AN EXPANSION FOR BICEFS LABORATORY

Location: Georgetown, SC \ Functions: Laboratory & Offices Working Period: 2017.08 - 2017.12 \ Semester: Second-year of Graduate Team Work \ Supervisor Name: Dustin Albright

BICEFS LABORATORY focuses on three main concepts, EFFICIENCY, TRANSPARENCY, AND CONNECTIVITY, to maximize the overall use across the site. The new laboratory sets up to be a spacious lab, with transparent views to the inner courtyard and the wetland. All the walls perpendicular to the view route through the courtyard to the wetland are transparent curtain walls, while all the structures are parallel with the view route. With the furniture paralleling to view route as well, sights of employers are not blocked by any solid walls. Vertical Louvers wrap around the new lab building, and along the east facade of the existing building, sheltering it from harsh morning and afternoon sunlight. Within the inner courtyard, new canopy trees are planted to provide more shade, especially during the summer. The central courtyard finds its way across to the education building with a wide boardwalk, over a constructed wetland. This axis then continues at a slight upward angle towards the proposed boathouse, where boats, and any other need equipment can be stored.

To maximize the connection of courtyards around the new lab, not only the physical pedestrian path is created and cut through the building, but also all walls perpendicular to the sight route use glass curtain walls to generate the transparency. Your sight to courtyards won’t be blocked at all when you do your works in the lab. All the walls parallel to the sight route are CLT structural walls since to maximize the transparency of the perpendicular walls. Glue laminated wood structure are also parallel with the sight route to minimize the visual blocks. Since the east and west facades are mostly transparent, vertical louvers are added both facades to avoid the sunlight directly projecting into the interior working spaces in the morning and evening.

Old Greenville Newspaper Distrcit, Greenville 273,403 sq foot Cultral & Art Center, Complex 2016.08 - 2016.12 First-year of Graduate in Clemson University Pro. David Franco Jessica Schultz

The project is an extension of the existing Park next to the site on the south, which incorporates the adaptive reuse of an old Newspaper Office building which is out of use. In this design, the site acts as an accessible connection from the downtown of the city to this Park along the river playing an important role for citizens passing through and links culture to community by creating a cultural district within the business district. This cultural district becomes the heart of the downtown of the city. The main program is the Cultural Arts Center Park (including exhibition space, gallery, education space etc. with supporting functions such as commercial, food and beverage, recreation etc.) and the new former Newspaper Headquarters are arranged into the site. The inherited old newspaper office is renovated as an exhibition spaces with an additional floor and a roof deck above.

The rest of the site is redesigned with the concept of connection: connecting pedestrians between downtown at the north of the site and the park at the south of the site, connecting them between the different programs within the site, connecting through courtyards and pathways on ground as well as those on the roof. This connection creates public spaces between the different buildings, creating diversity, welcoming pedestrians to explore the site, and inspiring gatherings and interactions.

EXISTING CONDITIONS

The Greenville News Building is a complex of buildings that is no longer of use. A large parking deck and current side road conditions block pedestrians path to Falls Park from Downtown from accessing Falls park efficiently.

INTRODUCING PROGRAMS

By researching of the programs around this district, the functions related with Culture and Art and the ones support them will be an optimised option for this site.

LINKING BY EROSION

Eroding the site creates porosity and allows a gradual transition from Downtown to Falls Park by creating four entry points gives pedestrians options in which they can meandor.

LINKING AT ROOF + GROUND

This allows the user to ascend or descend as they chose their path, creating a unique user experience while either going thru to the Park or into the buildings.

EXPERIENTIAL SECTIONS SOUTH - NORTH

This allows the user to ascend or descend as they chose their path, creating a unique user experience while either going thru to the Park or into the buildings.

EXPERIENTIAL SECTIONS EAST - WEST

These sections are meant to portray the variety of user experiences that would occur withing the site.

COMMUNITY RAISES THE ROOF Allowing the public to access the roof level helps create a diverse experience for the users. We made sure that the main entrance to the Cultural Arts Center met ADA requirements creating a universal experience.

Land Use and Site Ecology

Rain gardens or bioswales mitigate the stormwater runoff from the city and green roofs slow down the runoff from the roof surfaces while they also create and increase the biodiversity of the area.

Bioclimatic Design

The vertical louvers are designed to react to the site by blocking and letting in sunlight in appropriate areas. The roofs collect rainwater to replenish the toilets and irrigation system that waters the green roofs and also act to reduce the urban heat island effect and improve air quality indoors and outdoors. The green roofs and rain gardens also encourage biodiversity.

Energy Flows and Energy Future

The “new News Building demands high energy use day and night, with employees working long hours, all hours of the day. This building seeks to offset energy usage and create a carbon neutral building. With the adoption of vertical shading louvers on east and west facade and horizontal shading louvers on south facade, the energy maintaining the satisfied interior temperature is reduced in the summer. And in the winter, the sunlight can easily enter the interior spaces with heat because of the calculated lengths and angles of the louvers relating with the sun angle in this area. The studios use state of the art equipment with high efficiency and energy star rated products, including their projecting systems, and an average of fifty computers. The HVAC and air ventilation is a unique and modern design that senses people in the room and uses less ductwork and less energy to run. It is a variable refrigerant system, that uses small pipes to carry hot and cold water, which quickly activates the temperature settings in any given zone, allowing for custom settings in all rooms, quickly creating a comfortable atmosphere. The small units can be placed under the wrapping shell along with the fresh air system, using the shell to completely incorporate its systems. As described earlier, the building uses many passive systems to mitigate heat gain and reduce CO2 pollution. T

LIGHT & AIR

For this site in Greenville, sunlight in summer carries more thermal energy gain which is necessary to be blocked while in winter is supposed to introduce more into the interior space due to the low temperature. With the horizontal louver s on the south facade, sunlight in summer 1PM JUL 21 will be blocked in 9AM JUL 21 1PM DEC 21 maximum degree. sunlight in winter can easily be filtered into interior spaces for energy saving and warmer human feeling. To provide shading on the east and west facades, vertical louvers with specific angles and different densities are applied in different areas depending on the public/private level of the spaces behind these louvers. Courtyards surrounded by buildings also contribute to the natural light environment. Various courtyards with different sizes and depths depending on different programs provide opportunities of natural sunlight for depth interior spaces. These courtyards also provide occupants with a constant view of nature or the parks, with 85% of the rooms having views to the outdoors.

Water Cycle

Considering rainwater collecting and filtration is an important aspect in the city because it usually gets 50 inches of rainfall per year, 13 inches above the US average. Different greywater collecting facilities in different courtyards are able to collect and filtrate greywater and supply surrounding buildings and landscape. Among total square footage of 6.0 acres in site, 40% area is covered by permeable materials such as earth/plants, bricks, permeable concrete. These permeable materials can hold and collect XXX gallons of greywater per year which equals XXX gallons of water consumption on this site. In the meantime, a green roof is strategically applied to hold and filtrate greywater for the plants on the roof.

Design and Innovation

The major design concepts for this project are rhythm, connection, and diversity. The region’s warm-humid climate requires each facade orientation to be given special consideration. Because of this, it was decided to incorporate vertical louvers on the east and west facades, overhangs on the southern facades, while the north facades do not require any shading devices. Rhythm is introduced through these operable shading devices. Connection plays a large role, connecting the ground level to the roof and connecting Main Street to Falls Park and the Reedy River. These connections along a series of courtyards and pathways create diversity. It is a public space for the cultural arts but also having educational aspects such as public lectures in the auditorium, workshops, outdoor classrooms on the roof, a tourism center, exhibition spaces, and resident artist studios along with other amenities found in a city that creates and encourages diversity, like a restaurant, a rooftop bar, and a cafe with a bookstore. All of these programs create a micro city inviting people of every background to enjoy the site and the city.

Regional/Community Design

The site is adjacent to an existing park on a river along its southern border and the downtown area to the north. It is similar to the larger context in regard to creating density, but it is transitional by nature; it is the space that brings pedestrians from the city to the park to the river. It is a parklike setting with the density of the city. Eroding the site creates porosity and allows a gradual transition from Downtown to Falls Park by creating four entry points gives pedestrians options in which they can meander. The roof path allows the user to ascend or descend as they chose their path, creating a unique user experience while either going thru to the Park or into the buildings. Also this duo of pathways creates rich spaces and portrays the variety of user experiences that would occur within the site.

LIFE IN GARDENS

A HEADQUARTER DESIGN WITH THE SPIRIT OF CHINESE GARDEN

Location: Chengdu, Sichuan Province \ Area: 2,430 sqm \ Functions: Headquarter Working Period: 2010.10 - 2010.12 \ Semester: Second-year of Graduate Single Work \ Supervisor Name: Pro. Lin Zhou

In Chinese traditional gardens, gardeners were resourceful in composing different elements in a limited area and complicated landform to create an isolated mini-nature inside. The site was located in Niushou Mountain, which is a place near Chengdu. The plot was in an irregular shape. The design objective is to build a headquarter with offices and apartments.

The western plot is a rectangle with wider corridors and buildings, in the meanwhile, it has a big courtyard with buildings surrounding it.

The eastern plot is more narrow with private and service area. The courtyard within is relatively small but with tighter connection.

The space defined by buildings and walls becomes the garden with plants and water features.

The courtyard divides the space as well as provide sunshine and ventilation to the buildings surrounding it.

Different courtyards has different themes. In Chinese traditional garden design, plants, water features, artificial dupes, natural stone and pavilions are all important design elements to be composed in various ways by garden designers. Corridors that connect all those elements organically are also acting a main function role in the garden.

The elevation used the color of Chinese traditional Guan style architecture as the main tone. Curtain wall panels for the balconies borrows the design of traditional Chinese flower window panels, while reinterpreting into a simplified and contemporary ceiling windows. Views from interior is more open and free. Window louvres can be open and closed freely, which will give more layers and certain rhythms to the elevations. In the living quarter, functioned rooms except for the service rooms are all facing to different courtyards, inviting the “artificial nature inside. People living in has a variety of scenery that they can choose from different courtyards.

FLOATING PARKS

AN OLYMPIC PARK DESIGN WITH RISING CIRCULATION

Location: LA, CA \ Functions: Olympic Park with Rugby Stadium, Velodrome, Tennis Centers, Field Hockey Venues Working Period: 2017.01 - 2017.04 \ Semester: Second-year of Graduate Team Work \ Supervisor Name: Henrique M Houayek

How to organize two main circulations of an olympic venues park - Visitors circulation and Back of House circulation - is the key issue which needs a careful consideration. In this design, the visitor pedestrian path is raised to a bridge level to release most of spaces on the ground level for the connection to the back of house. A canopy connect the rugby center and two tennis centers together to continue the language of the bridge. Because after the Olympic Games this rugby center will be used for soccer ground, the games will mostly be held in the late afternoon around 7 pm. The sunlight will shoot from southwest. To better shade the audience the part to the southwest of the canopy grows thicker while other parts shrink accordingly.

HUZHOU GENERAL HOSPITAL Location: Huzhou, Zhejiang \ Above Ground Building Area: 153,981 sqm \ Functions: General Hospital Working Period: 2014.12 - Now \ Stage: Concept Design - Design Development (In Progress) Design Office: Perkins+Will Group Work \ Supervisor Name: Jason Hsun (Design Director) Main Team Members: Runchao Xu, Xiaopen Gao, Zheng Gong, Snow Chin, Zhou Fang Role: Participated in Masterplanning, Primary Medical Program Design, Concept Development, Most of Secondary Medical Program Design, Medical Analysis Diagrams Structure Consultant: Zhejiang Mordern Architecture Traffic Consultant: Arup Cladding Consultant: Schmidlin

Huzhou General Hospital is a complex hospital. After completion, it will receive 6000 people per day. It has 1500 beds, 23 operation room. The gross area is 203,962sqm with 153,981sqm above ground and 49,981 underground area. Top height in the building is 58.3m. Each medical program of Huzhou General Hospital connect others through the Medical Street.

I took part in this project from the concept stage. In this stage, I contributed to the masterplan design, primary medical planning, facade design etc.

In Schematic Design stage, I contributed to the primary medical planning of some program, such as outpatient and inpatient typical plans, surgery center plan, ICU plan etc.

The concept explores the healing process as represented by a Tree of Life – with nature being a necessary component to human health and vitality. Nature, as represented by sunlight, plants, and the surrounding landscape have been brought into the hospital as an important factor to aid in the healing process.

At a time when most people are not feeling well, the design of the proposed facility breaks through the typical Chinese hospital experience, creating a positive, uplifting atmosphere for patients and their visitors.

ZHUQIAO REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER Location: Shanghai \ Above Ground Building Area: 149,200 sqm \ Functions: General Hospital Working Period: 2015.08 - 2015.10 \ Stage: Concept Design Design Office: Perkins+Will Group Work \ Supervisor Name: Jason Hsun (Design Director) Main Team Members: Runchao Xu, Xiaopen Gao, Zheng Gong Role: Participated in Masterplanning, Primary Medical Program Design, Concept Development, Secondary Medical Program Design, Diagrams

This concept attempts to break down the singular block into multiple“ units of hospitals where doctors and nurses have a sense of belonging to a smaller community. The hospital is divided into smaller units with doctors and nurses having a better sense of community. Each unit is then connected to a wider network of other units through a main medical circulation spine.

The architectural form allows the natural landscape to penetrate into the interior, allowing patients to have constant visual and physical contact with nature, aiding in their healing process. There are also numerous designated healing parks and activity courtyards throughout the hospital complex. I took part in this project from the concept stage. In this stage, I contributed to the concept development, primary and secondary medical planning of certain programs, facade design etc.

治愈的村落 THE HEALING VILLAGE

The hospital is divided into smaller units with doctors and nurses having a better sense of commun ed to a wider network of other units through a main medical circulation spine.

新的医院设计将根据功能将医院分为一个一个更和谐的小村落,这些村落将通过一个宽敞的医学街连接 络。
