GOTHIC RECURSIVE 2014 Bartlett School of Architecture/ University College London Algorithm Design Tutor:Benjamin Dilenburger With an exponential increase in the possibilities of computation, architecture is now facing novel challenge. As architectures, we can design for infinite resolution and density of information, controlling the deposition of millions of material particles. Yet there is lack of design methodology to harness the full potential of computational power and computer-controlled fabrication. When compared to historic architecture. for example, the Gothic, computational experimentation is still not able to successfully generate the same level of fine detail hierarchy information density. The project is focus on understanding and generation a “digital Gothic structure based on recursive algorithm. We mainly tried to understand the recursive nature of the gothic and how a simple element repeats in different situations maintaing hierarchy and high resolution.

GOTHIC PROTHESIS 2013 Bartlett School of Architecture/ University College London Algorithm Design Totur:Manuel Jiménez García ,Gilles Restin Instead of doing design and arrange every detail one after another, algorithm design has been used in this project with Multi Agent Base System - Processing. It is a new platform to think and develop the project, which could generate the outcomes with incredible high resolution detail beyond our imagination. Gothic logic is transferring the beauty of the nature to architecture. Those variable structure and ornaments blend together and follow certain rules of hierarchy. The project Gothic Prosthesis followed the concept. It has its own computational logic to generate a column as a building ’s”Prosthesis” to replace the original one in octahedral Lady Chapel in the Wells cathedral.

SPACEWIRES-FILAMENTRICS 2013-2014 Bartlett School of Architecture/ University College London Algorithm Design and Robotic Fabrication Teamwork Totur:Manuel Jiménez García, Gilles Restin

The design system of the “Space Wires” is a combination of multi-systems and each of them is produced based on the form of another and interact with each other under certain conditions. To establish more control over the design the idea of recursive is infused in the design. Initially, the first hierarchy of the design system is generated by agents that follow the vector field while effect one anther with behaviors of cohesion, separation and alignment. Secondly, each agent will read the structure data and branches to generate a bezier curve between the former structure layer based on the structure information. The branching behavior will continuous recursively and finally generate a whole form of fine recursive beliers of continuity and hierarchy. The behaviors are not isolated, they exchange in different situations and are continuous.

Tension Line 1

Tension Line 2

Additionally to deal with different situations and act different functions, we add multi - behavior into the system so that “wire keeps changing behavior when it runs through the space, forming solid for columns and floors, surface for walls and space frame for the structure part by moving in different patterns. It can also do decoration at certain parts by using different behavior. In this case, the designer is not controlling anything, but somehow everything is under control. And the final system is a mixture of various behaviors and

The project is located in Wangjing A6 plot, Chaoyang District, Beijing. Convenient transportation is the advantage to attract people to come. The site of project is Located in the northeast of the crossing which Jingcheng Highway intersects Fifth Ring Road. There is one subway station of Line 14 in two years. As City landscape, the park is in southeast direction, which is the good condition to increase the quality of working office. Combining these advantages, the complex will become the catalyst in this area.

A6 COMPLEX---Circulation Analysis Design starting point is to create a small city, put all the functions into our site, combined with some design objective conditions, based on the texture of city to form our space. 1.Creating a center landscape echoes with the surrounding environment. 2.On the basis of pedestrian flow line, forms the liquid distribution of commerce and office. 3.Based on the formation of city texture, creates the plane.

Campus Environment: The prevailed facade style of the campus buildings is insome extent uniform and rigid.

What We Want: I hope this new project could provide a more vivid vision of campus and attract more people to aggregate in this place.

SITE

Beijing University of Technology The project locates in the south east corner of Beijing University of Technology, which is planed to be the central district of the school in the coming future. It will function as the key place to host increasing academic communication affairs, and provide visitors with conference space and accommodation as well. As the new platform for external communication, the International Communication Center carries the new image of the school, and will play a significant part in shaping the campus context.

time:12:00 am

time:10:00 pm

Present context of campus: The school population distribute unevenly, and population density in north part in campus is much higher than south part. However, according to the analyze, the south campus has more space for various of school activities and are capable to provide better views, large public piazza and part of academic buildings. These resource are under developed.

Outdoor Space Campus Environment: Space feelings in campus is dull and boringInterior space and outdoor space is completely separated. What We Want: Interior space and outdoot space interpenetrate and we could get rich sense of space.

BUILDING SKIN TEXTURE: The communication center locates in the place which is next to the largest green square of Beijing University of Technology. Therefore, the façade design is based on the environment for making itself into campus. The building elements should be decided by the surroundings. If the green square could be recorded as photograph, it would be divided into different levels——green area people walking in it sky and cloud. Natural landscape will be abstracted by architectural language,

SPACE FORMATION According to the pattern of urban texture, we intall the axis and from where I create two circular circulation system overlap upon each other. They are stand for the perfect marriage of the social system and school culture system.

These two circular system stands for two groups and subdivide, rise up into an enormous roof platform and then creating a form responding to the nature environment. Further more, the roof platform system will divide into smaller ones in order to build stronger connection with human scale.

N48째

The site locate in 48째 north latitude where is severe cold region, the unique weather condition and vernacular characteristics have a profoundly influence. This becomes primary consideration of facade design.

ELEVATION DESIGN

The winter is severe cold and company with strong north-west wind, while it is dry and hot in the summer. How to make use of the solar energy and keep from the north wind need to take effective tactic in the facade design. The vernacular architecture has strong architectural characteristic that need us to take consideration how to respond in a proper way.
