Your youth ministry has a culture. Whether you know it or not. Whether you want it to or not. Your youth ministry has a feel. A shared language. A way of doing things. Things it values. Things it doesn’t value. Your ministry projects to both insiders and outsiders a specific identity. And that identity is a product of your culture. Whether or not you have considered it before, we love to think about the culture of the youth ministries we serve. We love to think about what makes you, well, you. And we want to challenge and equip you to think about your youth ministry culture, as well.

THE FDA IS SEVERELY
RESTRICTING THE SALE OF FLAVORED E-CIGARETTES.
The Food and Drug Administration plans to significantly restrict the sale of flavored e-cigarettes in an effort to keep teenagers away from tobacco products. Recent research shows that teens may be more likely to smoke cigarettes and use other tobacco products if they pick up vaping. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that as of 2017, about 12% of high school students vaped, making e-cigarettes the most popular tobacco product in that age group — and the FDA says use among high school and middle school students has risen by 78% and 48%, respectively, since then. About 3.6 million kids and teenagers in the U.S. vape, the FDA says. (Source: http://time.com/5454227/fda-flavored-e-cigarette-ban)
HAPPY CHILDHOOD
memories linked to BETTER ADULT HEALTH
Emerging psychological research from Michigan State University suggests fond memories of childhood are linked to better health, less depression and fewer chronic illnesses in adulthood. “We know that memory plays a huge part in how we make sense of the world — how we organize our past experiences and how we judge how we should act in the future. As a result, there are a lot of different ways that our memories of the past can guide us,” said William J. Chopik, Ph.D., lead author of the study. “We found that good memories seem to have a positive effect on health and well-being, possibly through the ways that they reduce stress or help us maintain healthy choices in life.” https://psychcentral.com/news/2018/11/06/happy-childhood-memories-linked-to-better-adult-health/140125.html
MANY TEENS ARE
‘SEXTORTION’ TARGETS
Parents of teens can add “sextortion” to the list of things to worry about, because a new study shows that 5 percent of teenagers are targets of this cybercrime. Another 3 percent of teens have likely done it to others, the study authors added. Sextortion is threatening to share sexually explicit photos without consent if a person doesn’t agree to certain demands, such as sexual favors or money. Dr. Richard Catanzaro, chairman of psychiatry at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, N.Y., said, “Sextortion is just the latest form of online predation. All predators work by preying on people who feel isolated and because they think there is no recourse, are forced to submit.” He advises teens to “be more vigilant with your relationships. You don’t need to be obsessed with keeping a relationship at all costs.” Source: https://consumer.healthday.com/kids-health-information-23/children-and-teen-sex-news-605/many-teens-are-sextortion-targets-738698.html

MOST TEENAGERS
DON’T MEET
UPDATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDELINES.
Adolescents should do at least 60 minutes a day of various moderate-to-vigorous physical activities, according to new physical activity guidelines released this week by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The problem is that most teenagers don’t meet these standards. In analyzing the previous guidelines, the Health and Human Services Department also found that, between 2011 and 2015, only about 30 percent of male and 15 percent of female high school students met the requirements for both aerobic physical activity and muscle-strengthening. “Sports participation declines as youth enter middle and high school, and there are particular barriers— including costs—that limit participation in youth sports, especially among minorities, girls, and low-income youth,” Assistant Secretary for Health Brett Giroir says in a statement accompanying the guidelines. DOES YOUR MINISTRY HAVE STUDENTS COMING TO FAITH IN JESUS?
ARTICLE
IF SO, YOU WANT TO SEE ‘NEW!’
SEVEN WAYS TO
FOSTER A
MISSIONAL CULTURE
UPDATED & REVISED OVER 55,000 COPIES HAVE BEEN SOLD!
IN YOUR YOUTH
MINISTRY
Missional may seem like a buzzword people toss around. But to be missional means to shift your thinking, life, resources, and priorities toward God’s Gospel mission in your community, city, and world. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN DO IS TO FOSTER A MISSIONAL CULTURE IN YOUR MINISTRY. Here are some very practical things you can begin to do to foster this type of missional thinking in your youth ministry.
WORK IN PUBLIC PLACES. If your pastor allows some flex-
ibility, hold your meetings or prepare messages in coffee shops and restaurants. You may see a student working or find a parent. Working in public on a regular basis allows you to learn what is going on in the life of your community.
FIND OUT WHERE GOD IS AT WORK AND JOIN HIM.
Churches are notorious for thinking they have to start ministries from scratch. Find out where other ministries and churches are at work and join them. Help students get a healthy perspective on the Kingdom of God.
DON’T ALWAYS BE A HOMEBODY IN THE EVENINGS.
Take your family to a movie, out to eat, or to the park. Eat dinner with a neighborhood family who has teenagers. Be out where you can meet your students’ friends who you may never see at church.
TURN YOUR GARAGE INTO A FRONT PORCH. Front porch-
es use to be where neighborhoods came together and conversed. Clean out your garage, fill it with drinks, snacks, music, and games. Plan a night to invite groups of students to hang out with your family. No agenda . . . Just you letting missional relationships happen naturally. PRAYER WALK. Take your students prayer walking around their school. Use what you see as cues for prayer (football field, classrooms, etc.). Ask God to fill your heart with a love for students and a desire to see revival break out in students’ hearts.
BE A BETTER LISTENER. Listen with Gospel ears. Just as
the Bible is the story of creation, fall, and redemption, every person has these categories in their story. Where do they find purpose (creation)? What are their struggles (fall)? Where are they looking for fulfillment and satisfaction (redemption)?
ADOPT A LOCAL SCHOOL. Get your entire church on board with pouring their time and resources into serving a local school. Build a better relationship with the principal and teachers. Find out the needs of the school.
Crafting a missional youth ministry philosophy is no quick fix. But these ideas can hopefully jump start the shift in focus.
What does it mean to be NEW? What does it mean to see God in a NEW way? What does it mean to live out the call to follow Christ? These questions can be daunting ones in the lives of the new or "young" Christ-followers in your youth ministry. The updated NEW: FIRST STEPS FOR NEW CHRIST FOLLOWERS answers these questions and more.

FEATURE
FEATURE THE FIRST ELEMENT IS CREATIVITY.
A creative presence is an important part of any culture. It’s especially important to our youth ministries. When we apply the concept of creativity to the cultural considerations of our youth ministries, and specifically to your youth group, it’s interesting to think about how what you create ties you together.
HOW TO BUILD A STRONG YOUTH MINISTRY CULTURE
Building a culture that empowers creativity is fairly simple. It just takes intentionality. For instance, do you have a student worship band? That’s a powerful way to foster students to embrace the spirit of creativity. Creating music to lead your peers in worshiping God? That’s pretty awesome. Or what about allowing students to make the announcement or promotional videos? Or to help incorporate videos they’ve made into worship or lesson prep? Do you allow for creative expression? Things like prayer stations or other contemplative activities? What about your environment? Can you allow students to influence it? When you allow students to creatively influence their environments, you enable the creation of culture. You allow students to shape and craft their experience.
THE SECOND ELEMENT IS COMMUNICATION.
Think about the nature of communication in your youth ministry. Do people feel like they have pathways for their voices to be heard? How about your communication? Do you clearly and consistently communicate with your students? These are important questions when considering how you are building culture.
Years ago, Seth Godin wrote an excellent little book on brand building called “Tribes.” I have never forgotten the framework he used to talk about how we create communication within groups. He said there must be communication from leader to tribe members (you to students), tribe members to tribe member (student to student), and tribe members to outsiders (your students to other students who don’t attend church). Now Godin was talking about a business or a brand. But I have always found this framework to be exceedingly helpful in ministry.
BY ANDY BLANKS
If you do a Google search for elements of a culture, you’ll find a mountain of answers, many of them drastically different. They range from the academic to the corporate and everywhere in between. But let’s step back and ask this same question of our youth ministries.
What elements need to be present for a youth ministry to develop a strong sense of culture, a place where students feel connected to each other and have bought into the purpose of what your ministry is doing? I believe there are at least five elements that are necessary for building a strong youth ministry culture.
.COM OR CALL 866.323.6673
Are you intentional and excellent in how you communicate to your students? What do you do to foster communication between students? Are you working to make sure that everyone has at least an opportunity to use his or her voice? How are you helping your students know how to communicate the Gospel and their love for their community to outsiders? Communication is extremely important when shaping culture.
THE THIRD ELEMENT IS CREATING COMMON EXPERIENCES.
Sharing experiences together knits us to one another. And they are a crucial part of building a strong youth ministry culture. We tend to think about these common experiences
5
in terms of big events. We think common experiences, and we think camps, mission trips, and service projects. Which are definitely ways to create culture through shared common experiences. But they aren’t the only or even the most culturally rich common experiences. Sometimes the common experiences that go the furthest in building culture happen organically. Conversations at football games. Inside jokes born out of funny interactions in coffee shops or movie theatres. Going to concerts together. And so on. It’s often the simpler everyday experiences that allow you to build relational connections, which in turn drive culture.
THE FOURTH ELEMENT IS ARTICULATING AND REINFORCING CORE BELIEFS.
You may be quick to say, “Andy, we’re a MINISTRY. We’ve got this one in the bag.” But do you? How well can your students articulate the core beliefs of their faith? Seriously. If you had them list what separated Christianity from other world religions, or what truth statements are at the heart of their faith, how would they respond? Not only is this critical for them to know as Christ-followers, being able to rally around a shared set of beliefs is key to building culture. Do you have work you need to do in this area?
THE FIFTH ELEMENT IS COMMITMENT.
You have to be committed as the group leader. You have to be all in. Culture can’t be created in the absence of trust. If you’ve not bought in, your students will sense it, and they will not buy in. But commitment isn’t just about you. Your students need to be committed as well, both to your group and to grow in their faith. That’s the thing that’s unique about building a youth ministry culture. If spiritual growth is absent, no amount of work on your part to create a vibrant youth ministry will be of any use. At the very core of any youth ministry culture has to be the desire to grow closer to Christ. I think the easiest way to talk about this is in terms of spiritual disciplines. As you’re building a culture, are you empowering students to know God more through Bible study and prayer? Are you creating opportunities for service and worship? Every youth ministry has a culture, whether you like it or not. Your goal should be to intentionally craft a culture that is Gospel-centered and God-honoring. Hopefully, these elements will get you thinking in the right direction. ANDY BLANKS is the co-founder and Publisher for YM360 and has been in youth ministry for nearly 20 years. WHY NOT
WHAT “OTHER FOLKS” TO DO
THE
ARE DOING
When building a youth ministry culture, it’s fun to look at what other youth groups are doing. What games are they playing? What are they teaching? I like finding out what their youth space looks like . . . Basement, gym, Sunday school room, dedicated area, or someone’s living room. I also like to see what programs they’re running. It’s fascinating to discover and understand the diversity that makes up the youth ministry world.
youth worker who sees what the “big” church is doing and thinks that that is what youth group should look like. So they copy the methods, materials, and strategies not fully understanding the dynamics, cultures, and personalities that are involved. Just because it worked for them, it doesn’t mean it will work for you.
But we have to be careful not to just follow what the “other guys” are doing. After all, what works for them might not work for you. And even if it does work, you need to ask yourself, “Is the direction they’re taking the direction I want to take?”
So, what attitude should we take regarding how we handle what we see others doing? I think the critical thing to remember is this: If God has called you to minister to students and serve a church family, He has also given you the talents, skills, and passion for serving and ministering to those people. Your job is to seek what God is already doing and join Him there.
I fear the more we look to see what others are doing, the tendency is to look less at what God wants us to do. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the sharing and gleaning of what’s done within our youth ministries. But when we stop pursuing God’s lead and merely copy what we see others doing, we miss out on the great work that God wants to do in and through us.
When you do see something that looks like a great idea, take the time to pray about it. Work through it and try to process the potential impact the idea might have upon your group. There are a ton of ideas that I wish I could do with my students, but because of where we live, and what our culture is like, I can’t. Once you have prayed about the idea, adapt it, so it fits your context.
What’s the harm in continually keeping up with the guys down the street, or the big national guys who share what they are doing? The danger is jealousy. The danger is discontentment. The danger is laziness. The danger is being a copy-cat. The danger is thinking less of who you are. The danger is not trusting God to use you in the ways He wants to use YOU. And I also worry about the new
Most importantly, know your students. Don’t do what the other folks are doing just because they’re doing it. Be a part of what God is doing through you. Jay Higham is the Youth Director at Hickory Church in Western PA.

CHANGING YOUR YOUTH MINISTRY TO ADAPT TO CULTURE
You can’t craft a youth ministry culture without an eye toward culture at large. It’s true. As someone who is a student of culture, it’s fair to say that we find ourselves in a unique cultural place. A place that makes asking and answering questions about the culture of our youth ministries more crucial than ever. Here’s what I mean . . .
MAINSTREAM US CULTURE IS AS UN-RELIGIOUS IT HAS EVER BEEN.
I lead workshops all over the country where we look at how key cultural trends impact discipleship. Study after study after study confirms that US teenagers are coming of age in a culture that is less aligned with what might be considered a “Christian worldview” than in any time in our country’s history. This dramatically affects how teenagers view the institution of Church and faith in general.
THE FRONT DOOR OF THE CHURCH IS NO LONGER THE FRONT DOOR TO FAITH.
I think the boat has sailed on the “seeker” mentality that drove the church growth movement of the 80’s and 90’s. I do not believe there are large numbers of young people who are undecided about the Church. In other words, most people have formed their opinion. And if they aren’t in church, for most, it’s because they’ve consciously said it’s not for them. If we want to draw people into our faith
Does your youth group play games? Do you want to play something a little more fun than PowerPoint trivia games? When it comes to games for churches, you might notice that there are tons to choose from, but the quality is hit or miss. Unfortunately, you’re more likely to have misses than hits. Your youth ministry deserves world-class games that will play week after week!
S E K A M T WHA S E M A G OUR ? T N E R E F DIF
communities, we can’t open the doors, have some pizza, and expect them to flock to us. We have to go to them.
YOUTH GROUP IS SEEN AS JUST ANOTHER EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY, NOT AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE IDENTITY OF A CHRIST-FOLLOWER. For most, youth ministry has become just another elective. More than ever, parents are putting church involvement on the same level as football, AAU basketball, cheer, band, dance, and so on. When students are allowed to choose, guess what loses out? (You don’t have to guess, you’ve seen it in your attendance.) If we are going to shape a youth ministry culture that is vibrant and transformative, we have to ask the tough questions about our ministry philosophy and practices against the backdrop of a radically changed culture.

IS YOUR WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY
JESUS KNEW DISCIPLESHIP WAS COUNTER-CULTURAL.
DO WE? In Matthew chapter 9, Jesus gives two blind men their sight. Which, you know, is pretty amazing. And if Jesus were in the “ministry growth movement,” He would’ve asked these guys if He could get a statement from them to put on His website and the back of His books. But that’s not what Jesus did. In Matthew 9:30, after Jesus healed them, He said this: “See that no one knows about this.” Now, let’s give the nod to good scholarship and acknowledge that the primary reason for this seems to be Jesus’ desire for people not to misinterpret the nature of His identity as Messiah or the nature of His Kingdom rule. Or at least not to do so this early in His ministry. But I wonder if there wasn’t another motivation, one that has application for us as 21st Century culture shapers. You see, I think Jesus understood that the atmosphere of the crowd is counter-intuitive to growing disciples. Jesus was healing people and teaching stuff that blew people away. Can you imagine the sights and sounds, the constant stimulus, the side conversations and arguments that surrounded this movement? It must have been a circus! But here’s Jesus, shaping the lives of 12 men, and a larger group of other disciples, rocking their worlds with a crash-course in REAL religion.
The chaos of the crowd only served as a distraction to the real, slow, concentrated work of spiritual growth. As we seek to craft a culture that moves our students toward a more meaningful life of follower-ship, we HAVE to realize how counter-cultural this pursuit is. Here’s what I mean . . . • Spiritual formation is slow work. Our culture demands results now. • Becoming a real follower is one step forward two steps back kind of stuff. Our culture expects success on success. • Bending our lives toward Christ’s model means denial of self. Our culture says gratify the self at all costs! • The soul work of growing faith IDEALLY happens in silence with nothing competing with the Spirit’s work in us. But culture is multi-task friendly, stimulus-rich, and data intensive. Jesus understood that the process of becoming a follower happened away from the crowds. Do we? THE 7 BEST PRACTICES FOR TEACHING TEENAGERS THE BIBLE
CONSIDER THIS
To say “Youth ministry can be challenging” is an understatement. Few callings have as many variables. Discipling teenagers is a tough calling. But what about the dynamics with the staff and leadership of your church? What about the challenges of engaging with your students’ parents? And let’s not get started on the way that ministry impacts your family. Youth ministry is not for the faint of heart. Especially if you’re just getting started which is why Consider This is such an important book.
We know you desire to lead students closer to God. Many ask, “What’s the most effective way to do this?” We believe it is by teaching students the Word of God. The Bible is God’s main way of making Himself and His ways known, and your students need sound Bible teaching now more than ever. This resource offers you seven ultra-practical and deeply meaningful “practices” you can use to help teach the Bible in a transformative and dynamic way. This is a perfect book to place in the hands of your leaders.

DISCIPLE: THE ORDINARY PERSON’S GUIDE TO DISCIPLING TEENAGERS
This is your youth ministry evangelism and discipleship strategy for a post-Christian culture. If your ministry desires to reach teenagers growing up in the post-Christian culture we find ourselves in, you and your entire team will benefit greatly from this resource. Benjamin Kerns uses a thought-provoking twist on a beloved parable as the framework for a rich examination of the cultural landscape, helping you reach lost students and know how to begin discipling them.
Written by one of the leading voices in youth ministry, Dr. Allen Jackson, Disciple is a practical, down-to-earth guide for leading teenagers to pursue Christ. No matter if you’re a veteran or a newbie, Disciple will help challenge and equip you and your team to get serious about disciple-making.

MEET ANNA ARCHER
When I’m not serving awesome youth workers, I spend my time with my husband, Jared, trying to figure out this whole “parenting” thing with our new daughter, Millie. I’m a lover of literature and weirdly super invested in the Olympics. Go Team USA! We attend church in Birmingham where my husband is the “cool” small group leader and I’m the ever-stressed nursery worker.
One of my favorite YM360 values is: We Crush Hassles. I work with an incredible team, and customer care is something we don’t play around with. Big or small, let us take what’s hassling you and hopefully make life just a little bit easier. Seriously, we’ve been known to literally run down the UPS truck in order to make sure event books arrive on time. We’re in the trenches with you every day. You’re not alone! Reach out. Let us crush your hassles while you prepare yourself to ask your pastor for more budget money so you can buy more pizza: the much more pressing issue on your plate.
