MEDITATION. WABI-SABI. ACCELERATE SEASONS. Instructor: Project: Location: Type: Time:

Thomas Phifer & Gabriel Smith Meditation Room Fort Tryon Park Studio Work Fall Semester 2011

Wabi-Sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is a beauty of things unconventional. ------Leonard Koren

This is a very beautiful project to me, within poetry. It is located in a park in Manhattan. The place occupied by human activities in the park which is casual and mundane, how do we define a temple in such an area? For me, The zen culture is beyond mundane, it is mysterious, it is evasive and it is secluded. It should presents in a low position but 01

control the spirit of the whole area. And one of the main characters about the unique Japanese culture-wabisabi is the respect of nature, in my opinion, the idealist way of meditation is talking to the nature directly without any disturb. The concept is to create a place to escape ,it is dark except the light from the only open square roof of the top, seasons come together with the light, everything become extremely unique but strong, in a world of nowhere. When detach from the world we are familiar with, sense are amplify, in the darkness, the light is pure, the rain is pure, the snow is pure, the falling leaf is pure, and of course, the spirit is pure.

T-HUT. ADAPT THE TERRITORY. CAMPUS FUEL REFILL STATION. Instructor: Project: Location: Type: Time:

Lixin Li Tea & Coffee Store Valentine Island in Xiamen University at Zhangzhou Campus Studio Work Fall Semester 2009

Situated in the suburban campus of Xiamen University, this teahouse addresses the gap between land development and human activities. Although supermarkets and dining halls are configured in this campus, seldom alternatives places can be found for students and faculties to have a break in their spare time. Therefore in this design, I hope the Tea House can work as a medium that provides immediate and frequent services, for people who would like to stop to replenish their energy. In the north of the campus locates the student apartment, where people gather and vents happens. The teahouse is on the way from dormitories to the department build13

ings, it provides a Possible stop ofamenities. The primary purpose of this design is to provide a convenient spot for students and teachers to refresh themselves. Considering their intensive schedule on weekdays, it becomes important to get relaxed while saving time. The new teahouse will be the place which is easy to step in and out. The view is another important factor to be considered, the building stretches itself from the top of a small hill which is covered by dense vegetations to the foot, the principle idea is to reach the balance between the building and its surroundings. The best way is to introduce vegetations to the inner space and create a continuity nature loop along the teahouse.

YOUTH LOFT. RENNOVATION OF FACTORY. THE CREATION PALACE FOR POOR ARTISTS. Instructor: Project: Location: Type: Time:

Lixin Li Tree House + Artificial Forest + Dreams Factory Xiagan Port Studio Work Summer Semester 2011

Recalling your childhood dreams, as an innocent kid, have you ever imagined living in a tree house? Have you ever eager to live in a place surrounded by your best friends? When you grow up, you may still keep these fantastic imaginations. Besides, youths also would like to paint their owe futures, they want to conduct something they are really interested in and even develop them into occupations. However, that is somehow impossible for students who just graduated from universities, they have no budget. The main purpose of this project is to fulfill the entire need of living and working for young people, a new type of cheap loft as well as a big playground. 25

This project is base on the renovation of an old factory space. The building locates in a high density area, it is surrounding by plenty of old residential building and other abandon factories. When considering the financial burden of people who just start their own business, the least cost is one of the primary principle of this design, therefore I choose containers as the basic elements, which is not only cheap but also easy to construct and obtain. The triangle roof together with the containers form a concentrated space, and create free space for working.

BUILDING BLOCK. PLAYGROUND. HAVING PARTY WHILE PRACTISING. Instructor: Project: Location: Type: Time:

Ronald Faleide Olympic Training Center Boulder, Colorado, United States Studio Work Spring Semester 2012

As we may know, Boulder is a typical American town which is located in Colorado, having an affluent community within a peaceful environment. Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, the town becomes one of the best places for skiing in the wintertime and attracts numerous tourists as the gateway to the skiing fields. The training center is designed for athletes from all over the world as well as the local residents. The site is a long and narrow plot along the major avenue, from here it is convenient to access to the skiing fields in the mountain. The brief concept is to scatter different programs linearly and string them together 37

by a public corridor. The challenge is how to organize these complicated programs within a single building, in order to ensure an appropriate circulation without sacrificing the special Experience at the same time. The strategy is to classify the programs by grouping similar functions, and then make them be bounded by a circulation core. The sense of direction in the training center will become visually clear even it houses a great number of rooms with different purpose.

RECONSIDE ROCKFELLER. INSERT UNIVERSITY IN THE MIDTOWN OF MAHATTAN. Instructor: Project: Location: Type: Time:

Jeffery Johnson University Rockefeller Center, New York, NY, United States Studio Work Summer Semester 2015

Nowadays campus has established more connections with the whole society, the campus is trying to search more resources for the whole education system, to create more opportunities for students to practice and to integrate into society. Also, the society desires more and more campus, campus in community, campus in company, campus in industry. To educate people, to create communication and to enhance creativities. Rockefeller center is the place which has the potential to be upgraded by introducing a campus into this site, together with all the 47

offices, entertainments, retails surround it, education can help them create plenty of outputs, on the other hand, the campus and students can also benefit from them. So we decide to designed a new type of campus in the middle of mahattan, it will combines education with other relative programs in a single project. The education part is the core and a link penetrate into other part of the project to organize the whole project as a whole system. The purpose of this design is to take advantage of the site benefit to make the interaction between campus and relative programs more vigorous, efficient and profitable.

HOPSCA. SYSTEMETIC. A FUTURE CITY CENTER. Director: Project: Location: Type: Time:

Tomoki Iwasita Ningbo Shimao Hopsca Ningbo, Zhejiang, China Professional Work Fall 2013

This is my second professional project, the hopsca beside Rihu Park in Ningbo. This site is in one of the urban planning projects of the government, and this area has great potential to become the city center in next decades. The beautiful environment and the smooth traffic condition contribute a lot to this project. After analyzing the value of the land , we divide the land into different parts according to its value and use the most valuable parts for commercial use. As a complex building accompanied by office buildings, commercial stores and a big 59

bank, the key to the success of this project is how to take control of the visitor flow rate. In order to avoid traffic jams and attract more consumers at the same time, the entrance should be located in the main street. Moreover, another goal is to create as many inner street shops as possible to enhance the commercial value of this project. In practice, it has been proven that a ‘X’ circulation will be beneficial for both. The ‘X’ circulation allow the maximum along street stores and create a most flexible accesses, also together with the central sunken plaza form a vigorous economic atmosphere.
