Century Avenue Connection between Lujiazui and Century Park. This area was planned to be the Shanghai's largest financial and trade zone. However, due to the gap among functional area, utilization of public space is very low. It becomes "empty city" "dead city" during the night. The current users, in addition to walking through the white - collar workers, mainly for the elderly residents living around. The site we chose is located near the central green area of the triangle green belt. It is at a point of contradiction. First, from the activities of the timetable can be seen around the triangular green features a single, almost all commercial buildings, activities, more time blank. Second, away from the residential area, residents are less active here. Third, the lowest utilization rate of public space, has been very few people went in. Last is a serious pedestrian traffic problems, red light for a long time, the intersection often stranded waiting.

Objective

The Envisioning Future Smart Sustainable City is an urban system design competition which aims for laying out a framework for future smart sustainable cities. The competition engages multidisciplinary student teams to devise solutions for different urban systems, making use of Covestro’s smart materials and products, and then integrate these solutions to deliver a comprehensive development program for the prototype design of Covestro City within a neighborhood scale site.

REST AREA Follow the green slope slowly then enter the upper floor. Equipped with tree house, tables and chairs, the platform is in the forest in the sea. The harmony between man and nature creates a new urban image and takes full advantage of the vertical space to create the view.

CO-WORKING SPACE The concept to of "field office" wants to create a connection between the natural and worker. Open and comfortable office environment can inspire more ideas. Regular lectures, workshops and other activities would happen in the underground museum space. The system grants funds for the maintenance and management of water treatment systems, ground source heat pump systems and solar systems by renting the office space.

RAIN GARDEN There are several water gardes in different size to purify the water and reduce runoff pollution. They also formed a resident-friendly environment. This area weakened the bundaries between functional areas.

COMMUNITY MUSEUM The community musuem on the ground shows geographic information such as local distribution of soil species and water quality. By exhibitions and lectures, the concept of sustainability would be brought into the community's education. You can also learn the working process of the water collection and water treatment system with introduction by the staff.

Problem Statement

The unsupporting physical environment, exclusive social environment and undeveloped cultural environment are hindering residents’ adaptation to the community of Jing Lao Yuan. The residents don‘t have purpose in their lives and they are only waiting to die some day. Constricted ways of thinking make it hard to change the situation for better.

“Agravity” The idea comes from the flowing water. With the parametric language to express the ups and downs of the surface, combine the natural intention into the modern architecture. The organic space created by the ups and downs can be used as the main activity space.
