SPACE SECTION RUBBING IMAGINATION MATERIALS FOLDING DRAWING
IMAGINATION STUDIO
Program: Academic Research Individual work (2015 Fall)
PHASE 1:
Everything starts with rubbing. Instead of rubbing a real stuff, I decided to “rub” my mind. Rubbing helps me understand the details of material and reality. By writing down several things happened in a specific period of my life again and again, I noice some thing interesting: new details of my memory keep pop up, something keep missing, and by choosing different words, I have different feelings when I read what I wrote. One question raised, What is reality? So I putted on masks over my memory to emphasis uncertainty.
(Writing, ink and paper, 80”x 36”)
I-1
(Light and shadow within words, plastic paper and foamcore, 36”x24”x10”)
This is an exploration, not just about reality, material and space, but also about conflict, time and myself. I rubbed my mind to face the reality, however, the only thing I tried to hide, at the end, is the fact about myself. Those unreadable letters carried my intentional forgetfulness. I supposed to be an actor in this scene, playing other people’s life. No one could not tell what is real, because I will be the author of my scripts. Unfortunately, I failed. The work you are looking at now is exact “me”, my mind, my body, my breath, during that period when I was writing myself down. The conflict between fact and the fact I imaged became a fertile earth where only truth can root deeply. Overlap of time generates delusion which invite me to a void with nothing, with everything. I enjoy the chaos of my mind, and also appreciate that language tries to organize everything. Orders may bring in light, chaos will bring in air. The space between orders and chaos is where architecture happen.
PHASE 2
After I realized my memory is not accurate, so do my writing, I feel lost. I followed my feeling and translate it into the first object. Structure covered with plaster, but light still could go through solid. Light brings in air and brings in space into this solid as well.
(Floating letters, plaster and plastic bars, 6”x6”x6”)
(Light and Air, plaster and plastic bars, 8”x8”x8”)
(Force of Air, plaster, 6”x6”x4.5”)
Only focusing on space, I could feel the strength of light and air. It is a fight between plaster and air.

PHASE 3
I am looking for a th ea tr e, with delightful appearance and grieved heart, with intoxicated behavior and roseate mind. Audience will never be sober in a theatre, for he lives and suffers in the midst of these scenes, experiencing its dreams with deep enjoyment and a sense of delightful necessity. People is no longer audience, he becomes an actor, performing his life.
(Drawing, paper and charcoal, 120’”x90”)

PHASE 4
Based on the epic drawing in phase 3, I built this architectural section model. It is a circulation space connecting six different spaces. As I mentioned in narrative, I am looking for a theatre condition project. When we talk about theatre, it is about see and be seen. Does it matter where the show be played? Is stage is necessary? I would doubt it. So based on theatre condition, I would agree that in my project, shows could happen everywhere. (Section model of Drawing, museum board, 42”x12”x12”)

From writing to casting then went back to drawing and end up a 3D spatial model, I noticed that I'm travel between 2D and 3D. I'd like to keep this conversation. I wrapped the 3D model with 0.5" width strips (Section model operation, 0.5" paper strips)
PHASE 5
(M=mountain fold; V=valley fold)
I picked a part of the image about, and turn it into crease pattern.
Start from four parallel strips, due to the crease pattern, it has been folded into a spatial constructure.
I-4
(Folding code, paper strips, 38x18)
By unwrapping those strips, I found this 2D picture carries as much inforamtion as the section model.
This spatial constructure turned into a circulation space, however, I believe, it could be simplier.
PHASE 6
Listen to the material. As paper folding is a inspiring structure system, I decided start with a simple unit
Elevation of two strips constructure
Light comes through the gap between this two parallel strips because of the creases
Two-storey prototype could be designated into different functional space
First Floor Plan (right) I developed the prototype above into a tectonic strcuture. With smaller strips, light could go through the gap between each units. Three open space could work as three individual performance space. All of them shares one main circualtion system and muiltipla backstage storage.

CHOICES CIRCULATION PREFABRICATE PARTICIPATION GREEN SPACE SCRIPTS PEDESTRIANS
GE NEIGHBORHOOD DESIGN STUDIO Program: Neighborhood design Group work with Leonie Chan (2015 Spring)
STAGE 0
STAGE 1
To encourage residents to particapate in design process, we designed a typology diagram form to play with. There are forty different types of space about green, water and parking. Our main concept is to customize this project. To simulate working process, we wrote a python script to help us generate as many combinations as possible. Then the results is the pool we choose from. section.python import random def finished ( inputsection): countFull = 0 for area in inputsection: if len(area)>=5: countFull = countFull+1 if countFull >=3: return True else: renturn False for c in range (200): section = [ ] for i in range (20): section. append ([ ]) while not finished(section): positionToFill = random. randint(0,13) valueToFillIn = random. randint(1,40) if len(section[positionToFill])<5: section[positionToFill]. append(valueToFillIn) print section (Instruction (left) : We numbered all possible space diagram on the right upper corner. Then, python script helps us to re-organize those diagrams into various combination. We would like to test as many combination as possible to discorver new urban plan principle.)

STAGE 3
Considering about pratical problem and economic issue, here is one of the combinations we ended up with. Then we translated diagram into architectural section, however, how could we generate plan with this principle?
G-4
STAGE 4
Starting with section only is a problem, we could not ignore the gap between plan and section. As a result, we decided to apply those types on plan as well.
Street store could help improve conversation between green and urban
Vertical green and underground parking with green cover give pedestrians more green views

Green space drawing Potential upground green space Ground green space Vertical transportation
By playing with scales, and respond to the context, we located three center places within our site, one is closed to the northen street, one is right at the center, and one is located at the southen end. Several paths cut through this site, but thanks to the green space, we connected those together by developing vertical green area both inside and outside the buildings.
It is easy to tell, the final master plan looks different from last page. We keep the main zoning principle, but develop it into a much more walking friendly scale project. We encourage people to walk through the site and find their own secret spots. We hope everyone could feel welcome in this new neighborhood.

COLUMN-PLATES STRUCTURE GREEN SPACE Emphasing horizontal floors and use vertical green space to glue those floors into a integrity. First three floors work as public space, we build a green slope to string together all functional space. The rest four floors are ofice, where each company could choose their own pre-fabricated openings.
To follow our customization concept, we turned this office buildings into platecolumn structure, which means we provided twelve opening options, so people working inside could choose.

GE NEIGHBORHOOD DESIGN STUDIO Program: Underground exhibition place Individual work (2015 Spring)
Concept is using minimum intervention to create a public play area for both children and adults. Roof is ground level, so it could be utilized as a regular playground. The north part connect with central platform and south part could be used as a outdoor theatre. It is a underground exhibition place with two entrance, In the place, there are three different themes to work as diverse backgrounds for different art works. One is about light, one is about water sound, and one is about landscape.

PERFORMANCE CIRCUALTION MIRROR SPACE LINE SURFACE TECTONICS
MAKING OF DESIGN PRICINPLE Program: Performance place Individual work (2013 Fall) CAGE STUDY

CONCEPT
CONCEPT WITHIN SITE
(How to define two space s with line and surface)
(Site panorama, Height is 24 ft)
CONCEPT EVOLUTION
Project starts with a cage. I use strings, surface, and structure to define a cube within the cage
This is a exploration I worked on at the very beginning. Starting with lines, it is a discussion about how to define space. To my surprise, there is no need to define a space, because space is everywhere. When we use pencil to drawing, No line, No surface, it is all about Space.
A line cuts through the site. Because program is performance place, I organized users’ routes into two individual spaces, one for actors, and one for audiences. There is a conflict between those two group, but also intersections happened at the entrance and stage. So a multiple layered spatial circulation system is the main idea I pursued in this project.
P-1
P-2 FINAL MODEL
Porject has been developed from a conceptual scenario into a complicated design by adding redundent space. I re-thinked my concept and decided to develop the middle structure wall into a double layer circulation space. Working on tectonics helps me unify those piece together.
Minimized the entrance space and enlarged the performance space, I emphasis the two functional space in this project, one is performance place, one is circulation space. “8” shaped circulation divided space into two part automatically, audiences and performers, so that they could get access to the performance space without go through each others’ paths. However, there is a cross point where they could see each other and just watch. I believe, as a perfermance space, show should not just happen on the stage, but also in this whole space. Be audience of each other will be a good experience to create an atmosphere. (There are two left-over spaces, one at the entrance, one closed to the performance place. Those inner gardens give users a different view aspect to experience the exterior of this building.)

ELEVATION RIVER CONNECTION CONTEXT NORTH END FRAME-VIEW PEDESTRIAN
NORTH END URBAN DESIGN PRICINPLE Program: Residential buildings Individual work (2014 Fall)
SITE
My site is located in North end, a historic neighborhood in Boston. Concept is keeping the oringinal context and improve the communication between this neighborhood and Charles river.
I divided whole site into two parts because of Commercial street. One has been designed into historic style and scale buildings to respond to the historic context, one fefers to afordable housing project, constructing a good gethering place at the river bund.
It’s a afordable residential project. I chose double-load corridr to fit in more units with shared public space
CONCEPT
U-1
I’d like to generate a pedestrians friendly experience to help residents communicate with each other and travellers experience both history and river bund. Muiltiple sky gardens are left because some units have been rotated towards main views of North end. Serveral various size open spaces on the way from North end to the river.
Sky-bridges connect three residential buildings together
An exploded drawing to show the waved shape facade and how the sky bridge works inside of the building.
Two paths, orange and yellow lead people to experience this new residential area. One path starts at the river bund, and one starts at the historic neighborhood. Views keep changing on your way to your destination. However, the main idea will follow you, the view of history and view of beautiful riverbund.
(Master plan and standard plan)
U-2 I would agree that Frame work is a key point here. Compared to show the whole picture at once, I prefer to design a frame for each nice view, and help pedestrians walk through my project with surprise.

SAGAM HOSPITAL THIRD FLOOR RENOVATION Program: Resting place Group work with industrial design students (2015 Spring)
INTRODUCTION
AIHT project is a cooperation between Sagam, Kenya and MIT hospital. There is a three storey building and first two floor are completed. The third floor need to be re-design into a rest place for doctors and lecture place for local medical students. A clear seperation between private and public is needed and meanwhile, public place should be flexible so that when there is no students, doctors could use that space.
PROPOSAL 1
Add one more entrance at right so that public and private can have seperated entrance. And desiign a open space in the middle where everyone could enjoy the wonderful nature view and this space could be a functional transit space. Foldable furniture in the lecture space. Once there is no students, all desk and chairs could be storaged in the movable circle space and this curved wall could be used as bench.
H-1 PROPOSAL 2
Use curved wall to push and pull spaces into different function rooms. No doors or dividers are needed. And curved wall generate interesting experience for users. All kinds of space are wrapped by several simple wall which could be turned into shelves, covered by local cloths products and local hand-made metal artifacts.

Innovation Lab
Program: RISD Auxiliary Facilities Group work (2015 Fall) This is a school facility with various programs. Labs are faculty and students only and other program, such as lecture hall and library are open to public. We designated labs on higher floors, from 3F to 8F, and open first three storeys to public. By shrinking the footprint gradually from top to bottom, we leave more ground space for padestrians and hoping people will feel be welcomed. This is a course focusing on technoical drawings and documentation
ELEVATION AND FACADE
Because of the form of our building, we design a facade modular unit to provide various experience for both users and pedestrians.

SECTION AND DETAILS Structure of the buidling is made of two independent systems. One is concrete core located at the southern part of the building, including stairs cases, elevators and restrooms. One is facade steel frame. These two systems are connected by steel limbs and the gap in between become a part of ventilation system.
We choose to follow the princinple of doublelayer facade to encourage natural ventilation. Meanwhile the space between two layers is creating a great view of our unique building form when you look down throught the ventilation place.

THESIS PLAYFUL SCALE ONGOING ORIGAMI SIMULATION OPERATION
ORIGAMI ARCHITECTURE (excerpts) Program: Thesis project Individual work (2016-now)
EXCEPTION
METHODOLOGY
Paper, generally speaking, is an anisotropic material, its structure characteristic is related to the direction of fibers. Due to the mesh of fibers, paper is flexible and could generate curved surface (NURBS), which could be triangulated into triangle surface.
[1]. ENUMERATION By calculate and trace different angles’ situation, I could realize the movement area of one prototype. It could work for simple and one or two stages movement.
As I show in these pictures, two crossed mountain folds could end up in a camp shape structure. B(t) is a ramdon point on the curved edge. But the control points of B(t) is outside this edge, I assume they are P0, P1, P2. P1 is the middle point on the edge. So B(t) is a Bezier curve related to P0, P1, P2.
[2]. CONTROL VARIABLE By limit variable into one, I observe how other parts respond to the variable. And by design new variable, even though the function relationship will not change, unique result may lead to diversal conversation
I add a linkage between center and P1, dividing this triangle curved surface into two flat surface with control points on the edge. This linkage may reduce the confusion caused by the original curved surface, meanwhile, it will clarify the structure system.
[3]. DETAIL MAGNIFICATION When analysing a multi-units structure system, I zoom in to a part of the integrity. It could be a vertex, or a shared bar between two vertex. Beside, I would like to develope new analysis method to mimic the motion of this linkage.
