The Exploration of Spatial Memory and Genius Loci [Spirit of place]

In the process of knowing European architects, I was influenced by the historical tradition, geographical features and humanistic feelings of their works. Rafael Moneo's architectures create the sense of time through the memory of history, yet this memory is confronted with the mission of the contemporary world. Through his unique design theory and technique, Carlo Scarpa makes his architectural creation highly personalized and strongly historical, which makes people deeply appreciate the unique regional complex. The architects of "Porto School", such as Alvaro Siza, Fernando Távora and Eduardo Souto de Moura, continue to explore the relationship between society, nature, culture and architecture. Their work focuses on establishing a deep connection between modern design and historical environment, which makes the architecture with its personality trait and the keen grasp of sociocultural change. After years of reading and learning, I expect to be able to build a similar perception of architecture as these architects. In September 2018, during the renovation design of hangzhou shuangliu cement factory, I lived around the site for two weeks, visited the cement factory and the surrounding 5km area, and measured the existing buildings on the site. I was impressed by the special spatial memory and Genius Loci here. I continued to explore special sites, including war-bombed ruins, chaotic market, and natural villages. I hope to explore the possibilities of architecture from the perspective of urbanism, history and culture. This is the main reason for me to define this portfolio as from site to place, which allows me to explore other cultures with the help of architecture.

I strongly believe that architectural design should establish a deep connection between the historical environment and the sophisticated urban features. With the rapid technological development, the building extensions and transformation, restoration and enhancement will become the capability that future architects need to master. Therefore, i think that the architect's job is not to invent, but to interpret, continue and develop the social culture through the architecture. I hope to continue to find the relationship between architecture and site, and explore spatial memory and genius loci conveyed by architecture, so as to pave the way for my career as an architect.

"The architects do not invent anything, rather, they transform reality." ——Álvaro Siza Vieira

For more than half a century which is in China’s rapid develoment, industrial buildings have emerged in an endless stream. With the transformation of regional industry, many industrial buildings have been abandoned and forgotten. It is a pity that the memories of a generation, a village and a city are disappearing. With decades of mining history, hangzhou shilong mine relies on limestone and marble to support a large number of factories, including the shuangliu cement factory which covers an area of 54,943 ㎡ and a building area of 64,365.08 ㎡ .Ten years after the factory became a business incubator in 2008, I started working on the site.In order to retain the memory of the space and restore the spirit of the place, I tried to translate the production line space of the cement factory: to retain the original spatial form as much as possible, and put in new functions. The mine relics, office campuses and artistic atmosphere were fully overlapping as "Art Commune at the foot of Shilong Mine".

I was exploring the organization and expression of the production line space of the cement factory, and the study of these existing relations also promoted the transformation of the whole building complex.Considering the special historical identity and geographical characteristics of the mine site where the buildings are located, I hope my design can respond to the site. Therefore, I interweave some contextual factors, including historical and geomorphic fragments, to give them a new order and express them through "new production line space" to complete the "translation" of "cement production line space".In

HISTORY NARRATOR The Monument Of War And History In Aleppo, Syria Individual Work Tutor: Luojia Xu, Liwei Yang Location: Site of Grand Serail, Aleppo, Syria 36°11’50.45”N, 37° 9’46.37”E Height: 40m, Area: 21,809.65 ㎡ Time: Spring 2019

"Monument has nothing to do with scale, but lies in the identifiability of design and the meaning of form." ——Jorge Oteiza

Monuments have existed since the dawn of human civilization. To resist death, the pyramids appeared in Egypt. To commemorate the victory, the Column of Trajan appeared in Rome. To pursue freedom, the Statue of Liberty appeared in New York. With the development of architectural design, the menument is no longer just a huge symbol, but a memorial place composed of human behaviors and commemorative space. The ancient city of aleppo, as a collision of eastern and western civilizations, had faced the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, Mongols, Mamluks and Ottomans during thousands of years, and left some magnificent architectural heritage, including Aleppo Citadel. In 1999, Aleppo formed a cultural tourism area around the ancient city with the Citadel as the center. The Site of Grand Serail, in front of the Citadel, which was hit by gunfire during the Syrian civil war in 2018, is now a vacant lot. When Syria is at peace, there could be an overlap of history, war, memory and emotion. The new monument, with the citadel, mosques, churches, museums, and the local souks, will become the narrator of history.

SITE BACKGROUND

SITE HISTORY: FROM ASSYRIA TO SYRIA 15th Century B.C, Assyrian Empire

ALEPPO

395 A.D, Byzantine Empire

is an ancient trading city in northern Syria, a country with a thousand years of civilization that has recently been under fire. Aleppo play an important role between the Euphrates river and the Mediterranean Sea, so merchants of the Silk Road started or ended their journeys in its shadow, bringing silk from China, frankincense from Oman and olives to Byzantium.

is one of the remarkable examples of military architecture in the Middle East; it represents a unique cultural heritage for the quality of the architecture and for the complexity of the historical stratifications. The Citadel was to encounter the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, Mongols, Mamluks and Ottomans, but the Citadel’s monumental grandeur is largely the work of the Ayyubids in the 13 th century.

SITE ANALYSIS Vuene Atmosphere

The site is a tourist zone around Aleppo Citadel, including mosques, churches, museums, shopping malls and restaurants. The site was originally a hotel and may now exist as a monument.

Vuene Connection

The site is directly south of Aleppo Citadel, adjacent tomosques and the buildings with internal sunken courtyard destroyed during the war.So, this design should respond to other buildings.

BUILDING INTENTION Vuene Skyline

Aleppo Citadel is the tallest building in the city, standing 50m high. The surrounding buildings are all below 10 meters in height. So the design should strike a balance within a height limit.

"I shape reality, I shape the atmosphere of the environment in space, I shape what ignites our perception" ——Peter Zumthor

I was exploring how traditional symbols could be used unconventionally, with perfectly symmetrical squares and circles being reinterpreted in this monument. On the site where history, war, memory and emotion are interwoven, we should build an architecture that is both classical and modern. Through various space designing methods (reproduction, rotation, symmetry, folding and hollowing-out) of different geometric forms such as square, circle, diamond, arch and helix, a rich spatial experience is created.

Entrance

This monument and all its history and location constitute a new “place” in an architectural ambience of magnificent castles, grand mosques, delicate churches, and markets of life. From "site" to "place", I have completed the intention of architectural design.

MARKET THEATER The Extension of Collective Housing in Shanghai Tutor: Lifeng Lin Team Work with Yifei Sun, Shuyi Lin Responsible for Concept 70%, Research 60%, Modeling 60% etc. All The Showing Drawings For This Project Entirely By Yingying Zheng Location: Sitang Pedlars' Market, Worker Village in Shanghai, China 31°20'34.89"N, 121°27'43.07"E Height: 18m, Length: 500m, Area: 12,398.75 ㎡ Time: Summer 2019 The Exhibition Project In Haven Exhibition Rac Studio Young Design Pioneer

"Cities and buildings are not static, but dynamic processes like biological metabolism." ——Metabolism Architecture In 1958, China started the construction of workers' villages. Sitang village, built 60 years ago, is one of them. At that time, workers' village housing was influenced by the soviet collective housing, with several families sharing the kitchen and bathroom, and only one bedroom for each family. As a result, there is a growing conflict between a rapidly growing population and a shortage of land. In 1994, people nearby filled up the river to make more space, and built shanties along the 500-meter-long river, gradually forming the more than 10,000 square meters of sitang market. New communities have been created and the area has become more crowded. In the area 15km away from shanghai, there is still a high population density similar to the city center, as high as 36,700 people /k ㎡ , 1.5 Times as much as the center of beijing and 3 times as much as the center of tokyo, and the number of building floors is less than 6. Therefore, people have to continue to occupy public green space, public roads to obtain more space for use. In order to liberate the life of the people in the community from cramped space, sitang market has become an entension of the community life. This project focuses on the extension of community and the evolution of place. A new ” market theater“ should be here. The element that forms space will become movable "stage property". Space is stage, and life is drama.Community residents can customize their own plays on this stage: trading fairs, community libraries, mobile offices, youth activity rooms, public bathrooms and so on.

Each zone is surrounded by a 50cm wide clockwise orbit. Its interior is made up of stretchable brackets supporting 3mX3m unit modules, thus forming a constantly evolving building —— Market Theater.

The unit module of the building is 3mX3m, with builtin water and electricity pipes, and the required space is composed by a folding frame and different panels (which can form doors, Windows, walls, etc.).Different panels can be turned over to form cabinets, tables, workstations, etc. Other furniture can be brought by the user or transferred from the transit station.

——Kisho Kurokawa in 1958 In the chaos of the market, I tried to design buildings in a new way. After studying some theory of the Metabolisms, I was inspired to introduce the concept of time into cities and buildings.

Kurokawa proposed "Transition from the Age of the Machine to the Age of Life". Now, in my exploration, Architecture becomes the extension of life, enriching people's life in the carrier of machine.

The building should grow and change organically within a complete system. Therefore, we designed the whole building as a system that can be stored and transported. The folding units make up the space people need, assembling and disassembling in this system. Half a century ago, Kisho

NATURE REFUGE Hope Dental Center Rwanda Clinic & Training Institute Individual Work Tutor: Manus Leung Location: Umutekano Village, Gasabo District, Kigali, Rwanda 30°3'57"E, -1°55'54"S Building Height: 10.6 m, Area: 4367.27 ㎡ Time: Spring 2020 Shortlisted in Rwanda Clinic International Competition

"Landscape and architecture are united to create buildings that are intimately connected to place and time." ——Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigemand Ramon Vilalta (RCR Arquitectes)

Hope dental center, also called rwanda clinic and training institute, is located in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. The building is on a hillside with a fifth of the slope surrounded by forests. It is divided into four parts: the clinic, the training center, the supply company, and the accommodation area, which are distributed along the stairs. Each building has a courtyard to collect rainwater and all the functions are arranged around the courtyard. The four buildings enclose a larger courtyard in the middle for lectures, parties, parties and other activities. The building is framed in reinforced concrete. The floors, walls and roof are formed as pure building elements and poured from the same earth-like red coloured concrete – honed for internal floors and ground and sandblasted for walkway walls and soffits – giving the overall structure a monolithic appearance.

Based on a deep understanding of traditional architecture and the real society, we should reject the pure functionalism form of modernism theory and dogmatism, and refuse to deal with the site in a single mode. On the other hand, we should also reject the style-oriented "national traditional house". In the design process, I looked forward to recreating the traditional form in a modern way, creating a quiet and elegant dental clinic and training center in the forest.
