2022
From my perspective, Architecture and Urbanism is a combination of cutting-edge disciplines, including highly complex mega-systems engineering in many aspects, such as administration, economy, communication, the Internet, transportation, and energy. Only by scientifically, rationally and effectively predicting and operating the system of the city can we truly build a highly developed city of the future. A period of quantity reduction, quality improvement, and stock replenishment will be the norm in the future based on the state of policy. Since I was exposed to various community revitalisation initiatives during my undergraduate studies, I am curious about how to manage properties in a way that is sensible, affordable, and helpful to the community. With this in mind, I am irresistibly drawn to the University of Manchester’s MA in Architecture and Urbanism programme.
During my undergraduate studies in Architecture, I mastered the fundamentals of physics and architecture-related structure knowledge. After accumulating certain professional knowledge, I independently learned graphic design programmes such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and modelling programmes such as SketchUp and Rhino, and renderers like Vray and Lumion. In addition, I finished nine scheme design projects, researched the details and fundamental scale relationships of numerous building structures and the logical organisation of numerous functional buildings, and had a general understanding of buildings of various volumes in architecture, urban planning, and construction project management. In the process of concentrating on residential unit design and the pertinent design requirements for underground garages when designing high-rise residential complexes, I gradually improved my ability to think critically and solve difficulties. My undergraduate experience has given me a rigorous and meticulous understanding of professional expertise in architecture, urban planning, construction management, and real estate, which will serve as a steppingstone for my future studies.
The MSc in Architecture and Urbanism programme at the University of Manchester is a perfect fit for me to bridge the gap between my current capabilities and professional requirements. I look forward to being a part of your prestigious university and advancing my career plans with your support.

A New Daily Life Circle for The Elder
according to the aging of population

The speed of urban development is amazing, but some blocks in the city are gradually not suitable for the elder. In these blocks, narrow alleys and circuitous paths make it difficult for the elderly to walk. Residents usually need to get to the peripheral streets of the community first before reaching various destinations most of the time and it must be a nightmare for the elder definitely under the consideration of their health condition.
As a residential area, some residential buildings here were built 30 years ago, while some have just been built, which makes the demographic composition here complex.
Our current location is a special area in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou.
Mr. Su is 75 years old now. He has lived in Zhuguang street for 10 years and lives with his son's family
I basically do the same thing every day.
Fortunately, have a hobby of writing calligraphy.
I can compete with my old friends in the activity room.
Mrs. Liu is 72 years old She came to Zhuguang street last year and prepare three meals a day for her daughter's family.
Every morning, usually go to the market nearby to buy ingredients for meals that day.
To tell you the truth, my daily life is nothing unusuall.
I'm a native of this place.
My family settled here a few years.
My workplace is around here.
have a grandson who is just in the fourth grade this year. have picked him up every day since primary school.
Mr. Jin is 79 years old He and his wife is natives of Guangzhou.
It seems that you need to go to several places in order everyday, isn' it?
Yes, my daily schedule is almost fixed, so do most people in my age.
Local residents Foreign residents Tenant
When wandering in the community, we found that most of the people who were active in the community were the elderly.
I go to many places every day.
Do you think there is method to make it more convenient in your daily activities ?
Well, think it will be better if the path to each destination could be optimized.
As far as we know, residents need to get to the peripheral streets of the community first before reaching various destinations most of the time and it must be a nightmare for the elder definitely under the consideration of their health condition.
I see......maybe an overall planing of the block will help.
3
The proportion of people of all ages The start points and the destinations of the three interviewees The routes and the time required The proportion of people active in the community
Classification standard of walking ability of the elderly
Older people who can walk independently anywhere.
Older people who can walk on flat ground, but still have difficulties climbing slopes and stairs.
Older people who can walk independently but need someone to look after them.
Older people who need to rely on crutches to maintain balance.
Older people who need a wheelchair to move.
How to plan the daily life circle for the elder?
1.The main age composition in this block.
By comparing the census data of Zhuguang street in Yuexiu District of Guangzhou in 2000, 2010 and 2020, we find that the age composition of the elderly shows an aging trend.
2.The existing 15 minutes life circle is not applicable
A: high frequency of use and high accessibility requirements
(Supermarket, Food market, Fruit shop)
UNA analysis Simulate result
1. accessibility within 500 meters
2. simulate the path between all start and end points
All starting points can reach more than half of the facilities in the site within 500m.
B: high frequency of use and low accessibility requirements
(Clinic, Pharmacy, Health service center)
1. accessibility within 500 meters
All starting points can reach two pharmacies and one outpatient department within 500m.
C: low frequency of use and high accessibility requirements
(Kindergarten, Primary school)
1.accessibility within 500 meters
2.simulate the shortest path between kindergartens and primary schools and their farthest clusters respectively.
All starting points can reach a primary school and kindergarten within 500m.
The distance and time of the 15 minutes life circle are both higher than the level acceptable to the elder. Making sure old people can reach their destination in no more than 10 minutes and 500m is our target
3.The needs of the elderly in their 70s for the community life circle
The higher the importance of facilities, the more indispensable such facilities are. Facilities are divided into three categories according to their importance:
D: low frequency of use and low accessibility requirements
1.accessibility within 500 meters
All starting points can reach more than one park or greenland in the site within 500m.
(Bank, Police office)

The reconstruction area is located in a public space inside the Zhujiang Garden community. The space function of the original site is chaotic, the sundries are piled up seriously, and the utilization rate is low.
After the renovation, a tearoom will be placed on the ground floor of the residential building.
There are matching seats outside the tearoom, and a gauze ceiling is set locally.
Residents can drink tea, chat, work and read newspapers here.
The reconstruction area is located on the roof of the shanty town in the southeast of the site.
The original site is densely built, the building spacing is seriously insufficient, and the lighting is not ideal.
After the renovation, the roof space of the building will be used as a public activity space, with external elevators. Stairs and walkways will be added locally to connect the roofs.
The platforms with different elevations are respectively provided with screens, auditoriums and planting boxes. Residents can watch movies, chat, grow vegetables and hang quilts here.

With the acceleration of urban aging, the number of elder people in old neighborhoods is increasing, but their activity space is often squeezed and gathered in narrow corners. Through data research and field survey, I transformed a historical building in the block into an activity center that can meet the needs of the elder in the surrounding communities, hoping to light up the lives of the elder.

The site is surrounded by main roads and secondary roads, with convenient internal transportation.
The route for residents to take out garbage or express delivery is very short, and there is no place for public activities along the way.

Historical Origin
Dongshankou is located near the junction of Donghua north area and Shuqian Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. At the beginning of the 20th century, American Christianity selected Dongshan as its missionary base.
Guangzhou Zoo
Most young people will leave Dongshankou for activities most of the time although there are more and more online stores in Dongshankou recently. They think these stores lack the previous historical atmosphere.
Most local residents are retirees. They are proud of Dongshankou culture. With more leisure time, they like to communicate with people. They are one of the most active people in public space. At the same time, there is also a lack of communication with non local residents.

Construction Planning
In the process of urban renewal and construction, the planning requires that in addition to building necessary infrastructure and public welfare public service facilities, xinhepu historical and cultural block shall not carry out new construction and expansion activities.
Dongshanhu Park
I want a place where can read books with my friends.
The Pearl River! The Canton Tower! Where there is a scenic spot, there is us.
Students' daily activities are relatively single. They mostly choose nearby activities, like to gather in public space. They hope to have more activity space with different functions.
Most of travelers came for the exhibition of Dongshankou history and like to visit the streets with historical atmosphere there. They hope to communicate with local residents and increase cultural and artistic space.
If only there was a platform can take a rest when my grandson is playing.

Most of the residential buildings in Dongshankou are western style garden villas. In long-term stage, plan to build a supportive, creative environment for residents living in the community and tourists coming from other districts to relaxing, reading and viewing together. In the course of activity, everyone involved will be able to understand more about this beautiful city full of culture and history. The point is to bring a sense of connection when the crowd gather together on the basis of their understanding of the history of Dongshankou.

The
Market Of Tie Dye In Zhoucheng
Inherit the traditional Bai tie dyeing skills
Author: Zheng Yirong(designing) Wen Tong(modeling)
Location: Yunnan
Type: Public building
Instructor: Zhou Mao
Bai tie-dyeing is an important traditional skill in China, but due to complex historical reasons, this skill has gradually declined and is on the verge of extinction. This design is located in Zhoucheng, the birthplace of Bai tie dyeing. After studying the history of the local tie-dyeing industry and the existing business model, we designed a local market for tie-dyeing production, sales and exhibition.
Vegetable dyes
The traditional tie dyeing process uses vegetable dyes, mainly isatis roots (Indigo), and more than ten kinds of plant dyes such as Alder wood (red), Quercus acutissima nut shell (black), Crofton weed (yellow).
Compared with chemical dyes, vegetable dyes have natural colors, with a certain effect of cooling and anti-inflammatory, and do not stimulate human skin. It also clean and environmental friendly.
Chemical dyes
With the development of technology, chemical dyes have gradually appeared in the process of tie dyeing. People will use more than ten kinds of dyes, mainly direct dyes and acid dyes, for dyeing. Compared with vegetable dyes, chemical dyes are cheaper and easier to use, but they are accompanied by harmful substances that stimulate the skin. Clothes dyed with chemical dyes have the disadvantage of fading.
The present situation and problems of Bai tie dyeing inheritance
Chemical dyeing replaces Vegetable dyeing in a large area, and the traditional dyeing process is on the verge of extinction
There is a serious shortage of labor force, and there is no successor to tie flowers and dyeing technology
The government's support is insufficient and the policy cannot be implemented
