When I was a child, I admired Japanese Manga because of creative character development and storytelling. I even dreamed of becoming a Manga artist, but as I entered adolescence, my goal changed to studying animation. There are very few University which has animation major in South Korea and that made the competition rate very high. Academics in South Korea is severe and that caused me great frustration. I have always been under pressure for exams and chasing fine results to satisfy my parents. I had no time to think about what I really liked, my vision about my future was blurry and that caused me living with anxiety. When I eventually ended up studying Visual Communication Design at Dong-Seoul university for two years, I regretted and blamed myself for the unwanted result. Now I think it as an impactful experience that has affected my art style since I did various work. Back then, my confusion in art was an ongoing problem and then things turned out differently when I gained the opportunity to study at Ringling. I slowly developed my own path as an
artist, although I was unsure about my style and my future career. In addition, adapting to a new environment was not easy but there were two things that deeply fascinated me. The first one is a narrative illustration, and the second is visual development. Both of them require creativity and proficiency to manage the content that will draw interest from the viewers. For my thesis, I wanted to work on a narrative illustration of a robot in people’s minds who travels through their memories. This experience could recall memories from the past for the individual to reflect on as well as new adventures to discover. So, I brought up the keyword ‘travel’ and ‘memory’ to visualize the concept which I found appealing. The collection of work is the reflection of my thoughts based on inspiration from the moments captured by Atey Ghailan. To that end, my work often suggests a symbolic narrative. This connotes that life is hard but if you live on, you will have good memories to cherish.
