Water Effect

| Forest Park Public Swimming Pool

Graduate Studio Fall 2016 Instructor | Chandler Ahrens Water is a liquid material that can transform between solid form of ice and gas form of steam. The different physical properties of each water form generate phenomenon both visually and environmentally. For example, visullay ice refract light and produce a distortion view. The distortion confuses the sense of the dimensions of space meanwhile ice create cold feeling of the space. Steam blurs the vision of object and creates a humid, warm environment. The liquid form of water both reflect and refract light, which produces different feeling of space when people are inside and outside of water.

1

The program is a public swimming pool which includes different quality of pools, steam sauna and an ice bar. Different phenomenon is created though the movement of building based on the three types of water. By creating these phenomenon, the building can attract people and promote communications of people inside building. The site is in forest park of St. Louis which is the second largest urban public park in United States. Sitting on a natural slope of a lake at the edge of the forest park, the building is hiding itself into the natural landscape but revealing the urban sense as well by reflecting view of surrounding buildings.

| Hospital Addition

With the development of technology, the joint field of biology and architecture has a promising future. Prototype of Artificial human skin has been recently manufactured by 3D bioprint technique. This project is to explore the application of a skin-function material in the field of medical laboratory and operation unit. The program of this project is an addition of medical laboratory and operation unit to an existing hospital. Human skin has a sophisticated structure and it functions with muscle and bone. Starting with a study of machine mechanism, skin material is attached to the designed machine similar to human muscle and bone which enable it to change shape and position. Through research on human skin’s property, a skin material operation table is designed in the operation unit that has blood transfusion ability along with skin walls which functions as air flirtation system.

Saint Stone City

| Big Block Berlin Housing

Graduate Studio Spring 2015 Instructor | Jan Ulmer Walking in the city of Berlin, people can feel the sense of emptiness. The emptiness comes from those empty spots that once were buildings destroyed by war. The contrast between traditional berlin block with tall, isolated buildings from East Berlin period deepens the emptiness. The emptiness needs to be recovered just like the sadness and pain needs to be healed in people’s memory. Saint. Stone City is a housing project near Moritzplatz in Berlin. Concept is to create a city within the block. A city with busy life, colorful life and cheerful life. The massing is designed as a castle which finish the traditional berlin block. The towers on the castle still contains the isolation character of the East Germany buildings. Courtyard is a critical feature of Berlin city. By designing them in different levels, light is brought in and views are varied. A path system connects all the housing “tower” within the “castle” and courtyards. The idea for the Housing unit is from the spiral idea. Half floor height stair forms a spiral movement within the housing unit to create a big, unite space. View and space are also organized by the spiral stair.

Curtain House

| Portable Beach House Graduate Studio Fall 2014 Instructor | Ersela Kripa

The 30-unit housing project used fabric curtain as the concept to explore how curtain can work with the architecture exterior and interior.

Model Photo

Fabric is choosen for the portable house design because it is a light and soft material. By changing the curtain position and shape, the house could be adjusted to different seasons. For example, with curtain opens up in summer, it functions as sun shading and increases natural air movement. While in winter, curtain closes the space to create a greenhouse space. The site is on a beautiful beach on the coast of Vlore, Albania. The idea of the curtain system comes from the dutch artist Theo Jansen, who made a machine called “sand beast. The exterior curtain is designed to take advantage of the wind on the site, as well as creating sunshading. The interior curtain is used as a lose division of the space.

Traveller House

| Duplex House

Graduate Studio Spring 2014 Instructor | SungHo Kim

The duplex house is designed for people love travelling. The concept is the housing unit can be moved to travel with people. Shipping Container is used as the housing unit. A crane structure is designed on top of the roof to move the container housing unit onto a truck. The container unit is modified for light and view. Two units are connected to form a full house. The exterior facade used perforated metal to bring light into the garden inside the house.
