Summer 2023 Academic Work, Individual Work Site: Chongqing, China Instructor: Yufei Zheng, Yingying Liu

It is a recreational venue that can adapt its spatial layout to meet the diverse needs of different social groups at different times. The aim is to strike a balance between the utilization of space resources by both local residents and visiting tourists. This project encompasses entertainment, commercial, and exhibition spaces, all interconnected through Chongqing's distinctive mountain city pathway aesthetic.

The site is located in Chongqing, a renowned tourist city known for its mountainous terrain and unique cuisine. The project must accommodate the demands of both local residents and incoming visitors within its limited space.

The vision for this project is to offer different spatial configurations on weekdays, holidays, and festivals, catering to various target audiences.

The traditional layered spaces of the mountainous city are preserved through modern expressions, showcased by transparent podium facades, creating a bright and dynamic visual experience. The architecture is like an exciting box, boasting a vibrant interior space that captivates not only visitors but also the entire city, inviting people to come closer and become a part of it.

In most projects, modularity is often addressed as means of production rather than design. In this project, modules are not only manufactured and put together the same way, but also possess the ability to be rearranged on site.

The reconfigurable par ts include different sizes and functions, which can be folded, combined, and adapted to create larger spaces. The flexible typologies allow for potential changes in seasons and users.

These reconfigurable components form diverse spatial patterns, and visitors can access real-time space maps on their mobile devices to stay informed about the latest events and activities.

I’m waiting for you in the entrance hall. Please hurry.

This is a permanently temporary space. You can see that there are always interesting activities going on here.

Visito rs have the freedom to choose different navigation modes based on their preferences, allowing them to personalize their tour routes and explore points of interest that align with their individual tastes. Additionally, the project integrates Chongqing's mountain pathway design language, offering visitors the opportunity to experience a pedestrian street with a distinct local character.

The unique stepped spaces of the mountainous city are creatively expressed through modern techniques, with the suspended metal stairs capturing the imagination and exploration of visitors as they envision and navigate the daily experience of climbing and ascending in the city. Simultaneously, these suspended stairs on the western facade serve as a vital link between different spatial modules, meeting not only the functional needs but also providing an aesthetically pleasing landscape for visitors to enjoy.

To e x p l o r e t h e i m p l e m e n t a t i o n possibilities of this conceptual project, research has been conducted on several key structural elements. Th e proj ect f eatures a pro minen t spherical dome theater extending from the podium, which ser ves as a focal point. The structure of the theater utilizes steel tube supports, glass, and aluminum panels, creating a visually captivating and vibrant facade. The atrium incorporates reconfigurable spatial modules that are interconnected by metal stairs suspended from the sides. These metal stairs hang from five massive support columns on the inner side of the western facade, giving the illusion of floating in mid-air and forming a modern vertical pedestrian street. The project redefines the possibilities of office spaces, offering a seamless transition from the lush ground floor to the dynamic and flexible sky lobby. More than just a mere workplace, the building serves as a public connector, seamlessly integrating work and urban life, fostering a symbiotic relationship between the two. It creates a harmonious environment that empowers individuals with choices and autonomy, ensuring a balanced workplace experience.

Yuzhong District is the oldest and central area in downtown Chongqing, known for its tall buildings and high architectural density. It is also a popular destination for tourism and consumer activities, resulting in a dense population and a significant number of visitors.

However, the public spaces in this area are relatively small, and the overall atmosphere is outdated and somewhat negative.

Lifting the stacks above the podium. Adds garden space and porosity to city streets. Chamfers and folds increase light and air at street level.

The sunken plaza, surrounded by the building on three sides, introduces a green oasis in the bustling old town area. This open space ser ves as a breathing space and effectively accommodates the flow of people from the nearby western subway station and commercial complex. The interconnected podium volumes of th e two hig hrise buildings create an open and collaborative office environment.

In addition to excellent work spaces, the project provides space for unstructured time: a variety of platforms for reflection, inspiration and communication. The flexible concept of the sky lobby, coupled with an open and transparent skin, offers the building maximum opportunities to manifest itself as a public connector and make the invisible world of working a visible and engaging experience.

Summer 2022 Academic Work, Individual Work Site: Chongqing, China Instructor: Ying Huang; Yufei Zheng

Regeneration of a historical industrial site not only can restore a place, but also a spirit. A city’s industrial heritage should not become merely another consumer product in the post-industrial age. It should be rediscovered, highlighted and amplified to be a showcase of the city’s unique spirit and collective memory.

Over the years, the residential lifestyle on the site has changed from collective living to individual households in welfare and commercial housing, leading to the decline of the site. To bring back vitality, we need to develop a co-living model based on collaborative/interest communities

The site contains a variety of industrial remnants, including vague boundary equipment clusters, abandoned factories, distinct industrial buildings, and vacant office buildings. These remnants contribute to the site's unique character and historical background. Analyze the future potential of these preserved spaces and proceed with appropriate renovations, reconstructions, or demolitions.

The roads and terrain within the site are being reorganized, and the existing scattered industrial remnants undergo categorization and ren ovation . Sp eci alize d industrial buildings are preserved, structurally sound characteristic f a c t o r i e s a re t r a n s f o r m e d , abandoned factories and e q u i p m e n t a re d i s ma n t l e d , and unused buildings and sites with development potential are repurposed.

The project introduces a green oasis in the vibrant CBD district, revitalizing the area. By enhancing the urban pedestrian system, it activates the upper-level commercial spaces, alleviating congestion at ground level and creating more adaptable public spaces. The inclusion of pocket parks and roadside green areas provides breathing spaces, significantly enhancing the overall spatial quality and pedestrian experience.

The Liberation Monument area was once a vital cultural symbol and a vibrant public space. However, due to the high-density commercial and tourism developments, the area has suffered from the intense competition among property owners, leading to a negative and fragmented spatial condition.

The land use of the site primarily comprises retail, dining, enter tainment, office, and residential functions, with a total construction land area of approximately 52,768 square meters. The existing buildings will retain their original functional structure, with facade renovations being the main focus. The new constructions will primarily serve tourists, with office spaces as secondary functions.

Elevating the city's pedestrian system, revitalizing existing buildings, activating top-level businesses, and reducing ground-level pressures to create more flexible public spaces. Celestial street is not only a spatial tool to create good experience, but also a media carrying multiple public elements which indicates a spirit of a place. By integrating roof gardens with celestial streets, we can activate the roof spaces as a second ground floor, effectively stimulating foot traffic to top-level businesses through incentive mechanisms, thereby promoting interaction in the vertical dimension. With reduced pressure at ground level, we have the opportunity to create more flexible areas that can rebuild the relationship between public and private domains. Developing underground commercial spaces within green areas allows for a harmonious coexistence between public green spaces and commerc ial areas. Fur thermore, by incorporating shared s p ac es s u ch as ae ri al cor rid o r s, t he distinction between above-ground and underground becomes blurred.

In densely populated urban areas, the societal function, ecological attributes, and aesthetic presentation of pocket parks are of paramount importance. Vertical grassy areas provide both visibility and spatial differentiation, while also offering people a sense of shelter and shade. The sunken plaza introduces a green oasis in the bustling old town area. This open space serves as a breathing space and effectively accommodates the flow of people from the nearby western subway station and commercial complex.

In order to explore the practical application of sustainable materials in interior spaces, I researched and selected suitable recycled materials such as headphone wires, raincoats, and fabrics. By employing various weaving techniques, I integrated these materials into the structure of the stool.

A meticulously crafted 1:20 scale physical model accurately portrays the warmth and ambiance created by wooden interiors and subtle lighting effects. The central glass brick wall was constructed using organic glass panels, intricately cut and polished to replicate the semi-transparency of real glass bricks.
