Born and raised in Taiwan, Yihung Chang studied business in America for four years. In the business school, he struggled in what he really wanted. He learned new knowledge, but he was never into it. What he enjoyed the most was drawing and sketching the landscape outside the window. One day in 2012, Yihung finally made up his mind to study Interior Design Architecture because he realized to be an interior designer is what he wanted. Another reasons was because of his family

background. His parents are opening an interior construction company for commercial spaces, which influenced him a lot in studying architecture. All the details, space planning, and designing excited him. Yihung understands he is born to design because the passion he feels in designing make him willing to learn everything he can. In the design process, transforming ideas into actual design is challenging, but he has to do it and he loves to do it.

CLIENT 10

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CONTAINER HOUSE

CLIENT Natural disasters happen everywhere on the earth that we cannot avoid, but we can reduce the damage from natural disasters bring us. Another issue we should car is thousands of shipping containers are traveling all over the place and board nearby ports. To solve two problems at a time, using shipping containers to build a house for those houseless people is one of the best choice.

The first case of designing container house is in Taiwan, my hometown; there are typhoons happen in Taiwan every years. In 2009 summer, typhoon Morakot damaged Taiwan seriously, especially Kaoshiung. The project is for people survive from the disaster, and include those affected households.

Keeping everything simple, function, and close to net zero are important because we have a limit budget from the donation which is around $826,552,353. A 40’ and 20’ containers, extensive green roof, water collection system, solar panel, solar water heater, solar shade, and everything a family needs for basic usage, so family can have rebuild a new life .

SITE ANALYSIS

SITE ANALYSIS The weather in Taiwan is hot and moist, especially in Kaohsiung. Tthe climate is around 20째C in winter and 27째C at summer. Cooling the house through creating windows with good wind circulation inside the house and extensive green roof on the top of containers. Also the amount of monthly raining in Kaohsiung has a big different between winter and summer, so the water collection system with filter and 40 GAL container is extremely important.

SOLAR PANEL

Receive the daylight and change to energy that can be storage in batteries for daily use. Due to the budget of the house, I choose to install solar panel and solar water heater with fixed structure and place at the angle of 20째 which is the angle that solar panel and collect the maximum solar energy every day.

4

EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOF W/ TSUBOKUSA

The reason for choosing extensive green roof is because the bearing of the shipping container is not as strong as the concrete. The extensive green roof are light and we can cover with local vegetation mat, Tsubokusa.

22

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CONTAINER HOUSE

2

SOLAR SHADE

Solar shade had been installed facing the south side, the main purpose is to stop too much natural daylight in summer, and in the winter the angle of sun at the noon are still be able to shoot into the interior. The best part is that children are be able to laying on the playground and feel the sunlight.

5

WATER COLLECT SYSTEME

Rainwater will filter through the green roof and drain into the rainwater container at the back of the house than will than go through the filter inside the house and finally stay in house .

3

SOLAR HEATER

If the users want to have enough electric power every day, the minimum number of solar panel will have to be 6 pieces. 4 hour is the shortest daylight in winter of Kaoshung, and actually they will have create more than they use, so storage batteries will be able to provide them enough electric power in bad weather.

6

40GAL Water CONTAINER + FILTER

The water container and filter is located under the storage of seats. Through the grey water system, we will have to include grey water for users to use the rain water effectively in dish washing.

The client I considers are the family with four members which are the average number of members in family in Taiwan. Through the designing process, I looks through the thousands pictures of the reconstruction in Taiwan. They are designing to fit as many people as they can, but I feel like there could be more than just a box. House is considering the port of life journey, so it should include more

than just a place to take a rest. The reconstruction after the disaster should not be like a box to collect everyone, but give them a port where they can rest and seek a bright future after typhoons and disasters. A community they can gather people again, find the bright future. These are the reason that I choose to design a house as my first sustainable project, a house that brings energy.

CLIENT 34

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN ERNEST HOUSE

CLIENT A residential project contains three little projects on three different floors. This building is owned by Mariotto’s family since Ernest’s grandfather. In this design project, there are three types of residents; a married couple, a single man, and a teenager. It is a challenging project; three different projects, but living in the whole building. I will have to consider the vertical circulation and their relationship.

Ernest’s sister and her husband, work in their house, Ernest is a single man who lives on the second floor. And Ernest’s nephew, who is the college student, lives on the ground floor. By considering three different groups using the space, I came up with three different concepts. All of these concepts are decided through the consideration of their habits and personality when they use the space.

Life styles, habits, and idea of living spaces are totally different, but they all have a connection in consanguinity. The idea of deciding concepts are referred back to clients themselves. In the end of this project, a house that connects clients and an interior perfectly is my goal. This is not easy, but a challenge helps me to be a better interior designer who considers the best for each client.

CLIENT The purpose of this CCRC is making retirees feel at home. Interior are using high- end material with universal design in the environment. “Very few project types combine such a variety of uses, and it is this diversity that challenges designers to create spaces that will appeal to the wants of a very specific demographic.”

Designing rooms and space to convenience residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia is extremely hard because they are emotionally sensitive about surrounding changes. The design will have to be simple and easy to remember. Also the surrounding will have to be used for both residents and caring people, so residents will have a basic dignity.

Continuing Caring Retirement Center (CCRC) is not only the place to take care of elders, but it is a social community for elders to find someone similar easier. To share the same life style, so elders will not have to rush or force themselves into inconvenience situation.

OPEN SPACE

DROP DOWN CIELING

2

Open Space in front of the hallway is for residents to wait for others. Considering some elders walk slower, so friends will be able to stand on the side and wait.

INDEPENDENT LIVING UNIT

3

The drop down ceiling is the transition of the public and living space. In my concept, this symbolize the snake remove its skin and become stronger. Here, elders leave the noise behind and enter a quiet space.

4

Independent living unit are using bright color mostly, but a dark wood in front of the doors. The material and color change can remind elders their location. With the hand rail around the interior walls, elders can walk safer.

SEATING AREA The seating area is designed for elders to take a rest. A seating area that can fit four people at a time, so they can chat there without going far away to the public space.

PHYSICAL THERAPY

3

Skylight in the middle collects the natural light and penetrate into the entire health care center. With the great amount of natural light, visitors here will feel more pleasure to come here.

4

Physical therapy room is located in the center of the space with matte glass sliding door. Matte glass provides enough privacy of patients inside and also keep the sunlight through the entire health care center.

CONCEPT KNOT

My concept of designing the chair is considering chair that user can seat with relax position. “Lying down on lounge chair are the ideal position for myself, To shrink down the size, so save it safe space in the interior. As the requirement, I like to showing the natural of the wood. Keeping wood knot and showing it as a feature of design. Knots can alsot be a secure meaning to create stronge structure which make comfortable, Dowels are the choice for me to use in the design, and showing the end grain adds a interesting feature on the surface.
