

From Material Research of Particulate Matter to A Design Intervention of Aggregate Matter For Thesis Project at Rensselaer “Harriet R. Peck Prize Nomination” for the best solution to a thesis project Instructor: Ted Ngai
“From PM to AM” is a project that harvests these Particulate Matters, specifically sand or dust from the storm hazard conditions to redeposit and aggregate them as usable building material to accommodate efficient urban living scenarios. The project couples a material research and a design intervention by incorporating the different material agency of sand into the practical realm of construction. Ultimately, it aims at inventing a self-constructive method for human beings to convert the catastrophic damages into sustainable lifestyles: Given a scaffolding set around an existing irrigation circle in arid land, people would be able to progressively build up habitable defensive walls in response to sand storms by aggregating sand itself and preserving the precious green land in the middle.

Material Research The approach I am asserting is from the perspective of particulate matters - a very fine scale of material that is ubiquity in the atmosphere on earth. Particulate Matter is a mutual description of all kinds of material fragments ranging from automobile exhaust, oil smokes, rock deposits, sand grains to pollens, bacteria and anything else that is below 100 micron radius and is able to be suspended in the air. The scale of such material determined its characteristic to be easily ignored. The abundance of its existence, though, has a large potential to develop. The material research part of the project went through different phases and settled on using the mixture of sand and wax to produce the final model. With applied heat, about 3 to 4 ratio of sand to wax mixture can be bond to a drippable state. It allows a relatively slow process of forming corresponding to the sandstorm velocity.

[Re]inventing Beijing Courtyards
Different from those large formal courtyard houses, the low-rise residential complexes around Baitasi area have undergone a series of informal construction developments. The original enclosure form of a typical courtyard is in certain level lost. To revive the history of the courtyard lifestyle at the same time to rennovate the possibility of living for the future hutong-ers, we propose to stage some cultral scenes by bringing the open courtyards back to the condense structure of the existing buildings.

Courtyard Typology C2, located on the east side straight from Baitasi, posesses an unique and very recognizable perimeter. In our plan of rennovation, we designed three scenes as [Pay a Visit], [Take a Look] & [Think for a Second] to activate the interaction between the exhibior and the visitors. The alternation between open courtyard and enclosed exhibition space is brought together by a coninuous circulation route that also includes a path to the viewing rooftop. A flexible Folding Door system is installed in two of the three scenes to alternate the circulation between private housing and public event catering. Such system can help the residents and visitors build up a adaptable lifestyle, thus improving the healthy community relationships.

PoroCity is a muti-modular transportational terminal system that intended to promote resilience in the city of Stockholm by creating a site of interaction between the different modes of local transportation system with local inhabitants, which includes human, plants, and animals. Although the city of Stockholm is gifted with the advantage of 1:1:1 ratio between its urban fabric, green space and water area, our project is located at the very heart of the city where human and the public transportation have lost access to the nature and the waterfront.

Construction and Fabrication The construction of PoroCity is aimed to increase the level of engagement with the waterfront, provide an area of bike storage that encourage the transition between the biking and water bus system, and a carefully formulated rooftop bird sanctuary that formally provide a variety of spatial, daylighting, and moisture quality to meet the diverse species of local birds and plants. The fabrication methodology takes advantage of the locally found basalt rocks with its multiple weathering and plant growing capacities along with the new development of rock fabrication treatments that involves carving, 3D printing, and casting of our basalt rock composite.
