I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve the community through the YMCA and to lead the thriving YMCA of the East Valley as your new CEO. The warm welcome I have received from our staff, volunteers, donors, and community members has truly made me feel at home, and I cannot thank you all enough.
In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve been profoundly moved by the servant leadership demonstrated by our staff, inspired by the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, and impressed by the philanthropic spirit that defines this remarkable community. I am eager to work together to guide our YMCA into this exciting new chapter and expand our reach through transformative Y programs and services.
The YMCA has been a cornerstone of my own upbringing, and I am a testament to the positive impact of the mentorship and quality programs it provides. Our YMCA touches the lives of thousands each day, and I am thrilled to share just a few highlights from the past year:
• Our 2nd Grade Safety Around Water (SAW) Swim program bussed in every second grader from 28 elementary schools across two school districts.
• Our before-and after-school childcare and preschool programs served families on 53 school campuses, serving 8,200 children each day.
• Our legal aid program assisted over 500 new families, and 300 youth participated in our renowned YMCA circus.
These accomplishments are just a glimpse of the incredible impact our YMCA has made. I truly believe that through the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and donors, we create miracles in the lives of those we serve. I look forward to collaborating with all of you in the coming year to continue making these miracles happen.

FOSTERING PHYSICAL & MENTAL WELL-BEING
The YMCA has proven to be a life-changing organization for Maria’s family, especially her two boys, Alexzander (14) and Isaiah (11), as they have experienced a significant transformation in their lives. Maria speaks fondly of her experiences at the San Bernardino YMCA, praising the supportive staff, welcoming atmosphere, and the sense of community among its members.
Maria emphasizes that the YMCA has been incredibly impactful by providing a positive environment for her boys to stay active and engaged. The boys have particularly enjoyed participating in the Karate/Martial Arts classes, which have not only fostered their love for physical activity but have also contributed to their mental well-being. Maria recounts a time when her son, Alexzander, suffered a knee injury. By utilizing the Y’s exercise equipment and classes, his knee significantly improved, allowing him to fully engage in his beloved Karate class.
The positive effects of the YMCA extend beyond physical health, as Maria observes changes in her sons’ behavior and activity levels. She notes they are more active than ever, demonstrating increased happiness and energy. As a family, both their mental and physical health has improved, leading to an overall sense of wellbeing. Research shows that spending time
getting physical activity can reduce worry and promote a happier mood. In turn, the mental health benefits of exercise can have positive physical outcomes, such as improved sleep and fewer anxiety-related stomachaches or headaches.1
Financial aid from the YMCA has provided crucial support for Maria’s family, especially during a difficult period when her husband was unemployed due to the pandemic. “I didn’t even know the Y had financial aid until someone at the front desk told me to apply for it,” Maria says. This assistance enabled Maria to enroll her children in Karate classes, an opportunity that has not only kept them active and helped them lose weight but has also resulted in their outstanding performance, with both boys achieving the highest rank of green belts in their class. “Now, my kids can be more active and stay away from video games for a little bit,” She adds with a little laugh.
The World Health Organization recommends that children engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. Unfortunately, less than 24% of children 6 to 17 years of age living in Southern California participate in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. 2 That means almost 75% of our
children are missing out on the amazing physical and mental benefits provided by exercise that Maria and her sons Alexzander and Isaiah have discovered.
Moreover, the time spent at the YMCA has strengthened their family bond and facilitated better communication. Maria highlights how the YMCA has become a safe and welcoming space for her boys, allowing them to open up and share their experiences after engaging in physical activities or their Karate classes. “Sometimes the boys seem frustrated after a busy day at school, but after working out or their Karate class you can tell they just feel better… it’s great stressrelief for them.”
The YMCA has had a profound impact on Maria, Alexzander, and Isaiah’s lives, fostering their physical and mental well-being, providing crucial financial support, and nurturing a stronger family bond. Maria expresses her immense gratitude emphasizing the positive and transformative role it has played in their lives. “I’m so thankful for the Y and would definitely recommend it to everyone.”

WELCOMING COMMUNITY
Ashley and her children have experienced immense support and growth through the programs offered by the Highland YMCA. Having been a member for five years, Ashley has witnessed her children flourish and develop through the various youth sports programs provided by the YMCA.
“My son was shy, and we wanted to help him make friends,” Ashley shares. Seeing her son, Jonah, gain confidence, build relationships, and develop new skills while playing basketball fills her with pride and joy. Inspired by this positive change, she also enrolled her daughter, Rory, in the volleyball program.
The impact of youth sports on her children’s lives has been heartwarming. She is delighted to see them playing sports and growing as individuals. When children like Jonah and Rory participate in youth sports, it helps them create stronger peer relationships, and for girls in particular, it promotes a healthier body image.1
Additionally, participation in youth sports has been linked with lower rates of depression and anxiety, along with a reduced risk of suicide and substance abuse in young adults. 2 Youth Sports is just another way the YMCA is helping build a stronger community.
The financial assistance provided by the YMCA has been crucial for Ashley’s family. “It gave us the flexibility to put both our kids into multiple activities at the YMCA,” she says, expressing her deep gratitude for the support and emphasizing how helpful it has been for her family.
The welcoming and family-oriented environment at the YMCA has also made a significant impression on Ashley and her extended family. Many of her nieces and nephews have joined various YMCA programs, benefitting from the affordable and diverse activities offered. Ashley is grateful for the inclusive and accessible nature of these programs, which enable children
to explore and engage in different activities. This sense of community is what makes the YMCA such a special place.
The convenience of having all the programs in one location has been an enormous advantage for Ashley. “I don’t have to go to different places for different sports; they have it all here at the Y,” Ashley says. The variety of sports programs, including basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics, has kept her kids engaged and excited. The YMCA offers a wide range of programs catering to many interests and abilities, which is great for our diverse community. Ashley particularly appreciates that her daughter enjoys Kids’ Club and is thankful for the dedicated employees who make the experience enjoyable for the children. “I really enjoy cycling class, and having the option [of Kids’ Club] really helped me to continue working on my fitness,” she adds.
Studies show that youth sports participation promotes positive changes in children, including improved self-esteem, confidence, and cognitive performance.1 The impact of the YMCA’s programs and financial assistance on Ashley’s family has been immeasurable, providing physical activity, valuable life lessons, and personal growth for her children and herself.

ENRICHING & TRANSFORMATIVE PROGRAMS
The YMCA has had a profound impact on Kimberly’s family, particularly through the circus program and the financial assistance they have received. Kim’s journey with the Y began at the age of fifteen, when she landed her first job as a lifeguard; she later became involved in the Y’s Kids’ Club and Day Camp programs.
The circus program is where Kim’s children, Tinley, age twelve, and Lukas, age ten, have truly found their niche. They developed a deep love for the circus and eagerly participated in multiple acts, eventually expanding their involvement from two to eight classes. Tinley’s favorite class is Risley, while Lukas enjoys perfecting his skills on the teeterboard and unicycle! As a household of entrepreneurs and business owners, the financial strain was significant, especially since Kim had not been working outside the home due to homeschooling their children.
“It wasn’t worth it to say no to my kids because we couldn’t afford it,” Kim shares. However, the Y’s financial assistance programs eased this burden, allowing them to fully embrace the circus program and all the joy it brought into their lives.
The Y became their second home, and the support they received from the YMCA was instrumental in making this possible. The transformative impact of the circus program inspired Kim to become a head trainer and assistant trainer, further solidifying her commitment to the Y Circus. The sense of community and belonging they found within the circus program was invaluable. “The Y has helped our family out so tremendously that when approached about the community campaign to raise money for the program, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. I am my own walking testimonial, and it was clear that people would put their money where they know it will be put to good use,” Kim shares.
The YMCA holds a special place in her heart, and she takes pride in advocating for the diverse range of programs that cater to all walks of life. The circus, water aerobics, and nature walks are just a few examples of the inclusive activities offered by the Y. “The YMCA has been a part of my life for a very long time, and I’m proud
when I tell people about it. There’s literally something for everyone,” she adds. Looking to the future, she is excited to see her children continue to thrive in the circus program and embrace the enriching experiences it offers.
The Y has welcomed Kim and her kids into the circus community, providing them with a newfound sense of belonging and friendship. Both Tinley and Lukas have fully immersed themselves in the experience and are eagerly preparing for next year’s acts. The Y is now a central part of their lives, including her stepdaughter, Heily, who has found her passion in group exercise classes like Body Pump and Pound and also contributes as an usher during circus season.
Thanks to the support from our donors, families like Kimberly’s have the opportunity to participate in programs like circus, which have changed their lives in ways they could have never imagined. The financial assistance they have received has allowed their family to create lifelong memories and foster a sense of community that has become an integral part of their lives. They are immensely grateful for the YMCA’s unwavering support and look forward to creating many more unforgettable moments within its welcoming community.

VICTORIA
SWIM LESSONS AT SAN BERNARDINO Y
Maria was looking for swim lessons for her seven year old daughter, Victoria. After learning from her cousin about the Y, she enrolled Victoria in beginner swim lessons. Though Maria has never learned how to swim, she felt it was essential for Victoria, who is autistic and nonverbal, to have that skill. While Victoria was curious about the water initially, she was scared of being in a new environment as she began her swim lessons. For months, Victoria’s swim instructor focused on helping her learn how to trust and be comfortable in the water. “I am very proud of my daughter. After just two months of lessons, she can float, immerse herself in water, and
do some swimming. Every lesson she takes helps her improve her skills, and she loves the water,” shares Maria.
In addition to swim lessons, Victoria loves the Drum Corps program at the San Bernardino YMCA. The 45-minute class allows Victoria to release her anxiety on the drums and practice sitting while learning a skill. While it can be difficult for Victoria to form friendships, having other kids in Drum Corps helps her be in a social setting. Thanks to the Y’s financial assistance program, Victoria is able to have the opportunity to learn life-saving swimming skills while being part of a community.

Y MEMBER
Since joining the Silver Sneakers® class, Fred has seen incredible improvements in his balance and mobility. “The instructors are awesome, and the exercises we do are really helping me physically and mentally,” he says. With his strength returning, he now walks with confidence, free from the fear of falling. Thanks to the support and resources at the San Bernardino YMCA, Fred has regained his independence, improved his quality of life, and no longer feels confined to a wheelchair.
MELISSA
AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
“My daughter Melissa has thrived in the YMCA Afterschool Program,” Lisa says with a smile. “It has not only been a source of educational enrichment for her but has also proven to be a pillar of support for our family unit. Their nurturing environment and dedicated staff have created a safe space for her to learn, play, and build meaningful connections with her peers.” Without the invaluable childcare services the YMCA provides, Lisa would be trying to balance work commitments and giving Melissa the attention she deserves.
BRAYDEN
REDLANDS DAY CAMP
“Brayden has absolutely loved his experience at the Redlands YMCA Day Camp,” says his mom, Jennifer. “He has made many new friends and enjoys the field trips and playing basketball during the week. It has been a huge help for our family when Brayden is off from school, allowing us to go to work without worrying.” She emphasizes how much the financial assistance for Brayden’s Day Camp means to her family during tough times. “The support we receive is tremendous,” she adds, knowing her son is in good care at Day Camp.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY
The YMCA of the East Valley experienced considerable growth in 2023-24. Revenues increased by 20.1% to $24.18 million, while expenses increased by 16.4% to $23.36 million.
Government contract revenue increased by $2.7 million, primarily due to an increase in Before and After School Care. Membership, Program, Child Care, and Special Event revenue increased as well in 2023-24. Investment income was $817K compared to $557K in the prior period.
Payroll related expenses totaled $18.7 million or 80% of total expenses, primarily due to the staffing requirement for Child Care programs. The Change in Net Assets was $825K compared to $61K in 2022-23.
The Association has available cash reserves and no long term debt and remains in a strong financial position.
