Type / Residential project Location / Old Street, London Area / 110 sq.m It is a three-storeys flat with two bedrooms, mezzanine and separated kitchen space by entrance. To maximize the space and bring natural light into this drak flat, we have got rid off the existing partition wall of kitchen and expanded the island to dinning area that make the use of space even more flexible. Moreover, we have played with the ceiling height and put in an oversized bookshelf, which looks like a floating feature within two levels.

National Collegiate Spatial Design Competition 2011 “CO-EXIST
INSPIRATION
The brief is to create a new architectural massing on the assigned site which had been used as a brewery. Accoding to the topic, Co-exist, the design needs to respond to the surrounding context and the buidling itself. Participants are free to site their projects anywhere in the building, but the total area of new architectural massing has to in between 700 sq m to 1000 sq m.
On Djemaa el Fna square in Marrakech, shows can happen at anywhere anytime - peddlers, snake charmers and story tellers have playing their shows and doing their bussiness in the area circled by yellow line painted on the ground. Inspired by this kind of flexible pattern, the design aims to create a new form of performance by breaking the boundaries which are the distance between performers and audiences and the frame of stage.

[ Minor Elements ] To practice the principle, which is to conserve existing condition of the brewery, some comparatively minor elements- mirror, wooden flooring and lighting - are installed at the selected spots. These elements meet performers’ basic needs for rehearsal and performance, they not only provide practical functions but also possibilities for interection to occur among people.

“ Life, a carrier of art ” Bringing art into alleys where locals’ life is truly based at and let it grow in people’s daily life. Also, the design try to build up the primary relationship within artist and viewer.
SITE The site is situated at the central of Taipei city. The neighborhood represets a typical urban pattern of Taipei which reveals two differents appearences of the city. You can find big-scaled department store buildings on main streets, but move to the back alleys, there are residentail buildings less than five-story, also many small- business designer shops are operating.

“Non-place” described by French anthropologist, Marc Augé, quoted from his book ’Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity. Nowadays, the pursuing of standardization and high-efficiency hides the characteristics of the spaces, and makes them as duplication of each others. Undeniably, most of us have experienced waiting at a station; however, do you have any memories about those periods? Corresponding with the definition of a non-place (Augé 1995), for travellers, the train station is a transient space, which is neither here nor there.

In order to provide a better travelling process, the deisgn aim to create a comfortable waiting environment; renovate existing gallery space to a cultural platform where visitors can get in touch with the locality of Edinburgh. Finally, the building combines a waiting space, tourist information, bookshop, café and a new gallery called Gallery Underneath.

A new intersection in the gallery is a pedestrian ramp that slopes down from the street level to the platform of Waverley Station. For traveller with luggage, who concerns accessibility in a space, the ramp makes them able to wander freely in the building. This intersection is not only a mode of circulation through the site, it provide new spatial conditions for programmatic functions, visual connections, and entry.

Boxes Every month, there are about fifty art related events happen in Edinburgh. However, it is easy to ignore if people don’t receive the information about them. The superiority of location has a potential for spreading local information. Three boxes connected to the ramp act as transmitters and advertisements of the art activities, which currently happen in Edinburgh. Due to the limited height within box and floor, I intended to shrink the volume of the box with a more simple and light structure.
