Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) endeavors to use design principles and strategies to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the construction and operation of buildings. (Palich et al.2011). Our responsibility to incorporate ESD in design and methodologies by aiming to improve structural effectiveness of a building.

Sustainability Environmental Impact A study has shown building construction in concrete structures contributes more than 50% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emission globally and 50% to 62% of the global warming potential (GWP). Results indicate environmental efficiencies are achieved through both the material reduction of steel and concrete. Overall, up to 40.9% reduction in the global warming potential through the utilisation of post-tensioned construction methodology.

Social Impact During construction phase, designs requiring less of the same material lead to less disruption due to reduced pollution, trucking, traffic congestion and waste. In addition, a faster construction cycle can also reduce nuisances of construction sites. Realizing the Possibilities Post-tensioning provides a means to overcome the natural weakness of concrete in tension and to make better use of its strength in compression

In concrete structures, this is achieved by placing high-tensile steel tendons/cables in the element before casting. When the concrete reaches the desired strength, the tendons are pulled by special hydraulic jacks and held in tension using specially designed anchorages fixed at each end of the tendon.
