MUSEUM OF EMOTIONS

IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO LIVED THROUGH COVID-19

Time: 03/2023-05/2023 Instructor: Anxiao Zhang Academic Individual Work

Hubei China

Sited at the abandoned Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital, the design aims to reimagine the once intensive care area as a museum of emotions. As the first isolation centre to be built in the world's first city to experience a major outbreak of Covid-19, this place holds too many memories. Although the pandemic has passed, people's emotions should not be forgotten. Therefore, the project extracts people's unforgettable emotions during Covid-19 and dramatically transforms them into

exhibition spaces that serve as a reminder of this overwhelming experience. The design uses architecture as a primary tool to create emotional states through spatial scale, flow, furniture fixtures, colour, lighting and material choices. Accordingly, the project translates six relatively distinct moods, subdivided into nine blocks under the 'complicated' mood, to recreate the conditions people experienced during the pandemic.

CULTURAL TRANSLATION OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY

Time: 06/2023-08/2023 Instructor: Zhihao Wang Academic Individual Work

China

Located on the shore of Didang Lake in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, China, the design originates from the cultural translation of the traditional Chinese calligraphy work Lanting Preface. The character " 之 ", which is the most frequent, varied and symbolic in the calligraphic Zhejiang work, is extracted and extended and varied at the spatial level. From the high-rise building to the podium, and even the site landscape, the character " 之 " shows

different spatial articulations, which fill the whole space with a flowing and curved water mood, and integrates with the vibe and scenario of the Lanting Preface. This project is not only an architectural translation of the character " 之 ", but also a representation of the traditional calligraphy culture behind it, aiming to let more people understand, pass on and develop forward this fading culture.

02-REASONS FOR CHOOSE

WANG XIZHI The GREATIST Calligrapher in Chinese History

group IV Settling across the river due to the war, he travelled and studied calligraphy

After meeting at the Lanting, he decided to give up his post and settled in SHAOXING

The greatest work of calligraphy - the world's first running script Lanting Preface - was written here. Wang Xizhi's Lanting Preface is a classic in the history of Chinese calligraphy and an important part of Shaoxing culture

The Lanting Preface is Wang Xizhi's masterpiece. The penmanship is a combination of square and round, rigid and soft, both rigorous and ethereal, which is said to be the work of Wang Xizhi after he was drunk. After waking up, Wang Xizhi wrote quite a few more, but none of them could restore the charm of the first creation, and no one can match it to this day.

The translation and reorganisation of the charac ter " 之 " is the most impor tant par t of the design. The charac ter " 之 " is broken down into 4 par ts, corresponding to 4 kinds of strokes, each sweeping in a different direction, iterated multiple times. Group 1 was chosen because it creates a rich space in the generative process while maintaining the form of " 之 ". As a sectional unit, Group 1 has the most space running through it in a three-dimensional view and creates the richest space and possibilities.

The ground floor podium is also a translation of the word " 之 " embedded in the plan.

Imagine a landscape where building sites are intertwined with zig-zag slopes and mirrored by flowing water. Different experiences are offered at different elevations, with each season offering its own unique perspective. The changing seasons provide a rich and varied experience of the dynamic beauty of nature and its harmonious integration with the architectural elements.

CITY IMPRINT A HISTORICAL AND EDUCATIONAL URBAN ACTIVITY CENTRE FOR ALL AGES Time: 01/2023-02/2023 Instructor: Zhihao Wang Academic Individual Work

UK Sheffield

Located by River Don, Sheffield, this project aims to transform an old warehouse selling planting equipment into a place that carries the memory of the city. On the premise of River Don is famous for its otter sightings, and the site is adjacent to an indoor children's playground, children and otters have become the focus of design. This project aims to serve as a link that tightly connects Sheffield's past and future, which will be remembered by generations. From reading space to climbing net,

from handicraft workshop to exhibition space, Sheffield's history is unknowingly understood and passed down as children explore the architecture. Meanwhile, the outdoor ponds and underwater pillars ensure that otters are not affected during migration. Another design focus is the embodiment of water elements. The undulating accessible roof and balcony facade are connected in a wavy pattern, making the connection between the architecture and the site even stronger.

02-SHEFFIELD CUTLERY CULTURAL HISTORY

The project is located by the Don River, with convenient transportation and a number of educational and sporting places for children. The ecological environment is also ideal, with otters, water voles, butterflies, birds and fishes passing through whilst there is a risk of flooding.

Sheffield is renowned for its steel, and cutlery making has led to the development of steel craftsmanship towards culture and art. The city's unique cutlery culture can be experienced in the project's exhibition space and workshops.

06-SITE PLAN As a renovation project, the building maintains the original contour and number of floors of the building, and retains the original indoor children's playground on the east side of the site. This project has re-planned the site landscape, adding humanized roads, greenery, and ponds, giving users the opportunity to observe otters at close quarters without disturbing their resting place. Meanwhile, to minimise the risk of flooding, water permeable paving materials are used to keep outdoor activities as undisturbed as possible.

08-INTERIOR RENDERING This image shows the use of the exhibition space, with immersive projections being used for historical experiences.

This picture shows the effect of using the cafe, from which one can take a short break.

This picture shows the reading space, with sleek bookcases that allow children to weave in and out, creating a lively place to read. It's also a great place for parents to take a break.

The workshop is a great way to experience Sheffield's cutlery culture, where children can design and make unique pieces of cutlery under the guidance of an artist.

This image shows the otters travelling and resting on submerged pillars with organic holes and algae.

This picture shows the greenery and use of the accessible roof, which is a great place to get close to nature.

The indoor bazaar on the ground floor of the building is where people can buy plants, seeds and growing tools. Sometimes there are seminars to teach people how to plant.

Indoor climbing is the continuation of the original children's play function, children can climb directly from the ground floor to the first floor of the exhibition room, increasing the fun of learning.

Hainan

Located at a mysterious vacation latitude of 18 ° N, the water city of Lingshui Lagoon in Hainan, China, consisting of over 400 fishing boats, contains a long history and culture. The boat-dwelling Dan families living here refer the fishing rafts their home and are known as "sea gypsies". Fishing rafts are a type of housing that combines aquaculture and daily life, becoming an important cultural carrier for the Dan family. In order to improve the quality of life of the Dan people and create a

sustainable eco-community, this design respects the local lifestyle while attracting more business possibilities to create a water community with identity and cultural output. The project provides spatial transformation and industrial upgrading of the existing Dan community, and plans for the next 20 years of development, while taking into account the sustainable needs of rainwater collection, sewage drainage, environmental protection and energy saving.

Known as water dwellers, the ancestry originated from deserters who were forbidden to go ashore, the Dan family has long lived on the sea as their home. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, their ancestors came to Hainan from the mainland, who learnt to drive boats on the water, migrating everywhere with the fish and shrimp flood season, diving pearls and shellfish, casting nets and fishing, and cultivating the sea to make a living. The above diagrams show the form of residence and business of the boat-dwelling families, as well as the social background and the corresponding portraits of the people.

After careful analyses of the living habits of boat-dwelling families, many problems are in urgent need of improvement. 1. Reinforcement of the building: the fishing rafts are as fragile as eggshells after years of fighting with the wind and waves. 2. Clean water: the quality of drinking water is worrying and there is no sewage treatment plant. 3. Facilities: there is a need for schools, hospitals, cultural facilities, seafood farming and marketing areas.

Lian Town

The Government has begun to remove fishing rafts to protect the environment for following reasons: 1. Demolish aquaculture net cages: feed that has not been eaten is scattered on the seabed for years, gradually pollute the sea water. 2. Remove white foam boxes: Over-dense and disorderly farming is a serious pollution for the sea.

With the deepening of coastal tourism development on Hainan Island, the lifestyle of Dan's family has begun to change and they are striving to integrate into the modern world. The new fish raft building incorporates rainwater harvesting and solar energy conversion systems to reduce energy consumption. The patchwork unit-intergrated design ensures that the fish rafts are easy to assemble, facilitating the expansion and development of the community.

05-COMMUNITY PLAN FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS

2024 to 2028: Residential Building Renovation. Multiple residential buildings surrounding or semi-enclosed by small fish farms form the basic community unit.

2034-2038: Planning for large-scale fish farms. Regularising unregulated fishing and aquaculture will alleviate the environmental problems caused by fish food deposits and the original foam tanks, as well as generating income.

2029-2033: School construction. Children left behind are given access to education, which also provides jobs and mitigates population loss to some extent.

2039 to 2043: Design of entertainment venues. Shopping malls enable residents to share their psychological needs more frequently and closely, contributing to the harmony and development of the community.
