The Moving Game
Hannah Lynn Davis
By this coming autumn, I will have moved three times in my life.
experience are faint—the biggest upset of the move was the fact that I lost my favorite doll in the move. I’ve asked my parents and I know that for the most part the move went smoothly. Our house sold fairly quickly and our house
and we moved from a small city to a neighborhood that bordered the suburbs and the country. The second time, I “moved” to southern Ohio to go to university. The third time, this coming August, will be me moving to Boston for graduate school.

commutes to work but we had a place to live. My sister and I were young enough that we barely even noticed the change. The biggest issue to note was that this as a family—we were moving from the home my parents bought together when they got married. Moving means that you don’t always completely unpack, but some possessions from earlier in life go into storage (in our case, our basement). This result is both a blessing and curse—if I’m looking for something, I know I should What I need might be from the late eighties, but it’s still in good condition. It’s also great really doesn’t need to be down here? At the same time, there is the horrible, lingering For the record, I’ve been through every box in that basement looking for my favorite doll and never found it. I have this grand fantasy that someday, when my mother is pulling the move will have some use.

Moving to Oxford, Ohio, however, had more of an impact. Moving out for university is the weird combination of being away from your parents and having to take care of yourself while simultaneously being dependent on them. It’s also a lesson in what you need and don’t need. After my freshman year. I packed much less—I was only going to be gone for nine months and I need to save room for what I would accumulate over the school year. Moving out always brings much more than moving in, I’ve realized. Plus, space is a factor. A huge factor. My dorm room was two smaller. Under-bed storage becomes a necessity when living in such a small space.
This autumn, I will be moving to Boston, an entirely new experience. It not like moving for school—I’ll be living in an apartment, possibly by myself, in a city with a high cost of living. I’m going to make the move from the Midwest to the East coast in the most convenient way possible. There are countless questions I’ve never had to ask myself before. I know the answer to this question for myself, as I’m mostly likely going to live with someone from the same graduate program. However, moving to a new city is expensive and scary for some. Living with someone else could be bea decent living situation. It cuts down on the

rent cost for sure and it can be nice to have someone to converse, even if it’s just small talk. You don’t have to be best friends with your roommate, but you have to be able to exist in the same space. What do I do about furniture? I personally am only moving to Boston for a year. Do I raid my parents’ basement for furniture and buy the pieces that I need or do I rent it? It’s a double-edged sword. Renting means I have to pay a monthly fee but otherwise I’m renting a U-Haul to move me in and out of school. It goes back to the roommate argument. If I live with someone else, we can split some of the furniture halfway. However, if they staying in the city longer or moving permanently, half of the furniture leaves with me. There isn’t a winner for anyone’s pocket or apartment here.

Those are questions that are pertinent to my situation however. As I’ve said, I have only moved three times in my life. I have friends and family who have moved countless times. It’s an art, really, being able to pack your life into boxes and move from place to place. We are humans and we accumulate our possessions out of sentiment and nostalgia. Many of the items we own have been passed down or gifts. When we move, we decide what to take with us and what we risk losing in the move. Not everything will always make it. We trust others to help us make the transition.

I will move quite a few more times in my life. I’m young and I’m looking at a career in academia—I will go where the job takes me. I have gained advice from those around me and every move will bring new knowledge. It’s something you can only really understand from experience and eventually I will have plenty of it. For now, however, I need to recognize the issues I already know and ask for all the help I can get. Some day, someone else is going to need that same advice and while my help is valuable now, it can only be richer in the future with my own experience.

Upcycling Trends: The Mason Jar Hannah Lynn Davis
Growing up, I knew what mason jars were (although in my house we occasionally called them Ball jars) because my mother used them for their original purpose—canning. In the summer heat, with the windows open, my mother would stand over the stove canning homegrown tomatoes and green beans. In the winter, she would tell me to run downstairs and grab a jar of tomatoes, only to be later told to take the now clean class jar back to a different shelf. And now mason jars are everywhere, being used for everything but canning. Mason jars were invented and patented in 1858 by a Philadelphia-based tinsmith named John Landis Mason. Their key design feature was the combination of the steel ring and lid, which can be hermetically sealed against he mouth of the jar. They come in various sizes and for a time in the
early 1900s, various colors. Now, however, the steel lids are often replaced with plastic, as the home canning industry has been on the decline since the 1950s and mason jars are Instead of canning and jammaking, it seems that mason jars have a better use now for decoration or giving a rustic feel to room or event. Here, we will note some common trends in the current use of mason jars.
1. Dry Good Storage In regards to food stovrage, this seems to be the go-to use for glass jars now.I personally have used them as airtight containers for loose-leaf tea and rock sugar, but others use them for goods needed in smaller quantities—spices, herbs, and specialty baking products. If airtightness is needed, devices are sold to go under the lid (very similar to the original canning devices).

2. Baking & Cooking Gifts This one is probably my favorite. During the holidays, people love to give soup, bread, and cocoa mixes in tiny, decorative bags (I have one sitting on my desk right now). But putting these layered mixes into a glass jar is not only beautiful but also better for the long term. You won’t have toworry about mixes getting ruined by condensation or bugs. Instead, they can sit on the counter until the perfect moment for use. Plus, the gift recipient gets their own mason jar to use and how is that for upcycling.
3. Vases I came home one day to my roomHer sister had used them at her engagement party as centerpieces. This is an example of how the jars are used for the “rustic, country feel.” All sizes can be used (in this case they were small for smaller bunches of wild Of course, they also work well for fake year-round. No one is going to tell you that a mason jar doesn’t make a perfect vase because let’s be honest,
4. Lanterns Here is where you can get really
creative. There are countless ways to make lanterns out of these jars for any occasion. You can stick tea lights in the bottom or rig them up on a sturdy string of lights. If you want colored lanterns, a little modge podge and tissue paper will work perfectly and suddenly you have a glow of pink and orange lights at an outdoor evening event. If you would just like lightly tinted jars, there are plenty of tutorials online involving modge podge and a little bit of food coloring.
5. Drinking Glasses I’m seeing this one more and more just water glasses but now people are branching into “mason jar cocktails.” They are perfect for summer drinks on the porch—alcoholic or not. You them straight from the brim but your drink will be cool on a summer night when all you want to do is lay back and relax after a long day. These are popping up in stores too, decorated with chalkboard paint labels and other designs. But you can make them right at home if you want and no one will ever be the wiser.
6. Candles You will need a little more supplies here, but these are great vessels for homemade candles. If you want to feel really thrifty, go ahead and get

your colored wax from old crayons (I have a distinct memory of coloring as a child and my mother and aunt stealing all of the red-violet crayons they could It’s a time consuming project, but a great way to recycle a lot of old materials and in the end you have the satisfaction of your own candles, not to mention being able to use them for gifts during the holidays.
7. Canning It never hurts to go back to the roots of the mason jar. If you’ve inherited some, it’s not hard to get the necessary pieces to get you on the road to making your own jams and jellies. It’s nice to have the taste of your own, self-canned vegetables in the dead of winter. Plus, making it at home requires less preservatives. For a bit, you may feel as if you have been transported back to the 1950s, but the pay off is more than worth it—and certainly delicious. There are millions of ways to use your old (or new) mason jars. They don’t have to sit in your basement on the shelf, empty and out of use. The best part is that not all projects have to be the end all project. A jar for beans can become a vase. It’s glass—it can be cleaned and the ones made more recently can go in the dishwasher. The mason jar is timeless and has no need to worry about becoming irrelevant.
