/ Integral Design is a process of evolution and development. We observe, experience, define, research, analyze, brainstorm, ideate, prototype, implement and learn. The design is a visual language that communicates with everyone, and it is just like a silent language that calls on people to do something while bringing them visual and psychosomatic feelings of art. By implementing images, colors, content, and elements to engage users or enhance user satisfaction, design brings something alive and design makes my life meaningful. Each stage of learning and each of my works are very important and necessary. They inspire, challenge, develop and fulfill me. They make me.

/ Objective Develop a rationale for interpreting a piece of music through typography, imagery and layout. Gather and research every idea, emotion, metaphor and visual that you associate with the song. Finally, use projectors to compose them onto various surfaces to create more dimensional design solutions.

/ Approach I chose the band Her’s song “Union” because I felt that it expressed the heat and ecstasy of love and the artist’s addiction to love. I used the variety of typefaces to show love’s changing process. The imagery I collected and the photography I took convey the feeling of obsessed love.

/ Objective Undertake extensive research, writing, image gathering and design. The main source of research material is the environment or habitat. Mentally and physically record things that you see, hear, touch and smell as you go about your daily routines.

/ Approach We leave traces of ourselves wherever we go, on whatever we touch. Everything’s presence will leave a mark belonging to it – like every path you take, every person you meet, every scene you see, every thing you touch. I recorded everything that I saw, heard and touched and photographed the traces.

/ Objective Design a chapbook about the future. What does the future mean to you and how will you tell the audience about the future that you envision? Make sure that this future is tangible and can be realized within ten years.

/ Approach The concept of the chapbook is about the future of memory. Everyone has experienced the frustration of not being able to recall a fact from memory. It could be someone’s name, the French for “town hall” or where the car is parked. While it seems obvious that memories decay, like fruit going off, the research tends not to support this view. Instead many researchers think that in fact memory has a limitless capacity. Everything is stored in there but, without practice, memories become harder to access. This means it’s not the memory that’s ‘going off ’ it’s the ability to retrieve it.

/ Objective Investigates how research and audience understanding create successful interactive projects that can enhance a user’s experience with a brand. Research and design strategies to align a brand with a series of design communication solutions. Develop design multimedia deliverables that engage an audience.

/ Approach I created a mobile app and a quarterly event for people to swap things with others for something else. People don’t need to spend money on used goods and can use their unwanted items to exchange for other interesting things. People may find new friends with the same interests. Also, this app provides opportunities for communication and building bridges of friendship for people who don’t know each other. The mission is to reduce wasteful practices and create new relationships.

/ Objective Propose a topic, identify its relevant audience and stakeholders, then find, create, and implement compelling visual elements in a variety of media that work together as a cohesive system to create engaging and relevant solutions.

/ Approach My brand promotes people's awareness of food safety and storage. People's knowledge of food safety has various dimensions. Some data show that only one-third of people use clean implements or wash their knives and cutting boards with hot water and detergent before reuse and forty-four percent of respondents did not know the correct refrigerator temperature for the storage of perishable food. Correct food storage methods can extend the length of time during which the food is nutritionally viable and safe to eat. Therefore, it is important for people to think about food safety at each step, from shopping to cooking, cleaning and storing leftovers to help avoid foodborne illness.

/ Objective Create a book trailer. A book trailer functions like a conventional trailer for a film. However, it is intended to encourage the purchase of printed matter. Book trailers can employ design and imagery from the book itself set to time, or have original design, animation, or live-action creations visualizing the story, themes, or ideas of the book.

/ Approach I chose Philip Meggs’ book History of Graphic Design. In the book trailer, I used the timeline to show how graphic design developed in different periods and how designers have made innovations in graphic design. From ancient times (15,000BC) to the present (2014), the timeline demonstrates design styles and representative works from different periods. I used the pictures in the book and the modern style to combine them into a new design to show diversity and interest in graphic design in this trailer.

/ Objective Generate a book about the future. This future should not be hundreds of years away, It is about the immediate future, within your own lifetime, no more than 10 years from now.

/ Approach Augmented reality sounds horribly theoretical and abstract, but it's actually very simple: real life plus topical, relevant, background information equals something massively more useful. This book talks about Augmented Reality which is another step further into the digital age as we will soon see our environments change dynamically either through a smartphone, glasses, car windshields and even windows in the near future to display enhanced content and media right in front of us. This has amazing applications that can very well allow us to live our lives more productively, more safely, and more informatively.

/ Objective Select a brand that is defunct, dying or dead and identify its essence. Revive the brand by repositioning and expanding the new brand's identity and creating the new extensions that open the company to a whole new demographic while remain true to its original soul.

/ Approach I chose to re-brand The Sharper Image because it shared the fun of discovering exciting and advanced products in the past. The new identity of The Sharper Image will be formed with the expansion of the brand based on the new concept that help people build confidence and make people feel stand out in society. I did this by developing the new brand visual system and expanding the various services and experience.

/ Objective Produce all the deliverables of a film festival for one director. Discover a common thread that appears in each of the director’s films and conceptualize a design aesthetic that brings it to life. Develop the system of deliveables which should include: poster, a catalog of movies, DVD packaging, sound track, tickets, website and some promotional materials which all capture the essence of the fictitious film festival.

/ Approach The director I chose was Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, who contributed many outstanding works to the world of film in the twentieth century. A common theme throughout his movies is in the hectic, cramped and urban mix of Hong Kong, socially marginalized wanderers meet love by surprise in their busy and lonely life. However, they are still silent, isolated and have a lack of communication. They lose themselves and their affairs end in sorrow and regret.

MFA thesis “AWEAR”

Develop an MFA thesis by defining a problem around us and creating a possible solution through a graphic design approach. MFA thesis project is a year-long process of conducting research, analysing strategies and developing solutions. The design solution will successfully reach its intended audience on multiple platforms that demonstrate conceptual design thinking and practices.

/ Approach Fast fashion is described as “low-cost clothing collections that mimic current trends.” It is dominating the fashion industry. Fast fashion garment industries cause major problems related to exploitation of human rights and environmental crises. The mission is to encourage people to buy less fast fashion clothes and to help them keep clothes longer.
