PA R R A M AT TA A Q U AT I C C E N T R E A Public Playground
Fall 2018 | individual
Parramatta Aquatic Centre turns an underutilised public space into a playground of sporting and leisure. It locates west of Parramatta CBD on a large sloped lawn which had hardly any affordances for activities. The architecture has two retaining walls cutting through the site to bring two urban points together: the Parramatta School and an entry which gets the most access. The part of slope between the retaining walls is flattened. The corner defined by the walls is afforded primacy in the whole architecture. Timber pavilions to accommodate programmes are arranged gradually smaller, lower and more scattered from the corner. Negative spaces among the pavilions which remains as lawn also accommodate programmes. For functioning, access to this architecture is from two entries where the top of the retaining walls meets the ground. From the school side it’s easier to approach swimming related facilities whereas the other to more commercial programmes. Users are welcome to navigate through the pavilions and anywhere on this ground plane, stay or move on their discretion. This evokes various socialising activities. A public playground is thus established.
