Molding
Moldings • Is a strip of material with various profiles used to cover transitions between surfaces or for decoration. • It is traditionally made from wood or plaster, but may be of plastic (PVC) or fiber glass. • In classical architecture and sculpture, the molding is often carved in marble or other stones.
Moldings • Cornice comes from the Latin word coronics, meaning curved line. The Latin is from the Greek word for a curved object, koronis. • 1. an ornamental moulding round the wall of a room just below the ceiling. • 2. an overhanging mass of hardened snow at the edge of a mountain precipice.
Moldings • Materials: – Wood – Metal – Brick – Concrete – Terra cotta – Modern materials • Fiberglass • Lightweight cements
Why cornices were provided? • Exterior: to ensure that the rainwater would not hit the exterior walls of the building as this over time would create discolouring of the stone buildings. The function of the cornice overhang is to protect the structure's walls. • Interior: to conceal the connection between walls and ceilings and the mechanism for opening and closing drapes.
Patterns
Patterns • Pattern • A repeated decorative design. • Elements of a pattern repeat in a predictable manner. • A geometric pattern is a kind of pattern formed of geometric shapes and typically repeated like a wallpaper design.
Patterns • Abstract patterns in science, mathematics, or language may be observable only by analysis
Patterns • Visual patterns in nature are often chaotic, never exactly repeating, and often involve fractals. • Natural patterns include spirals, meanders, waves, foams, tilings, cracks, and those created by symmetries of rotation and reflection.
Patterns • In art and architecture, decorations or visual motifs may be combined and repeated to form patterns designed to have a chosen effect on the viewer. .
