About me

M y name is Angela. I was born in Chile in 1994. Ever since I was a child, I have loved drawing and creating characters, stories and enchanted worlds. At the early age of five I travelled to the USA, and lived in the amazing city of Chicago for the next five years until returning to my country in 2004. I finished high school in 2012 and entered the University of Valparaíso to major in Design in 2013. That career did not fully motivate me, because it was more focused on industrial design than art. After that, I decided to study something completely different, for that reason, I entered the Culinary Institute, with the aspiration of becoming a chef. Even though I like baking pastries and cookies, working in the food industry, especially the preparation of savory dishes wasn’t what I wanted. Some years later, I entered Duoc UC Professional Institute to study for becoming an illustrator, because my passion is definitely creating art. I enjoyed those years, considering I had the chance to polish my artistic skills as well as learning new techniques. As for my goals, I have many of them as an illustrator, for example I would love to keep improving my artistic abilities and learning new methods that will help me create beautiful and meaningful artwork for all kinds of people and companies anywhere in the world.

The things I like There are many things that I like besides drawing. Like most girly girls, I like fashion, dolls, jewelry, sweets and traveling. Despite that, I have unusual interests, for example, I like talking to people from the most remote corners of the world and have friends in many countries; besides that I’m a fan of fantastic and mythical creatures like fairies, mermaids, elves and vampires. Also I’m a huge fan of BJDs (ball jointed dolls). Due to my passion for dolls, I have learned to create my own using felt, a versatile material with great possibilities.

I find pleasure in designing my dolls’ clothing and styling their hair,

combining colors and materials... to achieve magical results.

My other hobby is baking pastries and cookies in different shapes and

flavors.

I find lots of inspiration in BJD dolls, fairytales, couture dresses and ornate gowns reminiscent of past eras, being heavily influenced by Victorian, Belle Époque, Regency and Medieval dress styles. I also find inspiration in movies, books, children’s stories, and fantastic creatures such as mermaids, and fairies. Furthermore, I’m interested in nature, whether it’s flowers, animals or insects. My wildest dreams are to become a BJD designer, illustrating children’s books and traveling to other countries.

Academic Portfolio

T he next pages are a selection of illustrations that I created during my years of study, using both traditional and digital styles. Needle felted illustration of a fairy.

It’s a form of digital illustration, that instead of using pixels to form an image, uses lines, points or curves called vectors. It’s most notable aspect is that it can be scaled to any size without losing its quality. The illustration on this page and the graphics on the next two pages were created using Adobe Illustrator.

Illustration of Jobs

The two drawings above, created using colored pencils, represent two different jobs, jewelry designer and pastry chef.

This was one of my favorite academic assignments because I’m fond of stained glass art and the amazing and colorful light effects that they can create.

Calendar This assignment consisted of creating four imaginary beetles. Each one of these beetles representing one of the four seasons. Those beetles were then used to decorate a calendar. I chose colors, elements and aesthetics related to the specific seasons.

The Carrousel

T his task consisted in choosing an object and illustrating it in different ways, using various artistic styles. I wanted to draw something I have always loved: the carrousel. I had fun drawing this magical and timeless object.

Source: Google

Valentine’s Day

This carousel, inspired on Valentine’s Day, was created with colored pencils. I used warm tones and lots of pink, to achieve a romantic and delicate atmosphere true to the festivity.

Steampunk Style

Steampunk is a style that combines both futuristic and Victorian elements, using objects like wind-up toys, keys and clockwork elements. The colors used in this colored pencil illustration are predominantly metallic, with gold, silver and bronze being very important.

The word “Kawaii” means cute or adorable in Japanese. Among the sweets that inspired me to create this carrousel, you can find lollypops, meringues, peppermint candies and frosted animal cookies. The technique I used was acrylic paint.

Kawaii Aesthetic

Halloween This carrousel, drawn using colored pencils, combines Halloween elements like witches, pumpkins, spiderwebs, skeletons and black cats. I used cool tones, like blue and green, with touches of black and orange.

Grid illustrations

Art

The following illustrations and doodles were drawn on notebook pages. A variety of illustrative styles were used to achieve the results. The notebook’s grid was used as a guide. Nouveau Style, elaborated in colored pencils.

Psychedelic Style, created with markers.

Zentangle, created using colorful markers.

Impressionism, created with oil pastels.

Illustrations for children’s books

T his is a short story, aimed primarily at preschoolers. It tells the story about a cat and a fish, who became friends and had many adventures together. The task was to represent two scenes of the book and organize the illustration on a page, along with excerpts of the story.

Cat and Fish

To create this story I chose watercolors, because I thought it would bring interesting results, (since the story has underwater scenes). The style is colorful and whimsical, with colorful and playful characters.

Micro story S tory illustrated using vector art in Adobe Illustrator, using the software as a tool to obtain special light effects, shadows, texture and more, using layers. The story’s author is unknown, and is originally written in Spanish,

Design

Character

T his task consisted in creating a character and illustrating it. The following pages show the evolution of my character, the descriptive sheets show the physical and psychological traits, the construction of the character, posing chart, facial expression chart, rotation chart and accessories (props).

The Storyboard

t’s a cinematic way of representing a story, using a sequence of drawings depicting different scenes, with the intention of guiding the actors and production team members of a movie or TV show. It is characterized by its technical language and by being illustrated in squares or rectangles in the same size, depending on the dimensions of the screen. A little text can accompany the illustrations as well.

Storyboard representing a scene from the 1975 movie “Jaws”. The storyboard in the next page is from a Chilean movie.

The Cómic I t is a form of graphic narration, which tells a story through vignettes, balloons and other illustrative elements. It differs from the storyboard, since it is more informal, not necessarily for movies and its panels come in different shapes and sizes. These are my character’s posing and expression charts.

Mock-up

Mock-up of the illustration pasted on a city poster. The image of the city was obtained from the internet. of the advertisement in a

This illustration was developed for a bottle of ROSÉ, a variety of wine characterized by its pale rose color. To elaborate it, I found inspiration on roses, which I used to design the girl’s dress and hat, in order to create a classic and elegant atmosphere.

This illustration was created to adorn a bottle of LATE HARVEST, a variety of sweet white wine. For this purpose, I used the same character, but this time only her face, which I decorated with flowers and hearts, giving the illustration a romantic and fresh atmosphere to represent the sweetness of this wine variety.

This illustration was created for the bottle of FRAMBOISE, a bold and deep red raspberry liqueur. To represent this product, which is not a wine itself, but a liquor, I wanted to reflect that difference in the illustration, adding touches of bright red in the raspberries that decorate the character, who is a raspberry picker. I also applied red to the letters that indicate the name of the product.

Blinding Lights

Illustration chosen for the CD’s cover

T his task was about illustrating a CD cover for a musical artist, along with the artist’s booklet, using the singer’s aesthetic and personal style for its creation. The singer I chose was TheWeeknd and his CD Blinding Lights, which presents an aesthetic I found interesting, with touches of neon and horror elements.

Blank Book Promotional Booklet

Poster created for an imaginary concert of the singer Dua Lipa. The results were obtained by combining traditional illustration techniques, such as colored pencils, along with digital elements. Created according to the style of the singer, it presents psychedelic colors, inspired by some of her videos.

Dua Lipa Future Nostalgia

This is a variation of the poster, which features more saturated colors and higher contrast.

Gamification

cation is a concept that refers to an interactive app, that has the goal of educating people on important topics, while being fun to use. I designed an educational application called "My Wild Pet", with the aim of raising awareness about endangered animals, educating people of all ages about the importance of caring for them. In this application, people can "adopt" an endangered animal, learn more about the ashcards, which provide information about its physical characteristics, behavior and habitat. The user will have the chance to help an animal in need once they adopt it, donating a small amount of money. That money will be destined to help a real specimen of the species they chose. In this app, the user will be able to see if the animal is happy or sad. If the animal is taken good care of, points will be rewarded to the user and it’s sad or unwell, the person will lose points. It is a fun and easy-to-use app, because it has many interactive games and lots of cute

Stationery design T hese designs of a cute bunny were created with the aim of being used for the corporate stationary of an imaginary company. The company I created is a pastry store which I named “Cherie”. The illustration, inspired by the Kawaii aesthetic, was applied in the different products as shown in the following images.

The Sun as a source of life

This illustration was created in oil pastels for the“Manos Mestizas” exposition. The idea of this event was to represent the concept of the sun through illustrations. I wanted to represent the sun as a dreamcatcher, from which plants and butterflies emerge, elements that represent life.

Personal Creations

My Style

S ome words to describe my style are fantastic, colorful and sometimes childish, being inspired by classic and modern elements at the same time. The following pages show illustrations created for personal projects. Some of them were also personal projects used in the academic environment.

M y personal style is a mixture of elements of nature and fantastic elements intertwined with each other, in order to obtain an ethereal, magical, blissful and calm atmosphere, with touches of fairyland and intergalactic vibes. My goal is creating delicate and aesthetically pleasing illustrations.

One of the things I like the most is combining colors in infinite ways to create magical, ethereal scenery.

Like a colorful daylight scene.

Or a cozy night at a fairy village.

I like to bring enchanted places to life, like this tree full of lights.

This is my character, to which I added a chromatic aberration effect and different color combinations. I like to experiment in order to achieve different aesthetics.

Design of keys in different colors.

Jellyfish Tale

F antasy genre story, which I wrote as a personal project and also used for academic work. It is aimed at young children and tells the story of a young mermaid who, unlike the other mermaids, who have a fish tail, has a jellyfish tail, that has the capacity of electrocuting its victim. For that reason, she is very self-conscious and struggles to be accepted as she is. The illustrations were created digitally, from a pencil sketch. This story contains a variety of illustrations full of color, glow in the dark elements and magical beings.

Like in these two images, where the colors and light give it a sunset or twilight feeling.

For developing the illustrations, I used different color effects and lighting to achieve the desired atmosphere.

Other digital drawings

Two different characters developed in procreate.

This illustration in bright colors represents another mysterious underwater scene.

An enchanted tree in a fairy forest. I wanted to create an ethereal atmosphere with bright colors.

Another example of character design, where the character is placed over a colorful background, in a non realistic style.

The same character in an enchanted forest with a raspberry shaped carriage in the distance.

Grass and depth studies.

Flight of Butterfliesthe Dreams are like butterflies, they’re hard to catch but not impossible. That’s what I wanted to represent in this illustration, where the fairy is surrounded by different types of butterflies. Painted in an impressionist style using acrylics.

A star has fallen from the sky I like stars, waterfalls, and flowering trees, like the ones I illustrated in the image on the left. This drawing was made using Procreate.

I really like the oil pastel and dry pastel techniques, as you can get results similar to those you get using paint. This drawing, achieved with oil pastels, illustrates an enchanted forest. On the next page, the technique used to obtain the luminous effect is dry pastels on black paper.

Oil pastels

ColoredIllustrationsPencil T he following artworks were illustrated using colored pencils, a technique that I really like, because of the great amount of details and precision that it brings.

BelleFairyÉpoque With her enormous Art Nouveau inspired wings and an impressive rose as a hat, this antique fairy communicates elegance and glamour.

flowers

Hair

Princess of the Enchanted Forest blowing in the wind, adorned by delicate spring and soft colors, bring an air of freshness and calm to this character.

Work in progress.

A bouquet of Ixias I love the combination of pink with yellows and greens, like the ones in this bouquet, illustrated with colored pencils.

Red Panda (Ailurus Fulgens)

Mixed media illustration, where imagination goes wild...

T his illustration of a girl with butterflies and the one on the next page, depicting a forest of fairies, were developed mixing diverse techniques like felt and colored pencils, along with digital elements.

Felted Illustrations... A universe of possibilities.

About my creations.felt A lthough it’s not a drawing technique, felt is the ideal medium to create innovative and eyecatching illustrative works, which is why I love working in this technique, experimenting with colors, textures and materials, to achieve delicate and romantic 3D illustrations.

I have been learning and polishing my needle felting skills since 2013. What I most like about needle felting is that it gives us the possibility to create art in three dimensions, because illustration should not be limited to only two dimensions, or only pencil and paper.

I can make various types of artwork using felt. I like to create paintings, which represent natural scenes full of colorful flowers.

To create my felt illustrations, I like combining felted floral backgrounds with little dolls that are also made using that material. Photography comes in very useful when elaborating the illustrations, as it helps me combine the dolls and other sculptures with different backgrounds and lighting.

I’m fond of floral backgrounds and sparkly decorations like glitter, pearls and crystals.
