CONTENTS This project discussed a study of new organization of working spaces for millennial who have less-identified self description, innovative idea and uncertain decisions. And how is the space related to the existing site conditions is also included.

Millennial Camps

Alley is everywhere in a city. But for the developed Chicago, they can be heavily ignored. To improve the back alley conditions, a theater could be a micro utopia which could help people realize the forgotten place and know their city better.

Alley Utopia

When People owning different interests living together ,they may be have conflicts with each other. But if they have same hobbies they could also have accidents when using spaces. For 2 owners who like parties , a fold house was designed.

Fold-Hub House

Energy is always a topic due to designers always purse a high effective architecture. however, it is always hard to represent the nature resources and energy saving for public. A gate for wind could be a symbol for public to understand resources.

Wind Gate

Dwelling for young artists is different from regular houses cause they don’t have stable income. While the renovation of Cheonggyechon shows a new possibility for city layers, an art corridor could create multiple layers helping artists.

Art Layers

Shoes always have similar form for foot to make people feel comfortable . Their forms are always following the shape of shoes. When architecture meets shoes design, the reaction of different design language could come out new revolution.

Arch Shoes

Other Architecture related design works are included .

—Temporary Work Ramp, Degree Project Site: St. Louis, Missouri, United States Instructor: Adrian Luchini

As increasing millennial have been the main career force, a new space organization is need to suit youth’s features. While millennial are chasing a less-identifed description of themselves, less functional and more variable use of space can be raised as their ‘Camps’. The site of a vacant space which is close to transportation hubs and university, allows the millennial to have a ‘field trip’ to communicate with the citizens and people who owns different ideas. Millennial could find what they are really interested in for their future career while enjoying the gathering events. Passerby could get new information of the generation and the city while enjoying the transfer ramp in the center of the city.

Alley Utopia —Floating Theater and City Observatory Site: Chicago, Illinois, United States Instructor: Philip Holden Chicago is a well developed but crowded city. However some city respects are ignored as the main road and flat facades obstruct roof, alley and infrastructures. Theater used to be a box. While ‘life and performance’ represents ‘real and unreal’, an alley could blur the limit. We like to peep a story happened in opposite building. So the gap between spaces emphasize ‘watch and happen’. In result, a gap between audience and stage makes itself, the alley, a micro utopia in the city. Moreover, unlike Chicago vertical raise city pattern, a horizontal island could reveal the infrastructures and take advantage of them. The Comparison between city scale and stage scale stories represents the relationship between city and individuals. Detail Section A

Fold-Hub House —2 Units House with Party Hub Site: St. Louis , Illinois, United States Instructor: Andrew Colopy The site is located between 2 residential houses in midtown of St. Louis. While the project is for 2 owners who both like gathering events and have lots friends, the public and privacy should both be considered for their activities and life. Folding is a physical behavior that turn the sides of objects. Just like different aspects for the owners daily life, ‘fold’ are always happening from noisy to quiet, alone to being together. Under the folding concept for their habitats, a folding strategy for the space organization was inspired. As the fold measure continues from the public gathering space to the private living spaces, this 2 units house represents a gradient from dynamic form to a static form.

Wind Gate —Wind Energy Research Center and Headquarter Site: Wellington, New Zealand Instructor: Pablo Moyano Skyscraper can always be a symbol for a city for its obvious vertical raise especially among the short buildings. Wellington, the Capital of New Zealand has the richest resource of wind energy for their prevailing N-S wind. To emphasize the most windy city, the wind turbines could tell people how is the nature resource can be taken advantage of. Stands beside the main entrance of the Wellington Harbor, this headquarter not only acts as a gate for wind to go through, but also a symbol gate for the city transportation at the city entrance. When the scale of turbines changes according to the wind force varieties, the architecture language of heavy and light alternatives. In this way, Wind Gate could also be a possible path from nature to architecture . Material Transition

Art Layers

—Young Artists Dwelling Corridor Site: Cheonggyecheon, Seoul, South Korea Instructor: Sungho Kim As more and more young artists lose their dwelling space in Seoul due to the development of the city, a new place is badly demanded for their life. Cheonggyecheon used to be a creek under highway bridge but it has been renovated as a culture passenger path which could be a best location for young artists to promote themselves and live. Cheonggyechon has its layers of business, commercial, transportation and culture corridor. While young artists have their own living ‘layers’ of basic demands, space for living and creating, chance to promotion and communication. While the Layers of this culture site provides young artists a chain of their living, the Art Layers itself also richen another layer for Cheonggyecheon.

Arch Shoes —Performance Enhancement Design Instructor: Chandler Ahrens In this class, students were asked to pick up different architecture elements from cases and develop their own measure of organize the space for foot. For the ‘Arch Shoes’, 3 cases representing surface, object and void were chosen. The surface case has its feature for overlap and force mutation. The Object case has its feature of the connections. And the void case emphasizes the negative space of cutting off a whole object. After Combination of 3 different elements, different parameters could change the whole geometry from different respects. After mutation from a cube to a pair of shoes, the form performs as a light floating shoes which wakes people’s imagination of walk on cloud.
